Time

New Zealand is one of the first places in the world to see the new day, 12 hours ahead of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). In Summer, New Zealand uses ‘Daylight Saving’, with clocks put forward one hour to GMT +13. Daylight saving begins on the last Sunday in September and ends on the first Sunday of the following April, when clocks are put back to GMT+12.

Weather New Zealand has a temperate climate with moderately high rainfall and many hours of sunshine. While the far north has subtropical weather during summer, and inland alpine areas of the South Island can be as cold as -10°C (14°F) in winter, most of the country lies close to the coast, which means mild temperatures. The average New Zealand temperature decreases as you travel south. January and February are the warmest months, and July is the coldest month of the year. In summer, the average maximum temperature ranges between 20-30ºC (70-90°F) and in winter between 10-15ºC (50-60°F).

Auckland Who said: “You don’t get something for nothing?” Let LetsGoKids show you how to spend a day or even a week in and around Auckland “on the cheap”, where you can see and do lots ...... And spend nothing! (or just a little). Sweet as, bro! 1. Check out p.28 and find out what is happening this week in the “City of Sails”. Auckland has some great events and most are free! 2.

Head down to the Ferry Terminal on Quay St opposite Princes Wharf and watch the ferries come and go. Better still go for a ride on one (costs a little).

3.

The city hosts markets at Britomart and “K” Rd on Saturdays. Browse for a bargain or grab something fresh and tasty for lunch.

4.

Spend 50c to board the red coloured “City Link” public bus that will take you to all the main points of the CBD so you can get your bearings.

5.

Walk up to the Sky Tower and watch the daredevils try the “Sky Walk”.

6.

Take a walk through the Wynyard Quarter. Check out the boats, the statues (and they have an awesome playground).

7.

Auckland War Memorial Museum tells the tale of Auckland’s history and cultural heritage. Open daily with cultural performances (some cost – www.aucklandmuseum.com)

8.

Take a walk through the Auckland Domain and check out the Duck Ponds and vast open spaces. This was Auckland’s first water supply.

9.

Climb to the top of North Head and explore the WWII tunnels and gun placements.

VISIT THE ICONIC

Sky Tower Auckland just isn’t complete without it! • The tallest man-made structure in New Zealand standing 328 metres tall • Enjoy a ride up the glass fronted lifts • Magnificent 360-degree views for up to 80 kilometres in every direction • Sky Tower Gift Shop

Sky Tower may be closed from time to time due to adverse weather conditions.

Play / Party Auckland has plenty of activities (both inside and out) to keep the whole family busy after school, on weekends and holidays.

CORNWALL PARK

The entire city of Auckland is surrounded by parks and gardens and right across the whole town you will find wide open spaces for walking, jogging, cycling, horse riding, picnicking, barbecuing, playing, bird watching, playing with the footy, flying a kite, doing some fishing or getting up close and personal with animals or even sitting still and watching the world go by. Auckland’s temperate weather means you can spend lots of time enjoying the great outdoors. Here is a selection of our favourites: Botanic Gardens – Manurewa The Gardens are located in Manurewa and feature plants from New Zealand and abroad. There are free guided tours, and on weekends you can take an inexpensive train ride around the Gardens. There is also a dedicated children’s garden and the Agent Ani Adventure Trail. Duck food is available for 20 cents to feed the resident duck families down by the lake. They also run regular workshops and exhibits for children during school holiday periods. Check www.aucklandbotanicgardens.co.nz for details.

Photo courtesy of tourism New Zealand

Cornwall Park – Greenlane Located close to the city with grazing animals. There is a large playground, flying fox, plenty of space and a cafe to replenish the energy levels. The Stardome Observatory & Planetarium are located here too. They run regular family events during school holiday periods, so check their website or letsgokids.co.nz for regular updates.

Play / Party Auckland Rainforest Auckland is one of the only places outside the tropics where rainforest exists. The rainforest of the Waitakere Ranges is an ecological masterpiece situated only 24 km west of the CBD. It has 250 km of walking trails that take you through native tress to streams, waterfalls and rugged beaches. Some of the trees are 600 years old! Auckland Domain The Domain is Auckland’s oldest park and has plenty of open space and greenery. It is home to the War Memorial Museum. It has duck ponds, natural springs, and large trees which make it a great spot for a family picnic close to the CBD.

Playgrounds Olympic Park – New Lynn 17 minutes from the CBD, it has lots of open space, walking trails, sculptures, streams, rope climbing frames, traditional swings and a large sandpit. Owairaka Park – Mt Albert This is a new park that is well frequented. It has a skate park, volleyball court, bike track, flying fox, some climbing walls as well as traditional playground equipment. Definitely a new age park! Barry Curtis Wetland Playground – Flatbush An unusual playground in the traditional sense, it has two birds’ keeps 3m off the ground accessed by ladders! Well worth a look!

Photo courtesy of Visions of Victoria

Snakes & Ladders – Farm Cove Next door to Pakuranga Sailing Club, it is a giant snakes and ladders game set into a hill. Spin the dice at the bottom and climb up the stepping stones. If you land on a ladder, climb up - if you land on a “snake”, (which is a wiggly slide), you slide down. A great twist on an old favourite. Ambury Regional Park Ambury is located in Mangere Bridge and is actually a working farm. It has an education centre and plenty of spots for bird watching. You can stroll the paths and check out the farm animals. Western Springs This park has been an Auckland family favourite for years. Feed the ducks, ride your bike around the lakes or play on the great playground. Close to Auckland Zoo too. Hunua Regional Park This park is full of natural wonders, native wildlife, gushing waterfalls and tranquil streams. Mountain bikers have three tracks to choose from, including an easy valley loop.

Snowplanet indoor snow play park is perfect no matter what the weather. It houses a ski slope with two pomas, a terrain park for the more adventurous, and a snow tube area. The cafe is set up as a traditional lodge - have a hot chocolate. It’s just like being at the mountain (except you dont have to drive far!) (see p.12) Lessons and gear are available. Great fun! LetsGoKids New Zealand 2014/15

Schnapper Rock – Albany The best thing about this is the water play equipment. Children get to use a hand pump to activate the water sequence down the manmade creek bed. Something different! Heron Park – Avondale Spacenet, flying fox, swings, slides all on soft fall rubber – Great fun! Wynyard Quarter – CBD Down by the wharf area, this new playground is themed around the sea and it will capture the kids imagination. It’s close by to cafes too, so you can grab that latte whilst the kids play!

Play / Party Beaches – Aaah – This is what I’m talkin’ about bro!!

Auckland and the North Island have some of the most pristine, white (and black) sand ocean strips anywhere in the world. The entire City of Auckland is surrounded by beaches, and add to that the nearby islands, and you have plenty of choice to frolic down by the sea. (The water can be a bit chilly though!). Mission Bay Close to the CBD and with the convenience of shops, cafes and restaurants nearby. This is perfect when the kids just have to get their feet wet! Cornwallis Beach In the same area as Piha, Cornwallis is a safe swimming spot for families. Great picnic spot.

Piha Beach This is one of Auckland’s famous BLACK sand beaches. Located in the Waitakere Ranges, it is a popular swimming beach. The scenery is awesome.

Waiheke Island Waiheke has some great beach spots, and all are relatively quiet. For families try Little Oneroa, which offers safe sheltered swimming and is close by to shops. Palm Beach has clam waters, a playground (when beach boredom sets in) and has shops nearby. To the south of the island, Whakanewha Bay offers picnic areas and safe, shallow swimming. Kelvin Strand Beach Almost at the tip of the Te Atatu Peninsula is one hidden treasure. The beach is a real gem - lovely white sand, regenerating wetlands, and a large grassy park and playground. This beach is best visited at high tide, although at low tide it’s possible to walk to a sand bar about 100m off the beach. A good alternative is to bring bikes and ride along the relatively new Harbourview Walkway.

Worth a Look!

Candyland is located 15 minutes North of Hamilton in Tupiri. It boasts a wide selection of sweets manufactured on site and even has ‘Candyland Shows’ for the public every Saturday and during School Holidays

The beach areas of Kawhai and Raglan offer a different experience. Courtesy of ancient lava flows, the beaches are made of black sand! Raglan is a popular surfing spot and at Kawhai, you can dig your own pool on the ocean beach where heated water bubbles up through the sand from a geothermal spring underneath. They even have shovels to rent – A unique experience!! Also, nearby is the underground wonderland of Waitomo (p.24)

Mt Maunganui & Tauranga

“The Mount” is the colloquial name for Mount Maunganui, a beach town that occupies a peninsula at the southern end of Tauranga Harbour. The peninsula is actually a huge sandbar, with a sheltered bay on the inner harbour side

and a magnificent surf beach on the ocean side. You can’t take a trip to The Mount without taking advantage of its no.1 natural attraction - Head up the Mount for amazing views . With an average walking time of about 30-45 minutes to the top – why not take a picnic? They even have benches too! Situated at the base of Mauao are the Mt Maunganui Hot Salt Water Pools, the country’s only geothermally-heated hot salt water pools. The complex features several spa pools, two larger pools plus a children’s play area. On the opposite side of Mauao is the sheltered harbourside of Pilot Bay, which is a launching pad for boats and kayaks. It’s also a shallow swimming spot ideal for families with young children. Mount Maunganui is one of those places that is just perfect for families!!!! On the ocean side is the famous Mount Maunganui surf beach. Ocean Beach extends to Papamoa to the south and offers more beautiful rolling waves and miles of golden sand beach. The beach is accessible from many points along the coastal main road, and unlike similar beaches around the world, you will always find a large stretch of sand to spread out and spend the day.

- Rotorua Rotorua (or Rotovegas) as it is sometimes referred to, is located about three hours drive from Auckland. It nestles around the shores of the surprisingly named Lake Rotorua, which was created from the crater of a large volcano. The city is a great place to base yourself from for trips to the wonders and highlights of the middle of the North Island. Mt Maunganui, Whakatane, Taupo and Hamilton are all only one hours drive away. Rotorua is not just the beating heart of the North Island, but also of Maori culture. The other things it is world famous for are the abundance of adventure activities and its geothermal activity.

Everywhere you go in Rotorua, you can notice the smell of the sulphur in the air. It is normally the thing people remember most about New Zealand’s tenth largest city/town. As you walk or drive around you will notice wisps of steam escaping out of vents, grates and simply holes in the ground. Some will be natural, some are manmade. Don’t worry – you soon get used to the smell!!

Fun Fact

The Te Manaroa Spring at Waikite Valley Thermal Pools gushes 1800 litres of boiling water per minute all day everyday.

The reason for all the steam and smell, is because Rotorua is a part of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The Volcanic Zone, a geothermal field that extends from White Island through to Mt Ruapehu on the south side of Taupo provides erupting geysers, bubbling mud pools and naturally heated mineral waters that are said to have great healing properties. Spa baths are everywhere and the Polynesian Spa and Blue Baths have family heated pools. The kids love splashing around in the warm and inviting waters.

Rotorua The beautiful Government Gardens are a mixture of Maori and English culture that contain the Rotorua Museum which tells the history of the area, and they cater for kids (see below). Rotorua is the ancestral home of the Te Arawa people who settled here over 600 years ago and their presence today offers visitors many different cultural experiences.

The local Maori community share their culture, music, history, dance, customs, art and language through various villages and shows that are fantastic for families. Kids will love the traditional dance and to see the “hangi” cooking in the ground then sampling it at one of the cultural evenings. There are many to choose from. We say Tamaki Brothers (p.34) and Mitai (p.33) are best and each experience is different - Do both!

TAMAKI MAORI VILLAGE EVENING CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

Experience a 3 ½ hour evening of ceremonial ritual, powerful cultural performance, storytelling & hangi feasting followed by dessert! Pickup and drop-off included from Rotorua accommodation.

In the early hours of the morning of June 10 1886, the Tarawera range was erupting. At 12:30am the first earthquakes were felt. People throughout the area were jolted awake as earthquakes became increasingly powerful. By 2.30am its three peaks were erupting, with columns reaching thousands of metres into the sky. Destructive, hurricane force winds developed as the eruption columns sucked in air from the surrounding countryside. Violent electrical storms above the eruption columns blasted into the night sky, with water vapours poured out by the eruption causing torrential rains. The final length of the craters was a massive 16-km long. The death toll is not known exactly, but some 150 people are believed to have died that night. For the surviving local Maori, the eruption was devastating. Their ancestors' remains were destroyed, many of their people were killed and their lands and livelihood were metres deep in mud and ash. In addition, the amazing Pink and White Terraces - recognised as the eighth wonder of the world - were completely destroyed. Today you can visit Buried Village (see opposite) to witness what once was a Maori Village before the eruption.

White Island is a perfect example of an active volcano. It breathes, roars and hisses from steaming vents that release 800C gases. It’s wild! The island is roughly circular, about 2km in diameter and rises to a height of 321m above sea level. However, what you are seeing is only the peak of a much larger submerged mountain. It has had 35 small to medium eruptions since 1826. You can take a guided tour with PeeJay White Island Tours and get up close and personal with the steaming vents and the green sulphur lakes.

Nearby to Whakatane is Ohope Beach which has a 10km sandy beach, a small village like atmosphere and is perfect for camping, surfing, walking , playing on the beach and just hanging out with the family.

Whakatane

Whakatane is also the jumping off point for the spectacular White Island! This always active volcano is 49 km off the shores of Whakatane, but is well worth the visit. In fact we think it is one of the world’s great adventures!

The short distance between towns in the middle of the North Island means that a family driving holiday is easily achieved. The kids don’t even have time to ask “Are we there yet?” Of course you need to book ahead whether you or coming to town for a week or a few days.

Manukau Holiday Park

We’ve done our homework, and chosen a few in each area specifically for their value, special deals for families or family friendly features such as; location, price, playgrounds, pools and activity programs. Book direct for the best deals and also check our website or download our app – www.letsgokids.co.nz/app to stay up to date!

The CBD doesn’t possess many family hotels, but Barclay Suites offer kitchen facilities and 2 bed apartments. There are several Quest options. Not too far out of town and near major attractions, the Manakau Holiday Park (see opposite) has plenty of room to move and onsite accommodation.

DeBretts (p.53) has accommodation options aplenty, and best of all - a heated aquatic playground.

Hamilton There are a large amount of family motel type accommodations on Ulster St which offer the standard fare. Our fave is Quest Hamilton (p.22 ) in the middle of town that is spacious with kitchens and walking distance to everything. When visiting the Waitomo area, the Otorohanga Holiday Park (p.23) has ample space for the kids to roam and it has a full onsite gym!

Rotorua There are so many options here to suit all tastes and budgets. Holiday Inn has kids “Eat and Stay free”, Rydges do the same. Fenton Court is centrally located for easy access to town, as is the Top 10 Holiday Park (p.39). It has “A” grade facilities including lounges and kitchens, outdoor areas and a great landscaped mineral pool area. There are a range of quality onsite accommodations.

Mt Maunganui/Tauranga Summit Motor Lodge (p.25) is exceptional family value with large rooms. If you are looking for a holiday park Papamoa Beach resort is right on the ocean. Whakatane Just out of town at Thornton Beach is a Holiday Park the kids will love. Huge jumping pillow!
