editor’s note

Bali with Kids As I live in Bali, most of my friends, who live in Bandung and Jakarta, like to think that I know Bali inside and out, and always ask me questions relating to their holiday plans. Sometimes I think I should list down all their questions (and my answers,) so I already have my own “Bali Guide Handbook,” to make it easier for me. The most popular questions are, “Do you know a good villa, overlooking the beach that isn’t too pricey? Where is the best place for a honeymoon?” and “I’m going to have a long weekend in Bali, can you recommend a cosy place in a quiet area, but not too far from the city?” Of course, as I already have my own permanent place to live, I am not so familiar with the ‘best villas in Bali’, so I usually suggest my friends check online. After that, I distract them by saying, “Hey let’s meet up when you’re here!” Which almost always leads to another question, such as “Ok! You choose the place, but hey, I’m with the family, are there any kid-friendly places you can suggest?” Fortunately, I must say, I am glad to be able to answer this last question with this month’s ‘Bali with Kids’ issue! Our Musings section is packed full of fun dining suggestions for the whole family (p. 22), while the colourful sunset and bohemian mood at Kakilima (p.38), and an action-packed sailing trip to Nusa Lembongan (p. 34) are also great options for the young and the young at heart. Our Victoria Sponge Cake recipe is bound to be a hit with the whole family (p. 60), while those who like the goodness of raw, healthy eating will enjoy the Living Food Lab (p.42.) In this edition we also discover Chara, a new Caribbean-style restaurant (p.26), visit Manado for Hungerlust (p.62) and gain fascinating insights from The Specialists (p.50.)

Deep inside Kerobokan there remains a slice of green paradise that Bali is famous for. Patio Restaurant lies within the lush boutique resort of Plataran, and here we enjoy a royal Balinese dining treatment amidst tall and wondrously old trees. A gravelly plataran, or terrace, in Javanese makes its way into a beautiful compound of Javanese wooden joglos. A host takes us down a few stone steps into the restaurant. As if the artfully decorated open-air restaurant is not enough, we are then gently ushered down to a rickety bamboo bridge over a small river.

A Carnival of

Flavour

The Caribbean and Bali are thousands of miles apart but a recent creative collaboration brought them closer together through food. Chara Caribbean Restaurant, located on the quiet side of Kerobokan provides a tasty getaway to learn about Caribbean culture through cuisine. A lively splash of colours, and tropical tunes immediately whisk me away from my familiar surroundings when I step into the restaurant, where large abstract figures decorate the walls. We are met by one of the owners, who introduces herself as Chara and tells us, “A bunch of us simply love the rich flavour of Caribbean food which is a fusion of African, Indian, European, Arabian and Creole cuisine – just to name a few, and we thought it was time that Bali got to share this fantastic food, considering the warm weather and tropical lifestyle that is so similar to the Caribbean.”

ISLAND In The Sun

Just one and a half hour sailing from Benoa Harbour, there lies a tiny island often described as “the way southern Bali used to be.” The name of that ‘old Bali’ island is Nusa Lembongan and on its picturesque Mushroom Bay, stands the charming Hai Tide Beach Resort. 34 let’s eat!

The boat drops us right in front of a large bamboo house. Still recovering from the joy of being an Aquanaut as well as the sensation of being submerged five metres underwater and playing with the fish, I managed to walk carefully onto the white beach. Sun worshippers are sprawled all over the sand and on the colourful beanbags in front of the Hai Bar & Grill. This turns out to be the perfect beachfront bar and restaurant for our relaxing getaway from the city. Diverse gourmet meals, from fresh catch-of-the-day to wood fire pizza, are available to satisfy even the fussiest eater. Together with my friend, we order enough food to last a weekend. The sun is slowly setting, leaving vibrant red brushstrokes on the sky. Our shared entrée is the Grilled Jumbo Prawn, gorgeously plated and timely grilled with a light lemon and garlic flavour. Thinking that no place is better suited to eat seafood than a tiny tropical island, I have a Grilled Mahi Mahi with Coriander Rice. The fresh fish fillet comes with a raw Balinese shallot condiment that suits my Asian palate perfectly, while the rice received a special treatment of being stir-fried with coriander and spices. My friend wolfed down every bit of his Beef Tenderloin Steak and devoured the black pepper sauce. Truthfully, we are slightly dumbfounded to find such a fine gourmet dish on Nusa Lembongan, as the island is not really known for its food.

Being a guest of the resort allows me to use the Bali Hai Beach Club‘s facilities as well as joining the fun activities in the Bali Hai Cruises’ Pontoon on Lembongan Bay. Inspired by “Nomadic journeys and those who dine under the stars upon colourful terrains and majestic landscapes,” Kakilima describes itself as “a warung with a million dollar view.” Expansive lawns gently slope to the craggy coast of Canggu, creating plenty of space for kids to roam, frolic, jump on the trampoline, kick a football or cool down under the sprinklers. Meanwhile, parents can kick back on the Thai cushions that spread out across the lawns, and soak up the sunset while sipping Sangria and munching on Middle Eastern /Mediterranean-inspired food. Dj’s and live music performances from Thursday to Sunday include ‘Gypsy night’ with a big bonfire, flaming torches, pit barbecue and acoustic music. For those who would rather sit than sprawl, wooden trellis tables are set amidst pandanus palms strung with lanterns, while the wildly colourful wooden pavilion that houses the main dining area has a definite gypsy vibe with its swirling floral motifs, pink and red directors chairs, hand-painted lanterns and garden beds flourishing with tropical flowers. We plant ourselves on an oversized sofa in a garden pavilion draped in crimson organza, and feel confident that we have secured the best seat in the house. Kakilima is named for the colourful traditional food carts that ply the streets of Bali, and literally translate as ‘five feet.’ Two carts are set up in the garden and adorned with strings of bright red chillis and bunches of garlic. One proffers house BBQ specialties of brochettes – such as chicken, beef and prawn, braised in tasty Moroccan spices. The other houses a grill, where your choice is cooked ‘a la minute.’

Eclectic Eatery Live acoustic music, eclectic art, retro décor and a global menu provide the ingredients for Art Kafe, an atmospheric eatery on Monkey Forest Road, Ubud. Frosted windows, exposed brick walls and cosy sofas make me feel like I am in a friend’s living room, while the paintings, flower motifs and gilded mirrors that adorn the walls add plenty of colour and character. Designed as a relaxed and informal space to enjoy hearty, home-style food, the Art Kafe makes a lovely respite from shopping and sight seeing in Ubud, while live acoustic music on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sunday create a lively setting for dinner and drinks. We take a seat in the garden area overlooking a small overgrown temple and I revive with an excellent Long Macchiato served in a dainty china floral cup and saucer, which reminds me of my grandmother. The café was created by Feby Jabrik, whose husband Tipi is a famous Balinese surfer, and founder of Mantra (a hip bar/eatery in Seminyak,) and reflects her love of cooking for her family, with recipes collected during the couples travels on the international surf circuit.
