Ellen Feldman, Terrible Virtue and Jennifer Brown, Modern Girls
February 7 In Terrible Virtue, Ellen Feldman tells the story of the mother Photographer: Laura Mozes of birth control, the founder of Planned Parenthood, and an American champion of women around the world, Margaret Sanger, as she herself might have told it. This is the provocative and compelling story of one of the most fascinating and influential figures of the twentieth century. In her debut novel, Modern Girls, Jennifer Brown deftly sketches the historical context of two Lower East Side women’s domestic tribulations, alternating between their stories, reflecting upon the social Photographer: Jim Pogozelski consequences faced by women in different generations. In 1935, as women in America strive for the rights to work, to vote, and to lead independent lives, a Jewish mother and daughter face unwanted pregnancies.
Eileen Pollack, A Perfect Life
March 7 Jane Weiss, a research scientist at MIT, investigates the genetic makeup of a neurodegenerative disease, a quest made more Photographer: Michele McDonald urgent because her mother died of the disease and Jane herself has a 50 percent chance of having it. Pollack expertly and sensitively focuses on the nuances of ambivalence and on the human dilemma of what to do in the complex ethical situations that arise from genetic research.
Irina Reyn, The Imperial Wife
March 28 The discovery of a historic Russian artifact kicks off a dual narrative of two women separated by centuries but united Photographer: Aslan Habib Chalom in grit and ambition. The stories of two eras and two marriages are related in evocative language steeped in keenly observed details.

The Art of Block and Linocut Printing With Bill Farran, artist and historian February 6
Linocut artist Bill Farran shares the story of the art of linocut and block printing--working in reverse-- creating “what I leave behind” prints. When Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso started using linoleum in the early 1900s, its popularity grew. Farran’s talent with the medium, carving in reverse and then hand printing each piece, and his passion for his subject, the wooden synagogues of Eastern Europe and their importance in Jewish cultural history, combines his love of history, geography, Jewish genealogy and art in a compelling presentation of this intriguing art form.
