Suman, 23, holds her precious baby girl in her arms. She is so grateful to compassionate people like you who support Leprosy Mission hospitals and self-help groups in India. She has found a new life. She shares her story to show you what can be made possible through your kindness.
At 15, Suman was given away in marriage to an older man. She suffered physical and mental abuse for 8 years from both her husband, and mother-in-law, due to ongoing disagreements in the dowry amount for him to take care of her. COVID lockdowns made things worse, forcing the whole family to stay home together. When Suman discovered that her husband had been living a ‘double-life’ with another woman, he brutally beat Suman and threw her into the street.
Your love and compassion bring JOY and HEALING to women like Suman and her daughter, when you Shop to Stop Leprosy this Easter
Leprosy Mission hospital. Soon she will be fully cured and will most probably not suffer any lasting physical effects.
After undergoing treatment, Suman was moved to adopt a baby girl that had been abandoned at the hospital. Girls are often seen as a financial burden and left in the woods after birth or taken to a hospital during the night. This baby girl also has deformed hands and no-one else had shown any interest in adopting her. After completing the legal formalities, Suman took her home.
Suman is now a “champion” helping others in her community and plans to undertake vocational training as a seamstress.

Sir David Attenborough is a broadcaster and naturalist whose television career is now in its seventh decade. Since the launch of his famous Zoo Quest series in 1954 he has surveyed almost every aspect of life on earth and brought it to the viewing public. This is the story of those voyages. Staying with local tribes while trekking in search of giant anteaters in Guyana, Komodo dragons in Indonesia and armadillos in Paraguay, he and the rest of the team battled with cannibal fish, aggressive tree porcupines and escapeartist wild pigs, as well as treacherous terrain and unpredictable weather, to record the incredible beauty and biodiversity of these regions. Ranjana is most proud of a pair of black pants she designed and made herself!
From leprosy patches to sewing swatches. This versatile seamstress is transforming her life. Thanks to people like you.
Ranjana was only 15 when she noticed some strange patches on her skin four years ago. Initially she did not know what the skin patches were. So, she went to a local private clinic. They gave her medication and cream. But this did not help.
Eventually a female community health volunteer referred her to the health post where she was diagnosed with leprosy. Since Ranjana’s diagnosis, four other members of her family have also been found to have leprosy.
While Ranjana has been finishing her high school education and completing her exams recently, she has been dreaming of becoming a tailor. However, she could not afford the training on her own.
Thankfully, through the IMPACT project you support through this catalogue, she has been able to attend a 6-month tailoring course. During the course she has learned how to sew a vast array of material items. From various types of clothes, like dresses and shirts

Physiotherapy
12647
Help someone affected by leprosy recover the use of their fingers, feet or limbs. Your gift will help teach patients the right muscle exercises or how to manage aids or prosthetics.
Nigerian bicycle mechanic, Rabiu, was experiencing a strange ‘pricking sensation’ and pain around his body. He had no idea what was wrong, so he visited several herbal and traditional healers, but nothing helped. The pain continued to be excruciating. It became so difficult he could no longer continue with his business or even participate in family life with his wife and four children. He began to depend on the goodwill of his friends for daily survival. It wasn’t until one day while listening to the radio, that a jingle aired by The Leprosy Mission caught Rabiu’s attention. It inspired him to listen further to a health talk on causes, signs, symptoms, prevention, treatment and management of leprosy and other diseases. (Radio promotion is part of our Australian Aid funded project in Nigeria). The information he heard convinced Rabiu to visit his local health centre. It was there that Rabiu was diagnosed with leprosy. The health worker immediately registered his case and provided him with Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT – the cure for leprosy) and anti-reaction medication.
completed his treatment and feels much better.
"The MDTdrugs worked well and I have completely recovered. I am slowly retuning back to my work, and happy to provide for my family. Sometimes I feel sad when I remember how I had wasted time and money visiting the wrong places for treatment that never worked, and how I lost my livelihood and ability to fend for my family. I am grateful to TLM for saving my life.” - Rabiu
Rabiu has also joined a Leprosy Mission Self-Help Group. He is actively involved in raising awareness about leprosy. He teaches people affected by leprosy, especially those who have ulcers, on effective self-care to avoid injuries and disabilities.
You can cure one person affected by leprosy like Rabiu TODAY by adding a Gift of Love Cure Package to your Easter catalogue order. Thank you and God bless you!
