After school, on the weekend, for the holidays, in the city, by the lake, in the hills, or at the myriad of parks in and around Canberra there are hundreds of things to do. Historic museums, natural beauty, national sporting teams, hands on learning experiences Canberra is full of surprises! There is really no other place where so much is all so close. Canberra City is known as “Civic” and is situated on the banks of Lake Burley Griffin (named for the architect of the city) and is dotted with interesting places to visit and engage with.
So let’s get exploring – Firstly, lace up the walking shoes and take a hike up Red Hill for spectacular views over the city. At the top, reward yourself with a chai or hot choccie at Little Brother Restaurant where you can enjoy the panoramic views whilst giving your feet a bit of R&R. Bringing together a world-class museum, a shrine and an extensive archive, the Australian War Memorial is a moving and insightful experience for both young and old. Discover the diverse Australian experiences of war and connect with the stories of people and events that shaped Australia. 90 minute guided tours are available at 10 am, 10.15 am, 11 am, 12 pm, 1 pm and 2 pm daily.

The National Gallery of Australia is very welcoming of families and they have a special space for kids called NGA Play. Get up close and personal with some of the world’s most amazing creatures at the National Zoo & Aquarium (see opposite). From lions and tigers and bears to giraffes and penguins and monkeys, the Zoo features a variety of native and exotic animals, as well as the largest inland saltwater tank in Australia. 5. The National Museum of Australia’s KSpace is a game-ified interactive experience geared towards five to 12-year-olds. They’ll love working together to build a time-travel pod before being sent back in time to a significant period of Australia’s past. They’ll have fun, learn some history and collaborate with a team of other kids. 6. Teach kids that money doesn’t grow on trees and see real robots live in action on a trip to the Royal Australian Mint (p.8). The tour is free but you’ll need $3 if you want to print your own coin at the end. 7. Find out what the life of a soldier is like at Australian War Memorial where youngsters can dodge sniper fire in a First World War trench, take control of an Iroquois helicopter and peer through the periscope of a Cold War submarine in the Discovery Zone.

8. Find out about democracy in Australia and explore the heritage spaces and exhibitions housed at the Museum of Old Democracy (p.9) at Old Parliament House. Get creative during the free daily craft sessions in PlayUP (costs a little).

At Canberra Glassworks (p.14) you can watch glass artists at work or make your own piece to take home. 15. Search the stalls and hunt for a bargain, or tasty treats and all sorts of handmade finds at the Old Bus Deport Markets on Sundays. 16. Get the blood pumping with a trek up to Mount Ainslie lookout. It offers an impressive and well-earned view after reaching the top. Start near the Australian War Memorial.
9. Join an expert guide on a tour of both chambers of Parliament House, the Marble Foyer, Great Hall, Members’ Hall and the Parliament art collection. 10. Go on a guided tour of the High Court of Australia. Learn about what type of cases are heard and how they are settled. 11. Relax and take in a free film at the National Sound and Film Archive. Check website for screening details. 12. Get arty at the National Gallery of Australia. They have a LOT of kid’s activities that change regularly.
17. Do the Bridge to Bridge walk. It’s about 5km long and if you time your walk to coincide with lunch you can enjoy the music of the National Carillon which is played from 12.30 to 1.20pm on Wednesdays and Sundays. Otherwise the Carillon chimes its 23 bells on the hour and half hour throughout the day.

18. Take the bikes out and explore the Capital on two wheels. Lake Burley Griffin offers a stack of picturesque routes to choose from and little ones will love feeding the ducks. 19. Get climbing at The National Arboretum’s Pod Playground. It looks like a work of art but features giant acorn cubbies, nest swings, net tunnels and a spiral slide for kids to explore. Grown-ups can admire the spectacular scenery from the safety of firm land.

Tours and activities are run regularly. 25. Rug up, and in the middle of winter, take a toboggan down the slope or build a snowman at Corin Forest. 26. Pack a lunch and hike to Gibraltar Falls, Canberra’s only waterfall. It’s a gentle picturesque walk.
27. Just 25 minutes out of the CBD, Cotter Avenue Reserve has everything you need for a day out. Cook lunch on the barbeque facilities, go for a swim in the Murrumbidgee River and check out the Cotter Dam wall before taking one of the reserve’s many walking trails. 28. Head downhill at speed. Stromlo Forest Park is the ultimate active outdoor circuit – for cycling, mountain biking, running, walking or horse-riding. Bring a picnic for sustenance. 29. The National Arboretum Canberra A massive botanical garden with a focus on trees. The Arboretum is the most renowned of all the Canberra parks and a must visit for enthusiasts. You can visit 94 different types of forest and see lovely sculptures, enjoy the shop and the cafe. They have heaps of kid’s activities too.
John Knight Park John Knight Memorial Park is a large 12-hectare park located on the eastern foreshores of Lake Ginninderra and is accessible from Aikman Drive. Park facilities include picnic areas, barbecue facilities, public toilets, fitness equipment, playgrounds, a disc golf course and a fixed orienteering course. The park has expansive views, water rapids and recreational opportunities for all ages including the Woodlands Fitness Trail. The playground includes a tree house, flying fox and play sculpture. The recently refurbished Snake house has a large timber climbing unit featuring a wave board and nest spinner, a climbing net and a play structure with ramp for access. The play structure also includes other play prompts such as a shop counter with a snake theme and voice tubes for children to speak to each other across the play area.

Boundless Playground in Kings Park, just off Kings Avenue Bridge The fully secured playground has a massive fort, a glider, a maze, giant swings and even water cannons. Ramp access, low swings and loads of sensory features are throughout the playground making it inclusive for all ages and abilities. The playground is not far from the National Carillion so you will be able to time how long you have been at the playground by listening to the chiming bells every quarter of an hour!

The central feature of the playground is the Pods otherwise known as acorns and banksia huts. It’s a multi age playground so your big kids can climb through the acorns in the sky, and your little kids can play in the banksia huts on the ground.

Commonwealth Park and Tunnel Playground Albert St, Parkes This 34.5 ha park is home to interesting sculptures, hidden walks and ponds as well as lots of perfect picnic spots with BBQ facilities available. (It’s also the home of Floriade in Spring.) The “Tunnel Playground” is a like an underground playground, where kids can crawl through stone tunnels and also up and over them.
There are rope tunnels and tube slippery slides connecting all of the acorns as well as port holes for kids to see out of – the views over the surrounding Arboretum are spectacular. If your kids get stuck up in one of the acorns, you need to be slim in the hips to get up there and get them down! Back down on earth little ones will love playing with the musical instruments in the banksia huts and mucking around in the sand pits as well as crawling and climbing all over the intriguing natural sculptures located throughout the playground.

Play Weston Park Weston Park Rd,Yarralumla This park has been a favourite with families for many years. Located on the water, it has a beach, cycle tracks, picnic shelters, BBQs, toilets, a pretty cool playground and a miniature railway. All of the play equipment is spread out so you don’t feel as though you are too crowded. The kids will love playing with the mechanical sand diggers, climbing on the rope tower and yelling through the speaker phones.

Glebe Park Coranderrk St, Civic Located near Canberra’s premier shopping and dining precinct Civic, a visit to the beautiful leafy Glebe Park is a good bribery tool to use on your kids so that they behave themselves whilst you are window shopping in the Canberra Centre!
The park contains loads of green space to run around, a rotunda and a very good playground. The playground has swings, slippery slide, a fort and climbing frames. There are ten gates located throughout the park and they are all named after historic places or people. So, if you have older kids send them off on a little exploration to see who can find them all first.

Play Canberra is the gateway to the Australian Alps and the ski resorts located within. A two hour drive on good, level highway sees you in Jindabyne which is the staging place for most people heading to the slopes. There are plenty of ski hire places in Cooma and Jindabyne to rent your gear from before reaching the mountains. Thredbo, Perisher, Mt Selwyn and Charlotte Pass all have seasons from June until late September with reasonably reliable snowfall.

Less than three hours from Canberra and just over four from Sydney, the Eurobodalla region sits along the unspoilt South Coast of NSW. Eurobodalla, or the “Land of Many Waters”, encompasses the towns of Batemans Bay, Bodalla, Broulee, Mogo, Moruya, Narooma, Tilba and Tuross Head. Natural beauty and wildlife encounters are the region’s biggest draw cards. Narooma Narooma, which means “clear blue water” offers families endless possibilities. Centred around the Wagonga Inlet, the town has amazing views, great beaches and of course the oyster filled lake system. On the northern side of the inlet, the Mill Bay Boardwalk meanders scenically along the water’s edge. Part of the Batemans Marine Park, schools of fish, as well as rays, dolphins and seals are often seen scooting by. Wide enough for walking and cycling, the boardwalk leads to Apex Park, where the nearby clear netted waters at Bar Beach provide the perfect spot for a sheltered swim or snorkel.
The fishing around Narooma is superb and can be as easy as casting a line from the shore. Out of the water, Narooma has a lot on offer for a small town. Narooma Kinema has Art Deco influence and ambience, with the building placed on the National Heritage Register because of its significance to the community.

WORTH A LOOK!
Just off the coast, Montague Island makes a great day trip, with whales, dolphins, flying fish and over 90 species of bird calling the area home throughout the year. The granite lighthouse on the island is almost 140 years old and retains most of its original features. Climbing the original winding stairs provides outstanding 360-degree views and a chance to spot passing whales. For a unique overnight stay, accommodation is offered in both the lighthouse keeper’s, and assistant lighthouse keeper’s cottages. Nearby in Bodalla, the Bodalla Dairy Shed has been fitted out to resemble a classic milk bar. The retro interior is very spacious and you can choose to sit on big tables or in more comfy booths. There is a little spot down the back of the cafe where kids can do some colouring in and their art work adorns the wall. If you coincide your arrival at either 10am or 4pm your little ones can have a chance to bottle feed some bobby calves, which is serious fun for little (and big) city kids!

The other holiday parks have great kids’ programs and activities as well. They are clustered around nearby townships of Burrill Lake and Dolphin Point. Surrounded by natural bushland, their unspoilt beauty provides excellent fishing spots and safe boating, sailing and windsurfing. To the north of Ulladulla is the wonderful seaside escape of Mollymook, with its beautiful beach, ideal waves for bodysurfers and boardriders, pretty picnic spots and delicious seafood. Spot dolphins playing in the sparkling waters and from headlands watch majestic whales migrating along the NSW South Coast.
A large natural rock pool is at the southern end near the Mollymook headland.The tidal pool is called Bogey Hole and great for swimming and snorkelling. Nearby, the charming township of Milton, with its arts and craft stores, excellent cafes and restaurants, unique designer shops and quality accommodation has long been a favourite with visitors and provides a great base for exploring the local attractions. The character of Milton is enhanced by its many historic buildings, to the extent that the entire town has now been classified by the National Trust as an historic village.

The Jervis Bay area feels like a magical wonderland. If you’re looking for a relaxing beach holiday with lots of outdoor time, this may be the ideal seaside escape! You’ll love the crystal-blue waters, white sandy beaches and the plethora of water sports activities. Huskisson is at the centre of it all and is a beautiful town with a rich shipbuilding heritage. Huskisson sits on the shores of the spectacular Jervis Bay Marine Park where the crystal blue waters are home to abundant marine life, including fur seals, little penguins, weedy sea dragon’s, sea eagles, garnets and over 1000 resident bottlenose dolphins! The star attraction though is the humpback whale. Their acrobatic antics are an awe-inspiring thrill to watch. They make their passage up the east coast to mate in the warm tropical waters of Queensland, and Jervis Bay is a regular haunt of theirs on the journey to and from.
A mini industry of whale watching tours has developed to site these great mammals, which can be reliably sited during June and July and again in the September to November season. Jervis Bay Wild and Dolphin Cruises offers dolphin and whale watching cruises all year round. Jervis Bay is a mecca for water sports enthusiasts. You can take tours to go on an underwater adventure to the best diving and snorkelling spots in the marine park or paddle a kayak to get amongst the playful dolphins. Both Huskisson and Collingwood beaches are so good for children, easy to get too and with a very shallow slope. And the views!
WORTH A LOOK! The lighthouse at Point Perpendicular is a wellknown South Coast landmark but the view from the lookout is enough reason to visit on its own. Early risers can watch an extraordinary sunrise from the lighthouse grounds.

Rent a bike and explore natural attractions along the foreshore on the many bike paths. Golfers will marvel at the views from Vincentia Golf Club, which also has a restaurant.
Beautiful beaches stretch along the 6.5 km Vincentia foreshore, to Huskisson in the north and Hyams Beach in the south. A great way to experience the splendour is on the White Sands Walk, which begins at the boardwalk on Greenfield Beach. This memorable trail takes you to Hyams Beach. The return route is via the Scribbly Gum Track. Greenfield Beach is lined by old growth forest and a lovely park and picnic area. Blenheim Beach is a great snorkelling spot and there’s a nearby reserve with a playground and a picnic ground. Orion Beach is one of Vincentia’s best-kept secrets.
WORTH A LOOK! Honeymoon Bay is a fabulous beach for a big day out. It’s on the opposite side of the bay to Vincentia and Huskisson, the drive takes 40 minutes or so. The horseshoe shaped bay is small and sweet with lovely beach to play on, clear waters and rocks to explore. Then drive over to the delightful village of Currarong for fish and chips. The complex includes a large recreation area with native gardens, a mangrove boardwalk, fish feeding pond, boathouse and historic buildings. The historic Huskisson Pictures is a great place to relax, unwind and hide out for a couple of hours. The charming building was constructed in 1913 and has been screening movies since the 1950s. The Bay and Basin Leisure Centre has an indoor waterslide perfect for kids. Husky Sports Club (see below) has a great mini golf course and consider themselves the “Family Club”.
Huskisson
The Jervis Maritime Museum (p.36) features a world renowned collection of maritime artefacts and navigational and surveying instruments. The museum is home to the historic Lady Denman ferry, a timber ferry built in Huskisson that served on Sydney Harbour from 1911 to 1979 and other historic vessels.

On the banks of beautiful Shoalhaven River, Nowra is a delightful town on the NSW South Coast with intriguing museums, fascinating galleries and enchanting river cruises. You’ll enjoy delicious food and wine experiences and the Shoalhaven region’s main town is close to gorgeous beaches, too. It is the commercial hub of the Shoalhaven, taking its name from the Aboriginal word meaning “camping place” or “black cockatoo”. For breathtaking panoramas of the river and beyond, stroll along Ben’s Walk and stop at Hanging Rock. The wide river is popular for fishing, boating, kayaking and river cruises.
There are some good local bushwalks within the Nowra district, notably Ben’s Walk which is an easy, shady and well-graded riverbank walk winding beside the Shoalhaven River, affording excellent views of the local district.
A short drive from the city centre is the Navy’s Fleet Air Arm Museum – the largest aviation museum in Australia.
WORTH A LOOK! The streets of Nowra showcase a bunch of epic street art murals and the tounge-in-cheek Toilet Mural Trail features some stunning paintings that have brightened up local parks such as Currarong foreshore.

At the mouth of the beautiful Shoalhaven River, Shoalhaven Heads is perfect for a beach holiday and a great base for exploring colonial heritage and acclaimed wineries. A short drive southeast of Berry and two hours from Sydney, you’ll be delighted with the wonderful things to do, see and taste in this charming seaside town. Seven Mile Beach is a stunning attraction. Fine white sands curve from the heads near the river entrance north through Seven Mile Beach National Park to Gerroa. The southern stretch, adjacent to the town, is patrolled by the Shoalhaven Heads Surf Life Saving Club during the warmer months.
HANDY HINT The Shoalhaven is a beach lover’s paradise and we urge you to take the family and tick some off your bucket list. Log onto the 100 Beach Challenge and spend the day soaking up the sun, sand and surf. Moona Moona Creek Lagoon and Honeymoon Bay are excellent swimming spots thanks to the calm and quiet waters. Pack a hamper filled with delicious local produce and set up a picnic down at Bawley Point or Narrawallee. If you’re planning an adventure in Booderee National Park, a long time family favourite is secluded Green Patch Beach which boasts beautiful white sand. You can spot whales migrating along the NSW South Coast from May to November. The Shoalhaven River estuary is also part of Australia’s Oyster Coast.
You’ll find plenty of places to stay. Enjoy swimming, surfing, fishing and relaxing on the gorgeous beach. Bushwalking in the national park and picnics are popular too.

Kiama is the quintessential beachside town that the NSW coast is famous for. It has several great beaches and its park, main shopping centre and train station are all close together and easily covered on foot. Filling in a day is easy with so much on offer for families. No visit is ever complete to Kiama without visiting The Kiama Blowhole. The natural rock formation spouts seawater 20 metres or more into the air. Spectators are drenched if they go too close to the Blowhole! The area is floodlit until 1am, offering an amazing night-time attraction. If the water spout is placid, drive 10mins south to the Little Blowhole which relies on the prevailing northeast seas. The nearby lighthouse has breathtaking views and plaques with historical stories that tell the history of the area. The Pilot’s Cottage Museum is located there too. Step back in time and discover Kiama’s maritime history.
WORTH A LOOK! When looking for somewhere to eat with the kids in Kiama, head to the Kiama Leagues Club right across the road from the Town Park in Terralong St.
The Kiama Coast Walk is the best way to soak up the stunning scenery. The path is scooter, skateboard and bike friendly. For a safe splash in the shallows, head to the Gerringong rock pools or Gerroa Beach. Explore the spectacular Cathedral Rocks where years of erosion have turned these volcanic rocks into a well-known natural landmark.The safest time to visit is low tide when the swell is small.You can wander along the sand, weaving in and out of the rock formations. Kids who want to hang 10 can hire a surf board from a local board store and head to Werri, Gerringong or Seven Mile Beach.These wide, flat beaches offer rolling sets and long rides, perfect for beginners.

DID YOU KNOW Every Wednesday afternoon, a bell rings at Kiama’s Surf Beach. Relax, it’s not a shark alarm. It marks the beginning of trading at the Kiama Farmers Market. The oceanfront location offers a stunning backdrop for your grocery haul. You’ll find fresh produce, local meat & seafood, gelato, cakes & baked goodies. There’s also a great range of street food to wander along with or sit down and enjoy by the water. Just a short drive out of Kiama, set amongst rolling green hills is Jamberoo Action Park (see opposite). It boasts The Perfect Storm, the tallest, longest, fastest water ride ever built! It has lots of shade, plenty of different rides to accommodate all ages and the luxury of allowing you to bring your own food and drink. Open between October and April, it pays to buy your tickets early in the peak of summer to avoid missing out.

Further inland, Minnamurra Rainforest is a great place for bushwalking, wildlife spotting and chasing waterfalls. Winding trails and swinging suspension bridges make up the 1.6 kilometre loop boardwalk.

Featuring a range of great animal encounters, a visit to Symbio is perfect for animal lovers of all ages. There is certainly no shortage of playgrounds in Wollongong. A favourite of ours is Stuart Park, a short walk from the Novotel Wollongong Northbeach. The playground features a 8.6 metre high SkyTower, complete with three giant slides coming off it. It also boasts two flying foxes and a beginner’s cycle track. There are also some great playgrounds in Bulli, a short 15 minute drive from North Beach.

Surfers, boating lovers and dog owners flock to this under-the-radar beach, located a short coastal drive north of Wollongong. At its most beautiful at low tide, the highlight is the endless figure-of-eight shaped pools along the rocky shoreline. 13. Take the kids to Nan Tien Temple, the largest Buddhist Temple in the southern hemisphere. Nan Tien is a place of tranquillity that offers a spiritual experience as well as culture, temple tours and peaceful gardens.
14. Ride the trails around Lake Illawarra and take in the scenery, grab some fish and chips or have a swim. With a dedicated bike track from Oak Flats to Shellharbour Village there are plenty of places to start and stop along the way. Pelican Park and Reddall Reserve Park are a handy stop along the way to play between rides. 15. Explore Helensburgh Tunnel. The tunnel was constructed in the 1800s. The tunnel is sandwiched between two rock cliffs and is home to glow worms and, according to some, ghosts! 16. Visit the Illawarra Light Railway & Museum. The Museum is traditionally open on the second Saturday and the fourth Saturday of the month. The museum is a great place for families to have a day out with train rides and a museum to explore.

BATEMANS BAY
There are numerous holiday parks situated on the river, near the beach and in the nearby bushland. Our favourites are Clyde River (p.30) around in the peaceful Batehaven for its proximity to swimming, fishing or sailing within metres of your accommodation. The Lakesea Park (p.30) is between the lake and the sea and only 15 mins from Batemans.
NAROOMA
The Easts Big 4 (p.29) is located on the river in the “flats” part of town. It is smack bang right in the action with easy access to river, beach and lakes. The Novotel (p.55) is right on the beach, has family friendly rooms, have great kids’ activities and actually want the little tackers to be there!! They have amazing packages and Kids Eat & Stay Free. Wollongong Surf Leisure Resort (p.56) is just out of town but has an indoor heated pool, playgrounds, tennis nearby playing fields and (as the name suggests) is located right on the sand. Canberra Balloon Spectacular at Enlighten Festival Wake up to the view of hot air balloons floating across the city during the Canberra Balloon Spectacular.This mesmerising view is best appreciated from the lawns of Old Parliament House.
