Auckland - Out Auckland is dynamic, different, diverse and constantly evolving as one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities. Auckland has 3,702km of coastline, 48 volcanoes, 34 regional parks, and more than 21,000 kms of rivers and streams, which means New Zealand’s largest city has hundreds of thrilling adventures waiting for you to make happen. Auckland is centred around its waterfront, that is also the main transport hub. The commuter ferry terminal, trains for travel to the south and west from nearby Britomart and the extensive bus networks all radiate out of this precinct. Nearby is Viaduct Harbour. Built for the hosting of the America’s Cup, this area is now home to musesums, bars, restaurants, walking and cycling paths, plenty of maritime history (including a giant yacht suspended above the entranceway) as well as kid’s playgrounds and accommodation.

Auckland Checklist Don’t leave Auckland without... Exploring some waterfalls in the nearby Waitakere Ranges. Investigating how things work at MOTAT. Taking a ferry across to Rangitoto and climbing (or catching a ride) to the summit – one of the world’s great views. Observing the universe at Stardome Observatory. They have great family events (www.stardome.co.nz). Paying $1 to hop aboard the red “CityLink” bus for a cheap sightseeing tour of the city. Checking out NZ’s yachting and maritime history at the Voyager Maritime Museum. Skiing at Australasias’s only indoor snow play facility at Snowplanet (p.14). Attending a rugby game (or cricket) at the iconic Eden Park – the spiritual home of Kiwi Sport. Stepping back in time at Howick Historical Village. See how life used to be. Visiting Auckland Museum and War Memorial. It’s FREE for Aucklanders. Soaking in a hot pool at nearby Waiwera. They even show weekly “dive in” movies for kids. Experience the thrill of sailing on a genuine America’s Cup racing yacht – you can participate as much or as little as you desire. Take the ferry across to Devonport and enjoy a café lunch and a spot of shopping or explore the WWII tunnels and gun placements. Enjoy wine tasting and beachcombing on Waiheke Island, a half hour ferry ride from the city centre. Visit the wildlife sanctuary on Tiritiri Matangi. The island is home to many endangered birds, including the extremely rare Takahe. Head out to Crystal Mountain (p.12) and pan for crystals or check out the animal park and amusements ride. Visit the Sky Tower (p.6) and travel 328 metres upwards in glass fronted lifts to the spectacular viewing platforms. Family members who are 10 years or over might like to do a Sky walk or Sky jump! Check out Kelly Tarlton’s Antarctic Encounter & Underwater World (Inside Front Cover) that gets you up close and personal with sharks and penguins with an underwater tunnel experience and a brilliant Antarctic section too! Have a thrilling day at Rainbows End Adventure Park (p.4) in Manakau City. Plummet on the Fear Fall, spiral on the roller coaster and zoom down the log flume. Go on an Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari (coupon p.10) with the kids for 4hrs+ for a brilliant family sightseeing trip. Climb to the top of the Auckland Harbour Bridge (coupon p.8) and check out the spectacular views.

EXPERIENCE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS AT THE SKY TOWER! •

Lots of activities for the whole family

Ride up the glass fronted lifts*

360-degree views for up to 80 kilometres in every direction •

Plus, sit back and relax on Level 50 at the Sky Café and indulge in a Kapiti ice cream.

A short bus ride away is the popular family area of Mission Bay. Here, The Promenade, is one of Auckland’s original beachside hangouts, and these days has cafes, restaurants, fish and chip shops, ice cream parlours, FREE wifi in the area, an iconic fountain and new kids playground. Oh – we forgot to mention a safe swimming beach and watersports such as kayaking and paddleboards which you can rent. It has great views of the city and nearby islands. The easiest thing to look out for if you ever get lost in the CBD, is the Sky Tower. At 328 metres tall, it is hard to miss. The tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere is an attraction for adrenaline junkies wishing to walk around its high ledge or do the SkyJump. Or you can simply take in the view of central Auckland and the surrounding areas, such as the Hauraki Gulf and the Harbour Bridge, by going to multiple viewing platforms in the tower or having a coffee at the Sky Lounge.

WORTH A LOOK!

Walk to the summit of Rangitoto, the black lava volcanic island in the middle of the inner Hauraki Gulf. Hire a kayak and join an evening paddle to the island.

Auckland is set on three beautiful harbours and the landscape is dotted with 48 extinct volcanoes. Rangitoto is the stand out with its distinctive symmetrical cone and super location just off the coast. It stands guard over Auckland and the views are spectacular! After a short ferry ride, you can take a guided tour on the 4WD road train or you can walk the 2 hour round trip to the summit. The views from the top are awesome. To the east of the city, there are beautiful islands perfect for day trips or weekend getaways. Waiheke, is the best known and is only a 35 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. Waiheke is packed full of vineyards, walking tracks and beautiful beaches.

Sheepworld is nearby and Warkworth acts as a gateway to the stunning beach and wine areas to the east. Goat Island, Tawharanui and Matakana are all within easy reach from here.

There are plenty of places in Auckland both indoor and out where kids of all ages can get together to play and party. In this section we offer you a selection of both as well as our favourite parks and playgrounds. Western Springs Park - Western Springs Bordering both the Auckland Zoo and the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT), two top family attractions, this is the perfect place for a walk or a picnic afterwards – playground included. Kids (and adults) love seeing the swans and ducks on the lake and roaming around the open lawns too.

DID YOU KNOW The Brick Bay Sculpture Trail, located in Warkworth, is a fantastic outdoor gallery experience where you can walk along the 2km trail and see up to 45 ever-changing sculptures framed by towering native trees and birdlife.

Auckland Domain- Grafton Take a stroll through Auckland’s oldest park, built on an extinct volcanic crater, with views over the harbour. Feed the ducks, wander one of the numerous walking tracks, set up a picnic under a huge tree, visit the spectacular Auckland Museum, and see the exotic plants and flowers in the indoor Wintergardens.

It is spacious and diverse. The Wintergardens are a feature of the Domain with the Auckland War Memorial Museum sitting at the highest point. There are formal gardens, duck ponds, large green open spaces edged by mature trees, bush walks and statuary.

Who said “There’s no such thing as a FREE lunch?”

Upper Hutt is 10 minutes further up the valley. attractions include the Maidstone Max bike trail, and the H20 Xtreme Aquatic Centre, which contains hydroslides, swimming pools, wave machine and a simulated beach.

LetsGoKids New Zealand September 2017 - August 2018

Let us show you what there is to see and do in the nation’s capital for FREE (or maybe having to spend just a little). Go on you have no excuses now – Get off the couch and get out there!! 1. Visit Wellington’s famous Beehive Building - the executive building of New Zealand’s Parliament. If Wellington has an architectural icon it is the Beehive. It might not be Eiffel tower famous but it is noteworthy. Tours of the Parliament are possible during the week (10am-4pm). 2. Wellington Cable Car – Take a ride on the long serving cable car (technically a funicular for those expecting something a bit more alpine). Great for kids and adults, the trip up to the top gives great views of the city of Wellington. The ride is short – just three and a half minutes – but there is a lot to do at the top. The cable cars leave regularly, roughly every five minutes. A nice bonus: kids under five are free. Adults $7.50 & Children (5-15) $3.50. 3. Read about the history of Wellington’s famous cable car at the Cable Car Museum – Lots of photographs, exhibits of old cars and explanation of how it all works. FREE! 4. Take a stroll through the Botanic Gardens after your cable car ride. There’s several attractions within the gardens. The gardens themselves are quite nice and the views over Wellington are spectacular on a clear day. Have a picnic! 5. After your stroll in the Botanic Gardens check out the Observatory. These days there is a space themed centre and planetarium that is great for kids. Entry to Space Place is free. Planetarium costs a little. 6. There’s a free shuttle leaving from Zealandia Nature Reserve (and returning to) various places in downtown Wellington (the Te Papa museum, the main visitor’s centre and the top cable car station). It gets you there (or back) in about 20 minutes making it one of the easier things to do around Wellington.

7. Take in some culture at The National Museum/Te Papa. It is one of the best family activities in Wellington. It has something for everyone. Different aspects of the history of New Zealand are laid out in an easy to explore way. Many sections have interactive displays with touch screens. There are several kids areas with hands on play stuff related to the displays they were near. Some special exhibitions have entry charges. 8. Pop into the Wellington Museum (p.28) and check out the history of Wellington. The museum is located in the old Bond Store – the warehouse where unloaded goods were kept until all duties were paid. The history is cleverly woven into the museum. Photo courtesy of Tourism New Zealand

The city is home to Weta Caves (see p.27), which helped Peter Jackson to create his famous Lord of the Rings movie series. Get a behind the scenes glimpse into the imagination and artistry behind some of the world’s most spectacular movies at the Weta Cave mini-museum, right there where the special effects wizardry happens. Or put yourself in the picture with a The Lord of the Rings location tour. Wellington City is wedged between steep hills and the sea. The diversity of natural resources means within 10-15 minutes, you can be walking or mountain biking in native bush, or kayaking around the coastline. Lower Hutt is a city located northeast of Wellington and rests on the banks of the Hutt River, on the northern shores of the Wellington Harbour, in the Hutt Valley. Only a short 15 minute drive or train ride from Wellington, the Hutt Valley is home to adventurous activities, a rich culture and heritage, and beautiful scenery. From the Hutt River to the bush-clad hills, Lower Hutt is home to some of the Wellington’s best walking and mountain bike trails.

Wellington - Out & About

9. Jump in the car and drive up to the lookout at Mt Victoria. 360 degree views of Wellington, The Harbour and the surrounding districts. The planes landing at the airport pass straight on by! 10. Check your bearings in the CBD on your smartphone or make that activity booking on the go, as downtown Wellington has FREE Wifi. 11. Basin Reserve on the outskirts of the CBD has a small cricket museum that is a donation entry and has extremely picturesque English type setting that is a throwback to days past.

Out & About - Hamilton

Hamilton - Out & About Just south of Auckland lies the Waikato region; a land of lush pastures and fertile soils with Hamilton at its centre. It is New Zealand’s largest inland city, situated on the banks of the Waikato River, the country’s longest river at 425km. A metropolitan city situated on the banks of the mighty Waikato River, Hamilton’s rich cultural mix and vibrant centre makes it a perfect place to experience the friendly Kiwi lifestyle. The city of Hamilton itself is flat and easily accessible on foot. There are many walking trails beside the river and the well laid out and manicured lawns and gardens are a feature. The Waikato River winds its way directly through Hamilton, providing great activity options for a relaxing afternoon.

Kayak the river on a guided tour or relax with a quiet stroll from the CBD along the river walks to the Hamilton Gardens at the southern end of the city. Wellington Street Beach has been awarded the title of New Zealand’s best inland beach. While not a typical beach with ocean, the sandy strip is actually beside the Waikato River.

The Waikato River plays such a big part in Hamilton’s appeal. It snakes through the city, and you’ll see glimpses of it every few minutes as you travel through. But why fight the traffic, cruise in style along the river on the Waikato Explorer. Located on the banks of the Waikato River, the Waikato Museum is Hamilton’s art and culture hub. It was built in 1987 by the same architect that designed NZ’s National Museum Te Papa.

Rotorua - Out & About

Out & About - Rotorua Rotorua (or Rotovegas) as it is sometimes referred to, is located about three hours drive from Auckland. It nestles around the shores of Lake Rotorua, which was created from the crater of a large volcano.

Photo courtesy of Tourism New Zealand

It attracts visitors from all over the world, who are drawn to the sulphuric delights of the city's geothermal activity. Geysers and mud pools form the foundations of tourism here, thanks to the Caldera (dormant volcano) upon which Rotorua sits. The smell of sulphur in the air is the first sign that you’ve arrived in Rotorua. The second is the wisps of steam that you notice escaping out of vents, grates and holes in the ground virtually everywhere. Don’t worry – you soon get used to the smell!!!

The reason for all the steam and smell is because Rotorua is a part of the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The Volcanic Zone, a geothermal field that extends from White Island through to Mt Ruapehu on the south side of Taupo, provides erupting geysers, bubbling mud pools and naturally heated mineral waters that are said to have great healing properties. Spa baths are everywhere and the Polynesian Spa and Blue Baths have family heated pools. The kids love splashing around in the warm and inviting waters.

Rotorua is the ancestral home of the Te Arawa people who settled there over 600 years ago and their presence today offers visitors many different cultural experiences. One third of Rotorua’s population is Maori, making it the cultural heartland of New Zealand and indigenous art, music, food and legends are an integral part of the city. Where to see Rotorua’s geothermal wonders? Wai-O-Tapu - Meaning “Sacred Waters”, this is one of the world’s most natural theme parks. Sitting just 30kms from Rotorua, prepare to be amazed by sights such as the Champagne Pool. The highlight of any visit to Wai-O-Tapu is the Lady Knox Geyser. You’ll be standing openmouthed at the sight of this grand old dame shooting boiling hot water 20m into the sky. She only comes alive once every day, though, so check the times to make sure you don’t miss her.

Orakei Korako is a stunning geothermal park which can only be reached by boat. Colorful silica terraces are a camera’s delight, and the ‘Hidden Valley’ is like something from a film. It’s the largest geyser field in New Zealand, filled with hot spouts of water, colourful mineral pools and rich, dense forests and glades.

Hell’s Gate is New Zealand’s most active geothermal reserve with the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere and the only geothermal mud baths in New Zealand.

Rotorua has some pretty cool family activities, that don’t involve mud, steam or culture. In the heart of 350 acres of lush farmland, yet only 10 minutes from Rotorua, you’ll find New Zealand’s Agrodome. For over 40 years, visitors from all over the globe have witnessed the world-famous Farm Show – starring a cast of talented animals. You can also take a Farm Tour to explore a real working farm, hand-feed loads of friendly animals, and sample delicious kiwifruit juice and honey. There’s also the Nursery, with baby animals available for cuddles and photos all year round, and our Woollen Mill and Shearing Museum. Rainbow Springs is a beautiful nature park with a friendly, fun atmosphere that includes a kiwi nocturnal enclosure, trout feeding pools and a live bird show. See endangered native species like the kiwi and tuatara at the largest kiwi hatching facility in New Zealand. No visit would be complete without riding the Big Splash. A boat ride which teaches visitors some unique New Zealand stories and ends with an adrenalin rush as you accelerate towards the bottom, creating a spectacular plume of water. The area also abounds with 16 large lakes such as Rotoiti and Tarawera, so water activities like cruising, sailing and rafting are everywhere. There are kayaks to hire, lake cruises and for a bit of adrenaline, jet boating! The Rotorua region has some of New Zealand’s best fishing waters. Lake Tarawera is famous for trophy rainbow trout. Rotorua is a well-known mountain bike heaven, home to an extensive network of tracks.

Just off State highway 5 is Whakarewarewa Forest and its towering Californian Redwood trees. The forest gives mountain bikers and walkers the chance to explore some of the best trails in New Zealand. The Visitor Centre includes a gift shop, café and details of the trails to explore.

The Eruption of Mt Tarawera

In the early hours of the morning of June 10 1886, the Tarawera range was erupting. At 12:30am the first earthquakes were felt. People throughout the area were jolted awake as earthquakes became increasingly powerful. By 2.30am its three peaks were erupting, with columns reaching thousands of metres into the sky.

Destructive, hurricane force winds developed as the eruption columns sucked in air from the surrounding countryside. Violent electrical storms above the eruption columns blasted into the night sky, with water vapours poured out by the eruption causing torrential rains. The final length of the craters was a massive 16-km long. For the surviving local Maori, the eruption was devastating.

Out & About - Napier

Napier - Out & About

Hawke's Bay is blessed with a sunny, Mediterranean-style climate, and is one of New Zealand's warmest, driest regions. It has a climate of long hot summers and mild winters. The pleasant and settled weather is one of the prime reasons to visit. It is also why the region is so well known for producing great wine and food. Napier’s trademark is its Art Deco architecture, built in the 1930s, following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that destroyed the city in 1931.

Along its two kilometres of sea frontage, lined with Norfolk Island Pines first planted in 1888, Napier’s Marine Parade offers a succession of visitor attractions set within a landscaped stretch of grass, pathways, and gardens.

It also explains why aficionados from around the globe descend on Napier every February with their cars, costumes, and other condiments, for Tremains Art Deco Festival – a fun and frivolous celebration of this distinctive period style.

The Hawke’s Bay Museum and Art Gallery (MTG) (p.42) features superb classical and contemporary exhibitions of art, craft and social history, including interactive exhibitions of the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake, which levelled and/or razed much of the city, and the subsequent Art Deco architectural and cultural revival. You can take a guided Art Deco walk for some intriguing insights into life following the earthquake.

A Napier landmark is Bluff Hill, which is home for many Napier residents and provides views of the town beaches of Perfume Point and Westshore, past the newly upgraded airport and out towards Whirinaki. Bluff Hill also overlooks the Port of Napier, one of New Zealand’s busiest ports and a stopping point for many cruise liners. Napier’s Prison operated from 1853 until 1993, with the old building being NZ’s oldest prison take a tour and you’ll be entertained with tales of victims, villains and heroes, escapees and ghosts!
