editor’s note
Welcome March “Cream coloured ponies and crisp apple strudels Doorbells and sleigh bells and schnitzel with noodles Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings These are a few of my favorite things” Lyrics from the all time-favourite childhood movie soundtrack, sung by Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music suddenly crossed my mind today. I also remembered what my mum told me, “Eat your vegetables!” or “Have some fruit, don’t be lazy dear.” Well, fruit and vegetables might not have been my favourite things when I was a kid, compared to chocolate – little did I know then that this is actually a superfood! Eating the right food, as opposed to taking synthetic vitamins or pills can bring many health benefits to our bodies, enhance our moods and even help us stay slim. In this edition we explore the concept of superfoods and discover that they are easy to find around us – with some great cafes and restaurants right here in Bali that focus on fresh, healthy offerings. Our Musings feature, Superfood for a Super Life (p.22) spotlights the benefits of this nutrient dense food group, and gives tips on where to find your superfood fix in Bali. We uncover the newest juice / salad bar in Seminyak, Rumba (p.26,) and check out the sashimi at the trendy Kai-Ten Zushi (p.30.) In this issue we also enjoy ‘conscious cuisine’ at River Café, Maya Ubud (p.38), eat wholesome home-style food at Bali Buda, Kerobokan (p.64), come across Coffee Golden Rabbits Brewery House (p.56) and discover delicious food and one of the island’s greatest love stories at Rondji’s at The Blanco Renaissance Museum. Our exciting news this month is that, as of this issue, Let’s eat! your culinary

guide will now be available in the first week of each month. We are happy to hit the stands earlier and will continue to share the latest culinary trends, as well as hot restaurant news and reviews, and hope to remain one of your favourite things too! There is a famous saying by Adelle Davis, “We are indeed much more than what we eat, but what we eat can nevertheless help us to be much more than what we are” In this spirit, let’s add superfood to our list of favorite things.

Cooking with Colours
Make your life brighter and healthier by introducing more vibrancy to your diet. Let’s eat! reveals the secrets of eating by colour.
Yellow and orange fruits, such as oranges, lemons and mangos are very rich in beta-carotene, a source of vitamin A, which is super important for the immune and reproductive systems.
Dark brown chocolate contains phenylethylamine, which has a positive effect on your mood and cognitive health.
Green vegetables are nutrient rich and the perfect diet food – weighing in at less than 50 calories per cup. They are also delicious, and easy to combine with other food.
The purplish-blue hues of sweet potatoes and blueberries makes them rich in potassium, vitamin C, and anthocyanin, which help keep your brain sharp.
In general red fruits, like strawberries and pomegranate are high in vitamin C, potassium and fibre which make them good for the heart, as well as lowering the risk of cancer and diabetes.

Superfood for a super life The notion that certain foods have higher nutritional value than others is hardly new – but the categorisation, ‘superfood’ is a relatively recent phenomenon, perhaps reflecting a world-wide trend towards healthier eating habits. The superfood group generally includes natural, nutritionally dense food like berries, salmon, nuts and cacao which are vibrant, low in calories, high in antioxidants and packed with vitamins and minerals.

Coming into the tropical lobby of The Akmani Hotel Legian, take the elevator to the fifth floor and you will arrive at Bel Piatto, offering an international menu with a good selection of Italian cuisine. Whether it’s lunch, or dinner, don’t forget to ask the Executive Chef about the daily specials. In addition to views over a secret lagoonlike swimming pool, you will see how space is maximised with vertical gardens, to give customers a comfortable feeling when dining at Bel Piatto. The latest buzz from the minimaliststyle restaurant is Executive Chef Adi Yulyawan, with his range of organic cuisine. “Organic cuisine is not only about using organic ingredients, but also minimising cooking methods,” he says, while adding that he also avoids using cooking oil. In this ‘green cooking’ method, fruit has a much wider playground, and turns up in appetisers, main course and dessert. According to Yulyawan, the demand for healthy cuisine has definitely increased in recent years.

The best thing about Ruth’s Desserts is that it caters to everybody’s tastes. There’s the sinfully dark Chocolate Cake made from Belgian chocolate, but then there’s also the Orange Almond Gluten Free Cake which tastes light, not as sweet and has a nutty flavour. Steamed Dory with Red Pepper and Orange Sauce
“Special food can only be made when you cook with your heart,” says Executive Chef Janu Wirama, of Mercure Bali Harvestland who has more than 15-years experience in the kitchen. His unique creation of Steamed Dory with Red Pepper and Orange Sauce, served with a side of savoury stuffed potato and parmesan cheese, certainly sounds pretty special to us. Ingredients: 250 grams dory fillet 5 grams sliced zucchini 1 teaspoon of salt 1 teaspoon of pepper ½ teaspoon of red pepper powder 1 large whole potato 1 gram fresh parsley 1 teaspoon parmesan cheese 2 teaspoons cream cheese ½ teaspoon of paprika powder 1 teaspoon butter 1 fresh orange (squeezed)
Dory Mix dory with salt, pepper and red pepper powder. Roll and cover it with sliced zucchini then steam for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, put the butter in the pan, pour in squeezed orange, add cheese cream and mix slowly. Add salt, pepper and red pepper, and sauce is ready to be served.
Savoury stuffed potato Bake the potato in the oven. Remove the centre of the potato and mash with paprika powder, parmesan cheese and parsley, then stuff back into the potato skin. Put the additional parmesan cheese on top and bake until golden.

The lounge is also the setting for coffee-making classes, with all sort of coffee machines, from French press to drip coffee are available. First served is a popular Peaberry Black Coffee. Slightly nutty with a medium body, the coffee is perfect for a much-needed caffeine fix. A rounder bean, peaberry has a more wholesome taste than the more usual coffee beans. My Ice Coffee is wonderfully tasty and quite appropriate for a hot afternoon such as today.
Ice Coffee
“This is our guests’ favourite,” says the manager. “First, we mix ice, coffee, creamer and sugar then we freeze it. We then mix this iced coffee with another batch of fresh coffee, creating a smooth, blended ice coffee.” He leaves us while he goes to prepare the much anticipated Kopi Luwak, civet coffee. Harvested from the excretions of Sumatra’s wild Asian palm civets, then cleaned and roasted, Kopi Luwak is one of the world’s most coveted coffee blends. Civets eat only the ripest juiciest coffee berries as well as wild forest fruits, which ferment during the digestive process creating a unique taste that is light and smooth. Needless to say, after all this delicious coffee, we leave the factory happy, wide eyed and quite refreshed. Eve

Scrumptious Sri Lanka
62 let’s eat!
A tiny island in the shape of an eye drop, located just below India, Sri Lanka has quickly garnered a reputation as the place to be. An Incredible mix of culture, pristine beaches, and rich heritage of art, architecture and cuisine, makes Sri Lanka an exciting destination in Asia. I had no expectations when I visited Sri Lanka. Friends who had been there promised me a beatific experience, warm welcome and seriously underrated cuisine. Apart from watching celebrity chef Peter Kuruvita cooking his way around picturesque places in Sri Lanka – constantly using coconut in everything, I had no idea what Sri Lankan cuisine looked or tasted like. A home-cooked meal was my first exposure to Sri Lankan cuisine, when a friend kindly invited me to stay with her family. Warm white rice and crispy pappadum were the basic essentials, and then came four other kinds of dishes: yellow chicken curry, jackfruit curry, chopped gatu kola salad with shredded coconut and daal made with lentils. While assisting my friend’s mother cooking in front of her stove, I noticed that she used clay pots to cook, as well as freshly picked curry leaves and chillies from the garden.

Sri lanka
Leaving my friend’s warm home in Kandy, a city well-known for its Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, I continued my journey south by train, remarkably still called an ‘observation saloon’ in colonial fashion. Watching the hill county and its vast green tea plantations, made me realise why Ceylon, the old name of Sri Lanka, produces some of the best tea in the world. Each time we stopped at a station, snack sellers would find their way into the saloon and from them I managed to taste lots of deep fried morsels including samosas. Galle, a historical old fort town which has endured the Portugese, Dutch and English occupation for centuries was my next destination. I would say Galle is far more advanced in tourism hospitality compared to the rest of Sri Lanka and therefore, there are plenty of good restaurants available for visitors. My final stop was Colombo. Most of the travellers I met were quite indifferent to this cosmopolitan capital of Sri Lanka but in my experience, good food and interesting people can always be found in a big city. One of the most enjoyable Sri Lankan meals was in fact found here: a black pork curry. With that special dish, I closed my Sri Lankan trip and declared it a success. Eve
