Get out of Town!
Transport to other cities & towns Perth has an extensive bus and rail network that can move you to the suburbs and neighbouring tourist areas such as Fremantle and Mandurah, cheaply and easily. All trains leave from Perth Train Station which is located in Wellington St across from Forrest Place. The Mandurah line takes only 50 minutes from the city centre to arrive in the beautiful coastal town. Buses run all over Perth and leave from the Busport on the corner of Mounts Bay Rd and William St. Buses and trains to other areas of WA leave from the East Perth Public Transport Centre in East Parade. www.transperth.wa.gov.au

A little further out, the main country areas are all serviced by excellent freeways, so a day trip (or weekend) is just an easy drive away. So much of Perth is set up for families and we’ve gone and found the activities and events, discovered a few places you didn’t know about and organised some special deals at some of the state’s favourite attractions for you.

Don’t leave Perth without having... - Taken a ride on all the FREE CAT buses to get your bearings around the CBD (p.4) - Headed up to Kings Park, taken in the views and let the kids loose. - Gone for a ride along the Swan River over the causeway and back up the South Perth side. - Taken a ferry to “Rotto” to say “G’day” to a quokka. - Headed out to Whiteman Park for the day and visited Caversham Wildlife Park. - Got yourself soaking wet at Outback Splash (p.17) at Bullsbrook. - Visited the Aviation (p.10) and Army Museum to get a feel for what life was like for our troops. - Taken a boat to Penguin Island and learnt all about the cute little critters (p.26) - Caught a ferry to Sth Perth and visited the Zoo (inside back cover). - Headed for the hills and explored the quaint villages of Kalamunda & Mundaring. - Spent a day exploring the Hillarys complex. - Headed to Cottlesloe to have a swim, grabbed some fish ‘n’ chips and seen the sun set over Rotto - Visited the new Elizabeth Quay area and chilled on a Sunday. - Having done a guided tour of Optus Stadium

3. Don’t miss the Old Gaol, now home to the WA Museum. Check out the activities in the education centre and the displays. 4. Visit the Aviation Heritage Museum (p.10) in Bull Creek (costs a little).

Let us show you how to spend a day or even a month where you can see and do lots and spend nothing – (or maybe a little). So what are you waiting for? Read on, round up a posse and get out there and do it!! 1. Why not get your visit to the city off to a flying start with an orientation walking tour? Learn more about the history, arts and culture of Perth. All tours are free and are led by iCity volunteer tour guides and leave from the kiosk in Murray St Mall. 2. The statues on St Georges Terrace tell the history of the city. Get your photo taken with them all.
5. Head up to Kings Park and check out the awesome playgrounds, the DNA spiral tower, the million dollar view. Have lunch at Stickybeaks (p.43) 6. Head to the hills (and escape the heat) and check out the quaint villages of Kalamunda or Mundaring. 7. Go for a stroll through the beautiful English style gardens in Hyde Park in North Perth. You’d think you were in London. 8. Heirisson Island at the end of the Causeway has a resident kangaroo mob. Hop over and check it out. 9. Head to Cottesloe just before sunset and have a swim, grab an ice-cream and watch the sun go down over Rottnest – “A Million Dollar View” 10. Enjoy a scenic drive along the Rockingham Foreshore; why not stop for a swim? It’s a great beach for the kids, with shallow waters and protection from the sea breeze. 11. Take your bikes over to South Perth and ride the FLAT bike path on the river. If you feel energetic, do the exercise trail too! 12. Visit Herdsman Wildlife Centre in Wembley. A fun, interactive educational experience – gold coin donation entry. 13. Take a trip back in time at Galaxy Drive in Kingsley. $20 per car Tuesdays. Check the website for screening times. 14. Go for a picnic at shady Pt.Walter. It has a great river swimming spot and a sand spit for a leisurely stroll. 15. Perth has some ‘amazing’ suburban playgrounds. 16. Visit the ponds opposite the hospital in Mounts Bay Rd and get up close and personal with the state of WA’s fauna emblem - The Black Swan. 17. Follow the plaques in the footpath on St George Terrace. How many names do you recognise? 18. Go for a walk or ride around nearby Lake Monger - Ducks have right of way! 19. Catch some Harness Racing action at Gloucester Park, kids are FREE! 20. Watch birds and play on the playground at the Point Fraser wetlands in East Perth. 21. Sample some chocolate at the Fremantle Chocolate Factory at the new location in Bibra Lake. 22. Visit the Perth Observatory in Bickley. It offers day tours of the facilities as well as star gazing nights. 23. Take a ride on the ferry from Barrack St jetty to South Perth and stroll the streets, have lunch or even visit the zoo (inside back cover).

24. Walk through Fremantle on a Sunday and take in a spectacular show from one of the street performers. 25. Pop down to the new precinct at Elizabeth Quay. Situated on the banks of the Swan River which boasts a bunch of attractions including the island playground, the Water Park, public artwork, promenades, open spaces and food outlets. 26. Visit the Nostalgia Box Museum, which has a museum area as well as a gaming area where kids (and adults) can play a variety of classic and vintage games. 27. Check out Northbridge Piazza, which always has something going on. Whether it is the free flicks or kids movies on a Saturday night or festivals and activities during the year. 28. Enjoy some water fun at Water Labyrinth Forrest Place. The kids will love the interactive water sculpture, which creates rooms out of vertical spouts of water. 29. Visit the DFES Education & Heritage Centre housed in the original City of Perth Fire Station. Kids can dress up and try the equipment! 30. Check (p.58) and find out which council is running free concerts, festivals or movie nights. Kids love them and so does your wallet!

Right through the suburbs of Perth, there are stacks of parks, gardens and small museums displaying the heritage and unique history of the local area, state of the art aquatic centres and cultural precincts as well as kilometres of walking and cycling trails. Hillarys Hillarys Boat Harbour is situated 20 minutes north of Perth via the extremely scenic coastal road or by Freeway to Whitfords Rd. It is a destination in itself, with shops, casual and formal eateries and a safe swimming beach. It is home to the Western Australian Aquarium, and has plenty of free parking. It has a boat launching ramp and you can even catch a fast ferry from Hillarys across to beautiful Rottnest Island. They depart daily. You could spend an entire day here exploring everything it has to offer. Hillarys even has its own Resort Hotel! The area offers a great alternative to staying in the CBD or down south.

South Perth Enjoy water sports on the Swan River. Hire a kayak or hobie cat. The Canning River Walk Trail in Waterford leads through an exceptional area of natural bushland. A bike path runs right along the river foreshore or try the challenging and fun fitness trail.

Cottesloe Cottesloe Beach is what Bondi Beach is to Sydney and is a must visit in Perth, to watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean. The Shady Norfolk Pines, smooth terraced lawns and pristine sands offer the perfect setting for a lazy afternoon or family day out. Kalamunda Take a scenic drive from Kalamunda to Mundaring via the weir or down the Zig Zag! The Zig Zag scenic drive is one-way only, beginning on Wlliam St, Gooseberry Hill and zig zagging down the escarpment, taking in the fantastic views of the city and beautiful wildflowers. Visit the Kalamunda Village Markets, an authentic street market open the first Saturday morning each month. The Kalamunda History Village shows the development of local industries and services transport and domestic life from European settlement onwards.

Melville Point Walter is a fabulous place to hang out on that lazy Sunday afternoon or hot summer’s day. There is great river swimming, a sand spit to walk along, cafes and playgrounds. Wireless Hill Park is nearby and houses the old signal station museum, bbqs, picnic spots, an observatory and great views. Bassendean Success Hill Reserve (Seventh Ave) is right on the river and has plenty of shade. It is where the Heritage Trail and Cycle Paths begins. Also nearby Sandy Beach Reserve (end of West Rd) has shade, lawns and river swimming. The Rail Transport Museum has a superb collection of locomotives and historical memorabilia.
Armadale Visit the History House Museum to see what life was like 100 years ago. The Armadale Reptile Centre (see above) is in nearby Wungog. Learn all about the area’s reptiles. Another must see is Araluen Botanic Park in the Perth Hills. It has been a popular destination for Perth families for decades. The gardens are spectacular and extremely kid-friendly activities are regularly set up for the school holidays. Most parts of the park are accessible to prams and strollers and there are free barbeque facilities as well as places to purchase food and drink. Be sure to visit Champion Lakes for all your watersports. You can also swim here, canoe, laze upon a white sandy beach, have a picnic or barbecue.

The area is home to some of the city’s most intriguing historical sites, and many of the state’s most pristine and accessible nature reserves, that offer visitors some really unique experiences! Step back in time at the Wanneroo Museum, which hosts over 300 artefacts and historic photographs.

The picturesque Swan Valley offers something for the whole family just 25 minutes from Perth City, with award-winning restaurants and cafes, wineries, breweries and some of the best playgrounds and animal adventures abound.
Visit some friendly animals; there is wildlife, farm and reptile varieties which are guaranteed to please families both big and small. Whiteman Park has a bit of everything – animals, playgrounds, walking and cycling trails, picnic grounds and barbeques. So, just get out into the Swan Valley and experience what’s on offer all year round!
Start with the Great Valley Rally and the Amazing Valley Chase, the treasure-hunt-style dash around the region, with cryptic clues along the way and a certificate and prize at the finish line!
One of our favourite attractions in Whiteman Park is the Bennett Brook Railway. The vintage trains of the railway are operated by volunteers and run on selected days of the week only. Take a ride around the bushland and, if you are lucky, you may even be able to spot wild kangaroos hopping by.

Pop into one of the many wineries and cafes, pick up some picnic goodies along the way (they have some of the most delicious cheeses, smallgoods and fresh produce in the State) and head to one of the newest playgrounds or stunning riverside locations.

A central theme of Whiteman Park is the preservation of early Australian transportation history. Get up close and personal with marine wildlife such as penguins, dolphins, sea lions and an array of fish species in the marine park’s protected waters. If you prefer to go at your own pace, you can explore Lake Coolongup. Rockingham Foreshore Rockingham is well known for its shady, grassed foreshores and beautiful clean beaches. If you love the sun on your back and your toes in the sand, you’ll adore Rockingham’s many beaches. Mandurah is the perfect place to base yourself and take daytrips out to explore the Peel region. Pinjarra and Dwellingup situated in the Shire of Murray are also beautiful places to visit and boast a range of adventure activities. At Peel Zoo in Pinjarra, your kids can get close to a range of birds and animals. The Zookeeper 4 A Day even allows them to experience the life of a professional zookeeper. A must for all wildlife enthusiasts from 8-16 years. Visitors get to feed the animals, hold a snake and pat foxes and ferrets. The zoo itself has over 100 species of birds and animals including koalas, wombats, dingoes, reptiles, bengal cats, spotted quolls, possums, owls and Tasmanian Devils.

You can take a tour of the nearby Alcoa Mine and Pinjarra Paceway (see opposite) race every Monday year round, with free admission and kids activities in school holidays.

There is also a great pub by the river at Ravenswood for a meal or maybe a swim. Dwellingup is a popular camping destination and you can also hike, cycle or horse ride along the area’s many trails. Kids can even enjoy a tree top adventure ropes experience at Trees Adventure. (see opposite). They can challenge themselves on WA’s first tree ropes course offering 9 different levels and over 20 flying foxes.
North east of Mandurah, the Serpentine-Jarrahdale Shire forms the northern part of Peel region and offers some breathtaking scenery within the many forests, parks, rivers and other natural attractions. Serpentine Falls is a favourite picnic destination. With its cool emerald coloured waters surrounded by rocks, the falls are a perfect place to wile away a lazy afternoon.

The long-distance walking trail, the Bibbulmun Track, runs through the middle of town and the Hotham Valley Tourist Railway haunts the town every weekend throughout the year and is a magical way to see the tall timbers of the ancient forests. South Yunderup’s Adventurescape, a giant adventure playground, is a great day out for the entire family.

Located on the stunning turquoise banks of Geographe Bay, Dunsborough would have to have one of the most tranquil and magnificent locations in the world. Sparking calm, clear water and white sandy Dunsborough beaches are linked to town by lush green grass and shady paths.

The lighthouse is open every day between 9.00 and 4.30. To climb it, you must join one of the half-hour long guided tours that leave throughout the day (the last one’s at 4.00). Yallingup occupies a spectacular coastal location in the north of the Margaret River Region towards Cape Naturaliste.
WORTH A LOOK Yallingup Reef is protected as a marine reserve. In calm conditions the shallow lagoon south of the main swimming area is an excellent snorkeling spot with crystal-clear visibility and lots of fish to see even in the shallow water.

The houses of the town look out over the Indian Ocean from high on the slope of the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge, and down at the base of the hill you’ll find one of Western Australia’s very best beaches. Ngilgi Cave is located just outside the Yallingup townsite, an easy walk through the bush from Caves House. The cave features huge underground caverns and chambers, cramped tunnels and secluded fairy like grottos. Beautiful karst formations like stalactites, stalagmites, columns and shawls that are illuminated by soft coloured lights, creating a mystical atmosphere. The kids will love it!

Whilst the region does have a reputation for its wine which mum and dad will love, there is plenty of activities to keep the young ones happy. The Margaret River region has heaps of interesting kid friendly fun. The kids will love petting and feeding the animals at Sunflowers Farm (see opposite) and the tricky Yallingup Maze (p.38) is nearby.

Get lost at Amaze’n Margaret River - Maze, Cafe and Gardens as you wind your way through 2000 hedges that stand over two metres tall. There’s also an 18-hole mini-golf course where you can test your swing, before taking a rest in the gardens featuring species native to Western Australia.

Spend time travelling the winding country roads, dropping into taste test local wines, cheese, olive oil, venison or fruits. A lot of the wineries and breweries have outdoor playgrounds for the kids and plenty of space for them to let off steam whilst mum and dad can sample the local delicacies.
DID YOU KNOW The Margaret River region is known for its limestone caves. Well-known ones include Mammoth Cave, Jewel Cave and Lake Cave. Of these three, Mammoth Cave is the only one that you can enter on your own, the rest require a guide.
The Cheeky Monkey Brewery has an awesome outdoor playground and also an indoor play area for children to keep them occupied no matter what the weather. Whilst in the area make sure that you also visit Miller’s Icecreamery They produce all their own products on their farm and the family has been in the area raising dairy cows for 100 years! Delicious!

Climb the DNA tower, check out the views from the Walkway, take the littlies to the Ivey Watson Playground, go back to the age of dinosaurs at Synergy Parkland or try the Saw Avenue adventure playground. Kids will love exploring the tunnels and caves and climbing up to the fort at this huge nature based playground. BBQ’s, toilets and pavilions are available.

Esplanade Park Fremantle is heaps of fun! The open playground is shaded by giant pine trees and surrounded by a wonderful picnic area. It is adjacent to the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour and right in the middle of the Fremantle entertainment area. The space net is awesome!!
Perry Lakes Reserve Set within beautiful trees, large grassed area and lakes.. The park is sand based and has shade sails throughout. It is fully accessible for the disabled with ramps throughout the main structure and a disability swing. There are 3 areas to the playground with climbing ladders, monkey bars, bridges and more slides.
Yellagonga Regional Park Starts at Neil Hawkins Park in the heart of Joondalup. See if you can spot kangaroos, local wildlife, native flora and birdlife with a bushwalk along the banks of Lake Joondalup.
Glendalough Open Space A lovely little play area with parking directly next to it off the main road access.This area has swings, seesaw, flying fox, slides and numerous climbing frames to entertain kids of all ages.

It is also part of the “Wetlands Trail.” Popular with all ages, the water playground has recently installed shade sails, water canons, spouts and tipping bells. North Fremantle and Bathers Beach Easy access, great views of shipping lanes and Rotto. Bathers Beach is right beside the Fishing Boat Harbour. Enjoy something to eat and drink and let the kids play at the beach.
Rockingham Great foreshore location. Snorkelling in Shoalwater Bay. Mandurah Silver Sands and beside Seashells Resort is best or swim in the estuary!
