H-INTRODUCTION Comparing the previous version of our “H-Diagram, House volume 5”, the charismatic experiments have still been existing in the “DNA” of the A49HD (Architects 49 House Design), yet they are approached from different directions. In this issue, it is comparatively more simple, smart and sophisticated simultaneously. Coincidentally, these 5 houses are related with the design of the “modern and artistic slab roofs”. Furthermore, each house itself is created with more graphical representations that could be obviously analyzed as a “New H-Definition of our House design” in 4Ps: Definition of the new “Paradigm” Although, the key concept of some houses is still contemporary by the analogical or metaphorical inspiration, yet it is more innovative as well as

focal point of the residence. In the meantime, the continuous lines both vertical and horizontal for the split levels of the “Waterfall House” are delicately organic and dynamic in terms of visual impact. Eventually, the “Semi House” obviously explores the graphical experimental design and the graphical dialogue of positive and negative spaces that are precisely smart and simple including the new perspective of the house design as well. Definition of the new “Programmatic”

in-depth in terms of diagrammatic interpretations and graphical representation, similar to the “Sugar House” that derived the main concept from the analogy between business of the owner and the crystallization of the house while the “Twisted House” is focused on the “Nostalgic metaphor” of the site’s existing conditions or even the clockwise-centralized movement that creates the unique spatial configuration of the spiral staircase and the cylinder stair hall, like a rotunda form, and its twisted diagram as an iconic impact of the house.

All basic shapes and forms of the houses: the semi-enclosed diagram like L-shape of “Sugar House”, an asymmetrical T-shape geometry for the “Twisted House”, U-shape or mirrored L Shapes of the “Semi House” or even totally enclosed as an O shape like either the “Waterfall House” or “Triangle House” are differently identified through the specific programmatic diagrams. These diagrams could encourage the unique character of the houses. For instance, the dramatic composition of solid and void that obviously reflects the privacy of multi-family’s subdivision that is the direction of the “Sugar House” while the “Waterfall House” is symbolized by a split or half level folding diagram therefore the step changing like entrance stairs and waterfall feature might be the key elements

The graphical composition and representation are revealed obviously either by the relationship or influenced by the urban context that is reflected in the mass organizing as well as the master plan of the “Triangle House” where the triangular negative space is intentionally emerged to be the

collaborate and create the unique programmatic diagrams as well. Definition of the new “Phenomenal” Although the meaning of “phenomenon” is really subjective and usually deals with the feelings, it might make a space and atmosphere more organic and dramatic in terms of the artistic quality or even adding the fourth dimension of each space that could be the critical impact of the house.

that obviously reflects from these programmatic diagrams itself. Absolutely, all basic forms together with smart programmatic diagrams mentioned earlier might be “a must” to be related to the functional diagram effectively.

Natural light is the key or equipment that could awake all spaces. Similarly, the “Sugar House” gives us emotional and sentimental senses as a “Poetic space” in the area of the main stair hall. It has extreme impact especially when the natural light casts on the wall. Simultaneously, the shade and shadows could play with the space in the ambiance o f t h e h o m o g e n e o u s a n d m o n o - c h ro m a t i c materials.

Coincidentally, almost all of the houses are organized with the special functions called “covered living terraces” to be the crucial spaces of the tropical dwelling, these multipurpose areas are focused in order to serve the various functions as a welcoming entrance foyer, buffering terrace, transitional space or the outdoor living room at the same time and same space similar to the “terrace of the traditional Thai house”. The “Twisted House” for example, this negative space could also effectively be separated from the public and private functions as a double volume buffering zone. Additionally, the specific spaces are occupied by utilizing the special functions which are interchangeable following the modernization’s lifestyle and living patterns such as supercar workshops, garage-life living, under water-like home theater and tea house glass pavilion could

This geometric dwelling is situated amidst big rain trees either inside or outside the boundary, in a suburban area of Bangkok. Although, the location is near the urban fabric such as transport connections, it is still a friendly and peaceful n e i g h b o r h o o d a s we l l a s a g o o d n a t u ra l environment. There are three different functions consisting of a main house, a glass pavilion and an exercise complex which are delicately organized in this charismatic setting. Sometimes, an inspired concept would not be necessarily derived from the physical perception, similar to this residence, it is generated by an emotional experience of “the moment and interpretation of movement” which the architect gained during the initial site investigation. Therefore, the title “Twisted” is firstly based on a walk through pattern of winding and swing movements of the big rain trees. This site observation could also remind us of a “Mission” to preserve this unique existing condition without much disturbing it. As mentioned earlier, the most difficult task is to preserve all of them. Although we had done our best with various alternatives, it was hard to get a suitable layout that met our vastly complicated requirements. They would make the building much larger. Hence, we finally had to cut them. At the same position towards the back of the plot of land, the one that was eliminated is a nostalgic metaphor of the main circulation of the house which is similar to the core of a big tree.

Twisted Massing Organization

Twisted Diagram

Furthermore, centralized twisted massing composition would create an unexpected ex p e r i e n c e s i m u l t a n e o u s l y a t t h i s p o i n t . The round shape perfectly performed as a main circulation core, sculpture-like spiral staircase. The natural sunlight passing through the indirect skylight could play with this spatial configuration that makes it more organic and dynamic. The geometry on the second floor, public space such as family living, dining and pantry spaces, is perpendicularly “twisted” and turned around the same as a “clockwise movement” in order to keep away from the other existing big trees in front of the house. At the same center point, the massing arrangement above could be expressing the techniques of overlapping composition and unparalleled stacking effect. Therefore, the rest of the big tree grouping could survive without being bothered by the construction as well.

Initially, the house owners looked for some spaces influenced by the super hero movies scene by scene as the dream destination, especially when gathering and hanging out with their friends. On the other hand, they need the architect to propose something more innovative and attractive. Public space is organized on the second floor as a main function. The service area is hidden on the ground level while the private space is on the third and fourth floors. The spatial arrangement of the “Feminine and Masculine” would be obviously occupied by both horizontal and vertical compartments. “Twisted” functional diagram, horizontally, this space could effectively be separated by the negative double-space of the breathable breathtaking covered living terrace near the swimming pool area located besides the other group of the big rain trees. Moreover, the proportion of solid and void is addressed diagrammatically. The expression of the public space and entertaining activities are more transparent, contrasting to the private area which is more opaque to provide the sense of privacy. 29

Twisted Experience The concept of “Juxtaposition” is applied in various visual perceptions throughout the house. It could obviously create the feeling of curiosity. Initially, at the entrance of the house, the sense of welcoming is gradually revealed by the dramatic approach that begins at the house’s main gate passing through the parallel curved green walls and the slanted curved inner road. Ending the focal point of sleek sculpture in the middle of the drop-off area, the journey is “twisted” perpendicularly to the main entrance’s stairway, main door and welcoming corridor where the end point is attracted by the dynamic red sculpture sequentially.

Twisted Lifestyle The controversial activities and personal life style of the family members called “Diurnal and Nocturnal living patterns” are occupied in the differently sequential spaces. In the daytime, all the spaces wo u l d b e s u p p o r t i n g t h e fa m i l y- o r i e n te d

atmosphere and activities occupied by all the family living quarters while it could be “twisted” at the nighttime. The major space would be shifted to the duplex transparent house, approaching the spectacular swimming pool that could passionately be enthusiastic and sociable for the partygoers as a party destination or man-cave’s heaven. The “Underwater” likewise in the entertainment cocoon, connecting the ground level, such as the games room, high end home theater and DJ booth would be lively, whereas the twilight is coming shortly. The meticulous details might be crucial to be the key success of this house. Even though, it doesn’t show the variety of the materialistic quality, the impact could be obviously created by the relationship between a programmatic diagram and the sophisticated material applications. Furthermore, the modern composition of the massing organization of the exposed concrete, limestone cladding and natural mountain rocks could impressively be reflected as if it is a materialistic conversation.

Waterfall House is designed for a single family who is looking for a house that is suitable for Thai modern living conditions. One of them is a modern house with a lot of glazing for transparency and natural light but comfortable to live in without too much heat from sunlight in Bangkok. A requirement of a compact house that feels spacious and connected is also a main design criteria. The name “Waterfall House” comes from the feature of waterfalls at the center of the house. This waterfall feature is a result of a split-level design which aims to connect both visual and accessibility aspects between living spaces. The sloped surfaces of the waterfalls have two functions, dividing and connecting. For the dividing function, the sloped slab makes the half-level separation of parking space and lower level living space possible with no wasted space.

For the connecting function, the slope becomes pleasant waterfalls that link the lower and upper living spaces. The half-level difference between two living spaces provides separation of activities without distance or a closed wall. The central opening with the waterfalls allows visual connection to the upper floor and the air-flow which is necessary for a tropical house. The waterfalls bring a cooling and tranquil atmosphere to the surrounding space. The front open-terrace with a wide span structure creates a unique entrance experience. This covered space provides good shading for the inner living room during late mornings and afternoons. The character of the house simply reflects the concept of connecting the living space and directly expresses the different volumes of each space through the continuous folding white surface.

The title “Semi House” of this residence reflects the cohabitation of two close friends’ families who are willing to live together like an attached home in the same plot of the land without a clear boundary. Although this house is in a suburban area near the expressway and ring roads of Bangkok, it is still situated in a friendly neighborhood as well as a good natural environment surrounded by the existing big trees. The mirror double L-shaped house for each or a U shape as an attached home is the configuration of the massing and layout’s compositions. Therefore, the negative space of the green area could be divided into back yard and front yard automatically where they could be applied enjoyably together while the main entrance of each compartment would be definitely separated in order to individually control their own privacy whenever utilizing the inner spaces.

Conceptually, “Point to Point Contact” or “Angle Touch”, displayed in the front facade of each opposite corner of the building, is the key visual image that obviously expresses the graphical impact of the house. This effect could be created by shifting the positive and negative spaces both in different directions and different levels. These focal points are challenged by the feeling of “Anti-gravity” as if it is a supernatural lightness where the vertical connecting by the double volume space either outdoor or indoor spaces are created. From the external appearance, this house is essentially composed of two halves that looks like a symmetrical balance in terms of the parallel structure yet they are different functional diagrams inside.

An ivory, clean and clear atmosphere is served for a couple with children with the soft texture treatment in “Semi House A” while an ebonyindustrial loft” like a “man-cave” is organized for a single person with a dark and rough surface in “Semi House B”. The specific requirements show the unique characteristics of the house owner’s lifestyle such as an art gallery, the full wall comic display area, a men boutique dressing room with a menswear window display-like or even the exposed free standing black bathtub in the master bedroom are revealed obviously for “Semi House B”.

An orientation of the house in Thailand is always one of the important design criteria. In tropical climates, the basics of right orientation of the house are to avoid the direct heat from the east and the west and embracing the natural cross ventilation through north and south. A parallel to the site setting of the house should be efficient in terms of land use in a general situation but not for this site. The diagonal lines of the site that runs east and west seem to be a good strip that suits best for building orientation. The triangle diagram was introduced to the space planning process to study the possibility to bring client requirements, building orientation and the uniqueness, all to the best design solution.

given programs of the house, the triangular layout with the open central triangle courtyard perfectly reduces one side of wasted circulation, compared to the rectangular shape. Living in a triangular space seems to cause some troubles when arranging the space planning at first. After the development process, some spaces like the living room, kitchen and closet are found to be flexible enough to take the benefit from the triangle form. A sculpture corner in the living room, a sleek triangle shaped island in the kitchen and an effect of indirect light that penetrates through the slit of the triangle end, instead of being wasted corners, those space express the unique quality of triangle shapes in interesting ways.

Thinking about the basic geometry of the rectangular or square, the longest line is the diagonal line. Taking the benefit of this rule, all the main functions of this house are arranged along the diagonal line of the site. This makes the living space face the green space as wide and deep as possible in this site. This setting also helps avoiding face to face encountering to the neighbor as well. For the

From the big picture of the triangle layout, the sharp angle of the triangle massing inspires the concept of detail design. Playing with cut geometry, a perception of sharp edges and clean lines emphasizes the clear diagram of the design from the study model to the end result.

Located in the fluctuating skyline near the suburban area of Bangkok, this geometric t h re e - sto r y d we l l i n g i s co n st r u c te d a n d substitutes some parts of the old house that are situated among the existing surroundings of a swimming pool, pool deck, the guest house and the preserved big scale of palm trees.

like a “Livable sculpture” as well as the “Comfortable sanctuary”. The graphical architectonic diagram is gradually interpreted and generated from the scientific experiment to the architectural exploration. Simultaneously, it could obviously perform the sense of belonging in different characters as follows:

The main approach entering from the main entrance is against the “big wall”, that is the main skeleton and main core of the house. This solid configuration could protect the uncontrollable and chaotic surroundings especially at the back of the house. The long and narrow rectangular glass window against this main entrance initially expresses as a focal point of the first visual approach.

“Main Core”, a solid exposed concrete massing, represents parents’ quarters, main circulation, family living room and living quarters for family A. “Crystal A”, stone cladding and transparent massing, represents living quarters for family B, formal living space and exercise room.

The preconceived idea of this residence is inspired by the house owner’s family business which is design-built as a turnkey service for the sugar production’s factories all over the world. Therefore, the “Sugar crystallization” is addressed to be an analogical interpretation for the main concept of this house.

“Crystal B”, ultra cantilevered with ivory stone cladding massing represents living quarters for family C “Crystal C”, overhanging glass window, represents the Buddha room. Moreover, the negative space of the “Crystal B” would create the sense of welcoming for the reception area beneath the long span and through a ventilated covered living terrace like the transition semi-outdoor space of “traditional Thai house” that we are familiar with.

Nevertheless, at first glance, the main skeleton located at the center of the house looks like a solid core, the composition of the opening related to the main function does not obstruct the view and of being comfortable at all. Moreover, it could make a unique motif as an innovative composition
