Although you are in a city, you are still in the Australian Outback. In Darwin you can enjoy all the benefits of a city; museums, cultural events, shopping malls and fine dining, but you will also see many four wheel drives on the roads, and come across quirky Outback characters. The people are genuine, open and friendly.

Darwin is the ‘capital’ of northern Australia and is closer to Jakarta than it is to Canberra and closer to Singapore than it is to Melbourne, so it’s no surprise that Darwin looks outward to Asia as much as it looks inland to the rest of Australia.

The warm, tropical climate of Darwin and its surrounding area is characterised by two distinct seasons with tell-tale titles: the ‘Wet’and the ‘Dry’. The Wet season, spanning from November until April, is characterised by high levels of humidity followed by monsoonal rains and storms. The ‘Dry’ season, from May until October, is characterised by warm, dry sunny days and cool nights.

On 19 February 1942 an unprepared Darwin was devastated by Japanese bombing. Despite 58 further raids, Darwin rose to the challenge, becoming a major forward base for the Pacific Campaign.

Present day Darwin was founded in 1869. The harbour had been discovered back in 1839 by John Lort Stokes aboard the Beagle, who named it Port Darwin after former shipmate, Charles Darwin.

Darwin was named after Charles Darwin, known as the ‘Father of Evolution’ and famed botanist. His friend was John Lort Stokes (after whom the wharf is named) who named the city in his honour.

Darwin -

- Darwin Check out Bicentennial Park at The Esplanade, Jingili Water Gardens and East Point Reserve which includes Lake Alexander and is probably the most well known reserve maintained by the City of Darwin. It is close to the city, covers over 200 hectares and is rich in wartime history and native flora.

In Darwin you can take things as fast or as slow as you like. From bushwalks and suburban markets to being submerged with saltwater crocodiles, it really is your choice in this tropical city.

Darwin also has many playgrounds throughout the city which are free to access and provide varying levels of activity challenge. The one at Lake Alexander is a beauty and the other major suburban playgrounds are located in Anula, Jingili and Leanyer.

The City of Darwin provides a wide range of recreational facilities where families, young people and children can all enjoy Darwin’s outdoor lifestyle. Darwin’s parks are excellent venues for everything from family get-togethers and festivals to open air meetings, functions and other corporate and community events.

10

Crocs in the City!

Home to the Cage of Death

Of course, Darwin’s traditional owners, the Larrakia people, also bring their own history, culture, beliefs and customs to the mix. The end result is an ever changing, ever evolving community that accepts and welcomes everyone.

Darwin has developed into a thriving, vibrant place, renowned for its colourful characters and large variety of cafes, restaurants, pubs and licenced sporting clubs. It is also the entry point to some of the world’s greatest natural and cultural attractions, that are located within a two to three hour drive from the capital. They can be experienced year round, although the ‘wet’ means they are inaccessible at times.

Darwin literally is a HOT destination. While Aussies in southern parts of Australia are all rugged up on the couch under a blanket in their winter woolies, those in Darwin are basking in the warmth of the sun. It’s the perfect winter getaway!

Darwin has an amazing selection of places to take the family for some fun in the outdoors (and indoors).

The Esplanade Beautiful Bicentennial Park runs the length of The Esplanade and a walking/cycling track goes from Doctors Gully in the north to the Wharf Precinct in the south. There is a children’s playground halfway along the park, an eagle’s nest lookout at the northern end and a Cenotaph honouring our war heroes. Sunsets from here are spectacular.

Eat

Darwin’s Rural Area Stokes Hill Wharf has an amazing food hall that is open nightly. You can sit al fresco or under cover and the kids will love the huge batfish (and sometimes a shark) being attracted by the lights and swimming around the wharf.

There are an abundance of casual eateries and “food experiences” that are perfect for a relaxed family meal.

Crustaceans (see below) offers affordable family seafood meals in a superb setting on the end of the wharf.

The cuisine is heavily influenced by the proximity to Asia, with lots of different spices and produce used in the cooking. What is the local speciality? Seafood of course, and in particular, Barra! This beautiful eating fish is everywhere. Grilled, fried, as a burger, in a curry, with noodles or rice, even the kids will love the taste. You’ll also find other authentic NT cuisine like mud crabs, buffalo, kangaroo, camel and crocodile. You will see these on the menu wherever you go, so give ‘em a try! Where to Eat? Mitchell Street in the city has many outlets for a quick lunch or a sit down dinner. There are sandwich shops, noodles, Italian, fish and chips and Thai. There are several pubs as well. For the best barra in town, try the Barra Bar.

Darwin’s Rural Area is comprised of Howard Springs, Humpty Doo, Berry Springs and Noonamah. It covers the area beyond Palmerston and is situated in and around the Stuart and Arnhem Highways.

The Trailer Boat Club has a playground, swimming pool, beach and soft sand for the kids to play on.

Eating like a Local! Picnics and outdoor eating are a way of life in Darwin, and the free gas barbecues in the city’s foreshore parks are well-used, especially at sunset. Pick up some fresh barramundi fillets from the Fish Markets at Frances Bay, fill your picnic hamper head for Lake Alexander or Nightcliff, near the pier.

Darwin’s Rural Area

The most popular attraction however is the Litchfield National Park.Today more than 250,000 people each year make the journey to the Park where they inspect the sandstone pillars of the Lost

City; swim in the spring-fed streams; admire the waterfalls; picnic beside the sublime swimming holes; and inspect the magnetic termite mounds which point north-south to minimise heat retention. Buley Rockhole is a series of waterfalls and rock holes suitable for swimming and Florence Falls are a spectacular double waterfall tumbling into a swimming hole. An easy grade walking track with wheelchair access leads from the main car park to a lookout with panoramic views of the creek and the pool below. A steep track and staircase (160 steps) leads down to the pool at the base of the falls. It is worth the hike! Wangi Falls are Litchfield’s most visited attraction. The Falls are beautiful; flow all the time; and tumble into a large swimming hole which is usually warm and pleasant. There is a 3.2 km (round trip) walking trail through rainforest to the top of the falls. There is a large picnic area and kiosk where the ambience is that of a tropical paradise. The water is beautifully clear.

The five largest communities within the Council are Pine Creek, Daly River (Nauiyu), Timber Creek, Yarralin and Kalkaringi and there are several smaller communities such as Daguragu, Bulla, Amanbidji, Pigeon Hole and Kybrook Farm as well as outstations, pastoral properties and road houses. Travel the Victoria Highway towards WA through the beautiful Judbarra National Park with stunning views of the escarpments and rock formations.

Out & About

The Victoria Daly Regional Council welcomes you to explore the region’s unique landscapes and the rich history and culture that the ‘Top End’ is so renowned for. There is plenty of opportunity for four wheel driving through the rugged country of Judbarra and Keep River National Park or visit an art centre in one of the communities and admire locally handmade, high quality arts and crafts. Visit Karungkarni Art Centre in Kalkaringi to meet the artists, admire their vibrant art and discover Gurindji history. The Art Centre is proudly owned and operated by the artists of Kalkaringi and Daguragu communities.

Each August, the Freedom Day Festival commemorates the Wave Hill Walk Off of 1966, a stand taken by Gurindji people living on Wave Hill Cattle Station, which forced Aboriginal land rights onto the national political agenda. Their battle ended when Gurindji leader Vincent Lingiari accepted a pastoral lease over traditional country from Prime Minister Gough Whitlam during a special ‘handback’ ceremony in 1975.

Out & About

Must-dos in the Roper Gulf Region •

48

Mataranka, the centre of the Never Never, is 100 kilometres south-east of Katherine on the Stuart Highway. The small, friendly town is famous for its thermal pools. The sparkling limestone aquifer water, which is consistently 34 degrees, refreshes the swimming pools in beautiful tropical settings.

• • • • • • •

This is an absolute delight any time, but especially on a hot day. The Jurmurark (12 Mile) camping ground, 17km from Mataranka, provides a tranquil bushland environment close to the Roper River and Korowan (Mataranka Falls). Three main road routes pass through the Roper Gulf region, and many of the best tourist sites in the region are easily accessible for travellers using these largely unsealed roads, and the three east-west roads form the boundaries of distinct sub-regions. The “top road”, the Central Arnhem Highway, is one of the truly great road journeys of the NT, and the only road to Nhulunbuy. This four-wheel drive road passes through sandstone-capped hills, rolling grassland, dry forests, remnant rainforests and rivers, and through small Indigenous communities. This is not a road for the feint hearted, or suitable for conventional caravans.

Handy Hint Be Crocwise - Saltwater crocodiles are common in waterways across the region. Always follow the instructions of warning signs and speak to locals and Parks and Wildlife Commission NT rangers before dipping your toes.

LetsGoKids Northern Territory 2017

The highway links Katherine and the communities of Manyallaluk, Barunga, Beswick and Bulman with the coastal town of Nhulunbuy, and the almost1000km Savannah Way, the grand tourist route between Cairns and Broome. With a stretch of your imagination from the Jurassic Park lookout, on top of the range of hills 50km beyond Beswick, you can almost see dinosaurs grazing below. Well, maybe not, but you will see a buffalo or two.

A trip from Darwin to Katherine and Mataranka is an easy one-day drive.

The “middle road”, the Roper Highway, links the Gulf Coast town of Numbulwar and the Roper River town of Ngukurr with the Stuart Highway, near Mataranka. The growth towns are at the end

LetsGoKids Northern Territory 2017

of the unsealed road, but the completion of new bridges spanning the Roper and Wilton Rivers in 2017 will open up these towns and the greater region. From the intersection at Roper Bar, you can travel to Borroloola along the unsealed Nathan River Road through Limmen National Park to meet the Carpentaria Highway near Borroloola. Borroloola is renowned for its fishing and boating, a short holiday on a houseboat, or a charter trip to Centre Island. Don’t forget to try the local mud crab. Forty kilometres east is the well-known fishing village of King Ash Bay and the nearby Bing Bong Bay loading facility for the McArthur River Mine. The “bottom road”, the Carpentaria Highway, links the Stuart Highway, near Daly Waters, with Borroloola and Cape Crawford, and the roads to the Gulf of Carpentaria. The region’s modern history is rich in early exploration - the Overland Telegraph, railways, commercial aviation, mining and World War II. The human history is over 40,000 years old and Indigenous culture remains strong in all communities.

Roper Gulf

Roper Gulf

Within the region there are majestic rivers, over 700 kilometres of untouched coast and islands, sweeping savannah plains and lines of sandstone cliffs, mesas and hills that offer a breathtaking look at ancient landscapes.

The Roper Gulf region is the heart of the Top End and Gulf Savannah. It covers an area from the southern border of Kakadu National Park to the northern edge of the Barkly Tablelands, and from the Gulf of Carpentaria and Northern Territory/Queensland border to the Stuart Highway. Put simply, this spectacularly diverse region covers about the same land area as the entire state of Victoria.

- Roper Gulf

Whether you want a once-in-a-lifetime holiday for the kids, a unique landscape, the best fishing and birdwatching the NT has to offer, an amazing night under the stars or a chance to learn more about a culture tens of thousands of years old, the Roper Gulf region has it all. For more information, go to www.ropergulf.nt.gov.au.

of the first Europeans. In fact, archaeological evidence suggests that the area has been occupied for possibly 30,000 years. This makes Alice Springs one of the world’s oldest, continuously inhabited places.

It is the town that everybody associates with “The Outback,” and it is a long way ‘outback’! It is basically smack bang right in the middle of our vast country and1500km from any capital city. It is almost equidistant from both Adelaide in the south and Darwin in the north.

The town was named after Lady Alice Todd, wife of Sir Charles Todd, a British astronomer, meteorologist and electrical engineer.

The Roper Gulf region is remote, but its small towns are welcoming, and the unique environments and links to the distant and recent past make it an exciting and rewarding place to visit.

Stunning landscapes, remote communities, and a unique pioneering history create a diverse and exhilarating destination to explore. A thriving, spirited outback centre, Alice Springs is as famous for the personality of its locals and contemporary and traditional art as the natural wonders, including the stunning Larapinta Trail and the MacDonnell Ranges, which surround it.

Did You Know?

The central Australian desert around Alice Springs was the home of the Arrernte Aboriginal people for thousands of years prior to the arrival

The Henley-on-Todd Regatta is a “boat” race held annually in the typically dry sandy bed of the Todd River. Every year around September, the town holds a mock regatta, which locals and tourists attend, and the celebration takes all day. It is the only dry river regatta in the world!

The heart of Australia - year round blue skies, stunning landscapes and a vibrant, diverse community - That’s Alice Springs!

Roper Gulf

The feast of Indigenous culture, music and sporting festivals held in the dry season, like the iconic Barunga Festival, held annually on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, are an experience you will never forget. Allow your imagination to step back to another time by visiting the old Maranboy tin mine, the Elsey cemetery or the Elsey homestead, built for the filming of We of the Never Never. Local museums at Mataranka, Borroloola and Larrimah are must-visit destinations. The historic Daly Waters area has a pub that showcases some of the characters of the region and Australia’s first international airport. Many marked World War II sites bring to life the wartime history of the NT. Please be aware that permits are required to travel on some roads in the Roper Gulf region located on Aboriginal land. The Northern Land Council is responsible for administering the permit system for traditional owners in the Top End. For more information about obtaining a permit to explore the region, go to www.nlc.org.au.

The Museum of Central Australia contains a Natural History collection and recalls the days of “megafauna” when hippo-sized wombats and 3 metre/10 feet tall flightless birds roamed the land. Among the geological displays are meteorite fragments and fossils.

Anzac Hill is the place to take spectacular sunrise and sunset photos of the MacDonnell Ranges. Located at the northern end of Bath Street, right in the centre of town, it’s a short climb up a few steps, and then you’re at the top. This prominent hill is THE place to get your best happy snaps of Alice Springs and to take a good look around the town, (and see that it’s really a lot bigger than most people imagine it is). This ruggedly beautiful town is shaped by its mythical landscapes, vibrant Aboriginal culture and tough pioneering past. It is the home of The Royal Flying Doctor Service, The School of the Air (p.51) and the Overland Telegraph Station.

Out & About

Alice Springs Desert Park located just 15km from the center of town is where you can see hundreds of central Australian species of plants and animals as you walk through the trails of the Desert Rivers, Sand Country, and Woodland habitat. It’s an excellent way to learn about the region’s environment. The Royal Flying Doctor Service were the first aeromedical organization in the world and patrol the outback to provide emergency medical care to the region’s remote communities. Nearby, Simpsons Gap sports a permanent pool and rock wallabies that live in the gap’s rocky ridges. Standley Chasm lights up in fiery colours reflected by the sun at midday. Picturesque swimming holes offer refreshing relief on one of those scorching days that Alice is famous for.

At the Overland Telegraph Station you can look through the beautifully restored historic Telegraph Station buildings, learn about the tough pioneers and the Aboriginal people who helped them establish the town. This is where the town of Alice Springs started. It is also the place where the real Alice ‘Spring’ is located.
