YOUR KINDNESS THROUGH THE LEPROSY MISSION SHOP WILL: Help cure, care for and restore people affected by leprosy and disability Help to provide people affected by leprosy and disability with a dignified income Help provide livelihoods for artisans living in poverty Make a positive impact on the environment buying sustainable products Support local Aussie creators which helps local businesses thrive
Your love brings restoration Easter to lives touched by leprosy this Anju and Rina love to run round with their friends and play cooking games. In Bangladesh, young girls enjoy copying their mothers in their play. Some mothers in their community work casually at a tea plantation, but the rest of their time is spent at home caring for their families. Both Rina and Anju were diagnosed with leprosy at a local ‘Skin Camp’. Their mothers were very worried. Particularly that leprosy would ruin their children’s dreams for their future. Rina wants to be a teacher and Anju wants to become a doctor. They want to help others. Fortunately, they were diagnosed early. Rina
had discoloured skin patches but no muscle weakness. With a full course of Multi-Drug Therapy, the girls will be cured and are not likely to develop any permanent disability. When you shop with The Leprosy Mission Australia, you are helping families like Anju’s and Rina’s to recover from the devastating effects of leprosy by bringing healing and hope for a better economic future. Each handcrafted item you buy made by artisans in Bangladesh and beyond, supports dignified incomes in some of the world’s poorest communities. Thank you for choosing to Shop to Stop Leprosy. God bless you. Images of Anju and Rina by Ruth Towell.
Why the armadillo?
2
This gorgeous and intriguing creature plays an important role in leprosy research. The nine-banded armadillo is pretty much the only animal that not only gets leprosy, but can pass it on to humans. Don’t worry; you would have to eat a lot of them to get it. Or keep them as pets. Which is illegal in Australia. Plus, you’d have to rob a zoo.
Actively support Fair Trade and Anti-Slavery initiatives standing by people in need
Change lives through your shopping by purchasing handmade, Fair Trade and The Leprosy Mission’s own brand of products.
Your Guide to the Symbols: Handmade artisanal products Handmade at a Rehabilitation Centre by leprosy-affected, disabled or disadvantaged people. To continue supporting these people, buy products that have a green handprint. Fair Trade We also source fair trade products from other organisations with similar values to offer you a wide variety of products. Australian made products Exclusive to The Leprosy Mission A Gift of Love is a tax-deductible donation to an actual Leprosy Mission project. If the area of need for your Gift of Love becomes funded, your gift will go where it’s needed the most.
The armadillo is used to further our research into treatments for this 4000 year-old disease. Thanks to its help, we are getting closer and closer to eliminating leprosy in our lifetime. We’re grateful for its contribution, and in the 150th year of Leprosy Mission around the world, we are honoured to have the armadillo as our emblem of progress.
GoodWeave means no child, forced or bonded labor was used in the making of a certified product. Your purchase supports programs that educate children and ensure decent work for adults.

Your generous heart helps to change lives and cure more people
Your love is transforming dreams into reality for artisans like Radhika Radhika Basnet lives in Chabahil, an ancient neighbourhood in north-east Kathmandu, Nepal.
The love you share is a practical way to help them fulfil their dreams for themselves.
Radhika grew up in a family of seven, with two brothers and two sisters. She now manages her household alone, with her son and daughter. Her husband is away a lot of the time with the Royal Guards. That’s left Radhika to support the family through her income.
Radhika’s son is now completing the 12th grade, and her daughter Sandipa studies in a local high school. Her son wants to keep studying and get a degree in computer science. Though her daughter is young, Radhika would like to keep supporting her too so she can reach all her goals.
Radhika is an artisan in the batik section of our Shop partner of New SADLE. (Batik is a method of dyeing textiles using wax). New SADLE is a not-forprofit organisation that helps rehabilitate people affected by leprosy. It provides training and employment in the arts and crafts industry.
This is what you do when you shop to stop leprosy.
And when you shop to stop leprosy, that’s where you step in. You support artisans like Radhika. Radhika’s dream is to create a life where she can support her family, and her children’s desires for a better life. And thanks to the love and kindness you share when you shop, you help women like Radhika make that dream a reality.
It has now been 27 years since she joined New SADLE, and her hard work has also won her recognition. She was one of five selected to join the Board of Directors of ARNS. It’s a new organisation set up to support artisans like her. For Radhika this was a moment of great joy! I can only imagine how that makes her feel. God bless you this Easter, and every day, and enjoy shopping with a purpose. Thank you.

Your love is transforming life for women like Bishna in Nepal Bishna contracted leprosy when she was only eight years old. A friendly and talkative child, she became close friends with the doctors. The doctors empathised with her fear of the stigma she’d face back home, and let her stay on as long as she liked. They even began to teach her arithmetic and the Nepali language to help educate her. Bishna loved the doctors and her life at the hospital - she never wanted to leave! Her father experienced stigma and difficulties because of his leprosy. And she was afraid she’d suffer too. Being among the doctors helped her feel loved and cared for, and she began to grow in confidence. But as she grew older, it was obvious that she would have to leave the hospital, and start life on her own. Bishna couldn’t even begin to imagine what her future could look like. She was then moved to a leprosy hospital with other leprosy patients to receive care. also It was there she learned incomegenerating life skills. Skills like sewing, and getting a basic education. This was a big turning point for Bishna, as she began to learn life skills that would help her grow as a young adult! After a few months, Bishna moved to our shop partner — New SADLE. And that’s where you step in and help women like her. New SADLE provides disadvantaged artisans like Bishna training and employment. At the age of 22, Bishna began to learn backstrap weaving. An ancient form of weaving still used in parts of Nepal and India. She used her skills of sewing to stitch a brand-new life together for herself!
18
She got married, and has a son and daughter. And even though her husband left her, the future remained secure. Her new skills gave her the confidence to provide an income to support herself and her children. This is what you do when you shop to stop leprosy. It’s your shopping that supports artisans like Bishna. The love you share is a practical way to help women like her gain confidence. It’s your shopping that helps give them independence. It’s you that supports them so that they overcome rejection. It’s you that helps give them freedom. When you buy their products, you help provide them with a means to support their families. Thank you for not giving up on women like Bishna.

Every 2 minutes a new case of Leprosy is diagnosed. You can cure one today!
A life you transform For the last 17 years, I’ve had the privilege to live and work among communities of people affected by leprosy in Nigeria. This has given me the opportunity to get to personally know and share the pain they suffer, and also witness the transformation that can happen with the power of your love in their life through The Leprosy Mission. Let me introduce you to Jane.
I kept in contact with the family, but was heartbroken a few months later when Jane phoned, and told me her dad was very ill with a leprosy ulcer that had become cancerous.
As I speak with you today, Jane is married, and blessed with three lovely children. Not only did Jane get her first degree, she also has a Master’s Degree in Public Health.
What made it worse was that Jane’s extended family showed up, with a plan to marry Jane off, and to force her two young brothers to become farm labourers. That was the only future they thought them worthy of!
Her two brothers are currently in the university. One is studying electrical engineering, and the other is studying computer science.
When Jane reached out to me, crying at the other end of the phone, she was asking for help.
We are simply walking in the footsteps of Jesus, extending the healing hand he extended to people hurt by leprosy.
BEFORE YOUR KINDNESS Jane’s dad and mum were both affected by leprosy. They had complications which caused physical deformities, and left them so disfigured that their own families rejected and isolated them. This meant, as a young child, Jane grew up in a leprosy community, constantly being told that nothing good could come out of her family. Sadly, too often people with leprosy are rejected and made to feel ashamed and worthless. The impact of the disease hurt the whole family. The first time I met Jane was when her father came to one of The Leprosy Mission hospitals, where we have our orthopaedic workshop to make and fit prosthetic limbs. Jane’s dad received a prosthetic leg, and was able to walk again.
All of us on The Leprosy Mission team knew we couldn’t abandon Jane and her brothers to that community. Jane’s mother gave us her full support to protect her children, and agreed we should move the family away, to the welcoming community where I live. Basically, I became Jane’s adoptive father, and began to care for her and her brothers, supported by people like you through The Leprosy Mission. AFTER YOUR CARE When we rescued Jane, all she had was a few school qualifications. Jane and her two young brothers went back to school. We found a place for them to live. That was 11 years ago.
This is why The Leprosy Mission exists. This is the reason why we do the things we do.
Jane’s story is the perfect testimony of how the love that The Leprosy Mission conveys across the world can transform life for people like Jane, whose lives are affected by leprosy in their family. Our privilege – mine, and yours - is to bring change and transformation and restoration. Together, we make a life-changing difference for those we are called to serve. Pius Ogbu is Head of Programme & Operations at The Leprosy Mission Nigeria.
This Easter you can use a 5:1 Grant from the Australian Government to transform life for someone hurt by leprosy in one of the world’s poorest countries - Nigeria! Your 5:1 Donation will provide healing to someone else affected leprosy like Jane in Nigeria.
