Out & About
Melbourne is the capital of Victoria, and home to nearly 4 million people. Many of the citizens of Melbourne live in the suburbs to east and south of the Yarra River, sprawled around Port Phillip Bay and extending as far east as Mt Dandenong. The North and the West are catching up fast though!
Photo Courtesy of Visions of Victoria
Melbourne was founded on the Yarra River in 1835 after an abortive bid in 1803 to establish a settlement inside the Port Phillip Bay heads near Sorrento. Today, Melbourne is one of the great multicultural cities of the world.
Restaurants, galleries and performing arts centres are right across the city, giving it a refined and cultured reputation.
Of course, Melbourne is also regarded as the Sporting Capital of the World, having previously hosted the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, and currently is home to world class events like the Australian Tennis Open played in January and the Australian Formula one Grand Prix!

Playgrounds, grassy hills, beaches and skate parks – there’s plenty of wide open spaces in gorgeous locations where kids can learn to ride, hone their skills or just burn off some of that endless energy. Younger siblings and older kids can all agree on this one.

Queenscliff Foreshore. Big enough lawns to kick the footy or strike up a cricket match, a great playground, and nearby Harry’s Kiosk has great food, coffee, places to sit outside and an awesome selection of retro lawn games (totem tennis, anyone?). Barwon Heads River Beach. The park seamlessly merges with the sandy river beach, a great spot to splash after working out on the play equipment and not too far to wander to find sustenance – from sit down meals to fish and chips. Barwon River. Springing from the Otways and running through Geelong, it’s long been a local favourite. There are playgrounds aplenty as the river winds through suburban Geelong, the best one is at Barwon Valley in Belmont. Heaps of cool things to play on, plus BBQs, picnic benches, and gorgeous walking / riding / scooting tracks in both directions. Fun! The You Yangs. Take a hike, a picnic or BBQ at the You Yangs Regional Park, Geelong’s Northern mountain range. The views from Flinders Peak extend for miles in every direction and there’s loads of wildlife to spot. The coast around Warrnambool and down to Cape Otway is known as the Shipwreck Coast, due to the large number of water vessels that ran aground in the 1800s and early 1900s due to ferocious weather conditions and the rocky coastline. Warrnambool is the end of the road and it is jam packed with things for families to do. Warrnambool enjoys a good variety of coastal attractions. The main swimming beach is the patrolled sandy expanse of Bathing Beach, situated at the top of Lady Bay. Behind the beach is the 20 hectare Lake Pertobe Adventure Park with its playgrounds, fitness equipment, BBQs, a kiosk, and a large lake with footbridges, islands and paddle boats.

Therefore a great deal of underground mining had to take place. Today there are still tunnels deep underground that criss-cross the whole area. You can spend some time exploring the life of a gold miner at the Central Deborah Gold Mine. You can even take a tour deep underground!

Yarrawonga
Set in quiet semi-rural area, come and enjoy the amazing serenity and peace, with the beautiful Murray River and forest as our neighbours.

Out & About
- Yarrawonga Kick back on the banks at dusk and take in a spectacular sunset over the water. The twisted trunks of the submerged red gum forest make for a striking scene. Alternatively, cast a line for the local Murray cod and golden perch, take a cruise across the lake, or try your hand at waterskiing. Mulwala has three excellent clubs. The Ski Club runs ski shows over summer that will entertain and thrill the kids with the waterskiing, wakeboarding and jet skiing skills that are on display - it is a long time Mulwala tradition. The Golf Club has a movie theatre showing all the latest releases.

Play Melbourne has an amazing selection of places to take the family for some fun in the outdoors (and indoors). There are so many local parks and beach areas nearby, as well as having a number of Regional Parks and top notch nature reserves right on our doorstep. Below you will find a selection of our favourites where you can run, walk, play, swim, ride, BBQ or picnic.
Royal Botanic Gardens The Botanic Gardens are simply stunning and a joy to explore. Kids will love the Ornamental Lake where you can take them on a punt cruise around the bays and islands. Highlights include the stunning Guilfoyle’s Volcano and the Tropical Glasshouse. However, what kids will dig most will be the Ian Potter Foundation’s Children’s Garden. The water features in particular are great in summer. Entry is free!
Bundoora Park Check out Coopers Settlement (p.25) and life in the olden days. Visit the farm, pat a goat or a FRONT guinea pig or bottle feed a lamb.

Watch Most cities in the world have 1 maybe 2, 3 or 4 professional sporting teams but Melbourne has 21! If it can be thrown, hit, kicked or caught or it can be sailed, surfed or driven, then we WILL turn up to watch it and support it. Melbourne is sports mad and is proud to wear the unoffical “Sports Capital of the World” title. We love to turn up in our thousands to our great sporting venues like the “G”, Rod Laver Area, Etihad Stadium or Aami Park to watch world class sports people and events on an almost weekly basis. Here is a guide to the various sports for the next 12 months, Get off the couch and get out there!!!

JOHN HASTINGS - CAPTAIN
Nickname: Beamsy Playing number: 26 Height: 162cm Birthday: November 6, 1984 Born: Launceston, Batting style: Right-hand Bowling style: Right-arm leg break, googly Favourite superhero: Astro Boy Favourite AFL team: Geelong
Playing number: 11 Nickname: The Duke Height: 198cm Birthday: November 4, 1985 Batting style: Right-hand Bowling style: Right-arm fast-medium Favourite superhero: Batman Favourite AFL team: Hawthorn
Kristen Beams is the new captain of the Melbourne Stars for WBBL|03 and will be keen to help drive their success with her experienced leg-spin bowling and astute leadership. The energetic right-armer made a late start to last season’s competition due to a finger injury, but returned to make an excellent contribution. Taking 11 wickets in only seven matches, Beams’ accurate and impactful bowling proved invaluable to the Stars. Her career economy rate for the Stars leading into this season was an impressive 5.27 runs per over.Making her international debut in 2014, Beams has represented Australia in all forms of the game, most recently in the home Ashes series against England in 2017.
Like his WBBL counterpart, John Hastings has been named as a new captain for the Melbourne Stars’ for this season. A clever bowler who uses his height, changes of pace and a reliable yorker, Hastings has proven to be a reliable performer, especially in the finals overs of an innings. As a hard-hitting lower order batsman, the burly right-hander can contribute valuable runs and find the fence when required. After enduring numerous injuries throughout his career, Hastings announced his retirement from other forms of cricket in October. He represented Australia in each and has also been a sought-after T20 player in both India and the UK. Known as ‘The Duke’, Hastings is a qualified teacher and loves to go fishing in his time away from cricket.
