Weather The Top End has lots of sunshine all year. Remember the Wet season is November to April and the Dry season May to October. During January and February monsoon weather dumps heavy afternoon and overnight rain, which makes it quite humid but means you will get to see the beautiful waterfalls and lush tropical growth. Average temperatures range from 24° – 38°.

Worth a look!

Darwin has few dedicated kid’s clothing and toy/gift shops. Kid’s Grotto and Little Rompers are two that stand out. Take advantage of their discount offers on P.35 and 36 when looking for baby gear or that next gift!

29 Sep – 7 Oct Mid-Semester Break 15 Dec – 29 Jan 2013 Christmas Holidays

The Red Centre has very little rain and very low humidity throughout the year. Nights can be much colder than further north (lowest on record for Alice Springs is -7.8°!), but generally winter ranges from 3° – 20° and summer 20° – 35°.

Time The NT is on Australian Central Standard Time (ACST). They are ½ an hour behind Eastern States and they don't have daylight savings time so become 1½ hours behind from October to March. The NT is on the same time as Adelaide and is 1 1/2 hours ahead of Perth.

Darwin Darwin is a vibrant city with many community, recreational and social activities available for its residents and visitors. Its relaxed tropical lifestyle is enjoyed by a population of more than 75,000. The city’s multicultural mix is particularly highlighted by its many exciting ethnic cultural festivals and weekly food and craft markets all over the city. Of course, Darwin’s traditional owners, the Larrakia people, also bring their own history, culture, beliefs and customs to the mix. The end result is an ever changing, ever evolving community that accepts and welcomes everyone. Darwin has hundreds of parks and gardens threaded throughout the municipality. East Point Reserve includes Lake Alexander and is probably the most well known reserve maintained by the City of Darwin. It is close to the city, covers over 200 hectares and is rich in wartime history and native flora. The City of Darwin has many playgrounds throughout Darwin which are free to access and

provide varying levels of activity challenge. Lake Alexander is a beauty at East Point (right on the water). The other major regional playgrounds are located in Anula and Jingili. Darwin’s parks are excellent venues for everything from family get-togethers and festivals to open air meetings, functions and other corporate and community events. Bicentennial Park at The Esplanade, Lake Alexander and the Jingili Water Gardens should be checked out. The City of Darwin has three swimming pools located at Parap, Nightcliff and Casuarina (p.12).

Spend an afternoon strolling through the George Brown Botanical Gardens. It is only a short walk from the city and there is a visitor centre that has maps and info.

Did You Know?

After cyclone Tracy hit Darwin in 1974 only 400 of the city’s 11,200 homes were left standing 7.

Check out the new exhibits at the State Library (cnr Bennett & Mitchell Sts). They change regularly and they’re not just about books!

8.

The NT Museum and Art Gallery has great indigenous artefacts, arts and demonstrations. The recreation of the noise and power generated by Cyclone Tracy has to be experienced to be believed.

9.

Drive or ride to Charles Darwin N.P which is only 5km from the city and learn about the plants and animals native to the area from a knowledgeable ranger on one of their regular “talk sessions”

Darwin Waterfront The Darwin Waterfront around the Stokes Hill Wharf area has undergone a massive facelift. You should see it now!! The old favourites in the area such as Indo Pacific Marine (voucher p.36) and the World War II Oil Tunnels are still there (voucher p.33), but they have been joined by an exciting bunch of newcomers. The area now boasts TWO world class aquatic playgrounds. The Wave Lagoon pool is awesome! (see below) Swim, surf the waves on a boogie board, lounge around or grab a bite to eat. If the pace of the waves is too hectic for you, walk across to the Recreation Lagoon, which is safety netted, (so you can swim without getting eaten) and lie on the beautiful grassy lawns, sit under a tree, build a sandcastle or go for a swim (AND IT’S FREE).

Did You Know?

There is an interpretative trail to the wharf beginning at the top of Harry Chan Drive and winding its way down the hill to the start of the wharf. It tells the story of arriving into Darwin by sea in days gone by.

Both areas are lifeguard patrolled, and the carpark under the Medina hotel has FREE parking for 2 hours, or it is an easy stroll from the CBD now the access bridges are in place and they lead you straight up into the Smith St mall!

The new precinct has recently seen shops and eateries popping up. The Coffee Club is a relaxing place to meet and grab lunch. It’s located next to the access elevators. Wild Burger and Trampoline offer cool snacks that kids love and are open evenings! There is an awesome surf shop (Rush) an Irish Pub, restaurants for all tastes, whilst the ladies are catered for with a hairdresser and day spa. Across the water at Stokes Hill Wharf, there is a “foodies” paradise awaiting every night. Local and international foods - Crocodile, barra, emu and all the Aussie fares as well as Chinese,Thai, Indonesian and all your favourite Asian flavours. Entertainment, competitions and a second to none outdoor setting make this a great (and inexpensive) family gathering place. John Lort Stokes would be proud!

Waterfront Wave Lagoon – open 7 days a week, 10am – 6pm with lifeguards on patrol. Entry fee applies. Waterfront Recreation Lagoon – lifeguards on patrol 7 days a week from 9am – 6pm. Entry is free. Visit our website for regular events and school holiday activities.

- Cullen Bay Cullen Bay is located only 2 kms from the CBD. It’s serviced by the city public bus and offers great views, restaurants, parks, beaches and shopping. The main feature of this popular location is the magnificent Cullen Bay Marina, being home to over 250 vessels encompassed by some of the best restaurants that Darwin has to offer, and fringed by Darwin’s premium residential suburb. Beginning life in 1983, the marina has international standard boating facilities and is worth a stroll just to check out the boats! Being in a typically tropical environment and subject to severe cyclones and weather extremes, Cullen Bay Marina (a man made facility) has been uniquely designed to protect its occupants against such natural elements thanks to its locked waterway and huge man made seawalls.

Did You Know?

To transform these mudflats into today’s marina precinct, the developers had to bring in: • 150,000 tons of rock from Mt Bundey Station, 140kms away, to build the sea wall • 1,000,000 cubic metres of sand dredged from Darwin Harbour out beyond the sandbar, and pumped in to form residential islands and roadways • 400,000 cubic metres of land-fill from a site in Stuart Park. Now that is a lot of truckloads!

Cullen Bay

There are cruise operators and fishing charters that operate from the marina, and we suggest the kids would love a ½ day fishing trip with Equinox

(who have kids themselves) and will look after you just right. Cullen Bay Resorts (see below) are an affordable self catering option for families with great BBQ areas around the family friendly pools they have great views over the marina too!

LetsGoKids Northern Territory 2012

Cullen Bay Handy Hint If you are lucky enough to be there when a boat is entering or leaving, you will see the unique “lock system” in action. Because of Darwin’s massive tide shifts, this is necessary to keep water in the marina, and it also provides safe harbour from cyclones!

Cullen Bay Marina Precinct has a variety of services including hair and beauty salons, retail outlets for souvenirs, books, gifts and artworks, a marine chandlery, boat charter operators that offer both fishing and sightseeing/sunset cruises, health and gym facilities, a laundromat, a ferry terminal with services to both Mandorah and Tiwi Islands, and of course a host of Darwin’s best restaurants.Whilst in Cullen Bay make sure mum ventures to Cullen Bay Day Spa (see below) where the girls will make her feel welcome, pampering her and soothing away all the worries. A new innovation is “Yummy Mummy’s” which is run on Mondays and mum can bring the little ones and have them cared for by NT Babysitting whilst she has her treatment – Now there are no excuses not to spoil her!!

FEMALE MALE SPA BEAUTY COSMETIC

The Boardwalk is open to the public and is the perfect place to soak up the serenity of the Marina views as you leisurely enjoy the comings and goings of many luxurious private yachts, fishing boats and sunset cruise charter boats.

At night, the locals come out to play – the marina based locals! Batfish, barramundi, mangrove jack, mullet and even squid circle around under the lights of the restaurants. The Boatshed Café is GREAT for families and even has a dedicated kids room, complete with DVDs. You can even ask for some fish food to feed them! With so much to do, it’s not hard to see why Cullen Bay is such a drawcard to locals and tourists alike.

- Alice Springs The heart of Australia - year round blue skies, stunning landscapes and a vibrant, diverse community That’s Alice Springs!

AUDIO TRAVEL GUIDES Alice Springs to Uluru (160 min) West MacDonnell Ranges (80 min)

It is the town that everybody associates with “The Outback,” and it is a long way ‘outback’! It is basically smack bang right in the middle of our vast country and 1500km from any capital city! (This means to go to the beach is a very, very, very, long drive.) It is located in a land of extremes - from scorching summer days to winter nights where temperatures can fall well below zero and frost covers the ground. Rainfall patterns here are also extremely variable – from long dry periods of no rain at all, to flash floods that send frothing torrents along ordinarily dry river beds.

The Road to the NT through SA The Stuart Highway is named after John Stuart who was the first man to cross Australia from North to South. The highway generally follows his exact route. It has its origins in South Australia, beginning in Port Augusta where it leaves the Eyre Highway (Perth to Adelaide) and passes Woomera, Coober Pedy (half way to Alice Springs) and Kulgera. The SA outback desert town of Oodnadatta is a small detour away.

Woomera sprung up around the “Space Race” of the 1940/50s. The Heritage Centre plays tribute to the role Australia played in missile and rocket development. It is a modern town managed by the defence department.
