Treasure Island Intermodal Hub

- Ferry Shelter - Public Restrooms - Bus Shelters

Ferry Pier

This project, located on Treasure Island in San Francisco, creates an intermodal transit hub at the islands single point of entry by land. It included programming, design, entitlements, and documentation for a new 7,000 sf ferry shelter and terminal area. The shelter will serve the 18,640 future residents of Treasure Island, as well as visitors utilizing the ferry, MUNI, and AC Transit bus services on the island. DE+ designed new bus and shuttle shelters which, together with the ferry shelter, create an inter-modal hub at the gateway to Treasure Island.

Historic Building 1, located across the street, together with the Ferry Shelter, create grand plazas on either side of Palm Drive. Palm Drive comprises an important segment of the Intermodal Transit Loop, with Island Shuttle and bus stops in front of the Ferry Building. A wide midblock crossing provides a direct, axial pedestrian connection from the Ferry Building to Building 1.

With a sightline out to San Francisco, the facade of the restroom was entitled to minimize its impact, and more to reflect the landscape of Palm Drive.

Intermodal Structures

- Modular Classrooms

- Rapidly deployable housing

Dilworth Eliot has been working with Intemodal Structures to develop their modular classroom system since 2015. While the modular unit is roughly the same dimension of a shipping container, the container itself entirely custom fabricated for the client. The frame is based on a steel moment frame, infilled with insulated metal window panels, windows, and doors. They have been awarded the US Resiliency Council’s Platinum Earthquake Rating, making them the first educational facilities in the country to achieve USRC’s highest resiliency status.

Utilizing the DIRTT interior wall system, the system enables school districts to customize their classroom interiors based on needs and budget, and also enables the classroom to accommo-

date future changes in technological innovations. The interiors are manufactured and shippied in 21 days or less, and can be fitted during school closures or classroom breaks.

Dilworth Eliot has adapted the system for rapidly deployable housing for individuals displaced due to California fires, as well as commercial office spaces.

Our role is varied: design assist through design build, design development, code research, construction documents for site adapts of the system, renderings of new projects, and construction administration.

Utility Building

Wedge Park is located in Candlestick Point, San Francisco, and is a central feature to the development surrounding the plaza and park area. The park buildings designed by Dilworth Eliot Studio were the cafe, pump station, and restrom facilities.

Sorrounded by the developments infrastructure, the Bus Rapid Transit System and central cycle route, the part provides respite in the urban core of the new development. The park’s unique shape give the plaza qualities of a plaza and promenade. The role of the architecture of the utility building was to blend with the more formal architecture of the restrooms and the cafe. The utility building and restroom were related with their mesh skin

providing some transparency to the function of the building. The mesh skin allowed the substructure to drive the form and allow the material to react. The roof of the cafe was to float with the promenade and allow as much open space as could be provided for the cafe function. The paving was carefully selected to find a product that could be used both indoor and outdoor so the plaza continued through the space. With the gathering spaces of the plaza organized at the wider end of wedge park, the architecuture was organized along the side to provide extensive views across the South Basin to Hunters Point.

The design of the restroom building had just begun schematic design at the time of this print.

SHANGHAI NINE TREES ART CENTER

- Competition with STUDIOS Architecture

Tucked into a forested area outside of Shanghai, the Nine Trees Art Center competition was for a new cultural desitination for the district of Fengxian, offering mainstream and experimental theater, musical performances, art exhibitions, fashion shows, and other events.

The Shanghai Forest Theater is envisioned as the hub of the Nanqiao New Town. Nanqiao is being planned as the political, economic and cultural center of the Shanghai Fengxian District, an important southern gateway to the Shanghai Yangtze River Delta and Pudong.

DE+ was invited to enter the competition for the new Shanghai Forest Theater complex with partner firms STUDIOS Architecture and Team 7 International. The program for the site includes a 1200-seat main theater, a 500-seat multi-purpose theater and a 300-seat theme theater, as well as administrative, logistical and other ancillary buildings. In addition, the complex will contain numerous art facilities, including an art exchange center for youth support services, art studios and a Shanghai opera culture research center.

Studios Architecture received award to design the interiors of the project, but did not receive award of the architecture.

SAN FRANCISCO STATE - University Club

- Interiors Remodel

The University Club project is a renovation of office space in the existing Cesar Chavez building at San Francisco State University into a private space for the University Club primarily for staff use and staff sponsored events. The project involved a change of use from office to assembly space, dictating an involved code research component showing the assembly space could be supported in the existing office space, with major changes to the fire suppression system. An Alternate Means and Methods Request was made, and granted, to use sprinklers at the existing windows, in lieu of a 1-hour rated assembly, as the code required.

The space converted to the University Club was a mezzanine level overlooking the University bookstore. An assembly hall lived above the space, and offices bordered it’s other wall. The building was a concrete structure, and thus there was no room to grow, making for a series of physical constraints in which to work around. The low ceiling height, dictated by triangulated concrete beams, drove the mechanical design, but also allowed for the design to provide more intimate and pubilc zones within the ceiling design.

Pier Workplace Renovation

- Programming and Interiors Remodel

This project was the renovation of a nationally listed historic pier in San Francisco was for the headquarters of our client. Dilworth Eliot lead the programming studies before the design effort.

The goal of the renovation was to break down organizational silos and significantly increase employee collaboration in a facility that is rendered more transparent and accessible. Organizationally, the leaders believed the staff didn’t have enough chance encounters in which to discuss ideas. A central kitchen was designed to act as one of the zones where this might occur. The new

double height lounge area adjacent to the kitchen served to open the space up to more daylight.

In coordination with the client’s long-term leasing strategy, MEP systems were re-designed to significantly improve occupant comfort while reducing operational expenses.

The structural impact was kept to inside the pier, as working outside (underneath) the pier would have created significant coastel permits and fees.
