The Regenration of Abandoned Life
To re-examine, to redesign, to rebuild, to reuse and to revitalize abandoned spaces where life has left them empty. Architecture is a ‘physical phenomenon and social undertaking’ implying the duality of its significance. It is therefore imminent to understand where architecture has failed society. Spaces such as parking lots, abandoned factories and old buildings are prime examples of such an occurrence. A simple mind looks at such spaces in a modern way and erases them from the urban fabric, just for them to be replaced by proposals lacking history, culture and understanding. Such an approach might address the physical phenomenon that is architecture, but it neglects to understand the social side. A more sustainable way to approach these situations is to identify ‘how spaces can be reconfigured to sustain different modalities of intimacy, desire, and domesticity.’ The proposed way to reach this sophistication is to design a new ‘collection of micro spaces,’ that aim to fulfil the societal need of ‘culture making’. To then create such rich spaces, it is important to utilize old buildings and abandoned sites which helps us ‘look to simple, smallscale, low-tech, low-cost, human-centred, gentle solutions.’ Beyond the obvious tactical smart urban design moves, the successful contemporary city is designed around the surrender to the continuous growth of cities and an understanding of the importance of cultural identity. Such a ‘true urban quality comes from accommodating density and diversity of building types and uses in the same place.’ The suggestive proposal of this thesis therefore aims to utilize the redesign of abandoned spaces to address issues of urban growth, cultural identity, and the regeneration of abandoned life by using an honest approach towards the relationship between architectural and human scale, the walkability of cities and the implementation of mixed-use programs into the restoration of the existing urban fabric.

Mitigating the Death of the Multi
The Macro Micro group research mapped house deprivation within Dundee Inner City and highlighted the necessity for an architectural intervention on the Hilltown Multi’s which ranks within the top 10% deprivation decile (Macro Micro, 2021). This thesis explores how to upgrade the declining social housing multi-typology to accommodate a diversity of contemporary user needs and ultimately provide a better alternative to demolition. When the Multi’s were first introduced to Dundee in the 1960’s, they were seen as a desirable place to live, synonymous with fresh air, light and modern facilities. They boasted views across the city and their compact footprint allowed for larger rooms, outdoor green space, and affordability. Sixty years on, they have deteriorated, and their reputation has mutated into undesirable low-cost housing. Resulting in the local authority turning to demolition, with only 11 of 44 multi’s remaining standing. Following Lacations and Vassal’s motto of “Never demolish, never remove or replace, always add, transform, and reuse!” (Lacaton & Vassal, Pritzker Prize 2021). This thesis explores ‘deep retrofitting’ as a vehicle to upgrade the four existing Hilltown Multi’s, through the lens of housing inequality and climate literacy. It considers the need to diversify the occupancy by providing a range of housing types and residency with adjustments to the organisation and layout of the blocks to improve the prospects of developing social sustainability. There is a particular interest in how these spatial configurations may affect the energy efficiency of the building and mitigate factors of house deprivation such as fuel poverty, but also other health- and age-related needs such as accessibility, which are apparent within the tower blocks. To gain insight into an appropriate intervention to the multi’s, this paper will explore other interventions to similar types of tower blocks. Whilst other interventions typically apply superficial upgrades, this thesis will look at deep retrofit as a vehicle to make the multi typology sustainable and to accom¬modate modern day living with a focus on energy & affordability.

Athens, Greece where the land is pure and untouched
The bliss environment is disturbed by the introduction of human evolution and intervention. The convenient location of the hill surrounded by rivers and streams becomes a place for the humans to gather and develop. The hill now has a name, The Acropolis. Architectural structures appear as places of protection and assembly. What is this now? The water from the streams turn to concrete, which floods the rest of the ground below the hill, turning the sacred land into a sea of concrete that flows far into the horizon. The humans appeared to have noticed but it is too late. In a confused attempt to preserve the ancient structures the concrete tap has been turned off, and now it is quieter all we can see is the Acropolis holding onto the last piece of floating land. Below the surface are the drowned ruins that the humans are ‘saving’. Protective glass seals are being placed over the historic structures to preserve them, as they are now frail. They are just there to be admired in their preserved state, serving as a reminder of what life used to be [referencing the new Acropolis Museum built over archaeological ruins]. We now have a two-faced city. The working ancient and new city, and the abandoned city; The structures which were not sealed in time as they were disliked, high maintenance, ugly, ill and dying. They were going to serve no purpose in the new city so why would the humans keep them? The problem is, they did not save them, nor did they dispose of them. Now they lay on the seabed in their decaying state. The pollution of the abandoned structures is becoming too intense that nobody wants to live even near them anymore. So how are they going to fix the problem when the humans are such hoarders? Even when it is harmful to them, they insist that the structures serve a purpose - it is up to us for that purpose to be realised...

The ‘Thinking Machine’ explores the problem and the solution between traditional architectural frameworks and the everchanging nature of society. While the physical form of the ‘Thinking Machine’ represents the immediate disconnection between society and the built environment, the holistic process of making the ‘Thinking Machine’ is symbolic of the solution highlighting the need for architectural frameworks and society need to work in harmony.

| Conclusion, Three is a Magic Number Every letter in the alphabet has a predetermined non-hierarchical order, meaning no letter is more valuable than the others. Only when we combine them can we form words of value and meaning, and the whole is understood precisely as it appears. Looking at the sentence below you’ll still be able to make meaning of a disordered combination of letters in words as, ´The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ diverge from the Vitruvian triad in that “utilitas, firmitas, and venustas” 51 (as relating to commodity, firmness, and delight) constitute a wholeness, all dependent on each other to produce an ordered whole. As utilitas and firmitas pertain to ‘the Ugly’, as ambiguous terms, and venustas to ‘the Good’, the Vitruvian triad neglects ‘the Bad’ entirely, in comparison to The Ugly Trinity, which acknowledges that only an ambiguous condition can manifest in a matter of time and as a matter out of place. What is deemed as ‘the Bad’ in the present state of Dundee will therefore be praised as beautiful over time as to acknowledge ‘the Bad’ would be an act of honesty, which pertain more towards ‘the Good’ than ‘the Ugly’. As previously discussed “The moment of
moment of ugliness … is the shattering of the subject´s phantasy of what makes up the object.” 52 To propose a manifestation of ‘the Ugly’ in the form of a megalith hugging the city’s most prominent landmark is nothing more than criticising the banal ignorance of a city’s depth, benefitting from its doomed phantasy. Dundee and its dual facades have served as a great metaphor for Cousins´ points on ugliness. The circular mega form is a form of ideal city; its location, visible from every corner of the city, is a statement of monumental scale shouting ‘ the ugly exists and will never be hidden again’. It’s stripped of façades; as the prospective future will have drowned its trademark along with any city identity invested in thus far; and finally, both its aesthetic presence and programme are out of place and fashion, recalling anachronistic language. The complexity discussed in this thesis will make a final attempt to challenge ideas with the following thoughts. Why is the alphabet in order?

trehe is evnecide to sgesgut taht we’re renognsiicg the saphe of wdros. “Tihs is why mxeid-csae txet, scuh as ateaitnnrlg cpas, is so dliuifcft to raed - it rldcilaay chgaens the saphe of a wrod, eevn wehn all the lretets are in the rihgt pclae.” 53 The importance of questioning order has to do with how to evoke imagination for intangible possibilities, such as Dundee in two hundred years’ time. ‘The Ugly’, a condition of error, is a disordered state which only the imagination can order in a comprehensive manner. And, to make a literal and humorous point, ‘the Good’ and ‘the Bad’ are so obedient to their finite states that they appear unaffected even after following the principles of ‘the Ugly’.
The good, the bad and the ulgy.
As long as the first and last letters are in the correct positions, there is room for experimentation because their shape is identifiable, allowing one to predict their meaning. The letters are analogues to the finite conditions of ‘the Good’ and ‘the Bad’, whereas ‘the Ugly’ is the ambiguity, the gross error and the infinite conception in which the imagination for a future is evoked and where unrealized forms and essential articulations of urban reality manifest as tangible.
