1.1 Historical Background
Jeddah remained until the year (1940 AD) within its walls surrounded the four destinations, The wall embraces the live and work at the same time, the work was limited to working in trade or work in the sea .
In (1948 AD) removed the walls for two reasons first one, the discovery of the oil and another reason the planned districts outside the walls, after the removal of the walls they set up a ring road .
In (1884 AD) after the collapse of the wall moved most of the region's families to live in new neighborhoods and their businesses remained on the sides of the commercial hubs within the historic area .
At the beginning of (1960 AD) Jeddah municipality has decided to open a new double street for vehicls in the historic area, from south to north , so this action require demolition number of historical houses and markets .
In (2012 AD), the municipality decided to close the New Street (Al-Dahab Street) and re-designed to be one-way from north to south, and create parking placed parallel to the street to serve the commercial area.
The current situation in (2016 AD) east of Al-Dahab Street preserved as historic area and the west side is a huge commercial area and the movement around the historic area is more efficient than the movement within it .
Schematic for Jeddah in 1884 AD
The following figures show articulated stages in the history of Jeddah from several aspects: the walls and the dynamic of social life inside and working and the state of the urban fabric and its changes all after removed walls until reaching the current situation. اﻻﺷﻜﺎل اﻟﺘﺎﻟﻴﺔ ﺗﻮﺿﺢ ﻣﺮاﺣﻞ ﻣﻔﺼﻠﻴﺔ ﻓﻲ ﺗﺎرﻳﺦ ﺟﺪة :ﻣﻦ ﻋﺪة ﺟﻮاﻧﺐ اﻟﺴﻮر وﻃﺒﻴﻌﺔ اﻟﺤﻴﺎة اﻻﺟﺘﻤﺎﻋﻴﺔ ﻓﻲ داﺧﻠﻪ واﻟﺤﻴﺎة اﻟﻌﻤﻠﻴﺔ وﺣﺎﻟﺔ اﻟﻨﺴﻴﺞ وﺗﻐﻴﺮاﺗﻪ وﻣﺎﻃﺮأ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻛﻞ ذﻟﻚ . ﺑﻌﺪ ازاﻟﺖ ا ﺳﻮار ﺣﺘﻰ اﻟﻮﺻﻮل ﻟﻠﻮﺿﻊ اﻟﺤﺎﻟﻲ

2.2 Social Issues
- Vehicular Circulation: street characterized with the passage of a huge number of cars, which affected the safety of pedestrians and shoppers and tourists in the historic district and even the owners of the shops while unloading their goods, there is no clear policy for that. - Parking: Street faces a few parking space, which led to the non-systematic random parking , some of them parked his car on the sidewalk and blocked the pedestrians way and the other entrances to roads on both sides of Al-Dahab Street, causing severe traffic jams. - Hygiene: the street suffering from a lack of hygiene, because the range of waste is not spread along the street but placed in certain places, making it difficult to access them easily, and accumulate the waste which leads to the emission of unpleasant odors and the spread of disease.

3.0 Case Study Las Ramblas, Barcelona, Spain Las Ramblas is often considered the most famous street in Barcelona and well known around the world, exemplifying Barcelona’s success in having public spaces for people to meet and socialize, as well as walk their daily lives. The street, which is actually broken into several distinct boulevards, is often crowded with both locals and tourists s/HQJWK NP PL

3.0 Case Study 3.1 Las Ramblas, Barcelona, Spain Character and Details The street has a center divider with traffic running on either side. The area outside of the divider is lined with shops and restaurants of every type, while the inner part of the divider has tiny market stands - covered by colorful umbrellas - that sell everything from flowers to live , canaries and sweet dough churros. Beautiful trees line the walkway and provide shade Activities and Users The street performers and array of art, one place of note along the corridor is the Gran Teatre del Liceu, or simply Licieu, Barcelona’s renowned opera house. A public museum of contemporary art is located on the Raval side of Rambla de Santa Monica, Centre d’Art Santa Monica, and has regular exhibitions of international artists. Issues Drunken tourists, desperate prostitutes and petty crooks , tawdry and dangerous. Fights, vandalism and arrests marred celebrations last year to mark Barcelona’s winning of both Spain’s national soccer cup and the league title. But soccer-related violence is the least of the problems Las Ramblas faces. Lessons Learned The Ramblas “is a street clearly designed for people to be on, to walk, to meet, to talk, “The Ramblas ... succeeds so well that it would stand out anywhere.” The buildings provide the street with clear edges, while the large number of windows and building entrances provides a sense of fluidity. Moreover, the street has defined its own program of events by permitting performances by local artists and musicians. This makes its visual and cultural landscape different with every visit.

High environmental quality (HQE) is a French environmental concept dating back to the early 1990s, which led to the implementation of registration as a trademark . inspired by the high energy performance label to which it adds a sanitary, hydrological and vegetal dimension. That can be integrated into architectural and engineering offerings to improve the design or renovation of buildings and cities by limiting Their harmful environmental impact. Concerning the energy aspect. 14 goals of a better environment quality in buildings : -Goals (3-1) Construction methods -Goals (7-4) Environmental management -Goals (11-8) Specializes in comfortable -Goals (14-12) Health care The HQE site charter envisages taking into account the following 14 targets for a better environmental quality of the buildings: - Ecoconstruction targets (1 to 3): - Eco-management targets (4 to 7): - Comfort targets (8 to 11): - Health targets (12 to 14): For a project to be certified it must reach 7 targets maximum with at least 4 targets at the performing level and 3 at the very high level. -2 -1 0 +1 +2

strategy Outdoor dining
Strategy
strategy the new paving design on the existing palette of austral black granite with a lighter more detailed design the new design will introduce different sized granite pavers with varying surface finishes and tones . LED lights and stainless insets will play with reflection and recall the sparkling light the logic behind this is threefold : - a lighter paving stone will help visually define reinforcing pedestrian awareness and assisting with safety. - an embellished paving pattern will help to create a distinct boulevard. - more detailed paving in the central location is therefore less lik.
Details space for people Safety and accessibility
Trees will be placed at a regular interval along Aldahab Street, creating a strong visual alignment. removal of traffic lanes, we h ave the opportunity to place trees in a location where they will be physically unimpeded and have better access to sunlight By moving the trees away from buildings we can ensure that they will be healthier and more vigorous than their existing counterparts. We also believe that we can increase the number of trees on Aldahab Street by around 30%, making Aldahab Street a more attractive and comfortable walking environment.
Details
Greening In order to avoid a dark street, however, with too much overshadowing in winter, we are recommending a deciduous tree with a light and open canopy. The changing colour of this canopy will add to the legibility and visual appeal of Aldahab Street. Species Cordia sebestena - Bucida buceras - Conocarpus erectus
Today there are only 2 outdoor dining on George Street, The transformation of George Street offers great opportunity for increased dining, both indoor and out. The City is now studying how much dining is appropriate and where it should occur. We are working to update our policies to encourage this positive change.
Event furniture A pedestrian-friendly street also offers the potential for temporary furniture associated with events. The City will identify the best places for these events and determine the types of furniture and infrastructure that would be appropriate to make these types of events a success.
A more comfortable street Aldahab Street today has little to offer pedestrians. There is nowhere to sit, no bubblers, few trees and no pleasant spots in which to linger. The reclamation of traffic lanes for people coupled with the rollout of our new furniture will create desirable places for people to stop.
Lighting for people Our vision is to create a pedestrian focused boulevard that has a distinct night-time identity. The lighting design will satisfy all the statutory requirements for vehicles and safety, but will re-focus the street as a place for people. Street tree foliage will be highlighted to give scale and texture. Heritage buildings will be accented, places to sit will be made more inviting and squares and lanes will be celebrated. New pedestrian-scaled light poles will transform into celebratory lighting during events and special occasions. All this will help to reinforce George Street as a world class pedestrian boulevard.
Details
Smart poles Structural engineering advice indicates that the Smart poles are incapable of supporting overhead wires to power the light rail. We have engaged HUB to design a new Smart pole, a ‘kit of parts’ that can do everything we need. It will sit comfortably with both the existing Smart poles and the City’s new public furniture.

14.0 Mood Board 14.1 Facade Treatment 1. An urban vacuum.
The site of the contest supposes an urban emptiness in the middle of the dense urban plot of the district of Farró. A small crack inside a city too built. The desire to maintain this vacuum, promoting its public use, has been the premise of the whole proposal.
2. The value of preexistence.
We understand the Villa Urània as a piece with a historical and symbolic value for the neighborhood and we propose its rehabilitation and integration in the new program to welcome multipurpose uses, accessible and open to all neighbors.
3. Construction systems.
We propose a structural system based on some porticoes formed by concrete pillars and pre-slabs of 2 m. Wide. The resulting interior spaces are multipurpose spaces that can accommodate multiple programs and future changes of use without undergoing any substantial modification.

4. Place materials.
We choose to claim the condition of emptiness between medians. We propose a facade that combines blind parts of uncoated ceramic work with transparent parts practicable that have a second skin formed by a lattice of prefabricated ceramic slats with an interior metallic substructure.
5. Energy control.
The new building is designed to achieve self-sufficiency, reduce energy demand and consumption in installations through natural ventilation systems, solar protection and air renewal. By placing the ground floor above the natural terrain, the excavation is reduced to the basement and allows ventilation and natural lighting, thus saving air extractions and reducing light consumption. We propose to allocate the savings in facilities to the maintenance of green areas, the renaturalization of the exterior gardens and the planting of new trees and vegetation.
