Your Gifts of Love make good things happen to people like Bharthi and her family! (See Bharthi’s Story on Pg 2)

leprosymission.org.au

Finding Care and Compassion Bharthi, a young widow of 28, lives in Nepal with her two small children. She is suffering severe pain due to leprosy complications. Barthi was diagnosed with leprosy and given Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) to cure her of the disease. But by that time she had already experienced the symptoms of leprosy for two years or more. She was losing feeling in her hands and her feet. Disfiguring skin nodules had developed on her face and body, and ulcers on her feet. If only she had been diagnosed earlier! The leprosy bacteria would not have been able to cause so much damage. To make matters worse, Barthi is suffering severe pain and fever from Type 2 Leprosy Reaction. Sadly, this is a common complication of leprosy which has gone untreated for too long. MDT is very effective at destroying the leprosy bacteria in the body. But the build-up of dead leprosy cells can cause inflammation, pain and fever. Bharthi’s children and her in-laws have been very supportive. But she still feels the stigma of leprosy and does not like to go out. This young widow has seen others affected by leprosy badly treated in her home community. And she is afraid people will also reject and mistreat her because of the visible marks on her face. Bharthi took her MDT tablets for one year. But due to Leprosy Reaction, she needs further treatment at The Leprosy Mission’s Anandaban Hospital in Kathmandu. She is likely to be an inpatient, which sadly means being separated from her family for a time. You can help someone like Bharthi by purchasing a Gift of Love. A Gift of Leprosy Reaction Treatment will help restore a life affected by leprosy and its distressing complications. And the Gift of Contact Tracing can help provide early diagnosis within a patient’s immediate family or community. To help prevent others from having a similar experience to Bharthi, please join us in ending the transmission of leprosy – forever!

Your Gifts of Love can be life changing for someone like Bharthi! Thank you! 2

Every 2 minutes... one person is diagnosed

Facts about Leprosy Leprosy is found all over the world – sometimes even in Australia. It is most common in places of poverty. Leprosy can attack and destroy the nerves in the body, especially in the hands, feet and face resulting in loss of feeling and/or function. Stigma and discrimination exist in many countries. Fear of rejection by family and friends prevents people seeking diagnosis and treatment early on. That puts them at higher risk of nerve damage and irreversible disability. The leprosy bacteria can attack the eyes and the eyelids causing paralysis. If patients cannot close their eyes, debris and insects can easily enter and cause damage, eventually leading to permanent blindness.

What is Leprosy Reaction? Acute episodes of inflammation called ‘reactions’ happen in up to half the people diagnosed with leprosy, sometime during or after MDT antibiotic treatment. Reactions cause swelling and pain in skin, nerves and eyes, and patients may need to be hospitalised for months. Type 1 Leprosy Reaction is a milder form and can develop if there are not many leprosy bacteria present in the body. Type 2 Leprosy Reaction or ENL can develop when high levels of leprosy bacteria are present. When ENL develops, patients experience severe pain, fever and very inflamed skin lesions.

Two Brothers in PNG say Thank You! When Phisto was 14 years old, he discovered some strange discoloured patches on his skin. To make matters worse, his hands felt numb and clumsy and his eyes started to become red and sore.

Phisto [pictured left] and Lawrence [pictured right] live in Papua New Guinea.

Phisto and his family live in a low-income area in PNG. Many families like theirs live in makeshift shelters and cramped living quarters. Living conditions where unfortunately a disease like leprosy can thrive. After two years, Phisto visited a health clinic because of a persistent headache. There he was diagnosed with leprosy. And sadly, at the same time, his little brother Lawrence who was only 8 years old, was also diagnosed with leprosy. Both Phisto and Lawrence were prescribed a full course of Multi-Drug Treatment (MDT). Not only to cure their leprosy but also to halt any deformity developing. Lawrence took the full course of Multi-Drug Treatment (MDT) and was completely cured.

Villages and health clinics are often remote and difficult to access. Leprosy patients can struggle to access a constant supply of the cure. Your gift enables delivery of a supply of Multi-Drug Therapy to a clinic so patients can successfully complete treatment without interruption.

4

But Phisto struggled. After completing only 5 months of the daily medication, his life seemed to unravel. Things were difficult at home and one day his father left. Phisto found himself the male head of the family, being the eldest of six siblings. He was battling emotions. He started drinking and smoking with friends to escape what was happening at home. And no longer took his medication regularly.

his health a priority. Later Phisto shared: “My family and The Leprosy Mission have been supportive and have encouraged me to take treatment regularly again…” Phisto feels that at last things have changed for the better. Since taking treatment his hands have improved. They have much more mobility. He knows that without completing a full course, his symptoms can return. Phisto is thankful he does not have deformity. He has seen others with disability, due to the consequences of leprosy. He feels compassion for those who do and wants to do more to help them.

“I want to gather people in my settlement together who have been affected by leprosy and other diseases so we can support one another more through self-care, especially those with disability”. Your support gives hope to many people affected by leprosy in PNG, like Phisto and Lawrence! You can help us provide the cure and restore people to health and well-being. God bless you!

But then The Leprosy Mission staff in PNG stepped in. They encouraged Phisto to make

Her self-esteem crumbled. The nerve-damage caused by leprosy was also numbing her hands. She couldn’t feel things like she used to. Feeling very insecure, Shabnam stopped attending school. Hussaini’s hands are now helping others, thanks to people like you!

30

$

Self Care Package

Hussaini (68 years old), has been fighting leprosy all his life and he is winning! Thank you for your support. When he was just one year old, his parents noticed the first sign of leprosy. On his tiny little body, they found a pale area of skin. His parents took him to a traditional herbal healer who advised them that Hussaini should not eat goat, eggs, or fish. Unfortunately, this was not helpful, and Hussaini’s leprosy continued to grow worse. When he was 7 years old, his parents decided to take him to a clinic for treatment. Unfortunately, this was before an effective cure for leprosy was developed and the prescribed drugs didn’t help him. So sadly, Hussaini continued to suffer from swelling, ulcers on his left foot, painful nerve damage in both arms and clawed hands. But thanks to people like you, finally Hussaini was able to get the medical care he needed. When he was in his 30s, he was prescribed the newly developed MultiDrug Therapy (MDT). Hussaini took MDT

8

for the next two years and his leprosy was completely cured. Hussaini is very happy now and lives in a leprosy settlement. Although his hands are still clawed from the effects of leprosy, he chooses to help others in his community recover from the disease.

12623 A daily self-care routine is a must for people managing the effects of leprosy. You can provide a pack of necessities to cleanse and protect them each and every day.

Trained by The Leprosy Mission Nigeria Staff, Hussaini now works in a clinic three days a week helping treat patient’s ulcers. The Leprosy Mission Nigeria provides the clinic with free supplies including bandages. Thanks to the support of people like you. Now, in a senior position in his community, Hussaini has found both dignity and respect.

Thank you for your compassionate heart. You are helping people like Hussaini heal and recover from leprosy! Your continued support not only empowers them, it restores their lives. You are inspiring them to care and enabling them to help others too!
