New Norfolk

The old warehouses were once factories that employed thousands making jam for IXL or packing apples to be shipped around the world. Now they house hotels and world class restaurants. They provide a great centrepiece that fuses together the old and the new Hobart Town.

Out & About

The imposing Mt. Wellington stands guard over the city which is hemmed in on all sides by the mountains and the mighty Derwent River. The city has a distinct nautical feel and the dominance of the sandstone buildings give it a real olde worlde charm.

Hobart is the largest city and the capital of the island state of Tasmania. It has a population of over 200,000 people. It is the second oldest city in Australia (after Sydney) and was founded in 1804 as a penal colony. It has a mild temperate climate. Located at the entrance to the Derwent River, its well-preserved surrounding bushland reaches close to the city centre and beaches line the shores of the river and estuary beyond.

- Hobart The aquatic nature of Hobart means you will find lots of yachts and dinghys dotting all the coves and little bays of the city which are normally accompanied by grassy parks or playgrounds that provide a picture-perfect picnic spot. Hobart has an excellent array of new cycle/walk paths for those that like to get out and explore. There are a number of good routes utilising the waterfront that could easily take up the day.

The ever-vigilant Mt. Wellington is always visible and is certainly worth exploring. The road is sealed and is kept in great condition. In winter, it is often covered in snow and offers an “easy to get to” snow play experience. Explore Salamanca Place, a short walk from the waterfront, with its galleries, theatres, craft shops and restaurants in 1830s Georgian warehouses and on Saturdays enjoy the food and entertainment of Salamanca Market, Australia’s best outdoor market. As any parent will tell you, getting from A to B is the hardest part of travelling with children. Fortunately, in Tasmania, A is never very far from B. This will leave your family feeling unhurried, stress-free and ready to enjoy the state’s beaches, rivers, forests and wildlife parks.

Just 25 minutes from Hobart is one of Tasmania’s most popular destinations. A leisurely stroll through Richmond will reveal a Georgian town lost in time.

Voucher

Nestled in the heart of the Coal River Valley, Richmond was established as an important military staging post and convict station linking Hobart with Port Arthur. The village is famous for its elegant architecture, with beautiful heritage buildings dating back as early as the 1820’s now housing galleries, tea shops, craft boutiques and museums. With the rolling hills, Georgian-style buildings and cobblestone streets, even today, it is a quaint English village from the 1800s.

DID YOU KNOW?

Convict Ikey Solomon was an inmate at the Richmond Gaol in 1832, before being moved to Port Arthur two years later. It’s widely believed that Charles Dickens used Solomon’s story as inspiration for the immortal character of Fagin in Oliver Twist. Old Hobart Town (see opposite), right in the heart of the village has a scale representation of Hobart in the early days and offers a fascinating look into early life of the town.

Shopping in Hobart is diverse and is spread among four main areas The CBD, Rosny, Kingston and Glenorchy/Moonah.

Richmond houses Australia’s oldest bridge still in use. Built in 1823, it is a great photo op with grassy banks for picnicking and a local duck population. Be sure to sample the local chocolates (voucher p.17) and old fashioned sweets. Nearby the Coal Valley Wineries, Wicked Cheese and Coal River Farm give you a taste of the local produce. Peter Rabbit’s Garden is a recent edition featuring the storybook characters in an English garden setting.

Rosny is home to Eastlands which is a large multi level mall with national chain stores and local shops. It has plenty of parking and is easily accessed from all areas of the city. The CBD has Myer; many small arcades and street shopping in Murray, Liverpool and Bathurst Streets and Elizabeth St Mall (outdoor mall). Parking is good and is also FREE for the first two hours in the multilevel carpark in Argyle St. The Elizabeth St/Main Rd strip shops has restaurants, takeaways and shops from the CBD, through Nth Hobart, onto Moonah and finishing at Northgate Mall in Glenorchy. It has many kids clothing shops, computer stores, shoe shops and kid’s toy stores along its length, as well as pubs and takeaways. Down south, Kingston has the ever expanding Channel Court which is an outdoor and indoor precinct. There is ample parking and it is ever expanding!

Today Richmond offers visitors an insight into the types of buildings the earliest settlers lived in, were incarcerated in, prayed in and drank in. It has become one of Tasmania’s premier tourist attractions.

DID YOU KNOW?

WORTH A LOOK! Salamanca Market - Hobart’s most famous shopping experience is Salamanca Market! Held from 8am-3pm on Saturdays at Salamanca Place on the waterfront, hundreds of vendors sell hand crafted and homegrown arts, crafts and foods. Thousands flock there each week no matter the weather, to sample local delicacies, browse the stalls and listen to local musicians. It is Tasmania’s #1 most visited attraction with 25,000 - 40,000 people visiting every weekend. A very impressive number given the population of Hobart. Not to be missed!

The oldest Catholic Church still in use in Australia is the St John’s Catholic Church built in 1837.

Eat

Eat Food, glorious food!!! Hobart has lots to offer families looking for a quick bite to eat or a sit down meal.

The Ocean Child in Argyle St fits a similar mould. The Soho Hotel has kids eat free on Tuesdays and Thursdays, whilst Embers Restaurant at the Best Western has good wood fired pizza.

There are an abundance of casual eateries and “food experiences” that are perfect for a relaxed family meal or that special occasion. What is the local speciality??? Seafood of course!! Scallops are the local delicacy but it’s all great. Hobart CBD In Hobart itself, the Shamrock Hotel, (cnr Liverpool St & Bathurst St,) has a laid back and friendly atmosphere, with a roaring open fire, and wholesome food at family friendly prices.

Finding eateries with Kids Eat Free can save you a fortune on eating out. La Porchetta in Salamanca Place, the awesome Carlyle Hotel in Derwent Park, Granada Tavern in Berriedale, The Metz in Sandy Bay, the fantastic Hotel Soho in Hobart, and Club Hotel in Glenorchy all do Kids Eat Free and offer great variety.

There are plenty of places in Hobart both indoor and out where kids of all ages can get together to play and party. In this section we offer you a selection of both as well as our favourite parks and playgrounds. If you are feeling active, grab your bike and ride the Derwent, Clarence or Glenorchy bike trails (maps available from councils), play on one of the great beaches at Lauderdale, Clarence or Kingston, or run amok on a playground. The city is blessed with choices and here are a few of our favourites. Kangaroo Bay Parklands - Bellerive One of the state’s newest playgrounds, this entire waterfront area is undergoing a transformation with a new skate park also nearby. The playground features innovative water play machines including hand-operated pumps. There is also a picnic area, basketball hoop, urban table tennis table, exercise areas, and a net play area.

We’re fortunate that Tasmania is one of the most beautiful places on Earth; it’s compact, diverse, wild and accessible. Tasmania has 19 national parks and many of these are within a short distance of the major population centres of Launceston, Hobart, Burnie and Devonport. Mt Field, the state’s oldest national park, has a timeless appeal. Just about everyone loves a waterfall, and the beautiful Russell Falls is only a 10 minute stroll from the Visitor Centre on a level track that’s suitable for strollers. The road up to Lake Dobson takes the visitor through a forest of incredibly tall swamp gums. Walking through the tall pandanis that ring the lake is like entering a prehistoric world. In Mount Field, you will find everything from alpine lakes and vegetation to rainforests, thundering waterfalls, swamp gum forests and tall mountains. In Mount Field, wildlife is as diverse as flora. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a wombat, Tasmanian devil, echidna or even a platypus. For more information go to www.parks.tas.gov.au.

Located at picturesque Lower Sandy Bay the facilities overlook the beach and River Derwent. This playground underwent a major redevelopment in 2009 and is now probably the best playground in southern Tasmania with a huge array of play experiences available including: bouncers, slides, various climbing structures, sand play areas, a water pump, swings, things that move and spin and so much more. There is easy access to much of the playground and a dedicated swing for the disabled off to one side. This site has electric BBQ facilities nearby as well as a large enclosed shelter with picnic facilities and toilets not too far away.

HUONVILLE Franklin Port Huon Geeveston

Cygnet

Tahune Airwalk

Hastings Cave

The beautiful Huon Valley is one of the best drives in the state and it’s just 30 minutes from Hobart! Leaving the city and passing behind Mt Wellington, you’ll soon find yourself at Huonville.

Cygnet is the artistic centre of the Huon Valley and is home to many skilled artisans and crafts people. The township comes to life every January, as the popular Cygnet Folk Festival draws artists, performers, musicians and vendors of fine food.

As you head further south, the stretch between Franklin and Port Huon is one of the best you’ll find in Tasmania. If the weather is calm, the reflections in the Huon River are unsurpassed.

At Franklin, visit the fascinating Wooden Boat Centre and Boat Building School where shipwrights impart traditional skills to students from around the world. Over the road is Village Antiques of Franklin where you can wander through two stories of rooms filled with olden-day gems and ponder the lives of the people who once owned them.

At the far end of the valley past Port Huon is Geeveston and the nearby Hartz Mountains National Park. They have a great lolly shop (p.36) and has a range of shops, eateries and local attractions and a main street full of hand-carved timber sculptures of famous locals.

DID YOU KNOW? The Huon is both a major horticultural area, particularly famous for growing apples (83% of Tasmanian apples originate in the Valley), but also producing cherries, berries and stone fruit It is also a major source of seafood.

Set low in the beautiful Huon Valley, Huonville is wrapped in scenery and close to some of Tasmania’s most amazing natural places. With the Hartz Mountains nearby, it’s easy to see what inspires the local creative community and nature lovers alike. The town itself is surrounded by fruit orchards, farmland and the peaks of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. It’s an ideal base for exploring Tasmania’s far south.

Huon Valley Mid Winter Fest - If you haven’t sung to an apple tree whilst banging pots and pans by firelight lately, head to the Huon Valley to celebrate the regions apple picking history and join in the ages-old tradition of wassailing – basically scaring nasties out of the orchard’s cider trees to ensure a bumper autumn crop.

West of Geeveston is the Tahune Forest Reserve and the popular Tahune Airwalk. Here you can walk amongst the treetops past rare species found only in Tasmania. The walkway rises up to 48 metres above the ground and extends for around half a kilometre over the Tahune State Forest and Picton River. The Forest and Heritage Centre is a must for anyone interested in the state’s forests.

Continue farther south past the fishing town of Dover to the Hastings Caves. One of these, Newdegate Cave, is one of the world’s great dolomite caves containing vast chambers more than 40 million years old. After touring the caves, take a dip in the nearby outdoor thermal springs wonderfully warm, clear, naturally occurring pure spring water maintained at 28 degrees year round and surrounded by beautiful forests. The Adventure Forests of the region provide an idyllic setting for bush walking, fishing, bird watching and mountain climbing. Close to here you will find Ida Bay Railway that travels along the banks of Ida Bay. It terminates at Deep Hole and Elliott’s Beach where there is a shelter with BBQ facilities, picnic tables and toilets. Enjoy some time at the beach with a picnic or BBQ with family or friends and catch a later train back to the station.

Bruny Island is Tasmania’s premier island destination with a holiday adventure to suit everyone.

It is made up of a North and South Island which are separated by a narrow isthmus called “The Neck”. Access to the island is by vehicular ferry departing from Kettering. The trip takes 15 minutes and arrives at Roberts Point on North Bruny. “The Neck” has a timber stepped boardwalk that gives you some of the most spectacular 360° panoramic views of the Bruny Island coastline. There is also a penguin rookery located here. You can see these remarkable birds returning to their burrows in the sand dunes at dusk—little penguins making their way up the beach in tight groups and the shearwaters gliding in from the sea.The Reserve has an interpretation board. There are plenty of places to stay with accommodation ranging from friendly campsites to luxury beachfront retreats. Our favourite is Captain Cook Holiday Park (See below). Alonnah is one of the main townships of Bruny Island. It is approximately 35 minutes drive from Roberts Point. Alonnah is home to Hotel Bruny Australia’s southern-most pub.

Out & About

South Bruny has two general stores – at Adventure Bay and Alonnah – with Eftpos facilities, takeaway food and limited provisions. Adventure Bay has petrol and an ATM. There are no stores on North Bruny. A highlight is South Bruny National Park, with towering cliffs overlooking long sandy beaches, coastal heathland, underwater gardens of kelp seaweed and some amazing bushwalks to take it all in. Visit the Cape Bruny Lighthouse, first lit in 1838. Today it’s Australia’s second oldest and longest continually staffed lighthouse.

Whilst on the island, there is fishing, boating, great safe swimming beaches and there’s now also some great wining and dining options including a fantastic cheese factory.

The Mine Rescue exhibition tells the incredible story of the rescue miners Todd Russell and Brant Webb. The exhibition recognises the rescuers and the innovation that took place in the effort to retrieve Todd Russell and Brant Webb from the 950metre level depths of the mine. Included in the exhibition are stories of how the community united in the crisis, how the town coped with the influx of media, and Beaconsfield’s recovery after such a significant event. A multisensory simulation of the rock fall allows visitors to experience the conditions of the underground tomb where the miners waited for two weeks to be rescued.

Discover why Bass Strait is so infamous by visiting The Bass Strait Maritime Museum. You can learn about the shipwrecks, natural history and trade that make up Tasmania’s history. You can even take the helm and captain a 1910 steamer into the Mersey River or guide her through the heads of Port Phillip Bay. Home Hill, which was built in 1916 and administered by National Trust contains many interesting and historic mementos of Tasmania’s only Prime Minister, the late Joseph Lyons and his wife Dame Enid Lyons. Both are within a short drive of the city centre. One place not to be missed is the Tiagarra Tasmanian Aboriginal Culture and Art Centre located at the dramatic Mersey Bluff. The centre has preserved around 270 aboriginal rock engravings, of which a small collection of concentric circles, motifs or snakes, abalone

shells, emus, crayfish and other creatures are on display. A trip to Devonport with (or without) kids would not be complete without visiting the Don River Railway (p.62). This place has a large collection of working diesel and loco trains in Tasmania. Take a 30 minute tour on a vintage train, where the experience has recreated the essence of an authentic working passenger railway from yesteryear. After a history lesson the kids might be looking for something with a bit more action. Devonport has a newly refurbished aquatic centre, mini golf, a cinema complex plus ten pin bowling. Devonport’s weather can be a bit wild and windy but this does not mean you will wondering what you can do. Visit The Big Big House (p.62) and go on a rampage with a game of indoor Laser Skirmish, try Overhang indoor rock climbing or Jungle Gyms play centre.

The shopping is concentrated in the CBD at West Beach and there are also satellite shopping centres at Upper Burnie, Wivenhoe and Cooee. It has a dynamic cultural life, galleries, performances, exhibitions and community events.

The 20,000 residents enjoy a vibrant shopping district that spills onto the beach for seafood and coffee. Burnie has surprising restaurants and cafés to linger in.

HANDY HINT Nearby is Boat Harbour Beach awesome beach, playground and cafe. Dolphins visit the bay often and if the time is right - look for a whale!

DID YOU KNOW? The Burnie Pulp Mill was a factory in town which evolved over 75 years maufacturing high volumes of paper for world markets. In its hey day “The Pulp” employed 3500 people. There are plenty of places to stay in town. We would suggest the conveniently located and recently renovated Comfort Inn (see p.66).

Burnie is a port city with an industrial past that has reinvented itself as a vibrant and creative city. Burnie has been an industrial centre for most of its existence. Since the closure of its paper pulp mill, the city has taken a creative approach to promoting itself and the many makers who call it home.

You’ll find paper making, cheese tasting, ceramics, textiles, glass, print makers, painters, sculptors and lots more. Have a chat about what they’re making or see their objects for sale in the gift shop.

The scenic drives east and west of Burnie hug the coast and cross a patchwork landscape of farms dotted with boutique producers and coastal surprises.
