A change of scenery Having lived in some of the world’s metropolises, I know that the rhythm of life in such places can be hectic, and it requires a certain amount of stamina to survive the everyday hustle and bustle. Sometimes, a change of scenery can do wonders, which is, I suppose, the universal purpose of a holiday. In Levi, you will be greeted by splendid contrasts. Every season – Christmas, the heart of winter, spring, summer, autumn and the first snow – is unique and even more different than the last. Levi is also very easy to reach by plane. The Kittilä Airport is only a 15-minute drive from the centre of the fell village. Jussi Töyrylä CEO Levi Tourist Office
In Levi, you can recharge your batteries alone, as a couple or in a larger group. The atmosphere around the fells is genuinely healthy, since you will be breathing some of the purest air in Europe.
Your programme can comprise simple peace and quiet or a whirlwind of activities, or even a balanced combination of them both. Regardless of the time of year, it is easy to build a holiday programme that is all you. There are countless activities and sports, as well as a long list of quality programmes and services. In one week, you will have experienced a great deal – perhaps, even learned a new hobby! In a way, you might even say that the fell village enables you to experience several holidays at the same time. One visit, however, is rarely enough. Many find themselves returning year after year. The nature in Lapland holds innumerable wonders to discover all year round. Outdoors, you can do nearly anything that comes to mind, and indoors, there is plenty to keep you occupied as well, such as a trip to the spa, bowling lanes, movies, indoor recreation and sports, live music and a whole host of restaurant services. A great deal of effort has been made to ensure that children have fun in Levi, including guided programmes intended specifically for the younger members of the family. The weekly programmes for the winter and summer season, for example, contain unbelievably fun activities for the whole family. If you have the chance to visit Levi at different times of the year, it is definitely worth doing. Levi has character enough for every month of the year. The frosty nights, star-filled skies and dramatic Northern Lights in mid-winter give way to the sunny, sparkling snowdrifts of spring, and later, to the mystical nightless nights of summer. In the autumn, the circus of colour in Lapland serves as a unique opening act for the first snow of the season. And soon, the pure white blanket of snow will be ready to host enthusiastic travellers. Accommodation in the area ranges from cottages to hotel rooms and holiday flats, whether you are looking for a rustic environment or full-blown luxury. Visit Levi.fi online to get more ideas and to conveniently book your transportation, accommodation and weekly programme for your holiday in Levi. You can start by getting inspired for your Levi experience by looking through this magazine. Enjoy a pleasant read. And the scenery that awaits you!

Four different seasons of Lapland Snowy winter, sunny spring, flowering summer and colourful autumn – the four seasons each offer their own type of a Lapland experience. Which season in Lapland would you like to try?
The lustre of wintery snowdrifts For many, Lapland brings to mind snow, Northern Lights and speeding through the snow on skis. And it’s no wonder, since winter certainly offers something unique and absolutely worth experiencing. Even if you still haven’t found your inner winter athlete, Lapland won’t leave you cold (despite the freezing temperatures). Simply just relaxing and admiring the natural wintry surroundings is also a great way to enjoy Lapland. The indescribable beauty of the fells, the amazing snowdrifts and a sky coloured by intense cold will make you feel as though you have stepped into a painting. If you are looking for an active holiday, Lapland is the right place. You would be hardpressed to find a winter sport that you can’t do in Lapland. Cross-country skiing, the national sport of Finns, is easy to learn and soon you too will be racing down the trails with frost on your hair. Winter is the busiest season in Lapland, with plenty of hustle and bustle surrounding its ski resorts, in particular. But no matter where you go, you are still guaranteed to find undisturbed nature, silence and serenity. The best winter has to offer: Wonderful wintry scenery, countless activities, Northern Lights, great flight connections, and a bustling, international atmosphere. Activities: Downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, husky safaris, reindeer safaris, ice fishing, snowmobile rides, spas and pampering treatments, horseback riding, snowshoeing, Northern Lights excursions… to name only a few.
LeviDays | 6
The lappish Sun brings the spring The snow begins to melt in Lapland in the late spring, and so you can continue to enjoy winter activities on into May. Spring in Lapland also provides you with the summer’s first tan lines, since the Sun and glistening snowdrifts will quickly bring colour to your face. The warm Sun encourages the most enthusiastic skiers to race down the slopes in tees and shorts. For many, spring is the proper and only time to visit Lapland, since the combination of the Sun and the incredible landscape is irresistible. The phenomenal spring weather also draws ice fishing enthusiasts to Lapland, since the warmth of the Sun enables them to fish on the ice from morning to evening. If you are interested in trying this most beloved of the Finnish forms of fishing, make sure to find an old ice fishing pro who can give you tips on the best fishing sites in the area. You can tell one from his tanned face and thick ice fishing overalls. Once the snow begins to melt, the peak tourist season is over. Life in Lapland slowly returns to normal and the fells begin to see
the arrival of, in particular, travellers looking for peace and quiet. This period of time is a good option if you are looking to travel in a less expensive season and want to enjoy the nature of Lapland by foot or on the saddle of a bike. The best spring has to offer: The sunny days and ongoing winter activities of early spring. The great accommodation deals and peaceful holiday atmosphere of late spring. It is definitely worth experiencing Lapland’s pure nature and its reawakening to a new spring! Activities: All of the winter activities from skiing to snowshoeing can generally continue until mid-May depending on the year and amount of snow. Once the snow has melted, these activities give way to hiking, mountain biking and excursions into the amazing forests and fells.

A summer full of life “Blooming in Lapland goes by fast and quickly…” This is the first line of the famous ‘Summer in Lapland’ poem by the Finnish poet Eino Leino. Lapland’s summer is short, but uniquely impressive. The nightless night and around-the-clock light are especially magnificent. Venture out on a nighttime forest trek and take a moment to breathe in the purest air in Europe – it will be an experience you will never forget! Summertime in Lapland also offers plenty to see and do. Summer guests in Levi are treated with, among other things, a specially designed weekly programme of activities from canoe safaris to white water rafting in a tube and night hikes.
LeviDays | 8
Finland has traditional Everyman’s rights, which permit free access to roam, camp and gather the bounty of the forests. With this freedom comes responsibility as well; you must ensure not to harm the nature and leave litter behind. Finns are extremely particular about this, so please remember to clean up carefully after yourself. It is also easy to get lost in the forests, so it is important to carry a map with you. The forests of Lapland are like treasure troves toward the end of the summer, when the mushrooms rise up from the ground. Mushrooms are a highly regarded delicacy in Finland, and the places where the mushrooms grow best are always kept under one’s hat. If you decide to go out looking for mushrooms,
remember to take along a mushroom guidebook, since some of them can be highly poisonous. The best summer has to offer: The nightless night and summertime nature, less expensive accommodation and a wide array of summer activities. Lots of programmes designed for children. Activities: River rafting, canoeing, fishing, hiking, camping, horseback riding, the Adventure Park, mountain biking, golf , disc golf, spas and pampering treatments, hunting, berry and mushroom picking, visits to the husky and reindeer farms… for a start.
The autumn fells in a burst of colour The autumn in Lapland is famous for its brilliant displays of colour, as nature prepares itself for the onset of winter. Visitors can marvel at nature’s own miracle in the form of varying shades of red, orange and yellow. Autumn is the ideal season for wanderers and hikers in Lapland. The autumn display particularly attracts adult trekkers who enjoy wandering in the wilderness for long pe-
riods with only their backpacks and sleeping bags to keep them company. The most courageous travellers overnight under the stars or in rugged shelters, but for first time visitors, we would recommend shorter outings with a guide and, for example, accommodation in a fully-equipped cottage. In the evening, why not try one of the local restaurants. They are popular meeting points, where visitors and residents alike can enjoy live music, and even get the chance to test their own vocal skills…
The best autumn has to offer: Brilliant colourful scenery, various hiking and camping opportunities, a wide range of programmes and activities. Activities: All of the same activities as during the summer season, hiking and walks in the forests, hunting and many events, such as the Ruska Marathon race and the Staalo theatre festival. laura hyle • kimmo salminen, loiste

What kind of a holidaymaker are you?
Holiday. Simply saying the word out loud makes you feel good. A holiday can, however, mean something quite different to you than to your neighbour. While you might want to bounce from one activity to another, your friend may simply be looking to laze around from morning to evening. Take this simple test to see what kind of holidaymaker you are! 1. What do you normally pack in your bag for a holiday? a) Everything that is listed in Wikipedia under sports equipment. I pack the car trailer and off I go! b) Something casual, something for the after ski party and a good book. c) Wool socks, easy (ready-made) food and a pillow. Everything else is unnecessary. 2. Where do you like to stay? a) In the centre of all the action! The name of the game is easy access - the adventure begins right outside my door. b) In the peace and quiet, with a sofa, TV and sauna no more than a few steps away. I should also be able to see the spa from where I’m staying. c) Anything goes as long as it’s easy and, if I want, I can still curl up in my sweatpants on the couch and snack on Lappish delicacies.
LeviDays | 10
Take the test to see whether, as a holidaymaker, you prefer an activity-rich environment or a haven of relaxation. 3. Who do you like to take along on your holiday? a) Anyone who wants to come with me! I’ll send out a group message through Facebook and see who shows up. b) Anyone who can keep up with me. If you are ready for fast and extreme experiences, hop in! c) I still haven’t found any better holiday companion than myself, so why would I even think about any group holiday. Travel companions just make a lot of noise, draw up timetables and plan every minute of every day. Yuck!
5. Which food do you prefer on holiday: A self-made, pit-roasted meal; an easy pasta dish; or a visit to the nearest fast food restaurant? a) Fast food or à la carte, it doesn’t matter as long as it’s placed before me, already cooked and piping hot. b) Pit-roasted meat, of course! We’ll dig the hole ourselves and get the meat by hiking 20 km to a nearby farm. That is what it’s all about! c) Pasta is always good. It’s quick to make and satisfies a growling tummy.
4. What time do you wake up on holiday? a) I pay no attention to the time when I’m on holiday. I wake up when I please, with a slow and pleasant pace. Just one more minute… ahhhh…. b) At the crack of dawn, so that there is time to do everything I planned. Sleeping is overrated, and there is plenty of time for that after the holiday is over. c) I wake up after I have slept 8 long hours on a feathery cloud. Usually, at the latest, when my friends are getting their breakfast together. I am feeling a bit peckish myself…
6. Describe your ideal day on holiday. a) Good friends, good atmosphere, good food and fun activities. That’s my recipe for a great day! b) Wake up at 5 a.m. Breakfast at 5.30 a.m. Hitting the slopes or hiking trails by 6 a.m. A snack at 9 a.m. and then back to the action. A quick lunch at 11 a.m. and then onto the next extreme experience. Then at 1 p.m. … c) My ideal day on holiday only involves a blanket, a pillow and the glow of the fire. Oh how I love the wonderful peace and quiet!
Scoring: 1. a) 3 b) 2 c) 1 2. a) 3 b) 1 c) 2 3. a) 2 b) 3 c) 1
4. a) 1 b) 3 c) 2 5. a) 1 b) 3 c) 2 6. a) 2 b) 3 c) 1
6-8 points: Lazy Logan The word holiday alone makes your eyelids droopy. For you, a holiday means lounging about with no hurry to go anywhere, and continued relaxation from morning to night. You aren’t motivated to do even the simplest activities, and you would refer to let others take care of the necessary tasks. You enjoy being pampered, eating out at fancy restaurants and relaxing in front of a fire. You once accidentally booked a recreational holiday filled with exercise, but you blame that on temporary insanity caused by a crush. You prefer to luxuriate in solitude during your holidays, since the noise of others has a tendency to disturb your precious moments of relaxation. If you were an animal, you would definitely be a sloth. For you, we recommend an unhurried cross-country ski trek and a moment petting the local husky dogs or, during the summer, a leisurely hike and an Icelandic horse trek. 9-15 points: Laid-back Lisa You are a multi-tasking holidaymaker; everything goes and goes well! You don’t bother about timetables; you want to be able to come and go as you please. Your aim is to do enough of all the things that you don’t have time for or are unable to do in your everyday life, including activities, interests, lounging, enjoying new delicacies and travelling. You don’t have any difficulty getting into the holiday spirit; all it takes is activating the on-holiday message in your e-mail and shutting off your phone. Sometimes you have trouble deciding what all to do on your holiday. Especially since you need to leave time for simply lying around and contemplating life. How would you like to go snowshoeing and visit a reindeer farm? If your party arrives in Levi during a season with no snow, a definite hit for the group would be a ride down the rolling rapids or a boat excursion. 16-18 points: Active Alex For you, a holiday doesn’t mean restful moments on a sofa or admiring a campfire, but rather high-power action from start to finish. The more you get to do, the better it is. Snowboarding, river rafting, downhill cycling and snowmobile safaris – you’re ready to try it all, and more than once even! The main thing is to ensure that each day is completely filled with activities from dawn to dusk. You don’t even sleep at night, but spend your time doing dry runs in front of the mirror in preparation for the next day’s adventures. Have you, by the way, noticed that lately your friends have been super busy whenever you have tried to tempt them to join you on one of your ‘holidays’? Maybe try taking it down a notch, since no one can keep up with a tornado! For you, we would naturally recommend our more racy sports, but to balance it all out, you should also visit the spa, indulge in muscle-relaxing treatments and dine at one of the fine restaurants that Levi has to offer. laura hyle • avalon

Great natural shapes. Gets a great deal of positive feedback! • Tunneli lift (lift no. 14) and its adjacent pistes = varying hills, popular with boarders.
“Experienced skiers and boarders will be challenged on these pistes.” • Gondola area: G.1, G.2, G.3 • Natural snow pistes and off-track possibilities.

The first FIS Ski World Cup race in Levi took place in 2004, and since 2006, Levi has hosted the annual opening races for both men’s and ladies’ slalom seasons. How did the tour find its’ northernmost location?
Mikko Saarinen, Secretary General of the World Cup Levi, was kind enough to shed light on the Lapland race’s epic story. He has witnessed a big part of it with his own eyes, as he has been on the organizing team since 2006. But the first chapters of the story were written much earlier.
What was said to be delusions of grandeur… In the mid 90s, Finland and an international alpine race event weren’t discussed in the same sentence. Professional alpine skiing was quite in its infancy in a country that has virtually no mountains. There are, however, two things worth knowing about Lappish people: they are true winter sport enthusiasts, and every once in a while

We wouldn’t be here without our own alpine stars. You cannot organize a World Cup race if you don’t have any locals at the start gate.
they get really abnormal ideas. So a thought, megalomaniac some would say, was born that maybe some day the event would become a reality at Levi. Then, in 1996, FIS Technical Delegate Erik Dahlberg visited Levi. Together with local spokespersons Tapio Kokko and Jouni Palosaari, he went to check out what then was a wooded slope on the southwest side of the Levi Fell. It looked so promising that the idea started to evolve into a true vision of the Levi Black race course. Simultaneously, word about the vision started to spread internationally, as people like Martti Uusitalo, who assembled the ladies’ national alpine skiing team, spoke about it abroad. Giant leap In 1999, Finnish alpine skiing icon Kalle Palander won the slalom world championship and Finland entered the pro alpine skiing world. In June of the same year, it was agreed in Levi that Levi Black would be built with a gondola lift and lighting. Construction work proceeded swiftly and, by the Millennium, the gondola was up and running. Only 11 months later, in November 2000, the
megalomaniac idea was realized when the men’s slalom and giant slalom European Cup tour arrived at Levi. The event organization went well, the race course worked perfectly. After the successful event, FIS got more and more interested. In the following months, Levi welcomed many delegates, while prominent Finnish winter sports figures, Mr. Uusitalo and the former Prime Minister Esko Aho, to name a few, were busy answering questions about Levi’s readiness to organize a World Cup race. It is also important to recognize the people that dedicated their time and travel mileage to learn everything about World Cup race arrangements. People in Levi weren’t resting on their laurels either, but continued building an infrastructure to support racing events. The next event, ladies’ European Cup race, was organized in 2001, the same year when Levi was also nominated as Aspen’s backup for the FIS Ski World Cup calendar. Rags to riches Investments in Levi, people’s dedication and successful events all indicated that Levi was a credible candidate for the FIS calendar. The hard work

paid off in June 2002 when it was announced that Levi would organize the ladies’ slalom World Cup race in February 2004. Needless to say, things got even busier. The World Cup required more accommodation space, logistics, racing infrastructures that met with FIS standards, and so on. As characteristic of the organizing team’s attitude, 1000 lux race course lighting that exceeded all requirements was put in place; just to ensure that race broadcasting would succeed with the best possible quality. “The World Cup project was a big thing in Finland, and a huge one for Lapland. People were willing to help, media was eager to report, and there
there was a spirit of fellowship around the event – and there still is was a spirit of fellowship around the event – and there still is,” says Mikko Saarinen. Careful planning, dedication, and people’s true enthusiasm were present in the first World Cup Levi. And when rising Finnish slalom star Tanja Poutiainen won her first World Cup race, there were no limits to the joy. A rag to riches story was born and “the best (and only) Ski World Cup organizing team in Finland” had shown that one doesn’t always need the Alps to enjoy professional alpine skiing. Establishing a position “The World Cup Levi organizing team has never settled with a good performance, but always aims to reach the next step,” Mikko Saarinen states. This was true already after the first World Cup race. When Mikko joined the crew, the World Cup Levi was taking a year off (that’s typical for all new World Cup locations), but the organizing team was anything but on a sabbatical. Instead, they carefully investigated FIS race calendar, locations, media and partner requirements, and came up with a proposal that established Levi’s position in the World Cup. Namely, there was a gap of 6 weeks between the Cup opening in Sölden in October, and the next races in the US. This gap hadn’t been easy to fill, as there hadn’t been a location that had real snow in November. It was in everyone’s interest to find such a place, and Levi was it. In March 2006, Levi hosted the ladies’

slalom World Cup, but it was in November 2006 when World Cup Levi found its ultimate place with both the men’s and ladies’ World Cup slalom opening races. They were a success. There was snow, a top quality race course, and everything from the logistics to other arrangements worked. And has worked ever since, albeit the two years when it didn’t snow in November, not even in Finland. What makes the Lapland race special? World Cup Levi is also referred to as the Lapland race. “This is a very important point. World Cup Levi is an event that is shared by all of Lapland, and indeed, all of Finland. Levi acts as the venue, but there’s so much more in the background from investors to volunteers.” “It is crucial that the Lapps, in particular, feel that this is their thing. It makes World Cup Levi so special. We have our own culture here, which is a bit exotic and very welcoming, and that has been a true selling point. Besides, it wouldn’t be called a World Cup if it wouldn’t include different types of racing venues. Levi is the only place where athletes, at the start gate, see nothing but flat countryside around the fell. It’s a nice change for them.” Throughout the years, the World Cup Levi organizing team has received a lot of positive feedback, for arrangements in general and for the very fluent logistics, as it takes some 4 hours to fly from Central Europe to Levi, and 15 minutes to transfer from the airport to the centre, where everything from Levi Black to accommodation and restaurants are within walking distance. Innovative teams and themes “The World Cup Levi core organizing team has remained small, consisting of 10 people, but they are innovative, dynamic, and efficient,” notes Mikko. “And as said, it’s not just the core team, but also the dedicated work of the whole group of alpine skiing enthusiasts, investors, locals and volunteers. It’s highly appreciated that Finns do what they promise to do, and keep things simple and working,” he says to sum up some of the core advantages of World Cup Levi. The organizing team also wants to be on the forefront in developing its own race, and the World Cup in general. In 2007, investments were made to further improve Levi Black. Every year there’s a new theme for the event, such as families or supplementary events. Levi was also the first location in FIS history to offer a mobile application for the event. World Cup Levi’s significance to Lapland’s business is, of course, considerable. As an indication of this, it received “Lapland’s regional developer of the year” award in 2012. Overall, World Cup Levi is a perfect example of determination and the famous Finnish sisu, loosely translated as “when there is a will, there is a way”. It will certainly be interesting to see which delusions of grandeur the organizing team and Lappish people will carry out next! johanna still, teemu kytövuori • jkpromo, levi

In Finland, the horses also race on a frozen lake during the spring. In Levi anyway. How does trotting succeed on an icy track? The track isn’t even tilted on the curves like the regular trotting tracks used during the summer season. The icy conditions definitely require certain adjustments, such as gentler curves in the track, shorter straights and the use of ice-studded horseshoes. Grip is necessary, since this is one sport that requires remarkable speed. At the end of March, racing horses from everywhere between Lapland and Southern Finland make an appearance on the icy Lake Levijärvi. With a bit of luck, there may even be some four-legged stars from the international trotting tracks in Europe. As per tradition, the programme includes something for all ages, particularly at, for example, the family event held by the Front Pistes! Ice races are especially exciting for the audience and Toto bet players, since the exceptional conditions also come with surprises. Such exciting thrills are impossible to script in advance. You, too, can make a Toto bet on an Arctic Horse Race in Levi. If you are not familiar with betting on the races, you can ask for advice from a more experienced player or simply rely on the quick and easy Salama games drawn up by the experts. You can read more about the different betting possibilities at Fintoto’s website, Fintoto.fi. Horseracing is one of Finland’s most popular sports; the events attract nearly one million spectators each year. The unique race in Levi, alone, also draws thousands of visitors. In 2014, these exciting races will return to the ice on Lake Levijärvi for the fourth time.

Levi’s Mega May Day Celebrations is a spectacular spring event that you shouldn’t miss.

Skiing events can be unbelievably fun. Come and test that theory at the LeviLoppet event in April 2014. An open skiing event for everyone will be held in spring 2014 on the icy tracks in Levi. The best part of the event is that it isn’t all about winning; participation, red cheeks and smiling faces are the things that make this event so popular. Even if you aren’t an active participant in the event, it’s equally as fun to take in the exciting atmosphere and cheer for the skiers from the sidelines.
The overall event starts on Saturday evening with a sprint. The participants in the sprint are primarily three-person teams comprising Finland’s top skiers, rising stars and representatives of the business world. One option is to plan a company trip to Levi as a way of inspiring team spirit. Then you can consider whether to sign up with your personnel to participate in Sunday’s LeviLoppet series for companies, where the idea is to ski as many rounds as possible during one hour. In 2013, the winning team skied an impressive 42 rounds. Actively follow the Leviloppet.fi site during the spring to see updates on the distances and courses as well as the programme for the whole event. To get in the right frame of mind, start by checking out the photo gallery, which has images from earlier LeviLoppet events.
Finnish May Day is an experience that suits anyone looking for a wildly fun party. If you and your friends are planning an unforgettable trip in honour of, for example, your graduation, Levi’s Mega May Day Celebrations is just the place. The fell village has a great deal going on throughout the duration of the Mega May Day event. The May Day Parade is definitely something you can’t afford to miss. Design your own unique May Day costume and join right in with the hilarious group. The parade winds through the heart of Levi, stopping off at several tactical points. And the fun continues on into the evening; let it take you where it will! It is a good idea to make a well-thoughtout and detailed costume that stands out. The best costumes will gain the respect of the crowd and will be awarded prizes! Let’s not forget, of course, the traditional Long Running competition, the children’s programme, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and the after ski parties.

igloo experience
It helps though if a soft bed has been laid for you amidst these natural wonders with only an arched glass roof to separate you from the star-filled skies. That’s an ideal place to curl up under the cosy covers and, for example, to snuggle up to a loved one to admire the midnight sun or the playful patterns of the Northern Lights. “It does seem, indeed, that during the summer, in particular, no one in Lapland wants to use their time for sleeping,” states Kristiina Kylmälahti, Managing Director of Golden Crown – Levi Igloos. “On the other hand, many people come here specifically for the peace and relaxa-
The new Superior igloo was built with special attention to the needs of families with children. All of the igloos have a small kitchen area and bathroom, but the primary focus is on the large, thermoinsulated panoramic windows, which make guests feel as one with all the natural wonders around them. If it happens that no Northern Lights appear during the visit, it is still an amazing site to marvel at the wonder of a swirling snow storm or the spectacular array of stars that refuse to be dimmed by the nearby lights of the town. The Northern Lights Luxury House is equipped with its own, adjustable northern-light illumination system.

Eye masks are one standard feature of all the igloos to help our guests fall asleep during the bright moments of the year,” Kristiina adds. A crazy idea – a perfect realisation Lapland offers a great range of travel accommodation options. There is everything from small, rugged cabins to all-inclusive luxury alternatives. But an igloo? Where did that unique idea come from? “Levi Igloos is one man’s dream turned reality. That man is my father, Tauno Mäkelä,” Kristiina explains. “My father has owned land in this area for a long time, and when I was young, we spent a great deal of time here. He was so absolutely sold on the scenery and atmosphere here that he thought long and hard of a way to draw on the advantages that the area has to offer in order to share the experience with others in as authentic a way as possible.” Finally, Tauno Mäkelä found an architect and builders that had the specialised expertise to carry out his demanding vision. In 2008, four igloos were erected in the fell, each totalling 23 square metres in size, and accompanied by the Northern Lights Luxury House, which is built half underground and is intended for a larger group of guests. As of the end of autumn 2013, there were 12 igloos altogether.
“We still don’t have any restaurant in the area, but a variety of meals can be ordered directly to your igloo,” Kristiina states. “All guests also have access to a shared Lapp hut, in which guests can socialise and, perhaps, even grill a sausage over the cosy fire.” You just might get hooked Kristiina Kylmälahti states that nearly everyone who has visited the Levi Igloos has been surprised by the level of visibility. The fact that the untouched nature extends as far as the eye can see from the windows of one’s own igloo can be a very intoxicating experience. “It is not at all unusual that, for example, a couple who has spent their wedding night here decides that they want to experience it all again during another season.” The Levi Igloos are, in many cases, reserved for different types of special occasions or celebrations. Despite that, there is still plenty of room for those of all ages, travelling either on their own or through a travel agency, who are looking for an exquisite natural experience and who have a love of the outdoors. “Even when we have a lot of guests at the same time, there is an overall peaceful and quiet atmosphere here,” assures Kristiina. “The landscape simply takes your breath away and individual privacy is respected.” For more information: Levi.fi, Leviniglut.fi mia keurulainen • golden crown

Waking up to the
At Christmastime in Lapland, magic is all around you. Christmas Eve has so much to offer, with its sparkling snowdrifts and bright star-filled skies. The whole family will wake up with excitement! Children eagerly await Santa’s visit, while their parents enjoy the delightful Christmas atmosphere. The morning’s rice porridge bubbles away on the cooker, carefully disguising the one almond hidden inside. Who will get it? This traditional Finnish guessing game is just one fun and entertaining part of the overall magical holiday atmosphere. After getting your fill of the breakfast, you can begin to decorate the fragrant Christmas tree, if you haven’t already done so the night before. Well in advance of your visit, ask the Levi Tourist Information about the chance to have a real Christmas tree placed in your rental cottage or hotel room for your visit.
Once the tree is decorated and sparkly, it might be a suitable time to get some fresh air, while it’s still light out. Why not take a winter walk, trek through the forests on snowshoes or glide along the well-maintained ski tracks – get a little colour in your cheeks. To really get your blood flowing, you could hop on, for example, a snowmobile! For more information about the winter activities, visit Levi.fi

LeviDays | 30
Whisper your wishes in Santa’s ear It is a well known fact that Santa Claus lives with Mrs. Claus, the elves and his reindeer in Finnish Lapland. In Levi, you have the opportunity to talk face-to-face with the whitebearded man himself, or you might even get a chance to sit upon his knee. This is your chance to ensure, in person, that Santa knows about your most important gift wishes. A Christmas Eve programme is organised each year in the area close to Zero Point. Santa Claus, for example, makes a stop at Kids’ Land, at the base of the front pistes next to Zero Point. So that’s the place to be around noon. You should definitely also make your way to the nearby Levi Christmas Market, where beautifully lit stands are set up to sell local Lappish products. The Christmas Market is the ideal place to find amazing souvenirs to take home! The Christmas Market is open until 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve (keep an eye on the weather, because the Market will be closed if the temperature drops below -20°C). From the heart of Levi, Santa will then move on with his band of elves to his workshop nearby. Once there, they will continue their Christmastime activities, such as baking and wrapping packages. If the little
ones still want to see Santa later on in the evening, parents can contact the Levi Tourist Information to invite Santa to stop by at their cottage or hotel room. Santa wants to have the time to visit everyone on Christmas Eve, but it is wise to book a visit, since he is a very busy guy. Traditional foods full of flavour Christmas in the fell village is abound with relaxed spirit, warmth and joy, and the spread on the Christmas table is no exception. The restaurants in Levi lay out a wonderful array of traditional Finnish Christmas food. Simply the thought of the juicy Christmas ham, delicious lightly-salted salmon, fresh red beet salad and rich root casseroles is mouth-watering. Once the family has seen Santa and enjoyed an array of outdoor activities, it’s the ideal moment to sit down to a warm, sumptuous meal. Be careful not to get too full tasting all those delicious dishes, because you must leave room for dessert. Often, the meal is followed by plum soup or quark, cake with fruit or dates, and, let’s not forget, Christmas tarts and gingerbreads. While enjoying your dessert, you can also sip a steaming cup of mulled wine or juice. The wintry nature is a world of wonder After a tasty meal, it might be a good time, for example, to step outside and try to spot the magnificent Northern Lights, if the night happens to be clear. The further you are from the equator, the more common it is to see these dancing patterns of colourful light. In Finland, Lapland is your best bet to see them. Even if you don’t see the Northern Lights, however, the landscape of the fells will take your breath away. You can admire the radiant display above you at the same time you
study the details of the snow and ice structures built by the professionals of, for example, the Snow Village or the Levi Ice Gallery at Luvattumaa. The sculptures are beautifully illuminated at night to intermingle with the bright stars shining overhead. You just have to see these unique Northern works of art for yourself! The calm of Christmas night descends on the fells In the late evening, a crackling fire and the soft steam of a Christmas sauna await. The Finnish Christmas sauna is characterised by its quiet and soothing atmosphere. The temperature is kept at a pleasant level by the occasional toss of water on the heated stones of the stove. History tells that, in ancient times, the Finnish peasantry might heat up the sauna already during the previous night to make sure that everyone had the chance to bathe while it was light. One had to sit silently in the sauna, because it was believed that it was the way to ensure that the mosquitoes wouldn’t be a problem the next summer. Nowadays, people enhance the atmosphere in the Christmas sauna with specific sauna scents or candles. After the relaxing, cleansing rejuvenation of the sauna, the whole family can sit down together to admire each other’s gifts, play a game or curl up to watch a film. This is a time for taking it easy, pampering yourself with a warm cup of mulled wine with gingerbreads and simply enjoying the magic of Lapland with all your heart. On Christmas Eve, it is completely acceptable, even expected, that everyone snacks on the foods from the Christmas table into the wee hours of the morning… Someone might even sneak to the fridge once everyone else has finally gone to sleep. The arresting beauty of winter also showcases displays of talent. Welcome to a kingdom built of snow and ice.
Finland’s Lapland has always been the ideal location for snow and ice constructions. The arctic conditions offer a chillingly spectacular playground, which has inspired an enormous amount of different – as well as significant scientific – expertise related to the cold. It isn’t a coincidence that Lapland is, for example, a popular testing site for cold technology. The focus of this article, however, is the beauty of the frosty winter itself. During the winter season, those walking around Levi and the surrounding areas are in for a delightful frosty feast for the eyes. Nature plays a key role in snow and ice construction, since it provides the raw materials to this demanding handicraft. The process of building with snow and ice calls for a variety of different skills and tools. The ice blocks that are illuminated in crystal clear, mystical blue or green light are often extracted from the frozen local waters by means of a specialised method. So, don’t be surprised if you see locals extracting icy cubes from a nearby river. Or transporting enormous loads of snow to a nearby site.
Levi Ice Gallery Luvattumaa The charming Levi Ice Gallery Luvattumaa is different each year. The ice and snow structure, which measures a total of 10,000 square metres, consists of a snow hotel, ice bar, ice art gallery and chapel. For those who enjoy knowing trivial details, we’ll also tell you that Levi Ice Gallery Luvattumaa is known for its original ski boot dances. The lighting in and around the constructions is provided by energy-friendly LED lights. The site remains open until April, weather permitting.
Idea + skill = realisation Different types of machines are often necessary when making larger constructions, but the old wood planer blades, gouges, different knives, hand milling machines and chisels found in every ice artists’ toolbox are just as efficient. Skilled artisans have their own personal tool arsenals. Those who have more experience also have a few tricks up their sleeves, which they won’t divulge easily. If you are curious, you could always ask. The greatest resource for working with snow and ice and the formation of different elements is skilful hands and an industrious mind. These are essential for putting the final touches on a visual wonderland. Tourists visiting Levi have the opportunity to enjoy the wintry magic at two enchanting snow and ice displays. They even have functional elements, like slides and such, which you can try out first hand.

Snow Village (Lainion Lumikylä) Each year, the Snow Village is rebuilt to form a unique venue that upholds and highlights the magical essence of the area. Weather permitting, the construction work starts in early November with snowmaking machines. The snow is used to cover an area of approximately two hectares with a complex consisting of hotel rooms, suites, an ice bar and restaurant and ice sculptures – all made from pure water. The site remains open until April, weather permitting.

Workaholism
as a ‘character flaw’ It’s been twenty-odd years since Apocalyptica’s Eicca Toppinen and his bandmates got the idea of playing Metallica songs on the cello. Even though it’s been a while since their first performance, the process of creating a song still puts the composer’s own self-esteem and psyche to the test.
The cello rock group Apocalyptica took a year-long sabbatical, which ends during the summer of 2013. For at least one member of the group, the year ended up being an even more intense year of work than a holiday. “The original plan was to take the whole year off, but I ended up working 10-hour days, 7 days a week,” Eicca sums up with a smile. The result was ten or so songs for the musician’s new band, Cherry and the Vipers, as well as fifteen compositions for a special show honouring the music of Wagner. The Wagner spectacular was held in July 2013 and featured Apocalyptica performing along with, among others, the German MDR Symphony Orchestra and more than 100 dancers. Oh yeah, and on the side, Eicca also learned how to play the drums. “I have never been as productive in my whole life as I was during my so-called sabbatical year.” LeviDays | 36
In March 2014, Apocalyptica will join the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra for a new type of tour that will lead the group around Finland and to Germany, Russia and the Baltic countries. The tour will feature both the orchestra and the band playing Apocalyptica material that has rarely been performed live. At this stage, it is sure that the band will be performing again in Levi, which has become a familiar environment for them over the years due to gigs held at, among other places, Hullu Poro Areena. Eicca and the fell village have a shared history that stretches back to the early 1990s, when the composer participated in the Särestö Chamber Concerts. In addition to his role in Apocalyptica, this talented man also holds his own as a drummer for the band Cherry and the Vipers, in which his wife, Actress Kirsi Ylijoki, serves as soloist. Eicca anticipates that he will be performing with this band in Levi during the winter season 2013–2014.
Personal trainer There is no set formula used in the writing of Apocalyptica songs. Generally speaking, however, it goes like this: one of the band members composes a song, develops it for the demo stage and then presents it to the others. The whole band then plays the song together and considers how they might spice it up. But how does the artist feel when he gets writer’s block while writing a song? “In a way, you have your whole self-esteem on the line... at its worst,” laughs Eicca. Eicca states that, to a certain extent, an unavoidable fear of failure and knocks to one’s self esteem are part of the process of creating any larger work. It is also a healthy sign of self-criticism. “You should never get it in your head that everything you create will be something amazing,” Eicca says.
A musician must challenge himself all the time, since he doesn’t have a boss breathing down his neck or pressuring him to finish a task. The process of composing music is a lonely one, so the musician has to become his own personal trainer. “Composition is a bit like schizophrenia. Sometimes I think it’s the coolest job around. Other times, I think that it’s the most awful way I could think of to pass the time. It’s an insane job!” The methods used to overcome a block or get oneself into the right mood are certainly band-oriented. When recording one of Eicca’s favourite songs, “Beautiful”, for example, the four members of Apocalyptica decided to get naked to create a vulnerable atmosphere. This is only one example. Eicca tells that there isn’t a single one of the band’s albums that would have been recorded in its entirety in a fully-clothed state. Whenever a band member can’t get into the
right mood, the trousers are the first things to go. Recording sessions aren’t the only place where the clothes come off either. “We many times play the soundchecks naked too. In Strasbourg, for example, it’s become a tradition,” the musician laughs. From zero to full on Despite all the work and trials to one’s self image, Eicca still wouldn’t change a thing. A profession as a musician offers unforgettable experiences in, for instance, the form of exotic gigs, such as the pontoon boat show we did on the Bosporus Strait in Turkey with its overriding ‘seasickness’ theme. “The horizon was rocking nicely as the cargo ships cruised by in the background.” “Apocalyptica has done an enormous number of shows over the years. So, it’s always inspiring when something different or exceptional finds its way into the programme,” Eicca states.
One reason for the band’s sabbatical year was to take some distance and enable each member of the band to relax in a pressurefree environment where no one was expected to write a song or sit in a studio. Apocalyptica’s next album will emerge at some point in the future. It will come together without the pressure of a production timetable. “Our production schedule has been relatively tight, so this time the intention is to proceed without haste, to go with the flow. For once, we are making an album without any specific timetable.” Perhaps they will again create a suitably vulnerable atmosphere by getting naked in the recording studio or even on stage. Maybe they will find themselves in the natural fell surroundings of Levi or in the down-under atmosphere of Australia. It seems that with Apocalyptica, anything is possible. The nearly Finnish Pandora Everyone who visited a nightclub during the 90s has probably heard of the artist named Pandora. This Swedish singer is one of the gifts of our western neighbour to the world at large, and the Finnish people have adopted her as their own without reserve. Adopted perhaps even more strongly than the Swedes themselves, since Pandora has, throughout her entire career, been unbelievably popular in Finland. The wildest years of her career came during the mid-90s, when everything reached – as the artist herself puts it – a stage of near hysteria at times. She recalls one Finnish show in particular, as one of her best memories. “I will never forget the Rantarock show in 1995, where I performed on my 25th birthday. A total of 40,000 people sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to me and made me completely speechless!” remembers Pandora, whose real name is Anneli Magnusson. “I love having gigs in Finland, also because I have great Finnish friends who I always try to find time to see when I am in Finland,” she adds. Many generations of Pandora fans The fans have faithfully stood by their idol over the years, even though the nineties’ fans are already clearly over the traditional age of the disco crowd. Nowadays, the shows are also being attended by a new generation of Pandora fans. “The front row of my show now contains mothers and daughters standing side-by-side! I have also attracted new fans because, in addition to the nightclubs, I now perform at a lot of festivals, private events, concert halls, and even in churches,” Pandora explains. When asked about the secret of her success, she thinks for a moment and responds: “I think that a singer has to evolve with the time and the trends, since the same style won’t hold your audience forever. My own musical style has changed along with my development as a person and artist. I am, for example, a significant amount more involved in the song lyrics than I was at the beginning of my career. Motherhood also plays its part, and I am a lot more relaxed about things nowadays,” states the mother of an 8-year-old son. A regular visitor to Levi The fans clearly appreciate Pandora’s ability to change with the times, since her show schedule is still quite busy, and she is invited to perform in Levi time and again. “Levi is a wonderful place, not the least of which because of its awesome setting. During the days, one can try out different winter sports and then party in the evenings,” she says with a laugh. What would Pandora’s tip be for tourists planning a visit to Levi for the first time? “I would definitely recommend trying a run on a snowmobile; it’s amazingly fun!”

Some of the fun ways for a family to spend their day include swinging and climbing in Levi’s Adventure Park, playing at the Children’s Playhouse, adventures around the fell and making acquaintances with new, gentle animals. An action-packed weekly programme has been planned especially for children. If the weather is poor, options include bowling, swimming at the spa or playing indoor games. Levi also has separate programmes for those who are looking to indulge and pamper themselves, those who like simple hikes, and those who are more serious wilderness adventurers. Let the games begin… It is easy to have an outdoor excursion with children, since there are rest sites with campfire/grilling possibilities close to the centre of the fell village, such as at the bottom of lifts 5 and 6. Levi Husky Park, reindeer farms, the Snow Village and Levi Ice Gallery offer memorable experiences for the whole family. The Levi area is clearly laid out and well marked, and guests are well taken care of. It is very difficult to get lost, and the trails are of reasonable lengths and easy to travel. The traffic arrangements in the area are organised in such a way as to keep it a safe distance away from the trails and areas in which people are moving about on foot, bikes or other means of slower transportation. The keen attention to safety is also reflected in Levi’s low crime rate. Safety is a primary aspect of all activities in Levi. During the skiing season, for example, you can rest easy while your children enjoy the well-supervised children’s downhill ski slopes. And if necessary, the whole family can improve their downhill skills at the ski school!
The recipe for an exciting and fun-filled holiday includes new experiences, furry animals, new friends of all ages, and a pinch of courage to try new challenges. Levi is brimming with activities for children.

Natural wonders Adventures outdoors offer a multitude of marvels for children and adults. The joyous chattering of children surrounds the fell as they explore the natural wonders of Lapland. Guideposts, marked trails, tracks and different cycling routes form a network that crisscrosses all around Levi Fell. Adventures in the
forests begin with the selection of an appropriate route. The nature in Lapland offers something new year-round, something that is indescribable in words or pictures. The light in the fells is different, the colours change according to season and the animals accept the humans as a part of the natural world. The highlight of any outing may be, for example, the quick visit of a lemming along the trail, a glimpse of a fox racing after a rabbit, or the confused stare of a moose from behind a tall tree. The longest family trails lead to the always magnificent scenery of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Adventure Park will straighten your curls Adventure Park is located in the Levi Activity Park, in the forested area alongside the Levi Black racing piste. Here, you can experience a truly exhilarating mountain adventure in total safety! In Levi’s Adventure Park, you can move through the designated courses along elements attached to the tall reaches of the Lapland pines. The courses are comprised of wooden steps, bridges, nets and tunnels. The different courses have been set up at varying heights and are colour-coded according to their level of difficulty. Select the course that
best suits your skills and energy level. It is so much fun that you want to go again and again. Levi also provides you with new friends who are nice to pat. These new friends, of course, are waiting for you in the Reindeer Park, which is only open during the summer season. The reindeer and their calves roam freely within a 170-hectare area of the fell. You can hike in the park and admire the reindeer along with the fantastic mountain scenery. Park guides are also ready to ensure that you have a memorable visit to the Reindeer Park. Levi’s weekly summer programme also includes guided tours to Reindeer Park. When the kids are happy, so are the parents! The Children’s Playhouse Inka & Niko is a fun place for small children to play and let loose. The area contains a ball pit, a bouncy castle, toy cars and a whole lot more! The same floor of the hotel also has a bowling alley, game machines and a pool table. And since it’s a holiday, adults have permission to play as well. The bubbling spa waters call out to all those who love the water. The spa offers hot and cold pools, whirlpool baths, a waterslide and a pool for small children, water massage points, a Finnish deadwood sauna and Turkish steam sauna, exercise pool, and water jogging lanes, and relaxation areas. Let’s not forget the spe-
cial lights and sounds; a true experience for the senses. Bowling is one of the world’s most popular sports. That’s no wonder, since bowling is suitable for all ages, and even beginners can experience a feeling of success. You can test your bowling skills at the bowling alley located in the Spa Hotel Levitunturi or at Holiday Club Levi Bowling. Hop on a bike! A bicycle is the ideal mode of transportation when looking to explore the area of Levi a bit more broadly, even with the whole family. Quality bikes for all purposes can be easily rented if you haven’t brought your own along. In addition to a variety of road and mountain biking trails, Levi has Finland’s fastest downhill course. The landscape changes with the seasons. The light of the nightless nights of summer is inspiring, while the autumn colours draw you in with their magnificent glow – the slower you move, the more you’ll see! The best part of a holiday, however, is simply spending time with others. The area’s own rental facility lets you try out any activity you like by providing you with all the equipment you’ll need and tips on the specific sports available. Remember to keep up your energy level by visiting either the Restaurant Palovartija (at the top of the lift) or the Alpine Café (at the bottom of the lift). For more information about the Gondola area, visit: Levi.fi > Levi parks > Activity Park Adventure Park When the day is young, Levi’s Adventure Park is the place to start. wooden steps to bridges, along nets and through tunnels. The different courses have been set up at differing heights and colour-coded according to their level of difficulty. Safety is paramount, and that’s why all of Adventure Park’s instructors are professionals trained by the Finnish Climbing Association. Every adventurer is briefed on safety issues and the use of the safety equipment prior to heading out on the course. Gondola 2000 cabin lift A lift, which has the honour of being the first of its kind in Finland, enables you to reach new heights of sightseeing. From the Gondola 2000 cabin lift, you can see the surrounding lake areas as well as the neighbouring fells of Pallas, Aakenus, Olos and Ylläs. In clear weather, you might even see all the way to Sweden or Norway.
The altitude difference between the lower and upper lift stations is 302 metres. At the upper station, you can exit the lift and walk around in the summertime fell landscape. Remember to drop in to see the Restaurant Palovartija building, which served as the quarters of the fire guard during the 1960s and 70s. Walk the 600-metre Peak Trail around the top of the fell. The trail is also suitable for travellers in wheelchairs or those with children in strollers. Lift tickets can be purchased at the Alpine Café in the lower station. One-way tickets can also be purchased at the upper station. Family services Activity Park is the ideal recreational area for families with its multitude of free services: Skate Park, a children’s traffic park, carousel, playground and climbing equipment, elements for children above and below 3 years of age, a glass-walled Lapp hut with a gas grill for

Under a Sun that never sets Basking in the midnight Sun is the peak of natural experiences during the summertime. But what is this nightless night phenomenon really about?
Simply stated, the nightless nights in the regions north of the Arctic Circle are caused by the slightly tilted angle of the Earth’s axis of rotation. The result of this tilted axis is that the polar regions get very different amounts of sunlight during the various seasons as the Earth revolves around the Sun. This is also the reason why the Sun doesn’t always appear to be at the same height at noon. When you are near to the North and South Poles, the Sun remains low in the winter and high in the summer. “If we want to be accurate, at the Arctic Circle, it’s actually only during the summer solstice that the Sun is above the horizon for a continuous 24-hour period,” specifies Anne Liljeström of the Ursa Astronomical Association. “During the solstice, the northern hemisphere is turned as much as possible toward the Sun, and the Sun is so high that it doesn’t ‘have time’ to disappear below the horizon as the Earth turns.” The midnight sun on a day that never ends is not the only wonder that the area has in store. The growth season at the northern latitudes is short, but all the more intense. You can practically hear new growth bursting through the soil and the birds chirp their mating songs all night long. Master chefs all over the world attribute the unique flavour of Finnish herbs to the enormous amount of light at the start of our growth season. So you might even find a sprig of Finnish parsley or chives in a dish prepared by one of the top restaurants in New York or Paris! Even though the Sun isn’t exactly dazzling, the light that the nightless night provides is just as bright as it is during the day. It tempts you to continue the day’s activities on into the next day. Or it dares you to try something totally new. How about a round of night golf?
Nighttime in the fells Sunlight during the night may make it difficult for those who are unaccustomed to the midnight Sun to fall asleep. On the other hand, some people want to force themselves to stay awake in order to make the most of this amazing natural phenomenon. Luckily, there is medicine for both problems. One way to take advantage of this phenomenon is, for example, to take a nighttime hike. In Levi, guests have the opportunity to hike up into the fells. The low light picks up all the brilliant red and orange hues, thereby highlighting the rise and fall of the surrounding fells. The plants seem to glow against the majestic light, and a quiet hiker may have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of reindeer or other animals going about their nighttime routines.
The Sun won’t set in Levi between 27 May and 17 July 2014. You can even capture all the magic on camera without the need to use the flash. The weekly programmes scheduled for the summer season feature, on each Friday, a special hike to appreciate and experience the spirit of the nightless night. From the fell top, you can meander your way back down the fells along well-marked trails. There is no hurry, since you don’t need to be back ‘before dark’. Even if you get a bit lost on a side trail, it’s not a catastrophe in this light. Sometimes the trail will lead you through the unbroken silence of a breathtaking landscape. Other times, you may hear the buzz of
a foreign language as other groups walk by or race by on bikes along the trails of the Levi Bike Park. When you get close to the mountain lake, you will hear fishing lines whistling through the air as anglers test their nighttime luck in the cool lake waters. Next you may hear the crackling of firewood somewhere nearby. A group of travellers has gathered around the campfire at a resting site to share their experiences and enjoy a snack. From there, you can make your way to the aforementioned golf greens. Or perhaps you would like to get a few hours of sleep before breakfast. Midsummer night magic - literally The nightless night is an absolutely magical phenomenon. While enjoying the natural wonders, you can, however, enhance the magic in the style of days gone by. Midsummer night, which will fall between 20 and 21 June in 2014, is believed to be an especially ideal time to perform magic that, for example, may reveal the secrets of your future love life. If, for instance, you want your future spouse and / or great love to appear to you in your sleep, you simply need to pick seven different flowers on Midsummer Eve and place them under your pillow. An additional requirement for the magic to work is that once you have picked the flowers, you may not speak to anyone until the following morning. If that doesn’t sound good, you can also try for the same result by circling a well three times clockwise at midnight and then gazing into the well. In emergencies, a basin filled with water will also work. Whichever method you choose, an image of your beloved should appear on the surface of the water – but only if you are naked. mia keurulainen

Golf by day and night On Levi’s spectacular 18-hole golf course, every summer is full of wonderful moments and eye-opening experiences, both day and night.
According to Timo Sattanen, Managing Director of Levi Golf & Country Club, a total of approximately 10,000 rounds of golf are played on the course each year. The hole-in-one statistics are updated regularly, and the list can be viewed online at levigolf.fi. Levi’s golf course also offers a great driving range, which is being developed continuously, for example, in terms of the practice putting green. The new golf ball washer on the driving range might also catch the eye of the course’s famous golf ball-stealing fox. “Over the years, the fox has managed to carry too many souvenirs off the course,” Timo says with a laugh.

A beloved work and pastime Levi Golf’s Head Pro, Mika Vettainen, talks to LeviDays about his work. What is it like to work as the Head Pro at Levi? It’s extremely fun. I enjoy being around all the relaxed people, both the staff and the players. The atmosphere on the course is cosy and comfortable. What do you do during an average day? My normal weekday comprises teaching and coaching sessions with club members, beginners’ courses and private lessons, demonstrations of the sport, equipment sales and maintenance, tournament trips with the junior players, etc. In addition to all that, I also practice and play golf, read books and magazines related to golf and all sports, attend training sessions, network with other coaches, and share my own knowledge and news. Golf is genuinely a part of my life 24/7! Besides coaching and teaching, my services include working at the Pro shop, overseeing equipment sales and maintenance, club fittings, judging and competition management, the arrangement of trips abroad for tournaments or practice, etc.

A teacher in marathon training Despite the fact that she has always been a jogger, Pia Liettu hasn’t been that interested in running competitions. In 2012, Pia decided, however, to participate in the Ruska Marathon event. As a matter of fact, Pia first participated in the Ruska Marathon event during high school, when she ran a half marathon. “That was 20 years ago though, so we don’t count that,” Pia says with a laugh. In 2012, Pia’s colleague encouraged her to come along to a marathon training programme. The majority of her ‘schoolmates’ had their eye set on the next autumn’s Ruska Marathon race, and Pia soon got interested in the idea of running a half marathon. “I didn’t really put too much pressure on myself; I just ran in accordance with the advice I got from the marathon training sessions and with what felt good to me. It wasn’t until the beginning of the summer that I made the decision to participate in the autumn’s Ruska Marathon event.” Fresh tips on marathon training Pia is grateful for the new things she learned from the marathon training programme. In this case, knowledge did not increase the pain. Pia would recommend the marathon training programme to other runners as well.
“The programme taught me to listen to my own body and I got a lot of great advice on how to develop my running condition. In addition to learning how to train properly, I also got peer support and encouragement from the programme,” Pia adds. The Ruska marathon race came off without a hitch Once Pia had decided to participate in the Ruska Marathon race, she continued to jog as she had earlier, but her distances were occasionally greater. “When it came time for the event, I was prepared both physically and mentally. The weather was suitably cool, and so I didn’t overheat while running. There were people cheering us on all along the route and that helped to keep me motivated.” Is Pia planning to take another 20-year break before attempting her next half marathon? “To be honest, I do feel the drive coming on, so it may be that I am again standing at the starting line of the Ruska Marathon next autumn.” Pia’s tips for those planning to run a half marathon: 1. Join a running school or training group. 2. Start your training early enough before the event. 3. Get your body accustomed to longer distances, but listen to your body while you are training. 4. Get your system used to sports drinks in plenty of time before the race, if you plan to drink them during the actual race. laura hyle • levi

To someone unaccustomed to the sport, cross-country skiing may seem like an odd recreation.
ing the backwoods surrounding the fell centre – you should see it, for example, during the LeviLoppet event! Even if you are highly inexperienced on skis, you should courageously go to the nearest ski rental site. Next, you can sign up for a course at the Levi Ski School to learn the best crosscountry tips and methods.
It is actually quite impossible to explain the pleasure one gets from cross-country skiing. When you first try out the sport in a wintry snow-covered forest or on the glimmering snowdrifts of spring, you may find yourself wondering why on earth you hadn’t given skiing a try earlier. For many who take to the skis in Lapland, the pure nature and unparalleled peace can easily earn a place in their hearts. The biggest fans return regularly to ski the fells of Lapland as an eagerly awaited annual holiday to recharge their batteries. When they get back home and with a yearning in their eyes, they tell stories about the mystical reaches of Lapland to all who’ll listen. And, in particular, about an area and village, which is located at the foot of the fells surrounded by snow, forests and ice-covered lakes. Its residents are an amazing people who
Dress properly For your first time out, make sure not to overdress, since cross country skiing can easily make you sweat. And you won’t get the chills when you stop for a breather, if you remember to pack a jacket for the breaks. Naturally, when the temperatures are really low, more clothes may be necessary. Remember, however, to dress in layers, and ensure that the first layer is a material that both breathes and allows moisture to escape. You will also need a route map, energy bars and a warm drink in a thermos. You can also plan your ski route so that your journey takes you past a cross-country café. A doughnut and a cup of warm juice or hot chocolate may add just the right touch to a round on the ski tracks. It will also give you the opportunity to share your experiences with other tourists.
traverse the snowy landscape wearing long plastic boards on their feet. Onward to the snow! As a sport, cross-country skiing might be described as follows: In mildly freezing temperatures, a well-maintained track crunches under your gliding skis. The ski poles sink into pure, white snow in near perfect harmony with the rhythm of the kicking motions maintained by your leg and hip muscles. The going is easy as your lungs fill with the air that is the purest in all of Europe. This is how the sport feels in Levi, where there is a network of ski tracks that totals 230 kilometres. The network is also unbelievably well maintained. Furthermore, the nearest routes of the varied network are illuminated. Everyone, from beginners to avid skiers and top athletes enhancing their skills, enjoys ski-

Skiing is a very relaxing activity on your own, but pleasant company never did anyone any harm. If you plan a longer excursion, in particular, it would be a wise idea to take a friend along. It is also polite to inform someone, perhaps at the reception desk where you are staying, where you are planning to go and how long you intend to be gone. Inner routes Officially, the cross-country skiing season gets underway in October or November, when the near 9-kilometre free ‘First snow track’ welcomes skiers. You can opt to ski either in the classic or free style. The First snow track is illuminated and has an altitude variation of 37 metres. The track starts at the base of the Front Pistes beside the Areena Restaurant in the centre and heads toward Lake Taalojärvi. It returns along the same route. The First snow track is primarily intended for active skiers. If you are practicing with children, we recommend starting with the illuminated Miniporo route, which is 2.3 kilometres in length. Parents and children who already master the sport can venture on to the 4.2 kilometre Pikkuporo route (illuminated). In Levi, the skiing season continues late into the spring. Check all tracks at Levi.fi Plan your route online! Visit at Levi.fi > Pistes and tracks > Cross-country skiing. The site also provides up-to-date information on the condition of the tracks. Before you head out, make sure to also check out the cross-country cafés and their opening hours from the submenu in the Cross-country skiing section. teemu kytövuori • per lundström
A massage is a healthy and recommended indulgence, particularly after a long day of activities. On an active Levi holiday, you should take special care to make sure that your body recovers after it works hard. That’s where the idea of feeling good really counts for something. Massage is a traditional, helpful and healthy means of maintaining your mobility. It is worth remembering, that different types of massages contribute to the prevention of muscle tension and various injuries. If you’re smart, you’ll take care of your body even before you head out to begin your activities. Finnish massage focuses on loosening up stiff muscles and encouraging circulation in areas that are really tense. Remember not to plan anything too wild for the day of your massage, since your body will be vulnerable and sensitive after your treatment. Also remember to drink plenty of fluids, because the massage will stimulate your metabolism. Elastic motion, flexible muscles You can safely jump into different activities when you know that your body is in condition. A body that has no aches or stiff muscles is far more elastic and likely to endure a
greater amount of exertion. It is just as important to remember to take the time to recover and stretch after exercising. You can reach a near euphoric state of harmony in Levi by taking advantage of the comprehensive wellness and beauty treatment services available. And the best part? All of the quality care and professional wellness services can be enjoyed on your own, with a friend or as a couple, or in a larger group. If you are looking to pamper yourself, book an appointment with a hairdresser or at the beauty salon. Or share your indulgence with a good friend at the cosmetologist’s while getting a manicure or pedicure. Some would rather get rejuvenated with a massage, bath or visit to the spa. A liberating laugh shared by friends, in the sauna perhaps, opens the mind and relaxes the soul. We invite all the magazine readers to take the time to truly relax! Go to Levi Info > Service Search, and in the search criteria, select Category > Health and Wellness and Service > Massage and Physical Treatments. The Levi area also has a wide range of sauna options available! teemu kytövuori

We’ve decided to include a few suggestions for an easy and pleasant day or half a day in Levi. Indoor activities If you are travelling with your entire family, why not start with a little shopping in the Levin Tori area followed by a shared dining experience in one of the local restaurants. Next, you can let your food digest while, for example, playing a relaxing round of bowling. The youngest members of the family will really enjoy the Children’s Playhouse Inka & Niko, which is located at the Spa Hotel Levitunturi. From here, the natural next step is a dip in the waters of the Spa. An enjoyable day indoors ends with a film at the Levi Summit. Focusing on wellness A wellness day is the day of choice for all those looking to pamper themselves. Levi has numerous massage, treatment, wellness and beauty care services. You can spend the whole day luxuriating, but even half a day is enough to relax or make yourself even more beautiful or handsome. This option can be enjoyed at any time of the year. A day full of action! The weekly programme for families and the children’s own weekly programme contain plenty of thrills and exciting activities to keep everyone entertained. Both the winter and summer seasons have their own specially-designed weekly programmes. Select the day and programme that suits you best, but remember to sign your group up no later than the day prior to your day of choice. One might think that there couldn’t be any two more different cultures, particularly in terms of the weather conditions, than Finland and Thailand.
Many travellers from the land of tropical heat and smiles have, however, found their way to the quiet darkness of Finland, and all the way to Levi. One of them is Orawan Uljas, who is known as Ning. Currently, Ning works in the kitchen of the Spa Hotel Levitunturi. During her twelve years in Finland, she has gained a great deal of work experience, also from, for example, the legendary Crazy Reindeer restaurant. When asked about the differences between the Finnish and Thai people, Ning immediately begins to laugh. “It’s true that Finns seem very serious in comparison to our culture,” she says with a smile. “But I don’t mean that in a negative sense. Quite the opposite, in fact. I generally only have positive things to say about Finns and I have made many new friends.” Walking in the winter wonderland Ning arrived in Finland in 2001 and proceeded straight to Levi on the recommendation of relatives who were already living in the area. She is not put off by the dark and frosty winter weather. “It’s no problem,” states Ning. “I was never especially fond of the often suffocating heat in my homeland.” And that’s exactly what we Finns flock to Thailand for during our winter holidays!
In the pleasant climate of the North, Ning has noticed that she enjoys spending time in outdoor recreations. She hikes a lot and swims. The swimming only happens during the summer though, since the idea of ice swimming still seems to be quite an exotic concept. “I also walk to work and back, and during the dark winter mornings, in particular, the experience of walking under the clean, starry sky is very romantic,” Ning says. She still hasn’t dared to attempt the ski trails, however, and to this point, she has only admired the slalom slopes from a suitable distance. Salt & Pepper – and then some One issue that comes quickly to mind when discussing the differences between Finland and Thailand is food. Ning has performed many different kitchen tasks, from dishwashing to cooking, so it is likely she has something to say on this topic. “Ha ha,” laughs Ning. “Why is it, I wonder, that Finns always flavour their food, any food, with just salt and pepper...” Ning doesn’t look down on Finnish food. As she is used to strong flavours, however, she still prefers to cook Thai delicacies for her own meals. When she’s cooking, scents of lime, coriander and lemon grass waft from her kitchen. She also brings these spices with her when she comes back from visiting her homeland during the summertime, when the weather there is considered to be cool by Thai standards. mia keurulainen • kimmo salminen

Mr. Ski Week The highlight of the year for ski instructors and those who are involved in all aspects of alpine skiing was held during the spring ski season. The international ski seminar attracted some big names. Mr. Ski Week was held in Levi on 25–28 April 2013. This four-day event was intended for a wide group of professionals working around alpine skiing, including ski instructors, ski resort management, equipment manufacturers, media and communications professionals and all those actively involved in all aspects of the ski resort business. Participants spent Thursday to Sunday listening to a variety of lectures and enjoying the evening programmes. And there was still time to check out the pistes, as the name of the event also reflects. “Excellent arrangements, successful venue and loads of really interesting people. It was great to exchange and hear opinions and ideas from different perspectives,” Rudi Lapper, Head of the National Ski Instructor Examination in Austria, sums up by phone. He was one of the highly skilled experts present for the event. Rudi presented the Austrian way to slalom. He shed light on, among other topics, Austrian coaching and various training methods. This experienced pro arrived with great expectations, since this was his first visit to Levi. The wintry resort managed even to stun
someone from one of the great countries for alpine skiing. “Levi has downhill skiing, cross-country skiing… everything. This is probably the best site I’ve seen in all of Northern Europe.” Mr. Ski, also known as Ulf Edborg, was the major draw of the International Ski Seminar. He was also celebrating his 60 years as a ski instructor. For those familiar with the sport, perhaps the following names will also tell some-

Golden Flight Level Hundreds of air-traffic controllers gathered in Levi for seven days in March 2013. Levi had the honour of, again, hosting the week-long event, which was organised for the 38th time. In principle, the event is actually the air-traffic controllers’ own world championship in cross-country skiing, snowboarding and giant slalom. “Since the event has grown to 600800 participants, it is always a challenge to find a location where all the arrangements work. Fortunately, Levi has plenty of options,” explains Thomas Karlström, President of the Organisation Committee. According to Thomas, everything from the overall event to its individual arrangements, succeeded greatly. The co-operation with, for example, Levi Events went off without a hitch. The enthusiastic initiative of all the co-operative partners in Levi also made an impression. “Many of the participants came to us afterward and stated that you set the bar quite high.” Thomas, who has been involved in 19 Golden Flight Level events, clarifies, however, that the idea was never to generate competition as to who can organise the best event from one year to the next. That would place too much pressure on the event organisation. “Each country organises the event as they want it,” he emphasises.

thing about the calibre of the event: Ingemar Stenmark, Pernilla Wiberg, Ylva Novén, Staffan Lundström, Gunnar Moberg, Klas Åstrand, Steve Holland, Ronald CrawfordCurrie, Christer Lidgren and Rick Rauch, Hans Gerremo and Hans Starkman. At the time this article was written, the dates for the next Mr. Ski Week still hadn’t been decided. Rudi Lapper believes, however, that it will be in the near future. He won’t venture a guess as to the venue, however. “I do hope to get back to Levi at some point though.”

In addition to the competitions, the Golden Flight Level event was visible as four hot tubs, two saunas and a 300 m2 tent in the Front Piste area. The 2014 GFL will be held in Slovenia. CASE
Case Levi Suksee The conference and congress centre, Levi Summit, hosted an impressive group of people from all over Finland at the turn of January-February 2013. This was the first time when Levi hosted this important seminar for top names in the areas of business and finance. The audience was treated to straight talk about, for example, success and risk-taking, great growth stories and lessons learned from unsuccessful pursuits. On the basis of the discussions held during the breaks and the feedback received, the event was a success and met with the expectations of seminar participants. In fact, more than four out of five would recommend the seminar to their colleagues! “In the future, we could focus more on promoting Levi’s services and coming up with a supplementary programme, since this is such a unique world and it would provide a real chance for seminar participants to let loose and escape the hustle bustle,” says Antti Rotko, Area Manager and one of the event organizers. Comments from participants: “Well organised seminar, excellent speakers. The venue was attractive and functioned well – I could easily think about organising, for example, my sales meetings in Levi.” “Of the day’s speeches, the ones that will stick in my mind the best include the introduction, and specifically Gretzky’s aphorism: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” I definitely plan on using that saying myself in the future.” “The seminar programme has been really good! The venue and seminar concept worked well, and the group stuck tightly together.” teemu kytövuori • per lundström

FEM
-miners descend on Levi The Fennoscandian Exploration and Mining Conference – FEM 2013, which is counted among Europe’s largest ore mining and mineral industry conferences, will be held once again in Levi during 29.–31. October 2013. The riches lying deep within the Finnish Lapland have attracted the mining industry in great numbers to the North. For this reason, Levi is an ideal and logical venue for the FEM conference, which is being organised this year for the ninth time. The conference gathers experts in the field at Levi Summit Conference Centre to interact and network. The conference is held every second year and has gradually grown into one of the top events in the industry. The event aims, among other things, to share information about mining operations and mineral reserves in the Fennoscandian region.
Levi was a brilliant choice, because of all the services it offers The previous conference in 2011 attracted nearly 1,000 professionals and more than 100 exhibitors from 22 different countries. A diverse organisation The organisation that runs the conference includes representatives from Finland, Sweden and Norway, and the conference is hosted by the Regional Council of Lapland. In addition to the regional councils, provinces, educational institutions, research institutes, the Canadian Embassy and the Finnish Ministry of Employ-
ment and the Economy, the mining companies in Lapland are all busy contributing to the organisation of the conference. One member of the Organizing Committee is Kimmo Hannukainen, the HR Manager for the main sponsor, Agnico Eagle. On the committee, Hannukainen represents the Finnish Association of Extractive Resources Industry (FinnMin). “This year’s conference guests will also have the opportunity to visit Agnico Eagle’s mining operations in Kittilä, Kevitsa Mining’s mine in Sodankylä, as well as Northland’s Hannukainen and Kaunisvaara mines,” states Hannukainen. Earlier, the conference was held in Rovaniemi, but the renovation of the Lappia House and the need for space forced us to look for other options. The venue was moved to Levi, since it is able to offer all the conference, accommodation and restaurant services re-
quired for a successful conference. Levi’s peak season kicks off handsomely with the FEM conference. “Levi was a brilliant choice, because of all the services it offers. And it’s located very close to all the mines,” adds Hannukainen. A common goal This year’s conference is again expected to attract close to 1,000 participants. “FEM is an event that has earned a distinguished reputation and become a popular forum for focusing on the hot topics of the day.” This year’s themes include sustainable development, environmental issues, water management and use, social licences, and new projects and strategies in the mining industry. “Each mining company has its own revolutionary ideas. The main speakers are international experts in their fields. The perspective has expanded to cover all the different stages of the entire mining lifecycle,” Hannukainen sums up. The atmosphere at the conference is friendly and open. “It offers a great opportunity to hear what aspects are being done more successfully in, for example, Australia. There is actually no competitive pressure between the actors in the field, but rather, information and working methods are shared openly and with the idea of helping everyone to be equally successful. “The topics are handled realistically, and the speeches don’t waste any time with trivial idealism,” Hannukainen states while also warmly welcoming all interested parties to participate in the event in Levi.
