Kids Rule!!!
Happy kids make for happy families. We all know that! But with the help of our 2nd Northern Territory edition of LetsGoKids, everyone will be a lot happier. We’ve found activities and events for after school, weekends and holidays. We have great family places to eat, where to shop for the kids, lots of places to go, things to see and even hotels and resorts that look after families just right! We also have vouchers, specials and deals to make everything that little bit less expensive (which means you can do more!). There are also puzzles, games, competitions and even birthday party ideas to keep the kids entertained.

Darwin is dynamic, different, diverse and constantly evolving as Australia's most cosmopolitan city. Its relaxed tropical lifestyle is enjoyed by a population of more than 75,000. The city's multicultural mix is particularly highlighted by its many exciting ethnic cultural festivals and weekly food and craft markets all over the city. Of course, Darwin's traditional owners, the Larrakia people, also bring their own history, culture, beliefs and customs to the mix. The end result is an ever changing, ever evolving community that accepts and welcomes everyone.

Darwin City Council provides a wide range of recreational facilities where families, young people and children can all enjoy Darwin’s outdoor lifestyle. FREEPS (Free Recreation and Entertainment for Everyone in the Parks) is a fun-filled program that gives both young and old the opportunity to enjoy and participate in free recreational activities and entertainment in Darwin’s local parks. FREEPS events are held on various Sundays during the Dry Season. Check www.darwin.nt.gov.au for details.
Did You Know? Public tennis courts are located in Parap, Nightcliff and Rapid Creek. They can be used free of charge and are only available for daytime use.
The Fun Bus is a mobile playgroup service jointly funded by Darwin City Council and the Northern Territory Government. The Playgroups are informal sessions where parents, carers, babies and children aged 0 to 5 years can come together in a relaxed and friendly environment. They provide children with an opportunity to have fun and interact with one another, whilst developing social and creative skills through play. It operates weekdays between 9:30am and 11:30am for 46 weeks per year between February and December. For six weeks during the wet season, the Fun Bus operates from a variety of indoor/undercover venues and then for the rest of the year it operates at various outdoor locations throughout the municipality. Check www.darwin.nt.gov.au for times and venues.

Darwin City Council has three swimming pools located at Parap, Nightcliff and Casuarina (see below). Darwin has hundreds of parks and gardens threaded throughout the municipality. East Point Reserve, includes Lake Alexander and is probably the most well known reserve maintained by the council. It is close to the city, covers over 200 hectares and is rich in wartime history and native flora. The council has many playgrounds throughout Darwin which are free to access and provide varying levels of activity challenge. Lake Alexander is a beauty at East Point (right on the water). Darwin's parks are excellent venues for everything from family get-togethers and festivals to open air meetings, functions and other corporate and community events. The Esplanade, Lake Alexander and the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens should be checked out.
Did You Know? Youth play a highly important role in the Darwin community, in fact, the Northern Territory is second only to the ACT with a higher than national average youth population in comparison to its total population.
Nightcliff Aquatic Centre
With an emphasis on items that encourage healthy, physical activities, the council is proud to offer a range of equipment options for community events. The council has a range of toys and activities available to use at your event, with everything from giant outdoor chess sets to inflatable belly bumpers. There is no hire charge with the exception of a small deposit, refundable on the safe return of the equipment. If you are interested in borrowing some Fun and Games equipment, or would like to know more about what’s on offer, please call (08) 930 0300.

The Youth Advisory Group (YAG) is a group of 15 young people, the council's Youth Services Team and two Aldermen. Members are aged between 12 and 20 years and come from different backgrounds and experiences, from various local high schools, community and youth agencies, education, training, employment and recreation groups. They advise the council on a range of issues and makes recommendations on issues that affect young people locally. Darwin also has great family places to stay, from five star to campgrounds, at reasonable prices and is quick and easy to get around (no such thing as rush hour here). So, read on… Check out the recommendations and whether you live here or are visiting – we're sure there is more than enough to keep you and your family occupied in this unique city.
The council also supplies Gig Gear free to community groups for young bands and artists who would otherwise need to hire a PA for events. Borrowing the GIG Gear is available to not-for-profit organisations, community groups, charities and young people for non-commercial events that are open to the community.

Visit › Darwin Waterfront The Darwin Waterfront around the Stokes Wharf area has undergone a massive facelift. You should see it now!! The old favourites in the area such as Indo Pacific Marine (see below) and the World War II Oil Tunnels are still there (voucher p.37), but they have been joined by an exciting bunch of newcomers. The area now boasts TWO world class aquatic playgrounds. The Wave Lagoon pool is awesome! (p.15) Swim, surf the waves on a boogie board, lounge around, grab a bite to eat. If the pace of the waves is too hectic for you, walk across to the Recreation Lagoon (which is safety netted) and lie on the beautiful grassy lawns, sit under a tree, build a sandcastle or go for a swim (AND IT'S FREE). Both areas are lifeguard patrolled, and the carpark under the Medina hotel has FREE parking for 2 hours, or it is an easy stroll from the CBD now the access bridges are in place.
Did You Know?

Visit › Cullen Bay Cullen Bay is located only 2 kms from the CBD. It's serviced by the city public bus and offers great views, restaurants, parks, beaches and shopping. It began life in 1983 and is now Darwin’s premier residential and entertainment suburb. The marina has international standard boating facilities and is worth a stroll just to check out the boats! There are cruise operators and fishing charters that operate from the marina, and we suggest the kids would love a ½ day fishing trip with Equinox (who have kids themselves) and will look after you just right.

locals! Batfish, barramundi, mangrove jack, mullet and even squid circle around under the lights of the restaurants. You can even ask for some fish food to feed them! The Boatshed Café is GREAT for families and even has a dedicated kids room, complete with DVDs. Cullen Bay Resorts are an affordable self catering option for families with great BBQ areas around the family friendly pools – they have great views over the marina too!
Cullen Bay ‹ Visit Did You Know?
To transform these mudflats into today’s marina precinct, the developers had to bring in: • 150,000 tons of rock bought in from Mt Bundey Station, 140kms away, to build the sea wall • 1,000,000 cubic metres of sand dredged from Darwin Harbour out beyond the sandbar, and pumped in to form residential islands and roadways • 400,000 cubic metres of land-fill bought in from a site in Stuart Park. Now that is a lot of truckloads!

Eat Darwin has an abundance of casual eateries and “food experiences” that are perfect for a relaxed family meal. The cuisine is heavily influenced by the proximity of Asia, with lots of different spices and produce used in the cooking. What is the local speciality? Seafood of course and in particular, Barra! This beautiful eating fish is everywhere. Grilled, fried, as a burger, in a curry, with noodles or rice, even the kids will love the taste. It will be wherever you go, so give it a try! Where To Eat? Stokes Hill Wharf has an amazing food hall that is open nightly (p.15). They have regular entertainment and even run free “raffles” during the wet season when you purchase a meal. You can sit al fresco or under cover and the kids will love the huge batfish (and sometimes a shark) being attracted by the lights and swimming around the wharf.

Litchfield ‹ Visit The Litchfield Area
Berry Springs Recreation Reserve
The Litchfield area is located approximately 40 minutes drive from Darwin CBD and takes in the main residential areas of Howard Springs, Herbert, Girraween, Humpty Doo, Virginia and Coolalinga (where the main shopping area is located). The area is mainly a rural one with a diverse range of wildlife. Most residents have woken up to see a mob of wallabies on the front lawn or had a possum on their roof. Dingoes are also a common sight.
Used by many groups as it is home to an open plan community hall, full size sports oval with cricket pitch, basketball/netball courts and a full size tennis court. The tennis court can be fully lit for playing at night (Bookings essential – Ring Bev Shuker on 8988 6266). The Reserve also hosts the very popular community markets on the last Sunday of the month all year round from 8am to noon, and is situated on the Cox Peninsula Road between the Territory Wildlife park and the Berry Springs Primary School approximately 12kms from the Stuart Highway.
You will also see this diverse range of wildlife on display in any number of the fantastic nature reserves and recreation facilities.
The Howard Park Recreation Reserve is situated at Howard Springs on Whitewood Road. It has two halls for hire and is surrounded by green, grassy picnic areas where you can relax and enjoy the natural surrounds. Great for a big family get-together! Contact Ralf Koberstein on 0438 891 373 for any booking enquiries.
Howard Park Recreation Reserve

Council has seven recreational reserves within the community. The facilities are administered by community members of the rural area to the wonderful standard they are today.
Come and experience one or more of these popular venues!
Social Beach Volleyball, Kelly Pool and Belly Dancing are just some of the activities held here. Alice Springs ‹ Visit Alice is often referred to as the “heart” of Australia. It is basically smack bang right in the middle of our vast country and 1500km from any capital city! (This means to go to the beach is a very, very, very long drive!!!) Alice Springs has a great pioneering history with it being the home of The Royal Flying Doctor Service, The School of the Air (p.46) and The Overland Telegraph Line. These all played major roles in the development of the outback and Australia in general. You are able to take tours of all of these. Modern day Alice Springs is dominated by indigenous culture, quirky events and loads of tourists who use it as a staging post to visit one of the wonders of the natural world – Ayers Rock or Uluru to the locals.

The Stuart Highway is named after John Stuart who was the first man to cross Australia from North to South. The highway generally follows his exact route.
Alice Springs
It has its origins in South Australia, beginning in Port Augusta where it leaves the Eyre Highway (Perth to Adelaide) and passes Woomera, Coober Pedy (half way to Alice Springs) and Kulgera. The SA outback desert town of Oodnadatta is a small detour away.
Coober Pedy is a unique town as a lot of it is underground! Churches, shops, restaurants, accommodations are build under the earth to escape the harsh climactic conditions. You can take tours of working mines and is a fascinating place to visit. Woomera sprung up around the “Space Race” of the 1940/50s. The Heritage Centre plays tribute to the role Australia played in missile and rocket development. It is a modern town managed by the defence department.
Discover the secrets of the desert In the space of a
few hours, see and hear the stories of the plants, animals, and local Aboriginal culture at daily guide presentations. Witness free-flying birds, see rare and endangered animals and enjoy a cinematic journey of desert evolution.

Only two hours south of Darwin, your Top End adventure begins in the Victoria Daly Shire, home to such iconic rivers as the mighty ‘Vic’ as it’s affectionately known and the ‘Daly’ – home to the biggest Barramundi in the NT. The Victoria Daly Shire sits at the crossroads to the Top End. Whether you are coming ‘up the track’ from South Australia, coming from the east coast through Queensland or scooting over from the Kimberley region of Western Australia, the Vic Daly region sits in the middle of it all. Communities include Kalkarindji, Pine Creek, Peppimenarti, Nauiyu (Daly River) and Timber Creek, and we welcome you to explore the unique landscapes, history and culture that the top end is so renowned for.
Katherine Timber Creek
Pine Creek Pine Creek is a peaceful town, with a prominent feature of the town being the Water Gardens. The Water Gardens contain an old windmill and tables where families can picnic, relax or take a leisurely stroll. The town also contains two museums, a Railway Museum that has a train on display, and the National Trust Museum that has old bottles, mining equipment, memorabilia from the war and the days of the old telegraph as well as very interesting displays.
Four Wheel Drive tracks abound, enabling you to discover the rugged country of the Gregory National Park, Keep River National Park, The Duncan Track, The Binns Track and the Savannah Way – not to mention the Humbert and Wickham!
Victoria Daly
Discover the history of early settlement as the Overland Telegraph line, early steam trains and gold mining opened up this last frontier of the north. Check out the historical displays in Pine Creek. Visitors can stop for lunch at Mayse’s Café, or have dinner at the Lazy Lizard Tavern or the Pine Creek Hotel. There is the Enterprise Pit lookout showing a large open-cut disused gold mine pit, and mine shafts that are fenced to keep children from falling in. The town is well known for birdwatching opportunities as it is home to the Hooded Parrot which is endemic to a small area including Pine Creek. Attractions include the nearby Copperfield Dam which is a great place to swim and have a family picnic and has picnic tables and toilet facilities, or further up the road is Umbrawarra Gorge which has shallow pools for swimming and a beautiful tranquil feel. Visitors can drive the “Goldfield’s Loop” and discover the Grove Hill pub which is filled with many artifacts and pieces of interest as well as there being other historic attractions throughout the Goldfields Loop. Pine Creek is a convenient place to stay and is regarded as a gateway to the Kakadu National Park and Edith Falls as well as providing close access to the nearby Moline Rock Hole, a secluded waterhole with its own waterfall surrounded by ferns and rocks.
Victoria Daly ‹ Visit Umbrawarra Gorge This gorge is located 22km from Pine Creek. It features swimming holes with sandy beaches sheltered by the steep red gorge walls. The first group of deep swimming pools is about fifteen minutes walk from the car park.
The Daly River “The Daly” as the locals fondly refer to it, is famous for its large barramundi and has proven to be one of the most popular waterways for recreational fishing and boating. There are two major annual fishing competitions on the Daly – the “Barra Classic” and the “Barra Nationals”. A number of properties along the river offer camping and accommodation facilities, food, fuel, boat hire, fishing tours and river access.
The Mighty Victoria River The Victoria River is a mecca for fishing and produces some of the Territory’s best and biggest Barramundi. “Barra” can be caught all year round but the best time is on a neap tide, between late March to late May – coinciding with the end of the monsoon season.
WARNING! It is important to remember that Estuarine Crocodiles also inhabit these waters, so please observe all safety precautions.
Timber Creek
Did You Know? Gregory’s Tree is located 15km northwest of Timber Creek. This large boab tree stands at the campsite of the early explorer Augustus Charles Gregory’s North Australian Expedition which was undertaken between October 1855 and July 1856. Inscribed in the tree by Gregory are the expedition dates. The tree also has special significance to the local Ngaringman Aboriginal people and is registered as a sacred site.

Victoria Daly
Timber Creek was named in 1855 when the explorer Augustus Gregory used timber from the banks of the creek to repair his expedition’s boat. The first inhabitants were the Ngaliwurra and Nungali Aboriginal people, descendants of whom still live in Timber Creek. Today, this small town has a range of accommodation, activities and other facilities for the traveller. Walk along the Heritage Trail to see wildlife, historic sites and pioneer’s graves.
