Out & About

Welcome to Hobart - the capital of the island state of Tasmania. It is Australia’s most southerly capital and the second oldest in Australia, after Sydney, founded as a penal colony in 1804.

Nestled amongst the foothills of Mt Wellington, Hobart combines heritage charm with a modern lifestyle in a setting of exceptional beauty. The city has an olde worlde feel with its captivating history, stunning waterways, rugged mountains and gourmet experiences, it has something for everyone. Hobart offers a contrasting blend of heritage, scenery and culture, with world class activities and attractions nearby.

It is one of the most picturesque cities in the world, with the imposing figure of Mt Wellington always visible and standing guard. “The Mountain” as the locals refer to it, is a great place to visit for outstanding views over Hobart and Southern Tasmania. It is often snow capped, so it is also a good chance to play in the snow with the kids. There is a road all the way to the summit.

Water dominates in Hobart with the majestic Derwent River separating the Eastern suburbs from the city and making them accessible via only the Tasman Bridge, the Bowen Bridge at Elwick or the bridge at the appropriately named, Bridgewater. The aquatic nature of Hobart means you will find lots of small marinas crowded with yachts and dinghys dotted all around the coves and little grassy parks or playgrounds that provide a picture-perfect picnic spot. Hobart’s cool climate makes it easy to unwind and relax without working up a sweat, its streets and laneways are picturesque and filled with little intricacies that give the city its character; and there are a variety of shopping options and mouthwatering cuisines incorporating the fresh local seafood that are simply waiting to be sampled. Explore Salamanca Place, a short walk from the waterfront, with its galleries, theatres, craft shops and restaurants in 1830s Georgian warehouses and on Saturdays enjoy the food and entertainment of Salamanca Market, Australia’s best outdoor market. Battery Point is a suburb of Hobart immediately south of the central business district. From Salamanca Place, climb the colonial era Kelly’s steps and wander up through the lanes and quaint streets of Battery Point, filled with stories of Hobart’s historic past.

HANDY HINT Whilst in the middle of the CBD, pop across to the museum, grab a coffee in the on-site café, and make use of their free wi-fi offering, to help you check your emails, do some research or book those tour tickets. Whilst you’re there use the free entry to the museum to learn a little bit about Hobart, its history, its customs and its unique place in the world! The curious 19th century sandstone and weatherboard cottages possess eccentric charm and nestle tightly into tiny streets and laneways. Battery Point is a charming place to discover on foot. Window shopping can be a delightful way to pass the day, with plenty of antique shops and bookstores to pass through. As any parent will tell you, getting from A to B is the hardest part of travelling with children. Fortunately, in Tasmania, A is never very far from B. This will leave your family feeling unhurried, stress-free and ready to enjoy the state’s beaches, rivers, forests and wildlife parks. Hobart is a great place to base yourself for this.

Richmond -

Out & About Photo courtesy of Tourism Tasmania

Just 25 minutes from Hobart, Richmond is one of Tasmania’s most popular destinations. A leisurely stroll through Richmond will reveal a Georgian town lost in time. Nestled in the heart of the Coal River Valley, Richmond was established as an important military staging post and convict station linking Hobart with Port Arthur. The village is famous for its elegant architecture, with beautiful heritage buildings dating back as early as the 1820’s that now house galleries, tea shops, craft boutiques and museums.

With the rolling hills, Georgian-style buildings and cobblestone streets, even today, it looks like a quaint English village from the 1800s.

Visit the Old Richmond Goal (p.16) to get a feel for those days as a penal colony. The Richmond Gaol is the oldest gaol in Australia. Built in 1825, it was in use until 1928 and gives glaring insight into the difficulty of convict life in the 19th century. It’s open for self-guided tours daily, and as you explore the cells you can learn about the stories of some of the notorious inmates. The Old Hobart Town Model Village (see below) is a perfect setting to learn about the life of early settlers in Hobart. It is located in the heart of Richmond and visitors can walk through a miniature replica of Hobart as it was in the 1820s.

- Richmond Photo courtesy of Tourism Tasmania

Richmond houses Australia’s oldest bridge still in use. Built in 1823, it is a great photo op with grassy banks for picnicking and a local duck population. Get up close to the intricate detail, or hire a row boat and run your hands over the sandstone bricks of the arches.

Today Richmond offers visitors an insight into the types of buildings the earliest settlers lived in, were incarcerated in, prayed in and drank in. It has become one of Tasmania’s premier tourist attractions.

New to the area is the unique “Pooseum” (see opposite). Find out all you ever wanted to know about something everyone has in common!! Kids love it! Zoodoo is a wildlife park about 6 kilometres from Richmond. It is spread over 90 hectares. Zoodoo is a hands-on safari and native animal park. Here you can see one of Tasmania’s largest collections of native, agricultural and exotic animals, including two rare white lions.

DID YOU KNOW

Be sure to sample the local chocolates and old fashioned sweets as you stroll down the colonial main street. Nearby the Coal Valley Wineries, Wicked Cheese and Coal River Farm give you a taste of the local produce. Peter Rabbit’s Garden is a recent addition featuring the storybook characters in an English garden setting.

Convict Ikey Solomon was an inmate at the Richmond Gaol in 1832, before being moved to Port Arthur two years later. It’s widely believed that Charles Dickens used Solomon’s story as inspiration for the immortal character of Fagin in Oliver Twist.

Eat Hobart has an abundance of casual eateries and cafes that are perfect for families. Lots of them have playgrounds and even activities to occupy the kids whilst you enjoy a cuppa or meal. At Constitution Dock the seafood is fresh and cheap. For lunch or dinner, the “fish punts” offer plenty of choice, or take a seat at Fish Frenzy (see below), where kids are welcome. Up in Elizabeth St, North Hobart overlooking the city (a bit too far to walk), there are restaurants, cafes and bakeries aplenty, with cuisines from just about every country on the planet.

The suburbs of Hobart have a range of Hotels that will keep the kids occupied whilst you enjoy your meal. The Carlyle Hotel in Moonah or the Granada Tavern in Derwent Park, The Foreshore Hotel in Lauderdale or The Shoreline Hotel Howrah are the answer. They all feature kid’s meals, entertainment and have great playgrounds. Cooleys in Moonah, The Kingston Hotel and The Mornington Hotel all have more than your average menu at a reasonable price.

It is one of the most popular malls in Hobart, containing many of the high-street names, national chain stores and a variety of shops. It also has a large food court.

Thousands flock there each week no matter the weather, to sample local delicacies, browse the stalls and listen to local musicians. It is Tasmania’s #1 most visited attraction with 25,000 - 40,000 people visiting every weekend. A very impressive number given the population of Hobart. Not to be missed!

Play There are plenty of places in Hobart both indoor and out where kids of all ages can get together to play and party. In this section we offer you a selection of both as well as our favourite parks and playgrounds. If you are feeling active, grab your bike and ride the Derwent, Clarence or Glenorchy bike trails (maps available from councils), play on one of the great beaches at Lauderdale, Clarence or Kingston, or run amok on a playground. The city is blessed with choices and here are a few of our favourites.

Kangaroo Bay Parklands - Bellerive One of the state’s newest playgrounds, this entire waterfront area is undergoing a transformation with a new skate park also nearby. The playground features innovative water play machines including hand-operated pumps. There is also a picnic area, basketball hoop, urban table tennis table, exercise areas, and a net play area.

Mt Stuart Park There is a large slide and unique climbing wall available for use at Mount Stuart Park. The covered electric BBQ and seating is located adjacent to a small sports field which is ideal for open play. There is also a great little cubby house, bouncers and treadmill roller. Long Beach Playground Also known locally as The Boat Park, this area provides a flat site and good quality playground facilities. Play Bushwalks Mount Wellington/kunanyi The Mountain, as the locals call it, is an obvious place to go bushwalking. While the top of the mountain is often windy and chilly, stick closer to Fern Tree and you will find a range of walks such as the Silver Falls Loop — plus there is a park with a playground and public toilets right near car parking. From midway up at The Springs, you can find walks such as the Octopus Tree Walk, or a bit further up, the Organ Pipes Track.

Knocklofty Reserve At the top of West Hobart and Mount Stuart is the Knocklofty Reserve. This bushland connects to Wellington Park and there heaps of walking trails of various lengths and difficulty, with the Summit Loop a good 4-kilometre walk from the car park at the top of Forest Road. Many of the tracks are accessible for prams.

Waterfalls Waterfalls make for a great attraction when walking and can be a good way to get the kids motivated.

We’re fortunate that Tasmania is one of the most beautiful places on Earth; it’s compact, diverse, wild and accessible.

Snug Falls takes about one hour to walk to and it is about a half-hour drive south of Hobart. Not far from Snug Falls is Pelverata Falls in the Snug Tiers Nature Reserve.

Tasmania has 19 national parks and many of these are within a short distance of the major population centres of Launceston, Hobart, Burnie and Devonport.

Pelverata Falls is a slightly harder walk than Snug Falls and takes about two hours. Closer to Hobart is New Town Falls, reached at the end of Lenah Valley Road with access via the Lenah Valley Fire Trail.

Mt Field, the state’s oldest national park, has a timeless appeal. Just about everyone loves a waterfall, and the beautiful Russell Falls is only a 10 minute stroll from the Visitor Centre on a level track that’s suitable for strollers.

- Bruny Island

It is made up of a North and South Island which are seperated by a narrow isthmus called “The Neck”. Access to the island is by vehicular ferry departing at Roberts Point on North Bruny. The Bruny Island Ferry Service runs seven days a week. Check the website www.brunyislandferry. com.au “The Neck” has a timber stepped boardwalk that gives you some of the most spectacular 360° panoramic views of the Bruny Island coastline. This isthmus is an important habitat for native wildlife, like little penguins, echidnas and mutton birds. Bruny’s coastal scenery is magical. There are countless swimming and surf beaches, plus good sea and freshwater fishing. You can visit the Cape Bruny Lighthouse, first lit in 1838. Today it’s Australia’s second oldest and longest continually staffed lighthouse or you can join an eco-cruise exploring the stunning coastline of the island.

You will find hand made fudge, chocolate, truffles, berries, cheese and fresh oysters. Bruny Island is also home to Australia’s southern-most vineyard and there are some excellent restaurants and cafes scattered across the island’s townships as well as Australia’s second most southerly pub! South Bruny has two general stores - at Adventure Bay and Alonnah - with eftpos facilities, takeaway food and limited provisions. Adventure Bay has petrol and an ATM. There are no stores on North Bruny. There are plenty of places to stay with accommodation ranging from friendly campsites to luxury beachfront retreats. Our favourite is Captain Cook Holiday Park (see below).

Locals liken their city to a large country town easy to get around and friendly.

As you journey up the highway from Hobart, you reach the picturesque historic area known as Northern Midlands. The pretty riverside village of Ross was built by convict labour in the early 1800s and has been so well preserved that visitors can still enjoy a genuine piece of history today. Ross is arguably the finest nineteenth century village in Australia. Cobble-style paths and grand old elm trees line the main street, while the Ross Bridge, Australia’s third oldest bridge still standing, is possibly the most beautiful of its kind left in the world.

Tamar Valley -

Out & About

Come and discover the magic of the Tamar Valley. It’s just one big kid’s playground!! Located a short drive north of Launceston, The Valley is actually on both sides of the river and is referred to as East and West Tamar. West Tamar has the towns of Exeter, Beaconsfield and Beauty Point which all have much to offer families, whilst across in the East Tamar; Georgetown is its main town which is surrounded by wineries and produce farms dotted through the hillsides. It also is home to important reminders of the area’s seafaring heritage. A visit to the Tamar Valley wouldn’t be complete without popping into Grindelwald and taking in the delights of this Swiss styled village (inside front cover).

Mini golf, restaurants, hotel, jumping pillow, lake with paddle boats and even a golf course! It has lots to amuse and entertain anyone.

Wander along the quaint Swiss-like row of shops and have a fondue or meringue with a cup of hot chocolate in the town centre, and you’ll be feeling as though you just popped over to Europe. There’s an ice cream shop, chocolate café, bakery, clothes shop, newsagent, day spa and hairdresser. Tasmania Zoo is only 18km from Launceston, in the foothills of the Tamar Valley, and it’s Tassie’s biggest wildlife park. The zoo has over 80 species of birds, bucket loads of exotic animals, and of course, kids can visit the state’s mascot – the beautiful, curious and often misunderstood (they make loud noises and fight a lot, but they’re not bad creatures at all), Tasmanian Devil.

The whole area is breathtaking in its beauty and is packed with things to see and do, from interacting with the iconic Tassie Devil to getting lost in a monster maze.

Devonport is situated on the Mersey River and is the home port of the vehicle and passenger ferry, The Spirit of Tasmania.

Only one hours drive from Launceston and Cradle Mountain, it makes it the perfect playground to access everything the area has to offer.

The roads out of this major coastal city lead to the volcanic farmlands of the Mersey Valley, the beaches of Port Sorrell (and the Narawntapu National Park beyond), not to mention Cradle Mountain and the cave systems of the Mole Creek Karst National Park.

This is an important link for all of Tasmania to the mainland and they sail daily to Melbourne. It is also the arrival point for many visitors to Tassie. (You should see the ferries turn around in the river - fascinating and the kids will love it.)

Lighthouse-topped Mersey Bluff is the most striking feature of Devonport. The red-andwhite-striped lighthouse was built in 1889 to aid navigation into the port. There are views over Bass Strait from this vantage point. Discover the history of the infamous Bass Strait by visiting The Bass Strait Maritime Museum. You can learn about the shipwrecks, natural history and trade that make up Tasmania’s history. You can even take the helm and captain a 1910 steamer into the Mersey River or guide her through the heads of Port Phillip Bay.

West Coast Round here, things aren’t like they are on the mainland. They’re not even like the rest of Tasmania!! This is a different place. You’ll encounter the raw, the untouched, the untamed. Once you’ve answered the call to come, you’ll make your own path – the West is the perfect place to explore with families. But be prepared – for any weather conditions and for wanting to stop every couple of kilometres to capture that next great scenic shot, or that great photo of your kids walking through wilderness, jumping in puddles or staring in amazement at the waterfalls. Allow plenty of time to get to the West Coast – and even longer to explore. There’s more to do here than many realise. Three days is good, five days is better, but seven days is best!!

Queenstown By any measure Queenstown is one of the wonders of the world. A historic mining town featuring a distinct cratered ‘moonscape’ that offers some of the most spectacular sunsets in the world.

The drive into Queenstown from the South is nothing short of spectacular as you wind your way down the 99-bends of the Gormanston Hill. Queenstown is home to the ABT Railway which opened in 1897 to transport copper to Strahan. Before the road to Hobart opened in 1932 the train was the only way to get ore to market. Visitors can now journey along the same tracks on board the West Coast Wilderness Railway. Spend your time visiting museums and art galleries and exploring Spion Kopf and Iron Blow Lookout, walking the mountain-edge track to Horsetail Falls and fishing (or just admiring the view) at Lake Burbury.

HANDY HINT Dress for comfort – and all weather. Your West Coast visit might include a warm 25-degree day, some wind, some rain and perhaps snow. Sometimes all in one day.

St Helens offers all the services of a busy town with a positively laid back vibe, and that’s just the way the locals and visitors like it. There’s no shortage of eateries and shops to hang out in.

It is also close to the perfect white sandy beaches, lichen-covered granite boulders and crystal clear waters of Binalong Bay and the Bay of Fires.
