Really, really important stuff Weather: The Top End has lots of sunshine all year. The Wet season is November to April and the Dry season May to October. During January and February, monsoon weather dumps heavy afternoon and overnight rain, which makes it quite humid but means you will get to see the beautiful waterfalls and lush tropical growth. Average temperatures range from 24° – 38°. The Red Centre has very little rain and very low humidity throughout the year. Nights can be much colder than further north (lowest on record for Alice Springs is -7.8°!), but generally winter ranges from 3° – 20° and summer 20° – 35°.

Time: The NT is on Australian Central Standard Time (ACST). They are ½ an hour behind Eastern States and they don't have daylight savings time so become 1½ hours behind from October to March. The NT is on the same time as Adelaide and is 1 1/2 hours ahead of Perth.

Darwin - Out & About Darwin is dynamic, different, diverse and constantly evolving as Australia’s most cosmopolitan city.

With a population of 120,000 Darwin in Australia is small for a city, which makes it easy to get around. It also makes for a relaxed atmosphere.

Although you are in a city you are still in the Australian Outback... In Darwin you can enjoy all the benefits of a city: museums, cultural events, shopping malls and fine dining. But you will also see many four wheel drives on the roads, and come across quirky Outback characters. The people are genuine, open and friendly. Darwin is the ‘capital’ of northern Australia and is closer to Jakarta than it is to Sydney, and closer to Singapore than it is to Melbourne, so it’s no surprise that Darwin looks outward to Asia as much as it looks inland to the rest of Australia.

Fast Fact In business and industry circles, Darwin is described as Australia’s gateway with South East Asia. It’s closer to the Indonesian capital of Jakarta than it is to Canberra and is about the same flying time from Singapore and Manila as it is from Sydney and Melbourne. Valid Until 31/03/15

12

LetsGoKids Northern Territory 2015

Darwin - Out & About The city’s multicultural mix is particularly highlighted by its many exciting ethnic cultural festivals and weekly food and craft markets. Of course, Darwin’s traditional owners, the Larrakia people, also bring their own history, culture, beliefs and customs to the mix. The end result is an ever changing, ever evolving community that accepts and welcomes everyone. The warm, tropical climate of Darwin and its surrounding area is characterised by two distinct seasons with tell-tale titles: the ‘Wet’ and the ‘Dry’. The Wet season, spanning from November until April, is characterised by high levels of humidity followed by monsoonal rains and storms. The ‘Dry’ season, from May until October, is characterised by warm, dry sunny days and cool nights. While a sophisticated, modern city in its own right, it is also one steeped in history, one that has endured many hardships on its way to establishing itself as the gateway to Asia. Darwin was attacked 64 times during the war and 243 people lost their lives; it was the only place in Australia to suffer prolonged attack.

Safety House members provide a safe place for children to go if they are feeling scared, are lost, being bullied or are frightened by dogs whilst travelling to and from school. If you are home or open for business between 7am - 8am and 2.30pm - 4pm most weekdays, are willing to apply for a Working with Children Volunteer Ochre Card and can commit to an annual National Criminal History check, you are eligible to apply.

The Fun Bus is a mobile playgroup service jointly funded by the City of Darwin and the Northern Territory Government. The playgroups are informal sessions where parents, carers, babies and children aged 0 to 5 years can come together

in a relaxed and friendly environment. They provide children with an opportunity to have funand interact with one another, whilst developing social and creative skills through play.

The City of Darwin provides a wide range of recreational facilities where families, young peopleand children can all enjoy Darwin’s outdoor lifestyle.FREEPS (Free Recreation and Entertainment for Everyone in the Parks) is a fun-filled program that gives both young and old the opportunity to enjoy and participate in free recreational activities and entertainment in Darwin’s local parks. FREEPS events are held on various Saturdays and Sundays during the Dry Season.

It operates weekdays between 9:30am and 11:30am for 46 weeks per year between February and December. For six weeks during the wet season, the Fun Bus operates from a variety of indoor/undercover venues and then for the rest of the year it operates at various outdoor locations throughout the municipality. Out & About - Darwin Waterfront

The old favourites in the area such as Indo Pacific Marine (see opposite) and the World War II Oil Tunnels are still there (p.33), but they have been joined by an exciting bunch of newcomers. The area now boasts TWO world class aquatic playgrounds. The Wave Lagoon pool is awesome! Swim, surf the waves on a boogie board, lounge around or grab a bite to eat. If the pace of the waves is too hectic for you, walk across to the Recreation Lagoon, which is safety netted, (so you can swim without getting eaten),

Did You Know?

Darwin Waterfront

There is an interpretative trail to the wharf beginning at the top of Harry Chan Drive and winding its way down the hill to the start of the wharf. It tells the story of arriving into Darwin by sea in days gone by.

Both areas are lifeguard patrolled, and the carpark under the Medina hotel has FREE parking for 2 hours, or it is an easy stroll from the CBD now the access bridges are in place and they lead you straight up into the Smith St mall! The Darwin Waterfront around the Stokes Hill Wharf area has undergone a massive facelift. You should see it now!!

The new precinct has recently seen shops and eateries popping up. The Coffee Club is a relaxing place to meet and grab lunch. It’s located next to the access elevators. Trampoline offers cool snacks that kids love and are open evenings! There is an awesome surf shop (Rush) an Irish Pub, restaurants for all tastes, whilst the ladies are catered for with a hairdresser and day spa.

Darwin Waterfront - Out & About Worth a Look The Waterfront area boasts two other great family tourist attractions; Indo Pacific Marine (see below) is Darwin’s aquarium and the WWII Oil Tunnels ( Voucher p.33), which offer an insight into Darwin’s role in WWII.

Entertainment, competitions and a second to none outdoor setting make this a great (and inexpensive) family gathering place. John Lort Stokes would be proud!

Did You Know? There is a free courtesy shuttle from the Darwin Waterfront to Wharf One, running daily from 11 - 6 (pictured right)

There are three major shopping centres. In the City, at Casuarina and at Palmerston with many other shopping centres located throughout the suburbs. These centres boast a huge array of both large and specialty shops from major supermarket chains through to small boutiques. Darwin’s famous markets provide a wonderful alternative for shopping and relaxing. Casuarina contains groups of shops, offices, banks and other buildings including the Casurina Shopping Square.

As a young and modern city, Darwin provides a full range of services for its residents.

With around 165 specialty shops, plus Coles, K-Mart, Big W, and Woolworths, this is the biggest retail complex in the NT. The food court is a popular place on a hot day as people take advantage of the air conditioning and high quality restaurants and cafes.

Shop An area which has grown rapidly in recent years, the Coolalinga shops provide for the outer area of Darwin which has a population of nearly 20,000 people living on rural properties. The original Darwin CBD area is centered around the Smith St Mall, with new Coles and Woolworths supermarkets only a stones throw away. Food malls, clothes, a newsagent, chemists and tourist orientated shops dominate this area. Palmerston has several medium centres located within a short walk of each other, including Palmerston Shopping Centre and Palm City Oasis. The Palmerston bus exchange makes this a busy area. The only Target store in Darwin is located here. Local markets are a big part of Darwin’s personality. At the famous Mindil Beach Sunset Markets, sample international cuisine from some 60 food stalls – Sri Lankan, Turkish, Greek, Cambodian, Japanese – and eat on the beach as the sun sinks into the ocean. After dinner, find the perfect gift among stalls of art and craft, then relax with a local ice-cream or mango smoothie as fire twirlers, musicians and street performers entertain the crowds. Mix it with locals and travellers and feel the buzz of arts, crafts and music.

This is your chance to really find out what makes the Top End tick. You will also find them in Nightcliff on Sunday morning, Parap on Saturday morning, Rapid Creek on Sunday morning and Palmerston on Friday night.

Play / Party Darwin has an amazing outdoor lifestyle and so much to see and do for families in the local parks and beach areas, as well as the close by National Parks and nature reserves.

There is a children’s playground halfway along the park, an eagle’s nest lookout at the northern end and a Cenotaph honouring our war heroes. Sunsets from here are spectacular.

You will find wide open spaces to play, walk, run, swim, ride or picnic right across the Top End. Here are a selection of our favourites. East Point Reserve Offers safe year-round saltwater swimming at Lake Alexander, a range of barbecue and picnic facilities in a landscaped environment and an excellent playground. The beaches on East Point Reserve are an important recreation resource. Fannie Bay Beach, with its adjacent parkland and barbecue area, is probably the most popular family beach in Darwin. A meandering walking trail through the vine forest provides access and encourages visitors to experience the forest and appreciate its diversity and beauty. The wallabies at East Point have been a feature of the reserve for many years. They are a delightful attraction for both locals and visitors.

Nightcliff Foreshore Situated off Casuarina Drive with plenty of carparking facilities, the footpath along the foreshore of Nightcliff is used for walking and cycling, particularly in the evenings after work. Along the footpath there is Nightcliff Jetty, Nightcliff Beach and Nightcliff Swimming Pool. The foreshore itself incorporates access to mangrove communities and the beach, along with links back to WWII historical sites.

The Esplanade Beautiful Bicentennial Park runs the length of The Esplanade and a walking/cycling track goes from Doctors Gully in the north to the Wharf Precinct in the south.

Casuarina Coastal Reserve Located in the city’s northern suburbs, this coastal reserve is a great place for a walk along the beach, to catch a sunset from the Dripstone Cliffs or enjoy a picnic in the shady recreational areas.

Kakadu National Park The largest in Australia. It is situated 250 km from Darwin on the Arnhem Highway. Renowned internationally for its natural and cultural wonders, Kakadu has one of the highest concentrated areas of Aboriginal rock art sites in the world.

Litchfield National Park The 1,500 sq km2 park is an easy 1 1/2hr from Darwin. It contains several types of typical Top End habitats including lush monsoon forests, termite mounds, unusual rock formations, waterfalls and cascades. During monsoon season, four major waterfalls thunder from the cliffs to tropical rock pools metres below. During the rest of the year the waterfalls flow more gently, making the waterholes perfect spots for a cool dip.
