Auckland Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city with a population of 1.6 million people and is also the largest Polynesian city in the world (even though it’s not in Polynesia!!) Auckland has 3,702km of coastline, 48 volcanoes, 34 regional parks, and more than 21,000 kms of rivers and streams, which means New Zealand’s largest city has hundreds of thrilling adventures waiting for you to make happen.

Central Auckland is a hub of urban delights set against beautiful coastal scenery. It’s not hard to see why this is regarded as one of the most liveable cities in the world.
Auckland is centred around its waterfront, that is also the main transport hub. The commuter ferry terminal, trains for travel to the south and west from nearby Britomart and the extensive bus networks all radiate out of this precinct.
Out & About
Nearby is Viaduct Harbour; Built for the hosting of the America’s Cup, this area is now home to museums, bars, restaurants, walking and cycling paths, plenty of maritime history (including a giant yacht suspended above the entranceway) as well as kid’s playground and accommodation. In this precinct, The Voyager NZ Maritime Museum celebrates New Zealanders’ love for the sea, from the migration of early Polynesian voyagers, to modern day yachting.
WORTH A LOOK! Standing at 328 metres tall, on the corner of Victoria and Federal Streets, the Sky Tower offers crystal clear views of Auckland for 80 kilometres in every direction. The tower is the tallest man-made structure in New Zealand and among the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere. Enjoy dinner with a view in one of the tower’s sleek restaurants including the Sugar Club and Orbit Dining. The North Shore city region covers 120km of coastline and includes more than 30 sandy swimming beaches. Part of the North Shore’s appeal is that it is just a short drive from the city lights and downtown lifestyle of central Auckland, yet it has a real community feel and beachside character.

Visit the historic seaside village of Devonport. Discover small sandy beaches, a compact village centre bustling with cafes, shops and galleries, and two volcanic cones offering spectacular views. All this just a few minutes across the water from downtown Auckland.
Explore Takapuna. This vibrant seaside suburb is home to stylish shops, swanky cafes and a bustling Sunday Market. Visit the stunning white sand beach and enjoy the unspoiled views of Rangitoto and other Hauraki Gulf Islands. The Whangaparaoa Peninsula is known for its long golden beaches, and a stunning regional park. Enjoy a day trip or a relaxing weekend away – it’s just a 35 minute drive north of Auckland. The name Whangaparaoa is the Maori translation for Bay of Whales, as dolphins and orca whales can often be seen in the waters off the peninsula.
Out & About
Orewa is just 25 minutes north of downtown Auckland and boasts a picturesque 3 kilometre stretch of golden beach. It’s the perfect place for a family day out, with playgrounds, safe swimming, beautiful costal landscapes and a relaxed atmosphere. Head over the hill to Waiwera for a soak in the thermal hot pools. A short bus ride away from the city, around the waterfront, is the popular family area of Mission Bay. Here, The Promenade, is one of Auckland’s original beachside hangouts, and these days has cafes, restaurants, fish and chip shops, ice cream parlours, FREE wifi in the area, an iconic fountain and new kids playground. It also has a safe swimming beach and bike path. It has great views of the city and nearby islands. Iconic Rangitoto is the newest island at just over 600 years old and is an ideal family day trip in Auckland with tracks to the summit and lava tunnels to explore. Take lunch, refreshments, a torch (for tunnels) and good walking shoes. After a short ferry ride, you can take a guided tour on the 4WD road train or you can walk the 2 hour round trip to the summit. The views from the top are awesome. To the east of the city, there are beautiful islands perfect for day trips or weekend getaways. Waiheke, is the best known and is only a 35 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. Waiheke is packed full of vineyards, walking tracks and beautiful beaches.

Wynyard Quarter – CBD Down by the wharf area, this new playground is themed around the sea and it will capture the kids imagination. Barry Curtis Wetland Playground – Flatbush An unusual playground in the traditional sense, it has two birds’ keeps 3m off the ground accessed by ladders! Well worth a look! Myers Park, Central City Myers Park has a long history as a place for kids, and that tradition continues today. The park now boasts a state-of-the-art playground that is fast becoming a destination. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent here on waterfront developments over the past ten years. Key historic buildings have been gracefully resurrected as popular seaside restaurants, like Shed 5 and Dockside, as well as apartments and the Museum of Wellington City and Sea, which is housed in the old Bond Store.
LetsGoKids
The CBD doesn’t possess many family hotels, but Barclay Suites offer kitchen facilities and 2 bed apartments. There are several Quest options. Skycity - spacious and well located. Mercure - Close to Britomart, Queen St and ferry terminal (great views) Quay West Suites-large and fully self contained Airport for those early flights-Sudima or Holiday Inn.
DeBretts (p.63) has accommodation options aplenty, and best of all - a heated aquatic playground.
Hit the waterfront on foot and spend a pleasant morning or afternoon exploring. Start at Queens Wharf and follow the harbour around past Te Papa and Chaffers Marina to Oriental Bay, where you will find cafes and an enticing stretch of golden sand.
The national museum of New Zealand, Te Papa is located on the waterfront and is fascinating and fun for curious minds of any age. The exhibits are innovative and interactive, telling stories of New Zealand’s unique geological, biological, cultural and social history in new and exciting ways. By the way - general admission is free (some touring exhibitions have an entry fee).

A small city with a big reputation, Wellington is famous for being NZ’s constitutional and cultural capital. It is infamous for its weather, particularly the gale-force wind that barrels through.

The short distance between towns in the middle of the North Island means that a family driving holiday is easily achieved. The kids don’t even have time to ask “Are we there yet?” Of course you need to book ahead whether you are coming to town for a week or a few days.

Northwest of Wellington there’s a life that’s a world away from city living on the Kapiti Coast. Kapiti Island Nature Reserve is one of the more accessible nature reserves in New Zealand. Visitors can easily arrange a landing permit and launch transport using one of the licensed launch services. Enjoy sea kayaking, diving and boating in the Kapiti Island Marine Reserve areas. The Cable Car is a Wellington icon. It runs from Lambton Quay up to Kelburn, where at the top there’s a lookout, the Cable Car Museum, and Space Place at Carter Observatory. With interactive displays, a state of the art digital planetarium and historic telescopes, it’s a virtual voyage to the stars.
Colonel William Wakefield, a New Zealand Company representative, originally planned for the Wellington settlement to be where Petone is now situated. However when the Hutt River burst its banks and flooded the area, the site was shifted to its current location.

Watch the ferries sailing in through the harbour and aircraft taking off from Wellington Airport. You can drive all the way up, or walk through the town belt greenery. Grab some fish and chips and sit on the grass as the sun goes down and the light comes up.

Hamilton The city of Hamilton itself is flat and easily accessible on foot. There are many walking trails beside the river and the well laid out and manicured lawns and gardens are a feature.
Located in the heartland of New Zealand, Hamilton is NZ’s 4th largest city. Only 1 ½ hours drive from Auckland, Hamilton is a safe, friendly, clean city and a great place for family holidays. By basing your stay in Hamilton, you are within a short drive to the pristine beauty of The Coromandel Peninsula, the superb sandy beaches of Mount Maunganui and the “Thermal Wonderland” of Rotorua (The Maori cultural capital of New Zealand), beautiful Lake Taupo (New Zealand’s largest lake), or a short trip to see the grandeur of the Waitomo Caves.
The mighty Waikato River winds its way directly through Hamilton, providing great activity options for a relaxing afternoon. Kayak the river on a guided tour or relax with a quiet stroll from the CBD along the river walks to the Hamilton Gardens at the southern end of the city. Wellington Street Beach has been awarded the title of New Zealand’s best inland beach. While not a typical beach with ocean, the sandy strip is actually beside the Waikato River.
Situated in the heart of the Waikato region, Hamilton is one of New Zealand’s fastest growing cities. Hamilton is a great place to spend time in - it is rich in culture with a vibrant centre, the majestic Waikato River and parks and gardens to explore. It’s pretty uncommon to have a beach in the middle of a town, but Hamilton is special like that. A great, free place to swim, with a small wharf to jump from. There is a cafe across the road as well.

But why fight the traffic, cruise in style along the river on the Waikato Explorer. Located on the banks of the Waikato River, the Waikato Museum is Hamilton’s art and culture hub. Entry is free to the Museum, but donations are welcomed to assist with the running of the complex.

You can bring a picnic and definitely spend a full day here with BBQ areas outside, and lots of space to run around.
The Waikato River plays such a big part in Hamilton’s appeal. It snakes through the city, and you’ll see glimpses of it every few minutes as you travel through.
