Out & About

- Auckland

Auckland’s stunning landscape features three harbours, 3702km of coastline, a lush green landscape dotted with 48 volcanoes, 34 regional parks, and more than 21,000 kms of rivers and streams, which means New Zealand’s largest city has hundreds of thrilling adventures waiting for you to make happen. It is incredibly family friendly.

Auckland is centred around its waterfront, that is also the main transport hub. The commuter ferry terminal, trains for travel to the south and west from nearby Britomart and the extensive bus networks all radiate out of this precinct. Nearby is Viaduct Harbour. Built for the hosting of the America’s Cup, this area is now home to museums, bars, restaurants, walking and cycling paths, plenty of maritime history (including a giant yacht suspended above the entranceway) as well as kid’s playgrounds and accommodation.

Auckland

Locals affectionately refer to it as a city with four seasons in one day – the maritime climate means relatively mild winters and warm humid summers. It rains a lot, so dress in layers and pack an umbrella. The summer months (December – March) are generally the best time to visit, but there’s still lots happening over winter too.

Auckland, or Tamaki Makaurau as it's known, is home to almost 1.8 million people and is a cultural melting pot. It's the largest Polynesian city in the world and has over 200 ethnic groups living there, which makes it officially more diverse than London or Sydney!

Out & About

- Auckland

The easiest thing to look out for if you ever get lost in the CBD is the Sky Tower. At 328 metres tall, it is hard to miss. The tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere is an attraction for adrenaline junkies wishing to walk around its high ledge or do the SkyJump. Or you can simply take in the view of central Auckland and the surrounding areas, such as the Hauraki Gulf and the Harbour Bridge, by going to multiple viewing platforms in the tower or having a coffee at the Sky Lounge.

It’s a challenging walk but you can also buy tickets for a tractor train to get you to the top if it’s too far. You will need to take your own food and drinks to the island as there is no shop or water supply over there. To the east of the city, there are beautiful islands perfect for day trips or weekend getaways. Waiheke, is the best known and is only a 35-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. Waiheke is packed full of vineyards, walking tracks and beautiful beaches. The North Shore city region covers 120km of coastline and includes more than 30 sandy swimming beaches. Part of the North Shore’s appeal is that it is just a short drive from the city lights and downtown lifestyle of central Auckland, yet it has a real community feel and beachside character.

#

A short bus ride away is the popular family area of Mission Bay. Here, "The Promenade" is one of Auckland’s original beachside hangouts, and these days has cafes, restaurants, fish and chip shops, ice cream parlours, FREE wifi in the area, an iconic fountain and new kids playground. Oh – we forgot to mention a safe swimming beach and watersports such as kayaking and paddleboards, which you can rent. It has great views of the city and nearby islands. Auckland is set on three beautiful harbours and Rangitoto stands out with its distinctive symmetrical cone and super location just off the coast. It stands guard over Auckland and the views are spectacular!

Rangitoto Island is actually an extinct volcanic cone in the middle of the harbour that you can see from most parts of Auckland. There are walking tracks of various lengths across the island through stunning regenerating forest that will take you to the summit for panoramic views back to the city.

Times are tough? Not much money? (or you might be just a bit tight) Don't let that stop you getting out there and experiencing what the great city of Auckland has to offer -

30 things to do on the cheap!! 1. Spend $1 to board the red “City Link” public bus that will take you to all the main points of the CBD so you can get your bearings. 2. It is spacious and diverse. The Wintergardens are a feature of the Domain with the Auckland War Memorial Museum sitting at the highest point. There are formal gardens, duck ponds, large green open spaces edged by mature trees, bush walks and statuary.

Kids of all ages love to play. Auckland has some great parks, playgrounds and gardens where the whole family can walk, run, swim, climb, ride or picnic, get up close and personal with animals or just sit still and watch the world go by.

Cornwall Park - Greenlane Located close to the city with grazing animals. There is a large playground, flying fox, plenty of space and a cafe to replenish the energy levels. The Stardome Observatory & Planetarium are located here too. They run regular family events during school holiday periods, so check their website or letsgokids.co.nz for regular updates. Western Springs Park - Western Springs Bordering both the Auckland Zoo and the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT), two top family attractions, this is the perfect place for a walk or a picnic afterwards - playground included. Kids (and adults) love seeing the swans and ducks on the lake and roaming around the open lawns too.

Play Ambury Regional Park - Mangere Bridge Ambury is located in Mangere Bridge. It is a working farm, an important education centre and a birdwatcher’s paradise with an interesting volcanic history – all just 15kms from downtown Auckland. The farm animals at Ambury are family favourites. You will see sheep, goats, cows, pigs, pet lambs (in spring), chickens, turkeys, rabbits, peacocks and a horse. There’s a great walk along Kiwi Esplanade that takes you right to Mangere Bridge – a great spot for fishing.

Photo courtesy of Tourism New Zealand

Botanic Gardens – Manurewa The Gardens are located in Manurewa and feature plants from New Zealand and abroad. There are free guided tours, and on weekends you can take an inexpensive train ride around the Gardens. There is also a dedicated children’s garden and the Agent Ani Adventure Trail. Duck food is available for 20 cents to feed the resident duck families down by the lake. They also run regular workshops and exhibits for children during school holiday periods.

Te Ara Tahuna Estuary – Orewa This newly-built mixed-use path winds around the edge of the Orewa Estuary, taking in the best the area has to offer including mangroves, parkland and areas of cultural and historical significance. The best time to go is high tide, when you can cool off with a plunge from the jumping platform by the Hibiscus Coast Highway. Mangere Mountain - Mangere Bridge Auckland is famous for its volcanoes, and this is one of the best. Unlike Mt Eden or One Tree Hill, there’s no road to the top, so climbing it feels like more of an adventure. At the top you’re rewarded by brilliant views over across Manukau Harbour. Omeru Falls – Kaukapakapa A half-hour walk through this stunning reserve north of Auckland takes in streams, waterfalls and a historic pa site. A great place for an adventure with the kids.

Play PLAYGROUNDS Little Rangitoto Reserve - Remuera Located in the heart of Remuera, this popular park screams kid zone. With a circular swing, jungle gym, slides, flying fox and a skateboard bowl, your little ones are sure to be entertained for the day. That leaves you free to head to the Benson Road Deli to pick up the picnic supplies and find a spot on the grass. Little Rangitoto Reserve was once a volcano before it was quarried away, so if you’re one for history you might get your thrills exploring this spot. Allenby Park - Papatoetoe A hugely popular 10m tower slide for big kids plus play equipment for all ages including a sand and water play area and skate park. There’s also ample room to set down a picnic with restrooms nearby. Waterview Reserve - Waterview Take the kids on an adventure with water play features, slides, swings, climbing frames, sand, a skate park and learn-to-cycle track and more! With amenities like picnic tables, barbeque facilities and shady gazebos, it’s the perfect family day out for everyone. Snakes & Ladders – Farm Cove Next door to Pakuranga Sailing Club, it is a giant snakes and ladders game set into a hill. Spin the dice at the bottom and climb up the stepping stones. If you land on a ladder, climb up – if you land on a “snake”, (which is a wiggly slide), you slide down. A great twist on an old fashioned favourite!

Tui Glen Reserve - Henderson One of Auckland’s newest and most inventive playgrounds, the playground has a tree-top theme to reflect the landscape around it. That means high places where kids can get level with the trees, pyramid towers, a tree hut, and a dual flying fox so the kids can race their friends. Schnapper Rock – Albany The best thing about this is the water play equipment. Children get to use a hand pump to activate the water sequence down the manmade creek bed. Something different! Macleans Park Flying Fox – Howick For the older kids with too much energy, drop them off here for an hour or be the one to give them a push! The flying fox at Mcleans, Bucklands Beach Howick is superb! Wynyard Quarter – CBD Down by the wharf area, this new playground is themed around the sea and it will capture the kids imagination. It’s close by to cafes too, so you can grab that latte whilst the kids play!

Play Beaches - Aaah - This is what I’m talkin’ about bro!! We’ve picked out the best of the best; the must-see family beaches in Auckland.

Photo courtesy of Tourism New Zealand

Snells Beach Snells Beach is a perfect place for toddlers to play and poke around. There’s no lack of rock pools to explore, there’s heaps of flat space for little feet to run around (meaning you can keep an eye on them from your comfortable set-up on the beach), and there’s a whole stretch of water that stays shallow

Mission Bay Close to the CBD and with the convenience of shops, cafes and restaurants nearby. This is perfect when the kids just have to get their feet wet! Takapuna A long wide beach that is bordered by grassy areas with all the amenities. Go for a walk, have a game of cricket or touch - this has room for everyone. Parking is a bit scarce. Piha Beach This is one of Auckland’s famous BLACK sand beaches. Located in the Waitakere Ranges, it is a popular swimming beach. The scenery is awesome. Kelvin Strand Beach Almost at the tip of the Te Atatau Peninsula is one hidden treasure. The beach is a real gem lovely white sand, regenerating wetlands, and a large grassy park and playground. Waiheke Island Waiheke has some great beach spots, and all are relatively quiet. For families try Little Oneroa, which offers safe sheltered swimming and is close by to shops.

Located in the heartland of New Zealand, Hamilton is NZ's 4th largest city. Only 1 hours drive from Auckland, Hamilton is a safe, friendly, clean city and a great place for family holidays. By basing your stay in Hamilton, you are within a short drive to the pristine beauty of The Coromandel Peninsula, the superb sandy beaches of Mount Maunganui and the “Thermal Wonderland” of Rotorua (The Maori cultural capital of New Zealand), beautiful Lake Taupo (New Zealand’s largest lake), or a short trip to see the grandeur of the Waitomo Caves.

HANDY HINT If planning to visit Hobbiton, make sure you book!! The attraction is very popular and bookings are essential all year round. To avoid disappointment and not being able to get on a tour, ring ahead.

The city of Hamilton itself is flat and easily accessible on foot. There are many walking trails beside the river and the well laid out and manicured lawns and gardens are a feature. The mighty Waikato River winds its way directly through Hamilton, providing great activity options for a relaxing afternoon. Kayak the river on a guided tour or relax with a quiet stroll from the CBD along the river walks to the Hamilton Gardens at the southern end of the city. The gardens provide a fun day out for the whole family. The themed gardens transport you to a different civilisation at every turn, inspiring imaginations in both young and old.

Waitomo Located 15 minutes from Otorohanga, 1 hour from Hamilton and 1.5 hours from Rotorua and Taupo, the Waitomo area is famous for its limestone caves.

Out & About

Experience subterranean streams and amazing limestone formations as the guides explain how Mother Nature created this underground playground. Spellbound (p.36) is a personalised tour that has more glow worms than any other! Photo courtesy of Tourism New Zealand

Waitomo can be translated to the ‘stream which flows into the hole in the ground’. This meaning is reflected in its fantastic geological history and landscape, however, it also has a rich tourism and cultural history. As a region, it is one of New Zealand’s original tourist destinations. Today the caves continue to be developed to offer something for everyone with many tourism operators in the area. The countryside of the Waitomo District also offers many options for hiking, mountain biking and horse trekking. From lush green hills to limestone outcrops, undulating rivers, native flora and 30 million-year-old fossil, there is plenty to discover. Roselands (p.38) is the place to go to eat and has farm animals and activities for the kids to interact with. They’ll love it! Undulating green fields, tumbling waterfalls, spectacular rural vistas and of course, its world-renowned limestone formations and cave systems make Waitomo a destination like no other. The newly opened troll cave (p.39) is a delight for children to behold. They need to solve the problems and riddles as they progress through the cave - very Harry Potter!!

At the other end, they can opt for an adrenalin charged adventure caving experience lasting for either a few hours or a whole day, including black water rafting (tubing), abseiling, waterfall jumping and zip lining.
