Let us show you how to spend a day or even a week “on the cheap” where you can see and do lots and spend nothing - (or maybe a little). So what are you waiting for? Read on, round up a posse and get out there and do it!!

1. Take the drive up to Mt. Wellington (25 mins). One of the world’s truly great views. There is an indoor observatory. You may even see snow up there and build a snowman! There are not many places that have such a tall mountain overlooking their CBD like this!

2. Take a guided tour, or self-guided walking tour of Battery Point - within walking distance of Hobart’s waterfront - with its many historic houses dating from the first European settlement of ‘Hobart Town’. 3. Join one of the many walking tours (costs a little) that tell the story of early Hobart Town. The Visitor Information Centre will give you the details. 4. The Teddy Bear Shop in Collins St truly does have every bear that ever there was. For 37 years, it’s prided itself on sourcing rare, exclusive and artist-designed plush toys and the resulting collection is impressive. Remember: the visit is free but the bears are not!

6. Visit the old colonial house of Runnymede near Newtown. Show the kids what houses looked like before 60” flat screen TVs on the wall - Kids FREE.

- Richmond

Step back in time and visit Richmond, a historic village nestled in the rolling hills of the Coal Valley wine region. Just 25 minutes from Hobart it is one of Tasmania’s most popular destinations. A leisurely stroll through Richmond will reveal a Georgian town lost in time. Photo courtesy of Tourism Tasmania

Old Hobart Town (see below), right in the heart of the village, has a scale representation of Hobart in the early days and offers a fascinating look into early life of the town. Step into a cell at Australia’s oldest gaol (Richmond Gaol, 1825) and you might gain a sense of what the convicts endured.

DID YOU KNOW Convict Ikey Solomon was an inmate at the Richmond Gaol in 1832, before being moved to Port Arthur two years later. It’s widely believed that Charles Dickens used Solomon’s story as inspiration for the immortal character of Fagin in Oliver Twist.

Richmond

Nestled in the heart of the Coal River Valley, Richmond was established as an important military staging post and convict station linking Hobart with Port Arthur.

The village is famous for its elegant architecture, with beautiful heritage buildings dating back as early as the 1820’s that's now housing galleries, tea shops, craft boutiques and museums.

Step outside, and you’ll see their craftsmanship. The Richmond Bridge, built by convicts in the 1820s is a landmark. Get up close to the intricate detail, or hire a row boat and run your hands over the sandstone bricks of the arches. It is a great photo op with grassy banks for picnicking and a local duck population.

This playground underwent a major redevelopment in 2009 and is now probably the best playground in southern Tasmania with a huge array of play experiences available including: bouncers, slides, various climbing structures, sand play areas, a water pump, swings, things that move and spin and so much more. There is easy access to much of the playground and a dedicated swing for the disabled off to one side. This site has electric BBQ facilities nearby as well as a large enclosed shelter with picnic facilities and toilets not too far away.

Long Beach Playground Also known locally as The Boat Park, this area provides a flat site and good quality playground facilities. Located at picturesque Lower Sandy Bay, the facilities overlook the beach and River Derwent.

Play Bushwalks Photo courtesy of Tourism Tasmania

Mount Wellington/kunanyi The Mountain, as the locals call it, is an obvious place to go bushwalking. While the top of the mountain is often windy and chilly, stick closer to Fern Tree and you will find a range of walks such as the Silver Falls Loop — plus there is a park with a playground and public toilets right near car parking. From midway up at The Springs, you can find walks such as the Octopus Tree Walk, or a bit further up, the Organ Pipes Track. Knocklofty Reserve At the top of West Hobart and Mount Stuart is the Knocklofty Reserve. This bushland connects to Wellington Park and there heaps of walking trails of various lengths and difficulty, with the Summit Loop a good 4-kilometre walk from the car park at the top of Forest Road. Many of the tracks are accessible for prams.

Pelverata Falls is a slightly harder walk than Snug Falls and takes about two hours. Closer to Hobart is New Town Falls, reached at the end of Lenah Valley Road with access via the Lenah Valley Fire Trail.

Mount Field

Mt Field, the state’s oldest national park, has a timeless appeal. Just about everyone loves a waterfall, and the beautiful Russell Falls is only a 10 minute stroll from the Visitor Centre on a level track that’s suitable for strollers. Eastern shore walks Over the Tasman Bridge there are plenty of walks that are good for families. Risdon Brook Dam has a walking track around the dam, while for the more adventurous you can walk up the 7km of Mount Direction and take in some wonderful views. The Shag Bay Heritage Walk at Geilston Bay along the Derwent River is also good for families, and most of it is dog-friendly (on a lead).

28

Waterfalls Waterfalls make for a great attraction when walking and can be a good way to get the kids motivated. Snug Falls takes about one hour to walk to and it is about a half-hour drive south of Hobart. Not far from Snug Falls is Pelverata Falls in the Snug Tiers Nature Reserve.

The road up to Lake Dobson takes the visitor through a forest of incredibly tall swamp gums. Walking through the tall pandanis that ring the lake is like entering a prehistoric world. You will find everything from alpine lakes and vegetation to rainforests, thundering waterfalls, swamp gum forests and tall mountains. In Mt Field, wildlife is as diverse as flora. If you’re lucky, you’ll spot a wombat, Tasmanian devil, echidna or even a platypus, as well as a whole range of bird species. .

Port Huon The stretch between Franklin and Port Huon is one of the best you’ll find in Tasmania. If the weather is calm, the reflections in the Huon River are unsurpassed. Port Huon was once a busy trading port and the destination for international apple boats that transported and exported the region’s famous apples to the world. The original port remains and is a quaint reminder of the glory days of apple growing. Today, Port Huon is a departure point for boat cruises up the Huon River and is the site of some of Tasmania’s successful Atlantic salmon farms. It’s also a great place to stop and take in the views. Tahune Airwalk is located at the Forest and Heritage Centre near Geeveston, and is one of Tassie’s great experiences. The Airwalk takes you through the treetops of a eucalyptus forest at a 3 storey height above the forest floor, allowing you a birds-eye view of the tree species and forest life.

Nearby, the Hastings Caves State Reserve is a complex of caves and hot springs located about 90 minutes south of Hobart. There are 45 minute tours through the caves, although the highlight for kids can be the pool fed by the thermal streams. It is a steamy 28 degrees.

Close to here you will find Ida Bay Railway (inside back cover) that travels along the banks of Ida Bay. It terminates at Deep Hole and Elliott’s Beach where there is a shelter with BBQ facilities, picnic tables and toilets. Enjoy some time at the beach with family or friends and catch a later train back to the station. Farther on is Cockle Creek, the farthest south that one can drive in Australia, with its beautiful bay of sapphire-blue water fringed with pure white sand. Tahune AirWalk is a steel structure which is 620 metres long reaching up to 45 metre above the forest floor. The highlight is an extension over the Huon River (pictured above). Even though it is only 30 minutes drive southeast of Hobart, the fact that Bruny Island can only be reached by car ferry makes it less frequently visited than a lot of other parts of Tasmania. It is made up of a North and South Island which are separated by a narrow isthmus called “The Neck”. Access to the island is by vehicular ferry departing from Kettering. The trip takes 15 minutes. It is deceptively large - being about 100 kilometres in length. “The Neck” has a timber stepped boardwalk that gives you some of the most spectacular 360° panoramic views of the Bruny Island coastline. There is also a penguin rookery located here. They return to their burrows in the sand dunes at dusk. The Reserve has an interpretation board. Bruny’s coastal scenery is magical. There are countless swimming and surf beaches, plus good sea and freshwater fishing. South Bruny offers the steep, forested South Bruny National Park, which has some excellent walking tracks, especially around Labillardiere Peninsula and Fluted Cape.

Out & About

You can join an eco-cruise exploring the stunning coastline of the island. Visit the Cape Bruny Lighthouse, first lit in 1838. Today it’s Australia’s second oldest and longest continually staffed lighthouse. South Bruny has two general stores – at Adventure Bay and Alonnah – Adventure Bay has petrol and an ATM. There are no stores on North Bruny. Alonnah is one of the main townships of Bruny Island. It is approximately 35 minutes drive from the ferry and is home to Hotel Bruny Australia’s southern-most pub. There are plenty of places to stay with accommodation ranging from friendly campsites to luxury beachfront retreats. Our favourite is Captain Cook Holiday Park (See below).

WORTH A LOOK! The Mine Rescue exhibition at the Beaconsfield Mine site, tells the incredible story of the rescue of miners Todd Russell and Brant Webb. The exhibition recognises the rescuers and the innovation that took place in the effort to retrieve Todd Russell and Brant Webb from the 925 metre level depth of the mine. For kids there’s an animal hunt, gold panning, loads of interactive machines and cool stuff to operate and climb on. A multisensory simulation of the rock fall allows visitors to experience the conditions of the underground tomb where the miners waited for two weeks to be rescued.

From here you can look across the river and see the East Tamar Valley towns of Bell Bay and Georgetown. No need to drive all the way back to Lonnie though, as you can cross the river via the imposing Batman Bridge, an engineering feat that towers above the Tamar River.

Nearby is the Glengarry Maze (p.49) where you can “lose yourself ” for a while, before “discovering” more of what the diverse area has to offer.

As the port for Spirit of Tasmania I and II, Devonport is often described as a gateway to Tasmania’s northwest. The roads out of this major coastal city lead to the volcanic farmlands of the Mersey Valley, the beaches of Port Sorrell (and the Narawntapu National Park beyond), not to mention Cradle Mountain and the cave systems of the Mole Creek Karst National Park.

- East Coast

The pretty town of Coles Bay is a great base to explore Freycinet National Park with its spectacular coastal scenery that includes famous Wineglass Bay, rated as one of the ten best beaches in the world. The 10,000 ha park is home to Tasmanian pademelons, white-breasted sea eagles, red-necked wallabies - and in season offers spectacular displays of a wide variety of native orchids.

Before Swansea, look out for the convict-built Spikey Bridge (1841), known for its unusual construction. Reached by ferry from Triabunna, Maria Island National Park is known for its rich indigenous and colonial history. These days the main residents are birds, kangaroos and the underwater inhabitants of the 1500-hectare marine park. Humans stay in the settlement of Darlington, a good base for snorkelling or day walking to the Painted and Fossil Cliffs. There are no cars here, so discovering Maria’s stunning beaches, forests, grassy plains, wildlife and historic sites happens on foot or from the seat of a bicycle. Maria’s coast can also be explored from a boat or kayak, or by snorkeling or diving within the stunning marine sanctuary. With so much to see and do, the East Coast really is a great place for a family holiday whatever the season.
