BE CROCWISE when you’re near the water

Crocodiles love the Top End! They can be found living in all kinds of waterways shallow ones, deep ones, ones with lilies on top, muddy ones, and ones where we like to fish and swim. Crocs are common. Crocodiles can be found in any Top End waterway at any time because crocs move around. They might be looking for food, a mate or new territory. So be careful when you’re near the water because crocs are deadly. They can grow really big and are excellent hunters. Some deadly features include: * Big powerful jaws that snap shut * Another set of eyelids to help see underwater * A great sense of smell * Ability to sense movement in the water through their skin * A strong tail to move quickly in and out of water So remember to BE CROCWISE if you’re near the water and only swim in managed swimming areas. Warning signs are there for your safety.

Out & About

Darwin Darwin is a vibrant city with many community, recreational and social activities available for its residents and visitors. Photo courtesy NT Visual Library

Darwin is the ‘capital’ of northern Australia and is closer to Jakarta than it is to Canberra and closer to Singapore than it is to Melbourne, so it’s no surprise that Darwin looks outward to Asia as much as it looks inland to the rest of Australia. It has a relaxed tropical lifestyle highlighted by its many exciting ethnic cultural festivals and weekly food and craft markets all over the city. Photo courtesy NT Visual Library

The warm, tropical climate of Darwin and its surrounding area is characterised by two distinct seasons with tell-tale titles: the ‘Wet’and the ‘Dry’. The Wet season, spanning from November until April, is characterised by high levels of humidity followed by monsoonal rains and storms. The ‘Dry’ season, from May until October, is characterised by warm, dry sunny days and cool nights.

Out & About

Darwin Present day Darwin was founded in 1869. The harbour had been discovered back in 1839 by John Lort Stokes aboard the Beagle, who named it Port Darwin after former shipmate, Charles Darwin.

DID YOU KNOW

The City of Darwin provides a wide range of recreational facilities where families, young people and children can all enjoy Darwin’s outdoor lifestyle.

Darwin was named after Charles Darwin, known as theFather of Evolution’ and famed botanist. His friend was John Lort Stokes (after whom the wharf is named) who named the city in his honour.

In Darwin you can take things as fast or as slow as you like. From bushwalks and suburban markets to being submerged with saltwater crocodiles, it really is your choice in this tropical city.

On 19 February 1942 an unprepared Darwin was devastated by Japanese bombing. Despite 58 further raids, Darwin rose to the challenge, becoming a major forward base for the Pacific Campaign. In total Darwin was attacked 64 times during the war and 243 people lost their lives; it was the only place in Australia to suffer prolonged attack. Discover WWII stories in the ruins at East Point Military Museum and the Oil Storage Tunnels. Having been almost entirely rebuilt twice, once due to the air raids during the War and again after being devastated by Cyclone Tracy in 1974, Darwin is now one of Australia’s most modern capital cities.

DID YOU KNOW Public tennis courts are located in Parap, Nightcliff and Rapid Creek. They can be used free of charge and are only available for daytime use. The City of Darwin has three swimming pools located at Parap, Nightcliff and Casuarina.

Darwin has developed into a thriving, vibrant place, renowned for its colourful characters and large variety of cafes, restaurants, pubs and licenced sporting clubs. It is also the entry point to some of the world’s greatest natural and cultural attractions, that are located within a two to three hour drive from the capital. They can be experienced year round, although the ‘wet’ means they are inaccessible at times.

Of course, Darwin’s traditional owners, the Larrakia people, also bring their own history, culture, beliefs and customs to the mix. The end result is an ever changing, ever evolving community that accepts and welcomes everyone.

Darwin literally is a HOT destination. While Aussies in southern parts of Australia are all rugged up on the couch under a blanket in their winter woolies, those in Darwin are basking in the warmth of the sun. It’s the perfect winter getaway!

Fast Fact After cyclone Tracy hit Darwin in 1974 only 400 of the city’s 11,200 homes were left standing.

Eat Darwin has an abundance of casual eateries and “food experiences” that are perfect for a relaxed family meal. The cuisine is heavily influenced by the proximity of Asia, with lots of different spices and produce used in the cooking. What is the local speciality? Seafood of course and in particular, Barra! This beautiful eating fish is everywhere. Grilled, fried, as a burger, in a curry, with noodles or rice, even the kids will love the taste. You’ll also find other authentic NT cuisine like mud crabs, buffalo, kangaroo, camel and crocodile. You will see these on the menu wherever you go, so give em a try! Where to Eat? Stokes Hill Wharf has an amazing food hall that is open nightly. You can sit al fresco or under cover and the kids will love the huge batfish (and sometimes a shark) being attracted by the lights and swimming around the wharf. Nearby the Darwin Waterfront complex has restaurants and take away to suit all tastes. Hot Tamale Mexican Restaurant, Wharf One Food and Wine and the new Precinct are worth a look. Or get your fix of Pho at the modern family friendly Chow Asian restaurant. The meals at Fiddlers Green are huge!

The Darwin Sailing Club and the Trailer Boat Club in Fannie Bay have million dollar views as the sun goes down and you can sit on the shady grassed area overlooking the water. Casual bistro setting. The food is great, the setting even better. The Trailer Boat Club has playground, swimming pool, beach and soft sand for the kids to play on.

Mitchell Street in the city has many outlets for a quick lunch or a sit down dinner. There are sandwich shops, noodles, Italian, fish and chips and Thai. There are several pubs as well. For the best barra in town, try the Barra Bar.

NOT TO BE MISSED Of course one family dining experience not to be missed is the Mindil Beach Markets on a Thursday and Sunday during the dry season. It is all takeaway, but there is food from every country imaginable. You will find something for everyone at a reasonable price.

Shop Darwin’s shopping experience of choice, is the good old fashioned open air market. There seems to be markets everywhere that sell clothes, jewellery, art & craft, provide massages and of course, sell food! This is your chance to really find out what makes the Top End tick. You will find them in Nightcliff on Sunday morning, Parap on Saturday morning, Rapid Creek on Sunday morning and Palmerston on Friday night.

The original Darwin CBD area is centred around the Smith St Mall, with new Coles and Woolworths supermarkets only a stones throw away. Food malls, clothes, a newsagent, chemists and tourist orientated shops dominate this area.

At the famous Mindil Beach Sunset Markets, (held on Sundays and Thursdays from Apr - Oct) sample international cuisine from some 60 food stalls - Sri Lankan, Turkish, Greek, Cambodian, Japanese and eat on the beach as the sun sinks into the ocean.

There are three major shopping centres. In the City, at Casuarina and at Palmerston with many other shopping centres located throughout the suburbs. These centres boast a huge array of both large and specialty shops from the major supermarket chains through to small boutiques.

After dinner, find the perfect gift among stalls of art and craft, then relax with a local ice-cream or mango smoothie as fire twirlers, musicians and street performers entertain the crowds. Mix it with locals and travellers and feel the buzz of arts, crafts and music.

Litchfield National Park The 1,500 sq km2 park is an easy 1 1/2 hr from Darwin. It contains several types of typical Top End habitats including lush monsoon forests, termite mounds, unusual rock formations, waterfalls and cascades. During monsoon season, four major waterfalls thunder from the cliffs to tropical rock pools metres below. During the rest of the year the waterfalls flow more gently, making the waterholes perfect spots for a cool dip.

Darwin Waterfront Wave Lagoon - Has a sensational wave pool and a stinger netted swimming lagoon. Both are lifeguard patrolled and have change facilities with toilets. There is also plenty of shade cover to relax on the lush lawns.

Charles Darwin National Park Just a short drive from the city, this park was developed to show visitors the rich mangrove habitats of Darwin Harbour. Relics of Darwin’s involvement in WWII can also be seen here. These reinforced concrete bunkers were used for safe storage of munitions during the wartime action. Kakadu National Park The largest in Australia. It is situated 250km from Darwin on the Arnhem Highway. Renowned internationally for its natural and cultural wonders, Kakadu has one of the highest concentrated areas of Aboriginal rock art sites in the world.

Out & About

- Pine Creek

The town of Pine Creek is located 90km north of Katherine at the junction of the Stuart and Kakadu Hwys. It is a small town with a population of about 300 people. As Pine Creek is located on the Stuart Highway it is a popular tourist stop for travellers that are journeying between Darwin and Alice Springs. During construction of the Overland Telegraph Line, posthole diggers discovered traces of gold and this led to the gold rush of 1871. Pine creek became a busy little mining town and around the year 1885 there were about 200 Europeans and 4000 Chinese working the gold fields.

Also check out the nearby Copperfield Dam which is a great place to swim and have a family picnic. It has picnic tables and toilet facilities. Umbrawarra Gorge has swimming holes with sandy beaches sheltered by the steep red gorge walls. The first group of swimming pools is about 15 min walk from the car park. Magnificent clifftop views and secluded waterholes will reward the adventurous, with local bushland abounding with wildlife.

Worth a look! There is a interesting annual festival held in Pine Creek. It is the Gold Rush Festival held early May each year where tourists and travellers can try their luck at panning for gold. It is an acknowledgement of the early origins of the town.

Pine Creek

Today, Pine Creek is a small friendly town that has food, fuel, accommodation and health services to cater visitor’s needs. Local attractions include the collections of historic buildings and sites from the mining days, gorges and swimming holes.

The town has two museums, a Railway Museum with a train on display and the National Trust Museum with displays of old bottles, mining equipment, war memorabilia and the Overland Telegraph line. There is a range of accommodation, caravan parks, hotel and cafes.

Out & About

Roper Gulf Region

The Roper Gulf Region is the heart of the Top End and Gulf Savannah. It covers an area from the southern Kakadu to the northern edge of the Barkly Tablelands and from the Gulf of Carpentaria and Queensland border to west of the Stuart Highway. This is an area almost as big as Victoria! The “top road”, the Central Arnhem Highway, A trip from Darwin to Katherine and Mataranka is an easy one day drive. Within the region there are majestic rivers, over 700 kilometres of untouched coast and islands, broad sweeping savannah plains and lines of sandstone cliffs, mesas and hills. Spectacular and ancient landscapes. This is like no place you have ever been.

LetsGoKids Northern Territory 2016

Mataranka, the “Heart of the Never Never,” is located 100 kilometres south east of Katherine on the Stuart Highway. The small friendly town is famous for its thermal springs. The sparkling clear limestone aquifer water, consistently 34o c, refreshes the swimming pools in beautiful tropical settings. This is an absolute delight anytime but especially on a hot day. The Jurmurark (12 Mile) Camping Ground, 17klms out of Mataranka provides a tranquil bushland environment close to the Roper River and Mataranka Falls.

Handy Hint Estuarine Crocodiles are common in the region - please be croc wise. Always check road conditions and take advice from locals and parks officials.

Roper Gulf

Two main road routes pass through the Roper Gulf Region, the Stuart Highway between Tennant Creek and Katherine and almost a 1000 kilometres of the Savannah Way, the grand tourist route between Cairns and Broome. Many of the best tourist sites in the region are easily accessible for travellers using these largely sealed all weather roads. The three east west roads make distinct sub regions.

is one of the truly great road journeys of the Northern Territory and the only road to Nhulunbuy. This 4wd road passes through sandstone capped hills, rolling grassland, dry forest, remnant rainforest, rivers and through small Indigenous communities including Barunga, Beswick, and Bulman. Whether it is cheering on the AFL stars at Traegar Park in Alice or the NRL’s Eels at Marrara, or kicking back at an open air movie or actively participating with your local club, in this section we will tell you Wots On and where! So whatever your speed, from spectator to active participant - Go

on, get out there!!!

Top level professional sport comes to the Territory again in 2016 Darwin hosting both AFL and NRL games for premiership points. The beautiful Traegar Park in “The Alice” will also see AFL regular season action again this year.

NRL -

The Northern Territory’s own Parramatta Eels return to Darwin’s TIO Stadium on Sat June 11 to take on the improving Nathan Friend led Gold Coast Titans. In what is sure to be a tough and skillful contest, the improving Eels will be looking to continue their run towards the finals.

AFL

- The superstars of the AFL return to the Territory on May 29th in Alice and July 9th in Darwin. The Melbourne Demons, led by the rugged and uncompromising Nathan Jones take on two of the powerhouses of the competition as they look to climb the ladder this year. The Alice clash will be a beauty as the super exciting Chad Wingard and the Port Power journey up from Adelaide to try and redeem themselves after a disappointing year last year. In Darwin, heare ho, the reigning Brownlow Medallist, the young superman, Nat Fyfe and his purple band of men hit town. Come along and see Mundy, Pavlich, Barlow, Ballantyne and Walters take on Jones, Jesse “Hulk” Hogan and Bernie Vince in what is sure to be a hard fought game.
