With the cost of Christmas fare rising, it may feel like you almost need to ‘take out a loan’ to feed the family this year. But for Laxmi and Jagat in Nepal, that’s exactly what they did! They bought ‘the pork’ AND the whole farm!

Thanks to people like you and The Australian Government, a grant through their Leprosy Mission supported co-operative has enabled them to build a pig farm with 10 pigsties. One sow is suckling piglets. Another is pregnant.

Laxmi and Jagat are primary carers to their granddaughter who has a disability and requires full assistance with her everyday needs. They are relieved that if their business is successful, she will have money to survive in the future.

They have already sold one 80kg pig through a broker. It fetched a good sum – but if they can learn to sell direct to market, they can “cut out the middle-man”. They think that selling piglets may be easier than raising a pig to be sold for meat, so they are experimenting doing both. They are well on their way to paying off the loan.
