- Hobart

The imposing figure of Mt. Wellington is always visible and is certainly worth exploring. The road is sealed and is kept in great condition. The whole family will love the breathtaking scenery. The aquatic nature of Hobart means you will find lots of small marinas crowded with yachts and dinghys dotted all around the coves and little bays of the city that are normally accompanied by grassy parks or playgrounds that provide a great picnic spot. Head east to the Tasman Peninsula for a taste of convict life or south to the fabulous Huon area or catch a ferry across to Hobart’s playground, Bruny Island- Whatever your style or pace, Hobart makes a great base for exploring what makes Tassie great!

Hobart

As you walk along Constitution Dock amongst the fishing boats you get the feel that you could be anywhere on the Mediterranean. The old warehouses were once factories that employed thousands making jam for IXL or packing apples to be shipped around the world. Now they house hotels and world class restaurants. They provide a great centrepiece that fuses together the old and the new Hobart Town.

Hobart is Australia’s most southerly capital and one of the most picture perfect cities in the world. With towering Mt Wellington standing guard over the city, it has spectacular views, a real nautical feel and the sandstone buildings provide an olde worlde appearance to this modern multicultural town.

Wellington (25 mins). One of the world’s truly great views. There is an indoor observatory. You may even see snow up there and build a snowman! There are not many places that have such a tall mountain overlooking their CBD like this! You can see almost 100km on a clear day.

Hungry? Ah, food.........mmmmmmm!!! It’s time for a food break and you’ve come to the right place!!!

Hobart has an abundance of casual eateries and food experiences that are perfect for a relaxed family meal or that special occasion.

Photo courtesy of Visions of Victoria

There are pubs and cafes all through the CBD, but there are two main areas to try The Waterfront and North Hobart. At Constitution Dock the seafood is fresh and cheap. For lunch or dinner, the “fish punts” offer plenty of choice, or take a seat downstairs at Mures.

Up in Elizabeth St, Nth Hobart, overlooking the city (a bit too far to walk), there are restaurants, cafes and bakeries aplenty, with cuisines from every country. Fish 349 (see opposite) is a fave here. Sandy Bay is another area to try with lots of options and try the German Bakerei - traditional pastry products.

A GREAT PLACE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY TO EAT OUT! Open 7 Days 11.00am - Late 349 Elizabeth St, North Hobart Ph: 03 6234 7788 - www.fish349.com.au

Handy Hint! If it is keeping the kids occupied whilst you enjoy your meal is what you’re after, then The Shoreline Hotel Howrah is the answer. They feature kid’s meals, entertainment and have a great playground! (See below for great kids eat FREE offer)

Shop Shopping in Hobart is diverse and is spread among four main areas: The CBD, Rosny, Kingston and Glenorchy/Moonah. Rosny is home to Eastlands (see opposite) which is a large multi level mall with national chain stores and local shops. The CBD has Myer, many small arcades and street shopping in Murray, Liverpool and Bathurst Streets and Elizabeth St Mall (outdoor mall). Parking is good. Kingston has Channel Court which is mall sized and an outdoor precinct. Many food shops and eateries. The Elizabeth St/Main Rd strip has restaurants, takeaways and shops from the CBD, through Nth Hobart, onto Moonah and finishing at Northgate Mall in Glenorchy. It has many kids clothing shops, computer stores, shoe shops and kid’s toy stores along its length.

Salamanca Market Hobart’s most famous shopping experience is Salamanca Market! Held from 8am-3pm on Saturdays at Salamanca Place on the waterfront, hundreds of vendors sell hand crafted and homegrown arts, crafts and foods. Thousands flock there each week no matter the weather, to sample local delicacies, browse the stalls and listen to the local Andean band.

South of Hobart Huon Valley Despite its proximity to Hobart, a 30 minute drive away, the area retains the beauty, charm and heritage of a bygone era. Each township has a unique identity and history, something special to offer visitors to the area. Huonville sits on the banks of the tranquil Huon River, surrounded by the colours of orchards, and the peaks of the World Heritage Area. It is an ideal base for exploring far-south Tasmania. It is renowned for its produce, with road side stalls selling many of the in season fruits such as apples, pears and berries, for a fraction of the cost of supermarkets. Queenstown Queenstown was the nucleus of the mining boom at the turn of the century. •

Hedley Faul Park provides a great place for the kids to have a play, and is situated in the middle of town, with access to BBQ’s and public toilets.

Queenstown also is the starting point for the fantastic Bird River walking track to what is left of the town of Pillinger and on to Kelly Basin. Be surrounded by amazing rain forest and man ferns; plan for at least a 4 hour walk. Please check with Parks and Wildlife for directions and suitability as the road is subject to weather conditions.

The old open cut mine called the Iron Blow can still be seen at the top of the Gormanston Hill from the new walking platform that takes you right out over the old open cut. Whilst in town, make sure you include a climb up to the Spion Kopf lookout, an 8 min walk from the shops, that provides a great 360 view of Queenstown and the infamous Gravel Oval. Take a trip underground in a working copper mine, or visit old mines that are no longer in use.

Rosebery Rosebery is a town full of character surrounded by rainforest and waterfalls. Take a 10 minute drive out of town to Montezuma Falls. It is Tassie’s highest waterfall at 104 metres. It is an easy 3 hour return walk (4km one way), to see the spectacular falls, and walk across the suspension bridge. Stitt Park is a lovely spot to take a rest and maybe have a picnic lunch. There are BBQ facilities and shelters. Stitt Falls is further on and is quite spectacular when there has been a heavy rainfall. Why not take a look in at the Mining Heritage Centre? Situated at 26 Agnes Street, it provides a look at modern and old mining heritage in and around the Rosebery area with both old and new photos.

Worth a look! The Iron Blow Lookout is a major tourist development of a viewing and walking platform over the Iron Blow, an open-cut mine from the long distant past. Located on the top of “Gormy Hill” 10 minutes out of Queenstown, on the road to Hobart. Will you have the courage to walk out on the edge?
