New Era on Eagle 99 This Fall By Kyle Knight, BAS Sports Network Eagle 99 will be entering a new era in the coming season. Sports Director Jon Kerns retired in March after 36 years behind the microphone broadcasting on Fremont Radio. Jon was replaced by Kyle Knight, who joined Eagle 99 last fall broadcasting Fremont Ross and St. Joe football and basketball games. Knight has been in radio since September of 1988 and he received his Communications degree from The University of Mount Union in 1992. Kyle had worked in the Sandusky media market since 2007. Knight will be joined by James Oddo and Scott Logan on Eagle 99 this fall. Eagle 99 will feature eight Fremont Ross football games this fall and three St. Joe games, including an SBC battle at Gibsonburg on October 19. The Little Giants were knocking on the door of the playoffs last season and finished the year at 5-5 under third year head coach Chad Long. Ross played meaningful football into week ten, but fell short of the playoffs on a rain soaked evening at Don Paul Stadium against St. Francis de Sales 21-7. Ross finished Three Rivers Athletic Conference Play with a record of 3-4, which put them in a three way tie for fourth place with rival Findlay and Clay. Whitmer ran away with the TRAC last season finishing 7-0. A road trip to Springfield will kick-off the 2018 campaign, followed by non-conference games with Southview and a trip to longtime rival Sandusky on September 7. Ross will begin TRAC play September 14 with a home game against Findlay. Brian Spicer is back for his third season at St. Joe Central Catholic after a 3-7 campaign last season. The Streaks finished 1-4 in the SBC River Division, but ended the season on a high note with a week ten victory against rival St. Mary’s 27-13. SJCC will open the 2018 campaign with non-conference games against Cardinal Stritch, at Norwalk St. Paul and Toledo Christian. The Streaks open SBC play against the SMCC Panthers at Don Paul Stadium on September 17. Five of the seven conference games for St. Joe will be on the road including games at Tiffin Calvert and Gibsonburg that can be heard live on Eagle 99. The Gibsonburg football program will be under the direction of new head coach Mike Lee, who previously coached at Clay High School. Lee takes the helm from Steve Reser, who won 36 games the last four seasons for the Golden Bears and qualified for the postseason three times. Reser is now the head coach of SBC foe Tiffin Calvert. Reser replaces Todd Fox, who is now the head coach at Norwalk.

Bellevue & Clyde Take Center Stage on 92.1 The Wolf By Kyle Knight, BAS Sports Network Bellevue and Clyde will once again be featured this season on 92.1 The Wolf, with long time play-by-play voice John Cullen calling most of the action with Mike Martin and Dale Tea. Both teams are now in their second season in the Sandusky Bay Conference Lake Division. The Lake Division was top heavy in 2017 with Sandusky joining the Redman and Fliers in post season play. The Blue Streaks went undefeated in conference play last year before suffering a Regional Quarterfinal loss to the Fliers. Bellevue finished second, behind the Streaks, in the Lake with a 4-1 conference mark and a 9-4 overall record. The Redman had a great post season run, winning two playoff games against Orange (34-6) and Clear Fork (21-13), before falling to former Northern Ohio League rival Shelby (42-21) in the Regional Championship.

Ed Nasonti begins year 28 as Bellevue’s Head Coach with hopes of claiming his first SBC crown. The Redmen have a tough non-conference slate with road trips to Canton Central Catholic and Toledo Start and home games against Clear Fork, West Holmes and Shelby. SBC play will include games at Norwalk and Sandusky, while hosting Perkins, Columbian and Clyde on October 26. Bellevue is looking to make the post season for the fifth straight season and seventh time since 2011, including their second place finish in 2012. Clyde finished 2017 with a 9-3 overall record, while finishing 3-2 in SBC Lake play. The Fliers will once again be led by 6th year head coach Ryan Carter. Carter has reached the playoffs in all five seasons and has an overall record of 49-13. The Fliers won their Regional Quarterfinal game last season at Sandusky (35-0), before falling to long time playoff nemesis Toledo Central Catholic 45-27. Central Catholic has moved up a division for the 2018 football season. The Fliers non-conference schedule includes games at Ashland and Port Clinton and home games with Toledo Start, Anthony Wayne and Toledo Bowsher. The SBC slate has Clyde traveling to Perkins, Norwalk and Bellevue and hosting Columbian and Sandusky. Bellevue won the Battle of Route 20 last season 33-14 in the first meeting between the schools as members of the SBC. The game will once again be played in week ten this season at Bellevue and broadcast on 92.1 The Wolf.

2018 WTTF High School Football Preview By Nate Mullins, BAS Sports Network With 5 games on the WTTF broadcast schedule for 2018, Tiffin Calvert football surely has the eye of the Tiffin faithful after the departure of head football coach Todd Fox and the arrival of alumni Steve Reser. Reser takes over for Fox at Tiffin Calvert after a 9-2 campaign in 2017 with Gibsonburg. Reser was able to transform the Gibsonburg program, taking the Golden Bears from 0-10 in his first season to a 50-33 overall record over 8 seasons, including three straight playoff appearances and 5 consecutive years of winning football. Todd Fox leaves for Norwalk after 7 straight playoff appearances over his 8 years at Calvert, leaving the cupboard stocked with talent at just about every position. Tiffin Calvert is coming off an 8-4 2017 season, having lost in the second round of the playoffs to Norwalk St. Paul. Replacing 12 seniors is never easy, and the Senecas will be

looking for the new class of incoming talent to step up in key spots and carry on a tradition of success. The quarterback position is up in the air after the departure of 3 year starter Park Hemminger, with three players listed at QB on the 2017 roster. Senior Trenton Cooper comes off an injury shortened 2017 season looking to solidify the position, while Junior Mitch Nielsen offers depth as he was able to gain some valuable experience at the position while Hemminger and Cooper sat out due to injury during the early part of the season. The running game has always been a staple of Tiffin Calvert football, and this year in particular figures to see an emphasis on the run with a question mark at the quarterback position and the return of Senior Austin Jones. Jones comes into 2018 after a record breaking 2017 campaign. He was a key contributor in the Senecas six game winning streak to close out the regular season, carrying 227 Please turn to Page 20

A breakout campaign like that is usually thanks to an exceptional group of blockers leading the way, and the Senecas bring back 4 players who either started or played a significant amount of time on the offensive line. On the defensive side of the ball, the Senecas have a lot of holes to fill, as six seniors from the 2017 class either started or played significant minutes on the defensive side of the ball. Tiffin Calvert is known for reloading quickly, and this season figures to be no different with an influx of incoming seniors looking to continue the tradition of success. The Senecas start out with a tough stretch to start the 2018 season, as they will play 3 teams in the first four games who made an appearance in the OHSAA playoffs in 2017, two of which will take place on the road. The Senecas will definitely be a team to watch this season, and will definitely be a very fun team to listen to! Tiffin Columbian features in four games on the WTTF broad-

cast schedule, and the Tornadoes always have the eyes and ears of the Tiffin faithful tuned in to what’s going on at Frost-Kalnow Stadium. Columbian comes into this year with high hopes, looking to put the last two years behind them and move forward into an era of sustained success that people in Tiffin can be proud of. Coach Judd Lutz enters his third season at the helm of the Tornadoes, having compiled a 2-18 record in his first two seasons. He looks to turn around a team that many in the area believe have a bright future ahead of them. 2017 was a tough year for the Tornadoes, however if there was a bright spot it was the play of do-it-all team captain Todd Simonds. Simonds had an impact on all facets of the game, as he was the starting quarterback, punter, and started at both corner and safety in the secondary. Filling those shoes will not be easy, as Simonds begins his collegiate career this season just down the road at Tiffin University. There will be opportunities for players to Please turn to Page 22

step up and fill the void, and towards the end of last year there were glimpses of what could be with some of the younger talent on the team. There are a lot of question marks surrounding the Tornadoes coming into the 2018 campaign, and they will be put to the test early and often throughout what looks to be a brutal schedule in the SBC Lake division. Having to play teams like Clyde, Bellevue, Sandusky, and Perkins is tough, and now you have Todd Fox coming over from Tiffin Calvert to coach the Norwalk Truckers, bringing 7 consecutive seasons of playoff football with him. The Tornadoes have little room for error in such a tightly contested division, and they will need to get out to a hot start as they begin the season at home facing three straight OHSAA playoff teams in Elida, Ashland, and traveling to Lucas County to take on Anthony Wayne before beginning SBC play. This Tornadoes team is young, hungry, and ready for the challenge of restoring the glory to the golden helmets. While the last two years have been tough for Tiffin Columbian fans, there is always hope in youth, and this team has an abundance of youth. After working hard to introduce a program that parents and students alike can be proud of, it’s time for Coach Lutz

to see the fruits of his labor, and that will come in the form of wins in front of the Columbian faithful. The Mohawk Warriors will be featured not once but twice this year on our WTTF broadcast schedule, taking on the Hopewell-Loudon Chieftains in Bascom on August 31st and the Seneca East Tigers in Sycamore on September 21st. The Warriors are coming off of an exciting 8-3 campaign under head coach Brett Konkle which saw them qualify for the state playoffs, and they will be looking to build upon that success. Seneca East also comes into 2018 after an 8-3 season last year under head coach Ed Phillips, and while qualifying for the playoffs last year was nice, the Tigers look to have the talent for a deep run this season. The Chieftains finished the 2017 season having won 2 of their last 4 games, however their overall record of 3-7 is not typical of a Brian Colatruglio coached team. There is hope in Bascom that this year the Chieftains will make some noise in a crowded BVC. All of these teams have been featured on WTTF’s Monday Night Sports Talk Tailgate Night series at Buffalo Wild Wings in Tiffin, and we look forward to welcoming them back to Bdubs once again this year.

Knox County Football Review and Preview By Tyler Mathias, BAS Sports Network

Danville Blue Devils

Danville finished 12-2 last year, lost in the State Final Four in Division 7. Key Losses: Quarterback Skyler Durbin, all Ohio Division 7, led team in passing and rushing, threw for over 2,300 yards in the regular season. Receiver, defensive back and returnee Tyler Mickley. First team all state, receiver Brice Berger. Defensive lineman Marshall Stull, defensive player of the year in the Central District. Returnees: Defensive lineman Dylan Wilson, kicker Reese Dorsey, Chris Greenawalt and receiver Corbin Hazen. Danville last missed the postseason in 2010. Their only conference loss last year was to Highland.

Fredericktown Freddies

Freddies went 5-5 last year. They’ll have a new head coach, Beau Wolford this year. Wolford coached last year at Cardington-Lincoln. Key Losses: QB Jimmy Nussbaum, tight end Xavier Stallard, lineman Mitch Hurlbut, and fullback Hayden Peterson. Key Returnees: QB Terry Fearn, RB Jack Fitzpatrick, and WR Jake Partington. Wolford says his offense likes to play uptempo and Page 22

fast paced. A lot more spread schemes and getting athletes the ball. He says the KMAC is tough and he feels he knows the conference well because of being with Cardington-Lincoln. Fredericktown hasn’t had more than 5 wins in a season since 2015.

East Knox Bulldogs

East Knox was 7-3 last year, 4-3 KMAC. Cody Reese will enter his second year as head coach. Key Losses: Ethan Beckett, one of the top in the conference in receiving and sacks last year. Left tackle Jake Gibsonb and Brant Moreland. Key Returnees: RB Kasson Krownapp-le who rushed for over 1,000 yards last season. QB Kadden Lester, 19 touchdown passes last year, threw for over 2,100 yards. Receiver Caleb Gallwitz, Super Q player of the year; and receiver Gage Steinmetz. Reese: “We want to get the ball to our athletes in space, experience will be key this year.”

Sandusky Area Football Season Review/Preview By Mark Fogg, BAS Sports Network

2018 marks the second year of competition in the threetiered Sandusky Bay Conference. Last year, Sandusky breezed thru the regular season with a 10-0 record and won the Lake Division crown at 5-0. However, this season they are without star quarterback Javez Alexander, who has taken his talents to Michigan State. Bellevue finished second last season followed by Clyde, Perkins, Norwalk and Tiffin Columbian. The Bay Division will see the last year in its current format as defending champion Shelby will be leaving at the end of this season. The Whippets also breezed thru last season at 10-0 and took the Divison crown at 5-0. They were followed by Edison, with Port Clinton and Oak Harbor tied

for third and Vermilion and Huron tied for fifth. The River Division will have a new look this season with Danbury and Gibsonburg entering from the Toledo Area Athletic Conference, giving the division an eight-team setup. Last year’s six-team alignment saw Tiffin Calvert winning the crown, followed by Margaretta, Lakota, Willard, St. Joe C.C. and St. Mary C.C. The Firelands Conference also had an unbeaten squad take top honors in the St. Paul Flyers. Runner-up was Ashland Crestview followed by Monroeville in third. Mapleton, Western Reserve and Plymouth tied for fourth while South Central and New London rounded out the field.
