SPOT THE DIFFERENCE.
Welcome to the International Radio Festival The International Radio Festival (IRF) was founded to celebrate the world’s most consumed, and most influential medium, Music Radio, and represents the world’s first and only public on-air festival of its kind. The IRF is a must attend for all those who love radio, offering the unique chance to “Listen to how the World Sounds” and enjoy an amazing “music radio packed” on-air set of unique radio shows. And this year, the IRF broadcasts for the first time from its very own radio studio at the infamous Kaufleuten along Talacker in Zürich, where for three weeks you can drop in and watch radio being made by an incredible diverse variety of professional radio makers right down to first time producers sharing one thing in common: curating music for radio broadcast. Last but not least, no IRF would be complete without its live-on-air parties, and this year we are spoiling you with three events kicking off with Ibiza Sonica at Zurich’s Zukunft Club on Thu 4th September; followed on Friday the 5th at Kaufleutens Clubsaal with DJ Premier together featuring the Hip Hop don’t Stop radio show live on Kiss FM Berlin; and on Sat the 6th September the finale presents London’s XFM with Gabby Sanderson and the UK’s nr 1 Indie Club Night The Propaganda, presenting DJ sets by the likes of Blur, the Libertines and Bloc Party... and of course, only on-air at the International Radio Festival.

Your Royal Ruler When I started my career as a DJ our big inspiration in the UK and across greater Europe was Radio Luxembourg which only broadcast at night on AM. Pop music on the BBC was seriously absent but when the pirate ships sailed into town, everything changed. After two years on Radio Caroline, I joined Luxembourg for 16 years. During those years the BBC and ILR developed and came out fighting. They took time to get their due to the Musician’s Union and ‘needletime restrictions’, a method of blackmail to protect live musicians interests. Back in my day, when I broadcast I knew that 50 million+ music loving fans were listening at the exact same time. That will never happen again. The phrase ‘be careful what you wish for’ has never been more apt. We fought hard for a radio network and won. We now have more radio than we could have imagined but it is in such an over-populated industry both on FM and online, that many great broadcasts and broadcasters are not recognised. Today radio faces it’s biggest challenge since the pre-pirate days, it’s format has changed in the face of big business and the personality DJ is less prevalent. I am a big believer that the personality DJ and great radio programmes concentrating on genres of music, are the future, not the past. To be part of the process of deciding who and what should be showcased at the IRF gives me great pleasure. It’s important we highlight the great DJs, programmes, stations and channels, to let the world know that Radio (and it’s great communicators), is where the magic lies, and that it remains the world’s most consumed medium.
So bring it on! Tony Prince President, International Radio Festival Advisory Board and founder of DMC and Mixmag 4

At the end of 2012 the Englishlanguage radio station Kiss 92FM (tagline: „All the great songs in one place.“) went onair in Singapore's. Today it's already a permanent feature of the country's media and cultural landscape. One of the young station's formulas of success is called: John Klass. His super popular „Evening Drive Home Show“ will be aired live from the IRF studios.
This is how the modern Arabian world sounds like: Star FM from Abu Dhabi closes the gap between tradition and the modern times easily – with a fascinating program of Arabian Top 40, Western hits as well as interviews with celebrities and news. Rania Younes hosts the morning show “Sabaho” at our festival as one of the star guests.
Since the beginning of this year London’s Soho community has finally its own radio station and herewith a voice. The station’s aim is to reflect the culture of Soho in every possible way: Bringing together musicians, artists, film makers, chefs, poets and the generally curious. Eddie Piller of Acid Jazz fame hosts the IRF show for them.
Since 2011 Hoxton FM is the new playground for the creative minds of London’s East End, for its young, talented and aspiring DJs and prestigious veterans of electronic music and beyond. “The London Show” is a weekly report on Thursday evenings from and for the scene hosted by the larger than life Normski and station owner Dan Formless.

The most feminine radio station in Russia is called Radio Romantika. The station is a part of the country’s biggest broadcasting holding company VKPM and is targeted at young women between 20 and 40, playing Western and Russian romantic hits from today and yesteryear. And the people behind Radio Romantika state that their venture is not just a music radio station, but is all about attitude, moods, feelings and emotions. We at the IRF are utterly delighted to welcome this very unique station at our festival for the very first time. From Russia with love.

Clara Amfo RnB, Soul, Hiphop, Urban
This year’s winner of the „Best US/Canada Campus Radio Show“ award (hosted by iBiquity Digital, CMJ, Mixcloud and the IRF) goes to “Recess: with Spinelli”. The Thursday evening show is aired on WSPN, one of few college radio stations in the US solely made and run by students.
BBC Radio One’s sister station was launched in 2002 and broadcasts via DAB and the web. 1Xtra is targeted at a younger audience and plays mostly urban music. On weekend mornings the lovely voice of Clara Amfo awakes the listeners and washes away every possible hangover the urban lifestyle can implicate. For our festival we scheduled her show for a Saturday afternoon, just to be on the safe side that you’re not sleeping off your “night before” during Clara’s two hour showcase.

Kiss FM Berlin Hip Hop Don’t Stop
All the years as Radio Fiume Ticino’s programme director the avid DJ and music aficionado Matteo Vanetti has collected a stupendous playlist of music of a more throttled pace. That’s why he founded the webstation COTN (Creatures Of The Night) in 2009, playing a seamless mix of lounge, ambient, new age, chillout and restrained deep house.

„The beat of Berlin“ that’s what Kiss FM calls itself and plays mainly Hiphop, RnB and Pop music. When the station started out in 1993 the studio was situated in an old bakery in Neukölln, later moving to the shopping mall “Das Schloss” in Steglitz. We welcome one of Berlin’s leading heads of Hiphop culture, Giampiero Termini aka DJ Giam with his show “Hip Hop Don’t Stop”. He will later that evening join no other than überlegendary DJ Premier at the Kaufleuten Festsaal to play some proper no-nonsense Classic Hiphop – and it won’t stop, yes yes y’all.

NTS London
Cervellini in fuga Pop, Rock, Top 40
Our winner of this year’s Mixcloud hosted Online Radio award for “Best Station” goes to NTS from London, the, well, best radio station in the world today. Sometimes it’s a hard decision for a jury to announce a winner for such a broad category. But not a lot of radio makers, music lovers and even media experts would dare to question this ruling. NTS was founded in April 2011 by Femi Adeyemi and rose rocket-like to become the most groundbreaking, forward-thinking and highly esteemed web station on the planet. At this year’s IRF you will get a little glimpse at the innovative power of NTS and will most probably hear music you never heard before. Be aware!
The station from Milano doesn’t belong, like the name might suggest, to the RTL group. The abbreviation simply stands for: “Radio Transmissioni Lombarde”. The radio startet in 1975 as a local station in Bergamo, is by now on air nationwide and since 2012 is Italy’s most listened-to radio station.

Tony Prince was amongst the presenters of the very first pirate radio, Radio Caroline, which went on air exactly 50 years ago. First known as “Your Royal Ruler” he switched in 1967 to Radio Luxembourg, where he soon became its programme director. At this year’s IRF Tony Prince will present exclusively and only on our frequencies “Flashback Radio”: The best from 50 years Radio Caroline and Radio Luxembourg, including lots of interviews and even more amusing anecdotes of an eventful radio career.
When Gordon Mac initiated the radio station Mi-Soul three years ago he took almost the complete crew on board with which he caused quite a stir back in the days at Kiss FM: Paul „Trouble“ Anderson, Dr. Bob Jones, Jazzie B and Tosca are now amongst the high-profile presenters on the London based station that celebrates the past, present and future of soulful music, be it House, R&B, Rap, Reggae or Soul itself.
The London based radio station Monocle 24 grew out of the Monocle Weekly, a podcast which first appeared in 2008 and hit download figures as high as 250,000 per month. The 24/7 programme of the radio station started officially in 2011 and focuses mainly on current affairs, business, culture, design, food, hospitality, print media and urbanism.
XFM, the station officially founded in 1997 is one of the big players of the British radio landscape. The slogan “Music that rocks” clearly differentiates the programming from other stations across London, Manchester and Glasgow. Nowhere else on the Island can you listen to nothing but rock, indie, alternative and hiphop with a big loud “X” as a common thread – and that 24/7.

Electro Jil Nu Disco, House, Techno, Trap
When Radio Nova, the French capital’s homegrown station with a reputation bigger than life, went on air in 1981 it literally changed the way of radio music programming worldwide, thanks to its creator Jean-Francois Bizot and its open-minded DJs and selectors like Laurent Garnier, Gilb’r and Ivan Smagghe assembling a programme more left-field than ever before but deeply rooted in club culture.
One of the most outstanding stations within the huge North African radio landscape is Algiers’ Jil FM. The station is the first media company in Algeria directed at a younger audience, in a country where people under 35 represent 70% of the population. Figureheads of the diverse programme are DJ Boss and DJ Tarik with their own Saturday night show “Electro Jil”.

Backstage Radio is a groundbreaking new concept of democratised radio culture. The listeners can take the tagline “change the music but not the station” literally: Everyone can choose music from MX3’s rich repertoire via the web interface and play it on air. Samuel Vuillermoz will comment in his show what all the “virtual DJs” will play during the two hours.
The 1997 founded station Radio Fiume Ticino is the best example how the 2300 hours of sun that on average shine on the canton of Ticino effect a radio programme: Lots of great new pop music, laid-back jazz and, of course some Swiss-Italian productions put you definitely in a real good mood.

SRF Virus Switzerland
Radionovela Dreampop, Indie, Alternative
SRF Virus Cypher Almost exactly a year ago the probably most appealing and charming Swiss radio station ever went on air. Julie FM is the up-close-and-personal diary of Julie, a young French girl living in Zurich telling her kinky, tragic romantic everyday tales. At this year’s IRF we will be treated with five exclusive “Radionovelas”, accompanied by the musical director of the station, DJ Jauss.
As the name indicates, SRF Virus is a part of the Swiss public broadcasting organisation SRG SSR. The station, on air since 1999, plays mainly music of today, which is targeted directly at a young audience. With interactive shows, podcasts to download and special shows on a regular basis hosted by Swiss artists SRF Virus adapts to the altered habits of young media consumers.

Happy Hour
«Heavy Duty Tooty Fruity Rock ‘n’ Roll Hour» and «Hier spielt die Musik» Rock, Indie, Rock’n’Roll, Heavy
Lots of Swiss people may need reminding about the fact that the darling of the Swiss media landscape, the super popular TV host, Röbi Koller, started his impressive career as a radio pirate on Radio 24 in its Sturm and Stress period. His exclusive show “Happy Hour” will not only be for us, but also for the whole Swiss radio community a very special moment: Röbi Koller back on air with his Listen Listen!
About 4 years ago Shiva Arbabi, co-founder of the SRF youth radio Virus, started the web station Piratenradio. The enfant terrible of the Swiss radio scene offers together with her team everything that doesn’t fit somewhere else on air and comments a programme with such a big mouth it would – at her own judgement – infringe every concession and cause cardiac death for all moralisers.

UNIKOM Radiostations Switzerland
Solid Steel Radio Show Coldcut’s Matt Black and Jonathan More started their own radio show Solid Steel way back in 1988 not only to play their favourite records but also to show off their unique cutup technique live on air. First their two-hour show show ran on London’s Kiss FM and later, after leaving the station, was syndicated world wide, enjoying airtime today on 20 radio stations around the world. Host Jon More is often joined by DK, DJ Food and rolling guests. The IRF in cooperation with Mixcloud just awarded Solid Steel with this year’s “Best Show” Online Radio accolade.
During the International Radio Festival we are introducing – in close collaboration with LIMUS (Layer for Innovation and Migration of Urban broadcasting areas) – ten of the stations united as UNIKOM (union of non-commercial local radios) and very soon available also in Greater Zurich area. There are for example.: Radio Fiume Ticino from Locarno, Toxic.fm from St. Gallen, Uzic from Lausanne, the MX3.ch-driven Backstage Radio from Berne, RadioIndustrie from Zug and Radio Kaiseregg from Tafers.
