- Hobart Hobart is Australia’s most southerly capital and is one of the most picturesque cities in the world. The imposing Mt. Wellington stands guard over the city which is hemmed in on all sides by the mountains and the mighty Derwent River. The city has a distinct nautical feel and the dominance of the sandstone buildings give it a real olde worlde charm.

to be shipped around the world. Now they house hotels and world class restaurants. The aquatic nature of Hobart means you will find lots of yachts and dinghys dotting all the coves and little bays of the city which are normally accompanied by grassy parks or playgrounds that provide a picture-perfect picnic spot. Walk along Constitution Dock amongst the fishing boats on a spring day and you get the feel that you could be anywhere on the Mediterranean. The old warehouses were once factories that employed thousands making jam for IXL or packing apples

The ever vigilant Mt. Wellington is always visible and is certainly worth exploring. The road is sealed and is kept in great condition. The whole family will love the breathtaking scenery and be intrigued by the history and uniqueness that Hobart offers.

Not much money? Times are tough?

Let us show you how to spend some time in Hobart on a budget...see lots, spend not much, if anything!! 1. Take the drive up to Mt. Wellington (25 mins). One of the world’s truly great views. There is an indoor observatory. You may even see snow up there and build a snowman! There are not many places that have such a tall mountain overlooking their CBD like this! You can see almost 100km on a clear day. 2. Book into Hobart Bush Adventures (costs a little) and experience environmental focussed adventures and activities in the local bushland reserves. 3. Walk down through Salamanca Place to get a feel for the “Old Hobart” – Go on a Saturday morning and experience the “New Hobart” as the whole area comes to life with the world famous Salamanca Market. Food and entertainment as well as stalls galore!. 4. Go for a walk through the historic Battery Point area. Check out the quaint shops and tiny cottages. 5. Explore Constitution Dock. Follow the trail of the interpretive plaques. Look for the statues. 6. Grab some authentic fresh fish and chips from one of the fish punts. 7. Head to the Tasmanian Museum - . You won’t be disappointed. It is going through a major overhaul and is back online starting from October. Lots of hands-on stuff for the kids! 8. The Maritime Museum (costs a little) across the road tells of Hobart’s early seafaring history. 9. Anglesea Barracks just up the road in Davey St has an army museum with lots of artifacts. Shopping in Hobart is diverse and is spread among four main areas: The CBD, Rosny, Kingston and Glenorchy/Moonah. Rosny is home to Eastlands (see opposite) which is a large multi level mall with national chain stores and local shops. The CBD has Myer, many small arcades and street shopping in Murray, Liverpool and Bathurst Streets and Elizabeth Street Mall (outdoor mall). Parking is available and pretty good. Esprit Kids and Smiggle in Murray Street are two shops kids love. Kingston has the ever expanding Channel Court which is mall sized but mainly an outdoor precinct. It has lots of food shops and eateries.

The Elizabeth St/Main Rd strip is basically one long stretch of restaurants, takeaways and shops from the CBD, through Nth Hobart, onto Moonah and finishing at Northgate Mall in Glenorchy. It has many kids clothing shops, computer stores, shoe shops and kid’s toy stores along its length. Although not as large as Eastlands, Northgate in Glenorchy has many national chain stores, also with that indoor shopping mall experience.

Shop Last but not least, Hobart’s most famous shopping experience is of course Salamanca Market! From 8am-3pm every Saturday, Salamanca Place on the waterfront comes alive with hundreds of vendors selling mainly hand crafted arts, crafts and foods. Thousands of people flock there each week no matter the weather, to sample local delicacies, listen to the local Andean band and buy organically grown local produce. On any visit to Hobart, it’s not to be missed!

Hobart has an abundance of casual eateries and food experiences that are perfect for a relaxed family meal or that special occasion. In North Hobart in Elizabeth St overlooking the city (a bit too far to walk), there are restaurants, cafes and bakeries aplenty, with cuisines from just about every country on the planet. La Porchetta (see below) and Fish 349 are favs here ,Sandy Bay also features a large amount of eateries. Among them is Mee Wah Chinese Restaurant. This place is not for those on a budget, but the service and the quality of food is as good as it gets. Also try the German Bakerei - traditional pastry products.

Looking for Value! Finding eateries with Kids Eat Free can save you a fortune on eating out. La Porchetta in North Hobart and Salamanca Place, Soho in South Hobart and the awesome Shoreline Hotel in Howrah all do Kids Eat Free and offer great variety. At Constitution Dock the Seafood is fresh and cheap. For lunch or dinner, the “fish punts” offer plenty of choice, or take a seat downstairs at Mures.

- Tamar Valley The Tamar Island Wetlands is a unique reserve just ten minutes drive from Launceston and is a nice spot for lovers of nature and particularly bird watchers. From the car park at Lucks Flats there is a gravel track to the boardwalk. The wide, level boardwalk of about 500 metres is suitable for pedestrians, prams and wheelchairs (no bikes), and extends over the swamps and crosses the river to two islets and finally Tamar Island.

Tamar Valley

A fantastic Interpretation Centre offers visitors the opportunity to learn about the great value of the wetlands. Over the summer holiday period, a Discovery Ranger program operates daily for children and the young at heart. Opening times for the Reserve are dawn to dusk every day of the year except Christmas Day.The Interpretation Centre is open from 9am - 5pm during the summer and closes an hour earlier in winter.

Continue down the road to Beauty Point, where the name says it all. It is where platypus and echidnas await you at Platypus House and right next door, seahorses as Seahorse World. They are located on the old wharf in an amazing setting (vouchers p.44). From here you can look across the river and see the East Tamar Valley towns of Low Head and Georgetown. No need to drive all the way back to Lonnie though, as you can cross the river via the imposing Batman Bridge, an engineering feat that towers above the Tamar River. It has to be seen to be believed.
