Hobart -

Out & About

With its captivating history, picturesque waterways, rugged mountains and gourmet experiences, the city has something for everyone. Hobart offers a contrasting blend of heritage, scenery and culture, with world class activities and attractions nearby.

Nestled amongst the foothills of Mt Wellington, Hobart combines heritage charm with a modern lifestyle in a setting of exceptional beauty.

Hobart is Tasmania’s capital city and the second oldest capital in Australia, after Sydney. Located at the entrance to the Derwent River, its well-preserved surrounding bushland reaches close to the city centre and beaches line the shores of the river and estuary beyond.

- Hobart

Hobart’s cool climate makes it easy to unwind and relax without working up a sweat, its streets and laneways are picturesque and filled with little intricacies that give the city its character, and there are a variety of shopping options and mouthwatering cuisines incorporating the fresh local seafood simply waiting to be sampled.

Wander the Salamanca Markets The incredible Salamanca Markets held on Saturdays are located in a street filled with sandstone warehouses by the picturesque harbour. It costs nothing to enter and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells as you browse past rows of stalls, enjoying the buskers and open air. Of course if you feel the need to fill up on jams, cheeses, chocolates, mead or other delights they aren’t that expensive.

Hobart

Explore Salamanca Place, a short walk from the waterfront, with its galleries, theatres, craft shops and restaurants in 1830s Georgian warehouses and on Saturdays enjoy the food and entertainment of Salamanca Market, Australia’s best outdoor market. Hobart has an excellent array of new cycle/walk paths for those that like to get out and explore. There are a number of good routes utilising the waterfront that could easily take up the day. On your journy around Hobarts numerous waterways you will find lots of small marinas crowded with yachts and dinghys around the coves and little bays of the city that are normally accompanied by grassy parks or playgrounds that provide great picnic spots!

Huon Valley -

Huonville Huonville sits on the banks of the tranquil Huon River, surrounded by the colours of orchards, and the peaks of the World Heritage Area. It is an ideal base for exploring far-south Tasmania. It is renowned for its produce, with road side stalls selling many of the in season fruits such as apples, pears and berries, for a fraction of the cost of supermarkets. There is even an apple museum!

Each township in the area has a unique identity and history, something special to offer visitors to the area.

The Huon area of Tasmania is one of the state’s most pristine. Virtually untouched by development but only 25 minutes from Hobart, it features natural beauty, coastline, mountains, adventure and solitude.

Franklin Franklin is the next stop on the trail and is home to the Wooden Boat Centre and has several operators that offer tours exploring the nearby waterways.

WORTH A LOOK! At Grove, in an authentic Huon Valley apple shed, the Apple and Heritage Museum provides a comprehensive insight into the lives of the Huon’s early settlers. There is a free picnic area and heritage apple orchard to explore. Of course, there is also Willie Smith’s Cidery for a taste of the local brew!!!

28

Bruny Island

It is made up of a North and South Island which are separated by a narrow isthmus called “The Neck”. Access to the island is by vehicular ferry departing from Kettering. The trip takes 15 minutes and arrives at Roberts Point on North Bruny. The island has a population of around 620 and is deceptively large - being about 100 kilometres in length!! North Bruny is drier than the south and is mostly comprised of open pastures and light bushland. The Mirambeena Ferry departs from Roberts Point which is on North Bruny. The narrow isthmus joining the two parts of the island is called “The Neck”. There is a timber stepped boardwalk that takes you to some of the most spectacular 360° panoramic views of the Bruny Island coastline. There is also a penguin rookery located here. You can see these remarkable birds returning to their burrows in the sand dunes at dusk—little penguins making their way up the beach in tight groups and the shearwaters gliding in from the sea.The Reserve has an interpretation board and during peak viewing times. In contrast to the north, South Bruny is hilly, heavily timbered and includes large rainforest areas. It is home to the South Bruny National Park and large areas of State Forest Reserve. The townships of Adventure Bay, Alonnah and Lunawanna are also located on South Bruny.

Bruny Island

Out & About

There are plenty of places to stay with accommodation ranging from friendly campsites to luxury beachfront retreats. Our favourite is Captain Cook Holiday Park (See below). Alonnah is one of the main townships of Bruny Island. It is approximately 35 minutes drive from Roberts Point. Alonnah is home to Hotel Bruny - Australia’s southern-most pub. South Bruny has two general stores – at Adventure Bay and Alonnah – with Eftpos facilities, takeaway food and limited provisions. Adventure Bay has petrol and an ATM. There are no stores on North Bruny. A highlight is South Bruny National Park, with towering cliffs overlooking long sandy beaches, coastal heathland, underwater gardens of kelp seaweed and some amazing bushwalks to take it all in. Visit the Cape Bruny Lighthouse, first lit in 1838. Today it’s Australia’s second oldest and longest continually staffed lighthouse. Whilst on the island, there is fishing, boating, great safe swimming beaches and lots of fresh produce to sample. There are also tours that run daily to all the main points of interest by Bruny Island Safaris (See opposite).

Devonport & Central Coast Devonport is situated on the Mersey River is the home port of the vehicle and passenger ferry, The Spirit of Tasmania. This is an important link for all of Tasmania to the mainland and they sail daily to Melbourne. It is also the arrival point for many visitors to Tassie. (You should see them turn around in the river - fascinating and the kids will love it.) The town has a great coastline and popular walking tracks lead from the city centre, along the Mersey River foreshore parklands, all the way around to Mersey Bluff Beach.

Discover why Bass Strait is so infamous by visiting The Bass Strait Maritime Museum. You can learn about the shipwrecks, natural history and trade that make up Tasmania’s history. You can even take the helm and captain a 1910 steamer into the Mersey River or guide her through the heads of Port Philip Bay. It is an exhilarating simulated experience that everyone can enjoy without leaving dry land. For those that have more time, take two-hour sailing trip aboard the recently restored Julie Burgess Ketch. Burnie & The Northwest -

Out & About

Nestled on the shore of Emu Bay, Burnie enjoys a cool temperate climate with great beaches and is the main town for the area, servicing the West Coast, Cradle Mountain, Stanley, Smithton and the north west wilderness areas. For 75 years Burnie was a paper town, but mass production ceased in 2010. Manufacturing and the deep water port (particuraly the increasing number of cruise ships) keep industry humming but it’s the locally made cheese and whiskey that’s attracting attention. There are cafes, galleries and interesting shops in town and the hills hide beautiful parks, waterfalls, trout fishing and wildlife. Burnie is also host to two of the largest family friendly events in Tasmania. Join thousands of families celebrating New Year’s Eve on Burnie’s Waterfront and Kids in the Park on Easter Sunday at Burnie Park.

Gorgeous gardens like Annsleigh and Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden are just a short drive away and welcome visitors. Along the road towards Smithton and Stanley is the beautiful Boat Harbour Beach, where there is a stunning bay populated by dolphins, a great safe swimming beach, playground, toilets and a Cafe for a bite to eat - Put this stop on your itinerary!

Burnie & The Northwest

The new Maker’s Workshop will show you how paper is made and other artists will display their craft and tell you about it - Just one question How did they get that huge machine inside? There is also a gallery shop selling Tasmanian gifts, the cheese shop, a cafe, the Visitor Information Centre and paper making tours.
