Of course Melbourne is also regarded as the Sporting Capital of the World, having previously hosted the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, and currently is home to world class events in the Australian Tennis Open played in January and the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix!
From the city to the bay, to the nearby hills or The Peninsula, from the nearby ski fields to the mighty Murray River - There is so much space to run, play, swim, ski, ride, boat or picnic in our state!
So much of Melbourne (and Victoria) is set up for families and we’ve gone and found the activities and the events, organised some special deals at some of the state’s favourite destinations and discovered a few places you didn’t know about.
So, get off the couch, ring a friend, grab the kids, take advantage of our vouchers and....................... just get out there and DO IT!
DID YOU KNOW Melbourne has the largest tram network in the world, beating the Europeans and Americans with a dozen trams rocketing at 15kph over 200 kilometres of track, pausing at almost 2000 stops.

Times have changed and the district is developing rapidly, but there’s still an exciting blend of both worlds; one where you have open spaces and nature to explore and another that offers culture, food, shopping and all the other amenities we love to surround us.

This region located to the east of Melbourne, can be divided into two separate areas the Dandenong Ranges, where Melbourne's leafy eastern suburbs meet the mountains and forests, and the Yarra Valley, Victoria's oldest wine region.
The Yarra Valley features over 80 vineyards set in picturesque rolling hills mainly around Lilydale, Coldstream, Yarra Glen, Healesville and Seville.
The Dandenong Ranges are close, approximately one hour from central Melbourne and have a wide range of natural, adventure based, cultural and recreational family activities. Get an unrivalled view of Melbourne’s skyline from Sky High Mt Dandenong Observatory and Maze in Mount Dandenong (p.25). Successfully pass through the maze and become a SkyHigh maze master, find the Australiana Tree and Percy Possum’s House, before sitting on the Giants Chair.
Take a tractor tour or try one or more of the 450 varieties of fruit at Rayner’s Orchard.
WORTH A LOOK William Ricketts Sanctuary in Mount Dandenong covers four acres of beautiful fern gully land with 92 ceramic sculptures of Aboriginal figures set among rocks, fern trees and Mountain Ash.

Learning Disguised as Fun
If you don’t tell them it’s educational, they’ll never know. It’s learning disguised as fun and there are lots of ways to get an A in Geelong and The Bellarine. The Geelong Library and Heritage Centre is six levels of brilliance. Outside, the glass-panelled dome building looks like a shiny Death Star. Inside, there’s a whole level for kids that include big squishy cushions to curl up with a book in, quiet games and toys and tech section where Minecraft is frequently played on a giant screen on the wall. Next door, the Geelong Gallery has a craftily engaging children’s program for all young people and interpretation of exhibitions designed for kids.
Queenscliff is surrounded on three sides by water, giving the town large stretches of coastline, consisting of a combination of sandy beaches, rocky outcrops, cliffs and historic piers. At Shortlands Bluff is the Queenscliff Lighthouse which was built in 1862 and includes a lookout near the base. Further north along the coast is the Black Lighthouse, unique in Australia, having been constructed from bluestone.
Geelong & The Bellarine
Fort Queenscliff has preserved a rich military history on site and tours describe local events and finish with kids dressing up in uniform. The Maritime Museum gives an insight into the history and events of the waters around town. Walking tours are available from the Visitor Information Centre to learn more about the history of this spot.
48
At the National Wool Museum, hands-on activities and a clever schedule of temporary exhibitions (recently LEGO and a mini dinosaur) keep kids entertained and challenged.
The holiday town of Barwon Heads is located on the southern coast of the Bellarine Peninsula and separated by the Barwon River from its twin coastal town of Ocean Grove.

Nearby, the Otway Fly Treetop Adventures (p.50) offer a whole host of experiences with the two core activities being the Treetop Walk and the Zip Line Eco Tour. The Treetop Walk is a 1 hour rainforest walk experience that is approx 2km in total and features a 600m long and 30m high steel structured treetop canopy walkway that takes you right into the treetops.
The coastline around the Port Campbell area consists of steep, rocky cliffs with pristine sandy white beaches in bays at the base of many of these cliffs.
DID YOU KNOW Warrnambool is home to the Logans Beach Whale Nursery, where for hundreds of years Southern Right Whales have returned to calve. From June - September.
Located right in the town centre is Port Campbell Bay which is an inlet of water surrounded by the Port Campbell National Park and it includes an attractive foreshore area, a calm sandy beach swimming area, and a jetty. For spectacular views across the bay, along the coast and over the town itself, take the Discovery Walk. The coast around Warrnambool and down to Cape Otway is known as the Shipwreck Coast, due to the large number of water vessels that ran aground in the 1800s and early 1900s due to ferocious weather conditions and the rocky coastline.
Warrnambool is the end of the road and it is jam packed with things for families to do. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village is a living historical village that displays the life of a 19th century port and town, and holder of Victoria’s largest maritime shipwreck collection. It occupies a beautiful site, tumbling down the bluff towards Lady Bay. You can explore the village area that has over 40 buildings and vessels spread over 10 hectares.

The famous Vintage Talking Tram Tour weaves through the streets of Bendigo and tells wonderful stories of days gone by.
You can spend some time exploring the life of a gold miner at the Central Deborah Gold Mine. You can even take a tour deep underground!
Afterwards, take a guided tour through the 1903 Tramways Depot and Workshop to see firsthand the craftmanship involved in restoring each tram to its former glory.
Bendigo has a long Chinese history which can be traced back to the gold rush, and today you can explore an original 1860’s Joss House and view Chinese cultural artefacts at the Golden Dragon Museum. Bendigo’s popular Easter Festival even has the world’s oldest Imperial Dragon as its main attraction!
More gold was found in Bendigo between 1850 – 1900 than anywhere in the world. There was very little surface gold, it was contained in rich quartz reefs stretching all over the city. Today there are still tunnels deep underground that criss-cross the whole area.
Nearby, there are also trail riding opportunities, a brand new rail trail out towards Axedale, kilometres of city cycling trails, a bowling alley and The Zone Entertainment complex with a range of activities to occupy the family!

Come and enjoy Echuca and Moama, for a week, a weekend, or even a day! Visitors never forget the feeling they have when they first sight an historic paddle steamer churning its way down the Murray; it is a feeling of time standing still. The Echuca-Moama region is famous for transporting visitors back in time as they become immersed in the history and atmosphere of the region. It is Australia’s Paddle Steamer capital with a rich and exciting colonial heritage. It’s also the perfect place for a relaxing holiday with plenty to see and do only 2.5 hours from Melbourne.

The town was surveyed in 1854 and quickly became one of Australia’s busiest inland ports, with paddle steamers ferrying supplies throughout Australia’s interior via the river network.
Only a small section of the wharf remains today, preserved as part of the recreated Port of Echuca tourist attraction, and serving as a great viewing deck of the Murray River and surrounding bush.

The historic Port Precinct is recognised as one of Australia’s finest heritage icons and is home to the largest riverboat fleet in the world.
You can step back in time and experience the magic of the paddlesteamers era by taking a cruise on ne of the fully restored boats. How better to spend a restful morning, afternoon or evening than a cruise along the peaceful Murray, listening to the slap, slap of the paddles, passing by giant river red gums with their twisted roots exposed, watching cormorants dry their wings, pelicans lazily swimming or swallows darting about the wake of the boat. Murray River Paddlesteamers (p.61) love kids and will make sure the family truly feels like they have stepped back in time to the paddlesteamers era when you take a cruise on one of their steam driven vessels. Why not be the captain of your own journey!

The port area has undergone some significant renovation and restoration in the last few years and now boasts an interpretative centre. The old favourites like paddle steamer trips, horse and carriage rides, the olde world penny arcade at Sharps, ice cream parlours, workshops demonstrating the trades of the day, as well as plenty of cafes and beautifully restored pubs from the golden age of the riverboat trade are still there.

Out & About
If you love life by the water you'll love Yarrawonga and Mulwala! ‘It is an ‘Inland Aquatic Paradise’. There’s plenty to see and do, whether you want to enjoy a leisurely round of golf, explore the lake beaches and walking tracks, take a trip to sample local wines and produce, or check the museums and amusement park! The Yarrawonga Weir is the largest of the 16 weirs on the Murray River. It was constructed between 1935-1939 and created Lake Mulwala. Lake Mulwala is an unforgettable sight, lying between the twin towns of Yarrawonga Mulwala, with its majestic and ghostly river red gums.
Photo Courtesy of Visions of Victoria
With the region’s long summer days and calm conditions, it is a perfect place to get out on the water and take a cruise, go water-skiing or wakeboarding, to try your hand at sailing, or simply take a leisurely paddle and experience Lake Mulwala and the Murray River.
Both sides of the lake have attractive shorelines that have plenty of activities around the year; including playgrounds, a skate park, swimming pools and even a splash pool.
LetsGoKids Melbourne 2019
Yarrawonga
Picnicking, bird watching, fishing, sailboarding, water skiing, swimming, canoeing, sailing, boating and paddle-boat cruises are all popular on the lake. Pelican Island is a breeding ground for pelicans. There are several ibis rookeries and thousands of partially submerged trees are perfect sites for breeding birds. There are boat ramps and some fine foreshore parks adjacent to the roads which hug the southern foreshore at Yarrawonga.

Kick back on the banks at dusk and take in a spectacular sunset over the water. The twisted trunks of the submerged red gum forest make for a striking scene. Alternatively, cast a line for the local Murray cod and golden perch, The Visitor Information Centre has brochures which describe the 11 walks and bicycle tracks around the town and beside the lake. Mulwala has three excellent clubs. The Ski Club runs ski shows over summer that will entertain and thrill the kids with the waterskiing, wakeboarding and jet skiing skills that are on display - it is a long time Mulwala tradition. The Golf Club has a movie theatre showing all the latest releases.
DID YOU KNOW
Wander along both sides of Belmore Street and observe the commemorative plaques which tell the story of Yarrawonga’s main street. There are numerous arts and crafts stores to browse, cafes and bakeries in which to sit and sip a latte and watch the world go by. "Yarra" is a bit like that!
Yarrawonga
Yarrawonga was the name given to a local pastoral station in 1842. The term is probably a Yorta Yorta Aboriginal word meaning either "place where the wnga pigeon rested" or "water running over rocks"
Take a stroll and soak in the history of the town. In the summer months, at the Yarrawonga end of the Lake Mulwala bridge, Aquazone (see below) makes itself home. There are huge inflatable activities - slides, pontoons and bouncing castles. Yarrawonga has an excellent variety of shops and cafes along its long main street.
