Historic Weekend 2019 Events and Service Projects Friday, September 6 7:00pm: Flag Retirement Ceremony

Scouts are welcome to assist Ranger Rob Whitman with the retirement of flags which have become worn out. Ceremony begins at 7:30, so please plan accordingly. The ceremony will be held at the Flagpoles at the Monument.

Saturday, September 7 9am: Flag Raising

Scouts are encouraged to participate in the raising of the colors, with Rangers Rob Whitman and Jeff Ashley. The ceremony will be at the Flagpoles next to the Monument. 9:30am: Historic Camp Set-Up Service Project

For a Service Project, Scouts will assist with setting up the Historic Encampment. This includes building the Demonstration Range, building fires for cooking, unmasking tents, setting up tables and chairs, and other duties as needed. Rangers Rob Whitman and Jeff Ashley will be in charge. Scouts will meet at the Flagpoles next to the Monument. 10:00am: Chair Set-Up for Memorial Ceremony Service Project

The next Service Project will be setting-up for the Memorial Ceremony. 150 chairs will be arranged on the Lower Plaza, with some set aside for the American Legion. Scouts will meet on the Lower Plaza, with Ranger Jeff Ashley. 10:00am-5:00pm: Historic Encampment Scouts are welcome to visit the Grounds of Perry’s Monument for the Historic Encampment. With a display of U.S. Military history from the Revolution through the Second World War, Scouts will be able to talk with Reenactors and Demonstrators about their equipment.


Also available will be an Historic Carpenter and an Historic Smith demonstrating their trades. This is a fantastic opportunity for Scouts to explore the past in a living environment. 10:30am: Program Hand Outs, Chair Tear-Down

The next set of Service Projects will have Scouts passing out the Memorial Ceremony Programs prior to the ceremony. Scouts will meet at the Lower Plaza with Ranger Jeff Ashley. An additional Service Project will also meet at this time, and will involve the chair tear-down once the Ceremony is complete. Scouts will also meet on the Lower Plaza, with Ranger Jeff. One rack of chairs will be taken to the VIP Tent, as well. 11:00am: MEMORIAL CEREMONY BEGINS Scouts are encouraged to visit Perry’s Monument for the Memorial Ceremony commemorating the 206 anniversary of the Battle of Lake Erie. Guest Speakers will include Captain William Sabatini and three rangers representing the U.S. officers buried in the Monument. At the conclusion of the Ceremony, the Scouts assisting with tear-down will assist Ranger Jeff Ashley. 1:00pm: Small Arms Demonstration Scouts are welcome to view the Black Powder Demonstrations throughout the day. Flintlock Muskets and Rifles will be fired by trained reenactors and demonstrators. There will be a Ranger-Led Program along with the firing. This is a fantastic opportunity to, again, experience history in a living environment. 1:00pm: Maintenance Service Projects

Scouts will assist the Maintenance Rangers with planting flower bulbs. The meeting location is the Maintenance Bay, with Rangers Nancy Tanner and Hank Polcyn. 1:45pm: Grand Parade Line-Up Line-Up for the Grand Parade will begin at the Put-In-Bay High School (281 Concord Ave) beginning at this time. Scouts will be directed to their place in line,


with the parade beginning promptly at 2:15pm. The parade will take a route through the downtown village, and end at the Flagpoles of Perry’s Monument. Shortly after the parade’s conclusion, Scouts are encouraged to view the Artillery Demonstration which will be on the Park Lawn. There will be a number of artillery pieces fired off, including the 32-lb Naval Carronade.


Post-Parade, Approximately 3:00pm: Chair Set-Up for the Toledo Quintet

Scouts will assist Ranger Jeff Ashley, once the parade is complete, with the set-up of 150 chairs for the Toledo Brass Quintet at 5:00pm. Scouts will meet on the Back Porch of the Visitor Center. 3:30pm: 200 Years of the U.S. Military program Scouts are encouraged to visit this special program, commemorating 200 years of U.S. Military History. Ranger Rob Whitman will bring visitors from the Revolution, the Legion of the United States under General “Mad” Anthony Wayne, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, both World Wars, and modern conflicts. Living History will be on full display, and this is a wonderful experience for the Scouts. 5:00pm: Range Tear-Down

Scouts will assist with closing up the Historic Encampment Firing Range and readying the camp for the close of day. Rangers Jeff Ashley and Rob Whitman will be the points of contact, and Scouts will meet at the Flagpoles next to the Monument. 5:00pm: Toledo Brass Quintet Concert A free concert will begin at 5:00pm featuring the Toledo Brass Quintet. The concert will continue until 6:30pm. 6:30pm: Flag Ceremony

Scouts assist Ranger Rob Whitman with retiring the colors for the day. Scouts will meet at the Flagpoles next to Perry’s Monument. 6:30pm: Concert Tear-Down and VIP Set-Up (2SP) Scouts will assist with tearing-down the Toledo Quintet Concert chairs, and relocating them to the VIP Tent. Tables will also be moved and set-up in the VIP Tent. Scouts will meet with Ranger Jeff in the Visitor Center Parking Lot. Dusk: “Lights of Peace” Harbor Illumination


Scouts are encouraged to view this significant and reflective event, which will see flares set off and burnt along the North Seawall and across the entire island.


Sunday, September 8 8:00am: Memorial Opens for Scouts Scouts are welcome to visit Perry’s Monument before leaving the island. The doors will open at 8:00am, for any Scouts, but especially the ones with further drives. Please leave all large bags, backpacks, or daypacks either in camp or in personal or troop vehicles, as they will not be allowed to go to the top of the Monument. 9am: Flag Raising (1SP) Scouts are encouraged to participate in the raising of the colors, with Rangers Rob Whitman and Jeff Ashley.
