Hobart Hobart, Australia’s most southerly capital is one of the most picture perfect cities in the world. With towering Mt Wellington standing guard over the city, it has spectacular views, a real nautical feel and the sandstone buildings provide an olde worlde appearance to this modern multicultural town. Hobart Day Out Morning: How about a morning running through the bush in a game of Laser Tag? (see ad p.16) Only 10 mins from Hobart CBD, but you would think you were Rambo in a forest anywhere in the world. Lunch: Refuel with some healthy tucker at Subway. (see voucher p.37) Arvo: Do the Museum (p.10), Maritime Museum across the road, the interpretive trail at the waterfront, or with the older kids – Do the Rivulet Tour.
Head east to the Tasman Peninsula for a taste of convict life or south to the fabulous Huon area (p.19) or a catch a ferry across to Hobart’s playground, Bruny Island- Whatever your style or pace, Hobart makes a great base for exploring what makes Tassie great! Water dominates, with lots of beaches and sailing activities and the Constitution Dock area is its centrepiece. Salamanca Place is not to be missed on a Saturday as it comes alive with one of the world’s truly great market experiences.
Dinner/Evening: Book a dinner cruise with Captain Fell’s (unbelievable voucher off on p.37). If seafaring is not your thing, Soho (p.14) and La Porchetta (p.14) have Kids Eat Free!

Hobart has one large shopping mall at Eastlands in Rosny which contains most of the national “chain” stores. It’s open… Mon to Thu: 9am to 4pm Sat: 9am to 4pm
Fri: 9am to 9pm Sun: 10am to 4pm
Around the Cat and Fiddle Arcade in the city there are many of the same type shops and Channel Court at Kingston is growing all the time and services those folk from the south.
Along Main Rd in Glenorchy and Moonah there is a huge variety of smaller shops where you will find hours of shopping fun. Most are open Monday to Friday and Saturday Morning. There is also a “growing” Homemaker Centre in Cambridge.

Hobart has an abundance of casual eateries and “food experiences” that are perfect for a relaxed family meal or that special occasion. What is the local speciality???? Seafood of course!!!
Handy Hint! Looking for a healthier fast food? Try Souvlaki Hut in Kingston.
Scallops are the local delicacy but it’s all great. (Try SoHo (p.14) in South Hobart for the scallop lunch special or the Foreshore Hotel in Lauderdale). To the north of the city is the North Hobart restaurant strip. National dishes from just about every country on the planet can be found there, and our favourites are Fish 149 and La Porchetta (p.14).
Handy Hint! Lunch from one of the fish punts at Constitution Dock is a winner with all the family. Scallops, prawns, fish – all fresh and the right price!

LetsGoKids Tasmania 2010 - VISIT
Devonport -
The City of Devonport Situated on the Mersey River is the home port of the vehicle/passenger ferries Spirit of Tasmania I and II. This is an important link for all of Tasmania to the mainland and they sail daily. (You should see them turn around in the river – fascinating and the kids will love it.) The town has a great coastline and popular walking tracks lead from the city centre, along the Mersey River foreshore parklands, all the way around to Mersey Bluff Beach.
Home Hill, which was built in 1916 and administered by National Trust contains many interesting and historic mementos of Tasmania’s only Prime Minister, the late Joseph Lyons and his wife Dame Enid Lyons. Both are within a short drive of the city centre. You can also visit attractions such as the Tasmanian Arboretum. This is a unique botanic Tree Park of native and exotic species sited on 45 glorious hectares, 10km south of Devonport at Eugenana. Spot a platypus on Founders Lake, take a walk or picnic with family and friends.
Devonport Day Out Morning: Sooo many choices!! Start the day by watching “The Spirit” turn around in the Mersey River, then jump onboard for a vintage train ride at Don River Railway, or test your science skills at the Imaginarium. The kids will be entertained for hours!
Hear stories celebrating the region’s history and heritage, and take a step back in time at the Maritime Museum which features a superb collection of detailed models from the days of sail, through the age of steam to the present seagoing passenger ferries. LetsGoKids Tasmania 2010 - VISIT
Lunch: The Christmas Hill Raspberry Farm is just a short drive out of town on the way to Deloraine and cater well for kids. Check out Anvers Chocolates and Ashgrove Cheese on the way back. Arvo: On the way back, a game of mini golf at the challenging layout at Devonport Mini Golf. Dinner: Head to La Pisa in Best Street for an affordable family meal. Evening: Try your hand ten pin bowling at Devonport 10 Pin. From October to March. Spy on some Little Penguins as dusk falls at Lillico Beach.

The small hinterland towns of Meander, Chudleigh and Mole Creek are picture perfect and contain prime farming land. Call in at the Honey Farm (see below) for some sampling and you will be glad you did. Mole Creek has some caves to explore and the countryside is known to be a favoured area for Tasmanian Tigers. They are supposed to have been hunted to extinction 80 years ago, but the locals around Mole Creek aren’t so sure. There is a wonderful FREE exhibit regarding all things “Tiger” next to the pub in Mole Creek and there is a warm welcome, cold beer and good food served up from Doug and his staff. They have a great outside area where the kids can run around.

Stanley – Wow… Look at that big thing! These are the first impressions you’ll have when driving into Stanley. The big thing of course is “The Nut” – North West Tasmania’s equivalent to Ayers Rock. It looks like Ayers Rock – Just not quite as red. It dominates the skyline and you can hike to the top OR catch a chairlift (maybe let the kid’s walk?!?). It is a long climb. The local beach is a beauty and has a grassy area with toilets.
The Seaview Inn (see opposite) loves kids and has commanding views. Whilst in town you must sample the fresh seafood straight off the boat, visit the Seaquarium, take the Stanley Seal Cruise, see how life used to be at Highfield, and check out the old fashioned village – complete with Ye Olde Chocolate Shoppe.
The local Tourist Park is a great place to stay as it is right on the beach AND the golf course! You can also walk everywhere from there.
Worth a look! Just a short drive up the road is Smithton and not far from there is the Tarkine Wilderness – Kids will love the slide. Height restrictions apply. www.tarkine.com.au
