His family supported him, but neighbours didn’t want him to come to any gathering or festivals. Thankfully, our partners Nepal Leprosy Fellowship* found him. They recommended him for surgery. Nine months before I caught up with him, he had joined a Self-Help Group.

Thanks to the support of people like you, Ashilal received a small business start-up loan through the group. He now makes bamboo chairs. This has allowed him to also start to save money. He plans to branch out into making candles too as he has also received candle-making training! Thanks to the generosity of people like you!

When I met Ashilal and his wife, before COVID, he was 51 years old. Diagnosed with leprosy at 26, he was fired from his job because of his deformed foot. He suffered many ulcers. Dev Kumari’s parents married her off at aged 10, due to their poverty. But after a year, her husband sent her back home again. She’d contracted leprosy. He’d told her he would come back for her after few months… but he never did.

Now retired, Dev Kumari is grateful to the staff of New SADLE for their continued hospitality. She is so thankful to you for your kindness. Thank you for not giving up on those in great need. Your generous heart is giving Dev Kumari and others like her the practical, lifesaving help they need. You’re giving them hope for the future. Thank you and God bless you!

When Dev Kumari was 14, her father died. She was already in bad physical condition due to her untreated leprosy. But it became her responsibility to take care of the cattle, her younger siblings, and her mother. She looked after them for years until her mother then also died.

We all can’t stand to see anyone suffering, but sadly, during all of those years, Dev Kumari never managed to reach a hospital. She only made it as far as the local government health post. Leprosy drove Lami’s husband away and took her leg. But now she is smiling again. Lami, 65, first became aware that she was unwell and was suffering nerve pain in both feet and repeated ulcers. While she was looking for treatment, her husband left her and their 4 children. At first, Lami had sought help from a traditional herbalist. She eventually made it to a Leprosy Mission Orthopaedic Workshop in Nigeria. But it was too late to save her left leg from amputation. Lami completed leprosy treatment at the workshop and is completely cured. She now also has a prosthetic limb. Thanks to the generosity and support of people like you who can’t bear to see anyone suffering! Lami met her second husband at The Leprosy Mission Workshop. It was surprising to her that before she contracted the disease, she didn’t know anyone with leprosy. She had believed it was a curse from God. But her own experience changed her perspective. Unfortunately, this husband died. She misses him every day. Today, Lami continues to navigate the challenges of being a single amputee. She also struggles with arthritis and high blood pressure. The support of her Leprosy Mission Self-Help Group and the community at the

workshop help her get by.
