Drive or take the train, come for the day or the night Freo has history, food, activities and mostly a character that draws people to it. In a bygone era when passenger ships were the preferred mode of transport for world travellers, Fremantle was the western gateway to Australia. Millions of migrants arrived by ship and many made the area their home.

Fremantle today retains much of its old charm. Many of Fremantle’s old buildings have been painstakingly restored and the West End of town is acclaimed as one of the best examples of a Victorian port streetscape in the world. There is a vibrant atmosphere in ‘Freo’; there is always something happening around the town - whether it be festivals, exhibitions, street performances, markets or concerts.
Did You Know?
The Roundhouse Gaol. This is where the first convicts were placed in holding cells when they got off the boat. The place is heritage listed, and like many heritage buildings in Fremantle, it is reputed to be haunted.

There are endless possibilities, endless fun, endless things to do with your family and friends. Look for dolphins while cruising the waterways, catch a feed from the estuary or have dinner on the foreshore, swim in the inlet or at one of the beautiful beaches. Visit the carnival, grab a coffee, go shopping, visit a gallery or museum. Our beautiful Peel Region also offers a zoo, a wildlife park, horseback riding through natural bushland, and lots of delightful wineries for mum and dad.
28
Beautiful unspoilt beaches, inland waterways and river flats mean the landscape has something for everyone and caters to lots of interests and activities so close to Perth, but Mandurah has a distinctly different feel and is the quintessential seaside town. You can hire a boat and cruise the waterways whilst looking for dolphins or bird life (pelicans abound) or cast a line and catch dinner from the estuary to enjoy later on the foreshore with its great playground and facilities. Swim in the inlet or at one of the beautiful beaches or hire a bike and go for an easy (and flat) ride around the town. There are many attractions including fabulous Peel Zoo or West OZ Wildlife Park (See opposite) nearby and the Visitor’s Centre on the boardwalk can tell you all about them.
Did You Know? The name Mandurah comes from the Aboriginal word “mandjar” which means “meeting place”

- Bunbury/Busselton & Margaret River
Located 190km south of Perth and serviced by a major highway, Bunbury is the gateway to the South West. It is almost surrounded by water and has the calm waters of the Indian Ocean at its doorstep as well as inlets, waterways and canals for fishing, swimming and paddling.
Bunbury/Busselton & Margaret River
Bunbury’s main attraction is its friendly dolphins! They regularly visit Koombana Bay where visitors to the Dolphin Discovery Centre get a chance to interact with them on the beach. The dolphins mostly visit in the morning and are more regular during the warmer months.

THE REGION
The seaside towns of Busselton and Dunsborough are nestled along the wide sandy shores of Geographe Bay, protected from the prevailing winds. The calm beaches of the Bay are perfect for swimming, fishing, snorkelling and diving. Just on the western side of Cape Naturaliste, the beachscape changes completely, with Yallingup and Margaret River being world famous for their excellent surf breaks, sandy beaches and hidden coves.
Bunbury/Busselton & Margaret River
The Heritage Butter Factory and Busselton Museum has ten display rooms packed with photographs, equipment and memorabillia which trace the family, social, civic, commercial and maritime history of Busselton. Everything from agriculture to whaling; from crockery, clocks and cameras to sewing machines, travel and transport is included. Visit us, and discover a time now past.

These are set against a backdrop of rugged cliffs, rolling green hills and native bushland. It is diverse and beautiful, and is full of things for families to do!
Busselton has a history museum but its main claim to fame is its timber jetty that is the longest in the Southern Hemisphere and stretches 1.8km. It has an underwater observatory that provides an opportunity to view the amazing marine life of Geographe Bay’s underwater garden at a depth of 8m! There are swimming and diving platforms, interpretive plaques and for those less athletically inclined, you can board the jetty train to travel the 1.7km to the observatory!
Whale Watching in the Margaret River Area
Each year Humpback and Southern Right Whales make the long journey from Antarctica to the warm pristine waters of the Margaret River region. Flinders Bay in Augusta is the "first port of call" for many whales that come to feed, breed and play from June to September. Whale watching here is very unique experience because it's one of the few places in the world you can observe Southern Right and Humpback whales interacting. From September to December you can watch whales in the north of the Margaret River region in the sheltered Geographe Bay. Endangered Blue whales have also been spotted here.
Along the way to Busselton there is the newly opened “Xscape” which will be an exciting addition to the area, with a myraid of climbing, bouncing and jumping activities, and Countrylife Farm (p.41) is nearby for the “littlies” that provides a great interactive experience. Ngilgi Caves and the lighthouse are nearby to explore.

Perth has an abundance of casual eateries and cafes that are perfect for families. Lots of them have playgrounds and even activities to occupy the kids whilst you enjoy a cuppa or meal. We’ve done our homework and come up with a selection to make sure the next time you go out for a bite to eat or a catch up with friends, that there is something to keep the kids entertained too and the experience will be a lot less painful.
Freo There are plenty of options in South Tce (including Outback Jacks), SALT in Nth Fremantle has Kid’s Club on Friday night (and a playground), Little Creatures has a sandpit and Cicerellos has great Fish and Chips at the Fishing Boat Harbour (with some awesome fish tanks to keep the kids amused). Swan Valley Heaven for sweet tooths with chocolate and nougat factories. Some of the older wineries feature large picnic grounds and many of the vineyards have restaurants and cafes. Mash Brewing offer great options for keeping the kids entertained while you enjoy a locally brewed quality beer or cider.

The entire city of Perth is surrounded by parks and gardens and across the whole state you will find wide open spaces for walking, jogging, cycling, horse riding, picnicking, barbecuing, playing, bird watching, kicking the footy, flying a kite or doing some fishing. Here is a selection of our favourites. Kings Park would have to be one of our nation’s best… and its FREE! Pack a picnic or call in and see Roy at Stickybeaks (see right), and make a day of it. Climb the DNA tower, check out the views from the Walkway, take the littlies to the Ivey Watson Playground, go back to the age of dinosaurs at Synergy Parkland or try the newly referbished Saw Avenue adventure playground. BBQ’s, toilets and pavilions are available. South Perth has several outstanding play areas along its foreshore, including a newly built beach, the fitness trail, bike trail and a covered play area. There is plenty of expanses of manicured grass for picnicking and ball games. The views are awesome!

Beaches
Did You Know? As the name suggests, Mettam’s Pool is a natural pool situated inside a protecting reef. This beach is particularly attractive to elderly and young swimmers due to the calm waters within the pool. Another feature of the beach that makes it attractive to the young is the ocean life around the reef. The calm water combined with the closeness of the reef from the beach, make it the perfect location for children to learn to snorkel.
