Fremont Ross

Fans of Fremont Ross will need a program for the first few games of the 2019 season. The Little Giants will replace a talented Senior class that led the program to back-to-back five win seasons. Ross will have to replace starting quarterback Hayden Lehmann, who finished second in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference (TRAC) with 1926 passing yards and 20 touchdowns. Lehman’s top targets in Noah Hotz and Bryce McKinstry are also gone this season. The two combined for over 1200 yards receiving and 91 receptions. Ross coach Chad Long will also have to find a replacement for his top two running backs from a season ago in Ethan Chumley (416 yards on 105 carries) and Deryante Hardin (296 yards on 69 carries). On the defensive side, Ross will be without star linebackers Caleb Wood and Garrett Schneider, who were both named to the TRAC’s All Defensive First Team last season. “It’s hard to replace all the offensive fire power we had at QB, and WRs with Hotz and McKinstry being gone,” said Long. “However, it’s time for the underclassmen to step up and perform. We have a 3 QB race this summer with Cyrus Lagrou (Senior), Davonte Jones (Junior) and Kaden Holmes (Freshman). It’s exciting to see them compete. At receiver we still have deep threat Andrew Born (1st team TRAC specialist returner) and newcomers Kalijah Alejandro (Sophomore) and Spencer Price (Junior).” “I thought going into off season it was going to be hard replacing the skill positions, but we have a lot of young talent,” resumed Long. “At linebacker we can’t ever replace Schneider and Wood. However, we will have kids ready to fill in and do their best there.” The cupboard is not completely bear. First Team TRAC Defensive Lineman Dontrez Brown is back for his senior season. Brown will play for Bowling Green State University beginning in 2020, but this season will be back to anchor the Little Giant’s defense. “Dontrez means a ton to Fremont Football,” said Long. “He’s a special player who will be deeply missed after this year. We, as a staff, don’t really have to expect much out of him because he expects a lot out of himself. He’s a great team leader and leads by example. All the kids see he does it the right way, in the classroom and on the field.” Please turn to Page 5

Clyde Fliers

The Clyde Fliers (7-3) advanced to the high school football playoffs for the sixth consecutive season in 2018, while finishing first in the Sandusky Bay Conference (SBC) Lake Division (4-1, tied with Tiffin Columbian).   The six team division of the SBC sent four teams to the playoffs and two teams to the Regional Championship (Norwalk and Sandusky). Coach Ryan Carter said the league will be tough again in 2019.   “The league will be the best that I have seen it,” said Carter.

Ross and St. Joe Continued from Page 3

Ross will open at home against Tiffin Columbian on August 30, while TRAC play begins on September 20 at Don Paul Stadium against Toledo St. Francis. Nine of the ten Ross games can be heard live on Eagle 99 and wfroradio.com.

SJCC

St. Joe Central Catholic is returning a ton of offensive fire power this season. The Crimson Streaks finished 5-5 a year ago and will return its number one rusher and passer in senior Chase Harrison. Harrison ran for 1015 yards, while passing for 765 yards as a Junior. His top target was Grant Stepanic, who caught 27 balls for 419 yards and five touchdowns as a Junior. “We definitely will need the skill players to carry the load,” said coach Brian Spicer. “They will have to create big play opportunities for us on the perimeter until our front players get settled in. The inexperience up front always takes time to get caught up as the season progresses, but having such a veteran group of skill guys back really does allow us to still attack defenses on multiple levels.” “We don’t talk much about wins as a goal,” continued Spicer on the teams 2019 goals. “We want to be competitive in all our games and play our best. We don’t know how good anyone we play will be and can’t do anything to change that. However, we will eventually get a feel for how good we can be and then try to find ways to get better, especially as the season goes.” The Crimson Streaks open the season at Cardinal Stritch on Saturday, August 31 at 1 p.m. You can hear the game on Eagle 99.

“Honestly, you could put all the teams in a hat and draw an order and have better luck picking it. Tiffin won our league with us and Norwalk won our region last year and they have a bunch of guys back. Tiffin does as well. Sandusky has the player of the year back and the best player in our area (Terion Stewart). Bellevue beat us last year and has a bunch back as well. Clyde and Perkins have guys back and will be in the mix. So it will be who plays better on each given night. “   Carter says the off season program went very well. “We have had high attendance and our kids are working very hard. We took some unexpected hits in the off season, but our kids are stepping up Please turn to Page 15

Gibsonburg

The Golden Bears made the playoffs again in 2019 after winning the SBC River Division outright (7-0, 9-1 Overall) in Mike Lee’s first year. Gibsonburg has advanced to the post season in each of the last four years. Theo Hernandez is back for his Senior season after rushing for 700 yards and nine touchdowns in 2018. Gibsonburg will open the season against Ottawa Hills on August 30.

Oak Harbor

The Rockets made the post season for the first time since 2007 last year, while winning the SBC Bay Division (4-0, 9-1 Overall). Jac Alexander is back to lead Mike May’s offense. Alexander threw for 1293 yards, rushed for 1021 and had 26 touchdowns as a Junior. Oak Harbor will travel to Fostoria to begin the season.

Lakota

The Raiders finished 4-6 a year ago under coach Mike Lento and 2-5 in the SBC River Division. Trevor Franks carried the rock 276 times as a Junior for 1711 yards and 21 touchdowns. Lakota will begin the season at Mohawk High School.

Woodmore

The Wildcats were winless last season (0-10, 0-7 NBC). The running back trio of Nate Fligor, D.J. Melter, and Dylan LaFountain all return for Woodmore. They rushed for nearly 1100 yards last season and averaged 4.5 yards per carry. Woodmore will open the season by hosting Northwood.

2019 WOLF Football Continued from Page 5 and working very hard.” The Fliers moved down a division this year and will now be in Division 4, Region 14. Clyde will be in the same region as rival Bellevue and fellow SBC schools, Perkins, Port Clinton, Vermilion, Huron and Edison. What will it take for the Fliers to return to the postseason this season for a seventh consecutive year? “I have been fortunate to coach with great coaches and we have hard working kids,” said Carter. “We need to play well each week and try to get enough wins to get in the playoffs. This year will be our hardest year to date to make it in the playoffs due to our schedule. We have long travel and much larger schools to play all year. Ryan Lozier and Gunner Golden led the offense in 2018. Lozier passed for 878 yards and 7 touchdowns, while Golden rushed for 1158 yards and 13 scores. The Fliers start the season by hosting Toledo St. Francis on Friday, August 30 and you can hear the game on 92.1 The WOLF.

He also was the second leading rusher for the Redmen with 475 yards and two scores. Ray lost his top two targets to graduation, however classmate Hunter Martin returns after snagging 17 balls for 241 yards and one touchdown in 2018. Bellevue Redmen Bellevue will start the season at Port Clinton on August 30 and For the first time in five seasons Bellevue missed the playoffs return home the following Friday to host the University School (the under long time coach Ed Nasonti. After starting 0-3 last year, the Redmen went 4-3 over the final game will be carried live on 92.1 The Wolf).

2019 Tiffin High Schools Football Preview By Nate Mullins, BAS Sports Network

When it comes to sports, football in Ohio is second to none, and it is an eye on is Sophomore Brody Conley, who led the team in tackles with evident when you travel to the different stadiums around the state and you 59 as a freshman. Conley is a national champion wrestler, finishing 4th in see just how many people truly care about the sport. Friday nights in the fall the OHSAA State Wrestling Championship in 2019. are reserved for High School Football in the state of Ohio, this is especially true in the Seneca county area. Tiffin Calvert Senecas

Tiffin Columbian Tornadoes Head coach Judd Lutz is entering his 4th season at the helm at Tiffin Columbian, and after a rocky start it certainly looks like he and his staff have restored the traditions and consistency that TC is known for historically. Columbian is coming off of a remarkable turnaround season, which saw them go from a winless season in 2017 to winning a share of the 2018 SBC Lake Division and qualifying for the state playoffs for the first time in 4 years, finishing with an 8-2 regular season record. The only two losses came at the hands of state playoff qualifiers Anthony Wayne and division rival Clyde, who also took a share of the SBC title. TC returns in 2019 boasting an array of weapons on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, looking to pick up where they left off last season. Leading the way on offense is Senior quarterback Chase Frankhouser, coming off an excellent season in which led the SBC in completion percentage among starting quarterbacks. Frankhouser compiled over 1,200 yards passing, tossing 12 tds and only 6 interceptions. He was also the second leading rusher for Tiffin Columbian, running for 387 yards and 3 more scores. Frankhouser missed three games due to injury, which led to the emergence of Nick Koerper as an all-around threat in Lutz’s offense. Koerper, who will be a senior in 2019, was the leading rusher and receiver for TC last season, with 21 catches for 495 yards and 5 tds as a receiver, and 455 yards on the ground to go along with 6 more tds. Defense is where the Tornadoes really improved from the season before, allowing only 14.7 points per game last season to go along with 21 takeaways. The defense returns several starters from last year, including Senior Drake Devore, who is coming off an excellent junior year. Devore was second on the team with 6 sacks coming from multiple positions on the defensive line, trailing only Kesean Hatlay who finished second in the SBC with 7 sacks on the season. Hatlay is entering his junior year, and looks to find his way onto the field more often this season. Another name to keep

Page 16

Head Coach Steve Reser is coming into his second season at the helm at Tiffin Calvert, and things could not have gone much better for coach Reser in his first season at the helm. Coming into the 2018 season, everyone knew Tiffin Calvert was going to be good; the only question was how good could they be? Finishing the regular season at 9-1 with a share of the SBC River division title, Calvert would go on to lose the opening game of the 2018 OHSAA State Playoffs to Pandora-Gilboa. To say that the 2018 senior class was special would be an understatement, as all 9 seniors were major contributors on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Calvert had just 33 players on their roster last year, so a majority of them played on both sides of the ball. The incoming class of seniors will have some big shoes to fill for sure, and they look to be up to the task. Aaron Rombach is coming off a season where he filled many roles, and flourished in just about every one of them. As a running back he carried the ball for almost 300 yards on the season to go along with 6 tds, backing up the SBC’s second leading rusher Austin Jones. With Jones leaving to graduation and moving on to play at Tiffin University, Calvert will look to Rombach to be the feature back this year. Mitch Nielsen comes into his senior year having played many roles for Tiffin Calvert over the years. We’ve seen Nielsen at quarterback, wide receiver, running back, just about anywhere the coaches ask him to play. This year Nielsen looks to make an impact on both sides of the ball, as a receiver last year he amassed over 300 yards receiving to go along with 30 tackles as a defensive back. Some other players to keep an eye on include Seniors Mike Casale and Vinny Volpe, as they look to lead the way on the defensive line. Junior Jack Shultz looks to fill the shoes at the quarterback position, taking over for Trenton Cooper after he finished his career at Calvert with a dominant senior season. Junior Nick Seifert is another player to watch, as he finished his first full season in football with 12 catches for 197 yards and 3 scores.

Knox County Football Review and Preview By Tyler Mathias, BAS Sports Network

East Knox Looks to Make Playoffs in 2019 Two straight years the East Knox Bulldogs have finished 9th in the Final Computer Rankings in Division Six Region 23, just on the outside looking in for a playoff spot. Head Coach Cody Reese is hoping experience and a great mindset will take his team over the hump in 2019 and to its first playoff appearance since 2005. Reese will have to find someone to help replace the nearly 1,400 yards rushing and 29 rushing touchdowns that Kasson Krownapple provided last year. Back though are first team All State selections quarterback Kadden Lester who threw for over 2,300 yards and over 20 touchdowns last year and Caleb Gallwitz who had nearly 1,000 yards receiving in 2018. The Bulldogs have protected their home field going 11-3 in Howard since 2016, while their offense averaged 42 points per game last season. Reese says the team has experience and the goals are to win the conference and make the playoffs.

Danville Looks for Bounce Back Season For Danville Head Football Coach Ed Honabarger having week 11 off is a rare occurrence during the High School Football Playoffs. Honabarger and his Blue Devils failed to make it to the postseason last year for the first time since 2010 as they finished 4-6 for the team’s first losing season since 2009. The Blue Devils faced a rugged schedule to open last season going 0-5. The teams in those five losses combined to go 46-11 last season. Honabarger said his team was disappointed the playoff streak ended, but he says you sometimes have time when you’re not as successful as you want to be. Honabarger says, along with skill player Alex Holt back, there is experience at linebacker. He says the team needs to start better and faster, start the season off hotter and grow up quick. Honabarger mentioned his team will run some spread and some run formations. Danville last missed the playoffs in back to back years in 2009 and 2010.

Freddies Want to be Competitive in 2019 Beau Wolford’s first season for the Fredericktown Freddies didn’t quite go as he hoped, but with a returning quarterback and Freshmen hungry to contribute. the team is hoping to be more competitive in 2019. Fredericktown finished last year 1-9 and their lone win was a 39-8 victory over winless Mount Gilead. It was the first time the Freddies have finished 1-9 or worse since 2004. Wolford says despite the youth that his team is looking to compete within the league. Back Is Terry Fearn at quarterback, he threw for nearly 800 yards and ran for almost 500 last year. Mason Finnell, who averaged 11 yards per catch last year, is

also back. The defense will have to be better. The Freddies only had two games last year where they allowed less than 27 points in a game. Wolford says the team’s biggest struggle will be up front. Offensively the Freddies had 7 games last year where the offense scored 7 points or less.

Centerburg Trojans 2019 Football Preview The Trojans finished 5-5 last year but they return 9 players on offense and 7 on defense as they look to take a leap this year. Head Coach Andy Colella says his team has good depth and 6 Seniors that have experience in playoff games. Colella said “We took some right steps forward alittle bit last year” He says the hopes are to win the conference and make the playoffs. The Trojans also moved to Region 22 from Region 23 in Division Six. Colella says he feels the move will help Centerburg. The Trojans want to look to spread things out. Centerburg last made the playoffs in 2016, they finished 5th in the KMAC last year. The Trojans will return quarterback John Sheasby. He threw for nearly 500 yards and rushed for over 800 yards last season.

Mount Vernon Football Hopeful for 2019 The Mount Vernon Yellow Jackets are beginning year four under Head Coach Mike Kerr and Kerr hopes this is the year the team gets over the hump. Mount Vernon finished 3-7 last season and lost quarterback/linebacker Noah Hubbard as well as skill player Ashton Fisher and lineman Harry Ogle off of last years team. This year Kerr says his team will be balanced offensively but that it starts with being physical running the ball, he said that they also have weapons on the outside. Running back Wyatt Gregory is back and Kerr says he’s been great in the weight room. Also back are speedsters Cory Berg, finished second in the state in the 300 meter hurdles and Gavin Moyer who coach says catches some tough balls. Senior Trey Davidson and Junior Britten Long are competing to be the starting quarterback. Kerr said Long showed promise last year but suffered a broken collarbone. Kerr stated the team’s goal is to start fast by beating Marion Harding in week one. The motto is win today for 2019. Kerr says the team has great senior leadership and this could be the year the team gets over the hump. Kerr also said the fans should be excited, as young guys have stepped up to join the senior leaders. He says they’ll be a hard nosed physical team, and they had good numbers too with 65-70 coming out.

By Mark Fogg, BAS Sports Network This year’s SBC battle will be fierce in all three divisions. In the Lake Division, four of the six teams were playoff qualifiers in 2018 in Tiffin Columbian, Clyde, Norwalk and Sandusky. Columbian and Clyde shared the division championship and are favored to contend this season along with Norwalk. The Bay Division brings back a pair of playoff teams in division champion Oak Harbor and Huron. The big shakeup this season will come in the River Division which will add Hopewell-Loudon to the lineup. But late in the summer, St. Mary Central Catholic had to withdraw from competition due to low numbers. The Panthers will be playing 8-man football this season with the hopes of returning to the 11-man format in 2020. So there will still be eight teams vying for this year’s River Division crown, which was won last year by Gibsonburg. Tiffin Calvert was the runner-up and both those teams qualified for the playoffs as well.
