“I would never wish leprosy on anybody, but especially as a girl.  It impacts your marriage prospects and how people look at you. When I first found out I had leprosy, I was scared. I knew about the stigma. When I first told my friends, they made fun of me and teased me.

After treatment through The Leprosy Mission, my friends saw me recover and were happy for me.

I am part of the sewing technology traineeship at The Leprosy Mission Vocational Training Centre (VTC). I am interested in

Facts about Leprosy

Leprosy is found all over the world –sometimes even in Australia. It is most common in places of poverty.

Leprosy can attack and destroy the nerves in the body, especially in the hands, feet and face resulting in loss of feeling and/or function.

Stigma and discrimination exist in many countries. Fear of rejection by family and friends prevents people seeking diagnosis and treatment early on. This puts them at higher risk of nerve damage and irreversible disability.

The leprosy bacteria can attack the eyes and the eyelids causing paralysis. If patients cannot close their eyes, debris and insects can easily enter and cause damage, eventually leading to permanent blindness.

Your care helps people like Amar care for themselves!

When Amar’s wife died after falling off a roof, Amar lost everything. Amar, from Nepal, had two young children, but he had no way to earn a living. Too poor and too impaired by leprosy – a disease he didn’t know he had, he made the heartbreaking choice to give them a chance at a better future in an orphanage. Amar has not seen his children in 11 years. The leprosy took an enormous toll on his body. He lost feeling in his hand due to nerve damage, and he burnt it while cooking. He bandaged it, but it didn’t heal; in addition, his hand began to claw. His feet became ulcerated, he lost some of his toes, and suffered a left drop foot. The leprosy ulcers started to smell — badly — and the brother whom Amar was living with said that he had to leave.

When his symptoms first started, Amar had gone to the health centre. At first, he was diagnosed with cancer and referred for specialist care. However, he could not afford to go and since he didn’t have money he decided not to return to the health centre. It was not until a few years later that he came

across a community health worker who gave him advice to get tested for leprosy. When he did so, it was positive and he was put on multidrug therapy (MDT). He was given further advice to go to Anandaban hospital to care for his ulcers. There, his wounds were treated properly. He was given the knowledge and resources to properly care for his hands and feet. His body began to heal.

The caring hearts of people like you provided Amar with everything he needed to care for himself. Your Gift of Love Cure Package transforms the life for a person affected by leprosy, like Amar. Your Gift of Love of a Self Care Pack gives somebody just like him the necessities for caring for their injuries. Daily self care is a must for people managing the effects of leprosy. Amar has now had reconstructive surgery on his foot, and no longer struggles to walk. He will soon be able to have surgery on his hands as well.

Now he is hopeful for the future — and it shows in his eyes when he talks about seeing his children again. When he is recovered, Amar wants to start a chicken farm, so he can take care of them as a family once again.

A daily self-care routine is a must for people managing the effects of leprosy. You can provide a pack of necessities to cleanse and protect them each and every day.

kindness gives hope, healing and dignity to someone with leprosy!
Your
You might ask, what use is $5 for a child like Shanti, threatened by leprosy?

The answer is: life-changing! Especially when your $5 gift is multiplied by a new 5:1 Government Grant!

When I was in Nepal a few weeks ago I saw the value of $5. That’s all it costs in Jhapa, Nepal to screen a child for leprosy – so the disease can then be cured early with MultiDrug Therapy (MDT), and lifelong disability prevented.

Buying gifts from The Leprosy Mission shop, shows you have a true heart for helping people with practical care.

With your support now, The Leprosy Mission aims to run a School Screening Blitz! in one of the poorest parts of Nepal for 50,718 and 1,391 teachers in 107 schools!

Those are big scary numbers. Until you see it costs just $5 to screen each child AND a new 5:1 Australian Government Grant increases your impact 5 TIMES!

Join the School Screening BLITZ now! Simply mail add a $5 Gift of Love for Contact Tracing onto your order. Or a $200 Gift of Love for School Screening.

School Screening

For just $5 per child, you go into a school and run what we call a ‘Skin Test Screening’. This name is used because in some communities, just the word ‘leprosy’ can subject children to teasing and rejection.

When I was in Nepal, I heard many heartbreaking stories, just like Shanti’s. She is in Year 7 now, but recalls with great pain what she suffered at school:

“When blisters started to develop on my face and body, I began feeling anxious around my friends. I no longer wanted to leave my house and I no longer saw my neighbours and classmates.”

You can imagine how much that must have hurt. Not just the fear of disease, but the rejection by friends.

That’s why your Gift of Love to be multiplied 5 TIMES by the 5:1 Government Grant, is vital.

After you have run the ‘Skin Test Screening’, any child with signs of leprosy can be referred privately to a Doctor – and kick-started on a 12-month course of MDT to completely cure the leprosy, before it can cause needless lifelong disability.

Educating school communities on leprosy helps find and treat cases early. Your gift is delivered through an awareness program to staff, parents and students. The whole community will learn about leprosy and the importance of treating children quickly to end transmission and before permanent disability can result. Your $200 5:1 Gift of Love now has a value of $1,200 meaning your healing help can reach further.

| CODE: 13883 | $200

Your kindness doesn’t run out after the $5 ‘blitz’ to check for skin disease and leprosy. You’ll see that when Shanti tells you what happens next, after she was prescribed the MDT that people like you distribute through The Leprosy Mission:

“Since taking medications, my blisters have reduced, and I’m no longer scared to see my friends. I attend school every day and I want to graduate.

The Leprosy Focal Person taught us how to care for our wounds and ulcers, and made sure we took our medications.

They told my sister and I that if we take a full 12-month course of MDT that we can be cured of leprosy.”

All this starts with love and kindness from you, and a gift of just $5 per child in our School Screening Blitz!

Your Gifts of Love are critical now to make full use of the 5:1 Australian Government Grant to reach the children and teachers still waiting.

Rhitik is now leprosy free!

Rhitik is on the road to recovery

Do you remember Rhitik? We shared his story with you a little while ago. Around 4 years ago, Rhitik found an ulcer on his right big toe. It caused him a lot of pain and stopped him from doing a lot of things. His friends would ask why he couldn’t play with them, and he had to tell them he was injured. It’s been years now since he was able to join in with them, and it makes Rhitik upset that he is unable to play.

Leprosy had infected the bone in his foot. Rhitik travelled to The Leprosy Mission Anandaban Hospital where the doctors were able to confirm he had leprosy and advise on the infection in his foot. He had surgery to remove the infected bone, and given the crucial Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) to cure the leprosy.

We’re excited to be able to share a new update with you. Rhitik has finished his MDT and is now leprosy free!

Early in the year, he faced some setbacks in his recovery, with the treatment not progressing as hoped. In March, he came back

to Anandaban for a follow-up surgery. Now he is healing well, and doesn’t need to be on any medication.

With contact tracing and early detection of leprosy, children like Rhitik can avoid irreversible disabilities. Your Gift of Love helps diagnose leprosy early and support their journey to becoming leprosy-free.

The next step for Rhitik is self-care. He has been taught to take care of his surgical sites while they recover. These necessary supplies to carry it out are provided thanks to people like you. Now he knows how to keep them clean and safe.

Rhitik is recovering safely and quickly. He had to miss a lot of school while in hospital but is now back at school playing soccer with friends. He will be able to finish Grade 5 in just a few months!

He is so excited to be back to school and play with his friends again!

Soap

Providing soap is essential for the skin care and prevention of infection for people affected by leprosy. Soap improves hygiene and helps reduce the incidence of preventable diseases in poor communities.
