What is self? Does it/’I’ exist, or are we merely fragments of our surroundings, constructed as ‘objects’ within a ‘context.’ As explained evidently by Roy F. Baumeister in his chapter of ‘The Self,’ in ‘The Handbook of Social Psychology,’ the simple, word ‘self’ is a word that everyone uses and is aware of, but no one defines or explains its meaning. “Even dictionaries are quite unhelpful for defining self.” He goes on to explore the notion that ‘self’ is not simply one entity, that it is in fact multiple factors that make up ones ‘self.’ Focusing on the concept of self-awareness, it could be argued that this is the largest fragment of self which determines the eternity of the being. Being selfaware, whether this be as an imaginary awareness, or an awareness of reality, can be said to define personality and self-perception. Through imagery, we can explore these concepts, effectively aiming to distinguish ourselves as beings from the space in which we occupy. In his book, ‘Brunelleschi, Lacan, Le Corbusier,’ Lorens Holm discusses the reality between the perspective, the image and the truth. From the analysis of the drawing by Saul Steinberg, ‘A View of the World from 9th Avenue,’ he explains that this is the ‘world according to New Yorkers,’ ultimately proposing that through perspective drawing and views, we can manipulate the observation of how we see ourselves or a specific place/space within the world. “We tend to forget that perspective imposes its own regime upon the world.

“Analogy expresses itself through a process of architectural design whose elements are preexisting and formally defined, but whose true meaning is unforeseen at the beginning and unfolds only at the end of the process. Aldo Rossi (1982) Aspiring toward completeness, this thesis explores a methodology at the interface between art and architectural practice, evidencing art as a pragmatic armature for designing. By proposing an idea of past and present existing contemporaneously with one another, the analogy of reading the city as a palimpsest emerges. Through fragmentation of historic maps, a taxonomy of abstract studies commence an innovative process toward designing architecture within the city of Mons, Belgium. An outcome based primarily on the methodology is enriched by demonstrating that these artworks can be developed into a coherent and meaningful architectural strategy.

The natural light of Japan is that of a low, muted and cold tone. As a land known for its mist and monochrome skies a certain sense of space is already established throughout Japan. Light of this kind however, is a difficult concept to grasp, as well as describe. To the outsider it will seem opaque and cold with its pervasive grey nature. Nevertheless, it is this distinctly sedated light that gives way to the opportunity for inward thought and personal reflection. With a monochrome and grey pallor, the feeling of peace and illumination can be felt throughout the subdued light of Japan. What better way to complement the design than with the use of concrete, a singular material that encapsulates the very quality of the light that subtly washes over the image furthering the emotion of a soothing, restful, almost static presence creating such serenity within the scene.
