Hobart -

Out & About

Hobart is Australia’s most southerly capital and is one of the most picturesque cities in the world.

The imposing Mt. Wellington stands guard over the city which is hemmed in on all sides by the mountains and the mighty Derwent River. The city has a distinct nautical feel and the dominance of the sandstone buildings give it a real olde worlde charm.

Walk along Constitution Dock amongst the fishing boats on a spring day and you get the feel that you could be anywhere on the Mediterranean. The old warehouses were once factories that employed thousands making jam for IXL or packing apples to be shipped around the world. Now they house hotels and world class restaurants. As you walk along Constitution Dock amongst the fishing boats you get the feel that you could be anywhere on the Mediterranean. The old warehouses were once factories that employed thousands making jam for IXL or packing apples to be shipped around the world. Now they house hotels and world class restaurants. They provide a great centrepiece that fuses together the old andthe new Hobart Town.

The aquatic nature of Hobart means you will find lots of yachts and dinghys dotting all the coves and little bays of the city which are normally accompanied by grassy parks or playgrounds that provide a picture-perfect picnic spot.

The ever vigilant Mt. Wellington is always visible and is certainly worth exploring. The road is sealed and is kept in great condition. The whole family will love the breathtaking scenery and be intrigued by the history and uniqueness that Hobart offers.

Did You Know? The Burrow at the Botanical Gardens: The Burrow is a free community resource located underneath the visitors centre at the Gardens. It’s a space full of donated books and records, and also includes a large TV screen continually playing Tasmania’s best short films. Grab a beanbag and read a book.

Hobart Who said: “You don’t get something for nothing?” Let LetsGoKids show you how to spend a day or even a week in or around Hobart ‘on the cheap’ where you can see and do lots..... and spend nothing!!! (Or just a little). So what are you waiting for? Round up a posse and get out there and do it! 1. Take the drive up to Mt. Wellington (25 mins). One of the world’s truly great views. There is an indoor observatory. You may even see snow up there and build a snowman! There are not many places that have such a tall mountain overlooking their CBD like this! 2. Go for a walk through the historic Battery Point area. Check out the quaint shops and tiny cottages. 3. Walk down through Salamanca Place to get a feel for the “Old Hobart” – Go on a Saturday morning and experience the “New Hobart” as the whole area comes to life with the world famous Salamanca Market. Food and entertainment as well as stalls galore! 4. Explore The Constitution Dock area. Follow the trail of the interpretive plaques. Look for the statues. 5. While you are down there you may see the bridge turn and let the fishing boats out into the river – now that’s precision!

Worth a look! Want a peaceful place for your mid-morning coffee? Head to the Shot Tower in Taroona for freshly homemade scones, great coffee and sensational views. Don’t forget to check out their delicious Devonshire Teas for that afternoon treat - be warned, they sell out fast!!!

6. Head to the Tasmanian Museum – Check out the animal exhibits, the dinosaurs, the Antarctic Exhibition. You won’t be disappointed. 7. The Maritime Museum (costs a little) across the road tells of Hobart’s early seafaring history. 8. Anglesea Barracks just up the road in Davey St has an Army Museum with lots of artifacts. 9. Stroll the Botanic Gardens or take in one of their awesome family events. 10. Check out Bellerive Village – An old seafaring port. 11. Head out to Kingston via Sandy Bay along the coastal route through Taroona. 12. Head over the bridge to Rosny and check out the old farm and school house.

Eat Hungry? Ah, food mmmmmm!!! It’s time for a food break and you’ve come to the right place!!! Hobart has an abundance of casual eateries and “food experiences” that are perfect for a relaxed family meal or that special occasion. What is the local speciality??? Seafood of course!! Scallops are the local delicacy but it’s all great.

There are three main areas to try. The Waterfront, North Hobart and Sandy Bay. At Constitution Dock the seafood is fresh and cheap. For lunch or dinner, the “fish punts” offer plenty of choice, or take a seat at Fish Frenzy or Muirs Lower Deck, where kids are welcome.

If it is keeping the kids occupied whilst you enjoy your meal is what you’re after, then the Carlyle Hotel in Moonah or the Granada Tavern in Derwent Park, The Foreshore Hotel in Lauderdale or The Shoreline Hotel Howrah are the answer. They all feature kid’s meals, entertainment and have great playgrounds! Sandy Bay is another area with restaurants, take aways and cafes featuring foods from right around the planet! Try the German Bakerei - traditional pastry products.

Voucher

Up in Elizabeth St North Hobart overlooking the city (a bit too far to walk), there are restaurants, cafes and bakeries aplenty, with cuisines from just about every country on the planet. Fish 349 is a fave.
