The Wet season is November to April and the Dry season May to October. During January and February monsoon weather dumps heavy afternoon and overnight rain, which makes it quite humid but means you will get to see the beautiful waterfalls and lush tropical growth. Average temperatures range from 24° – 38°. The Red Centre has very little rain and very low humidity throughout the year. Nights can be much colder than further north (lowest on record for Alice Springs is -7.8°!), but generally winter ranges from 3° – 20° and summer 20° – 35°.
Time: The NT is on Australian Central Standard Time (ACST). They are ½ an hour behind Eastern States and they don't have daylight savings time so become 1½ hours behind from October to March. The NT is on the same time as Adelaide and is 1 1/2 hours ahead of Perth.

Darwin - Out & About Darwin is a friendly, cosmopolitan and growing city where locals and visitors enjoy the unique and enviable tropical lifestyle.
Having been almost entirely rebuilt twice, once due to air raids during World War II, and again after being devastated by Cyclone Tracy in 1974, Darwin is now one of Australia’s most modern capital cities. Darwin is also Australia’s natural gateway to Asia.
It is a very relaxed and liveable place, with plenty of opportunity and choice for its people. Darwin is home to around 75,000 people, spread across 36 suburbs.
The original inhabitants of the greater Darwin area are the Larrakia people, who have been here for around 40,000 years. There are many places in and around Darwin where Aboriginal culture and a vibrant arts scene can be enjoyed.

Darwin's shopping experience of choice, is the good old fashioned open air market. There seems to be markets everywhere that sell clothes, jewellery, art & craft, provide massages and of course sell food! There are the Mindil Beach Markets,The Rapid Creek, Parap (on Saturday morn), Nightcliff and Palmerston Markets. Details in the Wot's On section (p.58) The CBD has many, many speciality shops and arcades as well as the slightly bigger plaza in Mitchell St (complete with FREE parking). The two larger shopping malls are Casuarina Square and Palmerston Shopping Centre which offer lots of the national “chain” stores. They are air-conditioned, have food courts and are open for late night shopping on Fridays. There are also shopping strips in Parap (Parap Road), Rapid Creek (Trower Rd) Nightcliff (Progress Drive & Dick Ward Drive) Karama Plaza (Koolinda Cres) Stuart Park and Winellie Central along the highway in Winnellie. Coolalinga is a rapidly expanding shopping centre as well.

The cuisine is heavily influenced by the proximity of Asia, with lots of different spices and produce used in the cooking. What is the local speciality? Seafood of course and in particular, Barra! This beautiful eating fish is everywhere. Grilled, fried, as a burger, in a curry, with noodles or rice, even the kids will love the taste. You’ll also find other authentic NT cuisine like mud crabs, buffalo, kangaroo, camel and crocodile. You will see these on the menu wherever you go, so give em a try!
Nearby the Darwin Waterfront complex has restaurants and take away to suit all tastes. Hot Tamale Mexican Restaurant, Wharf One Food and Wine and the new Precinct are worth a look. The meals at Fiddlers Green are huge!
Not To Be Missed!!
Of course one family dining experience not to be missed is the Mindil Beach Markets on a Thursday and Sunday during the dry season (p.9). It is all takeaway, but there is food from every country imaginable. You will find something for everyone at a reasonable price. Photo courtesy of NT Tourism
Darwin has an abundance of casual eateries and “food experiences” that are perfect for a relaxed family meal.
You will also find other authentic NT cuisine like mud crabs, buffalo, kangaroo, camel and crocodile. You will see these on the menu wherever you go, so give ‘em a try! Mitchell Street in the city has many outlets for a quick lunch or a sit down dinner. There are sandwich shops, noodles, Italian, fish and chips and Thai. There are several pubs as well. For the best barra in town, try the Barra Bar. The Darwin Sailing Club and the Trailer Boat Club in Fannie Bay have million dollar views as the sun goes down and you can sit on the shady grassed area overlooking the water. Casual bistro setting. The food is great, the setting even better. The Trailer Boat Club has playground, swimming pool, beach and soft sand for the kids to play on.

There are so many local parks and beach areas nearby as well as having a number of National Parks and top notch nature reserves right on our doorstep. Below you will find a selection of our favourites where you can run, walk, play, swim, ride, BBQ or picnic. (Also check the Darwin Rural Area section p.24-25 for extra info). East Point Reserve Offers safe year-round saltwater swimming at Lake Alexander, a range of barbecue and picnic facilities in a landscaped environment and an excellent playground. The beaches on East Point Reserve are an important recreation resource. Fannie Bay Beach, with its adjacent parkland and barbecue area, is probably the most popular family beach in Darwin. A meandering walking trail through the vine forest provides access and encourages visitors to experience the forest and appreciate its diversity and beauty.
The wallabies at East Point have been a feature of the reserve for many years. They are a delightful attraction for both locals and visitors. Nightcliff Foreshore Situated off Casuarina Drive with plenty of car parking facilities, the footpath along the foreshore of Nightcliff is used for walking and cycling, particularly in the evenings after work. Along the footpath there is Nightcliff Jetty, Nightcliff Beach and Nightcliff Swimming Pool. The foreshore itself incorporates access to mangrove communities and the beach, along with links back to WWII historical sites. Photo courtesy of NT Tourism

You might be coming through the Stuart Highway from South Australia, or the Victoria Highway from the Kimberley region of Western Australia or making the trek from Queensland to Darwin, you will at some stage cross into the Victoria Daly region.
Victoria Daly
You’ll be greeted by unique landscapes, wonderful history and a culture the Top End is renowned for.
48
Victoria Daly’s communities include Kakarindji/ Daguragu, Pine Creek, Peppimenarti, Nauiyu (Daly River), Yarralin, Palumpa, Wadeye (Port Keats) and Timber Creek-offering the adventurer an unparalleled choice of activities and sights. Only two hours south of Darwin, the Victoria Daly region gets its name from two of Australia’s most iconic rivers – the Victoria River and the Daly River, home to the biggest Barramundi in the NT. If you are looking for four-wheel drive adventure, there are plenty of tracks around, where you can discover the rugged country of the Gregory National Park or Keep River National Park.
The ultra adventurous can test their skills on The Duncan Track to Halls Creek in WA or The Binns Track from SA. And the picturesque Savannah Way will take you all the way through to Broome or Cairns. History buffs will enjoy learning about our early settlement when the Overland Telegraph Line, early steam trains and gold mining opened up this last frontier of Northern Australia with some fantastic historical displays on offer at Pine Creek. The historic Ghan, the modern day train of the desert, also travels through the Victoria Daly region between Darwin and Adelaide, retracing the steps of the early camel drivers who helped open up this beautiful area to new settlers. Timber Creek Timber Creek was named in 1855 when the explorer Augusts Gregory’s 1855-56 expedition used timber from the banks of the creek to repair his expedition’s boat. The first inhabitants were the Ngaliwurra and Nungali people, descendents of whom still live in Timber Creek.
The mighty Victoria River
Today this small town has a range of accommodation, activities and other facilities for the traveller.
Steeped in Australian history, the Victoria River is a mecca for fishing and produces some of the Territory’s biggest and best barramundi.
Walk along the Heritage Trail to see wildlife, historic sites and pioneer’s graves.
Barra can be caught all year round but the best time is between late March to late May.
