Reflexology + Reiki - BY: DAWN ST.VINCENT -

O

ur world is filled with energy. Solar, electrical and magnetic energy are some examples of the energy which surrounds all life. But within us there is also a life force energy. This is the energy which animates us, without it we die.

There is a direct correlation between the flow of energy and problems or difficulties caused when energy becomes disrupted or blocked. Using electrical energy as an example, when the current is impeded due to a broken connection it cannot complete the cycle along the line. However, once the connection is repaired and restored, energy flows freely once more. The same is true for our physical bodies. When we feel stress or suffer trauma, energy is blocked and all aspects of our life – body mind and spirit are affected. Long term effects of blocked or disrupted energy will eventually manifest in a variety of ways such as dis-ease and anxiety. Reflexology, Reiki and Integrated Energy Therapy are three natural modalities gaining popularity for their abilities to return balance and allow the body to do what it was created to do – heal itself. Reflexology Reflexology is far more than a glorified foot or hand massage. Based on the principle the feet and hands mirror the body image, the foot is divided into zones with each area corresponding to a certain part of the body. By stimulating specific reflex areas a beneficial response is achieved in corresponding areas of the body. For example a reflexologist will treat heartburn issues by applying pressure to the solar plexus reflex area on the foot or the hand to relieve discomfort. Pain caused by a compression of the sciatic nerve (sciatica) may be relieved by focusing treatment on the sciatic nerve reflexes on hands or feet. Reiki Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is an ancient Japanese technique used to reduce stress and promote relaxation allowing a body to heal. By definition, Rei means “universal” and Ki means “life force.” With the laying on of hands a practitioner becomes a conduit to channel life force energy and clear blockages to improve the energetic connection. Reiki is not a religion and will not harm. With Divine consciousness, Reiki will flow where it is needed. Integrated Energy Therapy Integrated Energy Therapy (I.E.T.) is similar to Reiki in the sense that both involve a laying on of hands by a practitioner to channel energy and clear blocks within our system. However, I.E.T. works on a cellular level to “get the issues out of your tissues.” The body is made of cells which are in a constant flux of death and renewal. The cycle of death and regeneration depends upon the cell. For example, skin cells last an average of 2 – 3 weeks while blood cells are replaced at four months. Inevitably, the cellular cycle results in the replacement of the entire body. We literally aren’t the person we used to be! 4 |

Each cell created carries within it, the same information received from the original cell (an individual’s DNA blueprint) in addition to its own particular cellular history. Therefore when an injured cell is regenerated, it also regenerates the injury. By integrating energy through designated points, issues within cell memory are released and healed. What is involved and what can I expect from a treatment? Reflexology treatments begin with a quick assessment for cuts, bruises, calluses and temperature variations between feet. The procedure then begins as the right foot receives a reflexology massage. If a client is being seen for a specific reason such as headaches, much of the treatment will be focused to the corresponding aspect on the foot. Following the treatment, the right foot is wrapped in a towel before continuing reflexology work on the left foot. It has been my experience that a combination of Reflexology and Reiki (R & R) during a treatment provides the greatest benefit for the client. Therefore, my treatments begin with reflexology work on each foot for twenty minutes, followed by twenty minutes of Reiki. Every individual will have their own experience receiving Reiki or Integrated Energy Therapy. Some feel a tingling throughout their body. Others may feel pulsing energy or nothing significant at all. What happens next? After a treatment has restored balance to the body, it naturally detoxifies, releases and heals. Sometimes in the process of detoxifying, symptoms may worsen before improving. Some individuals feel tired after a treatment, others feel rejuvenated. Others still, may feel emotional or have flu-like symptoms. Most simply feel a sensation of peace and well-being. Drinking water assists in the cleansing process. What is Mobile R&R? Mobile R & R is a Reflexology and Reiki housecall allowing the client to receive treatments in the comfort of their home or in a group setting. Reflexology, Reiki and Integrated Energy Therapy are not substitutes for medical intervention. They are non-invasive choices to be used in conjunction with traditional medicine to improve results. 7 REASONS EVERY WOMAN SHOULD TRY CROSSFIT By Daria Salamon

B

y now, you have probably heard about CrossFit, the latest trend exploding in the fitness world. There’s a running joke amongst CrossFitters: How do you know someone does CrossFit? Because they can’t stop talking about CrossFit. CrossFit is a combination of weightlifting, gymnastics and varied high intensity training. This means that in any given one-hour class you could be squatting with weight, swinging kettle bells, doing hand stands working on pull ups, flipping tractor tires or running with a sand bag slung over your shoulder. It might just be time to hop on this bandwagon and give it a try because CrossFit is here to stay! When Undefeated owner and head coach Matt Winchar opened up his box three years ago (box is the term used to describe the pared down, no-frills CrossFit facilities), there were only a few other boxes in Winnipeg. But when Undefeated outgrew its original digs and expanded to its new Waverley location this past fall there were about ten boxes, with more set to open. Virtually every borough of the city will have its own box! The fastest growing segment of the population to take on CrossFit is women; 60% of all CrossFitters are female. And there are many reasons CrossFit is a great fit for women. Here is a list:

1

CrossFit Destroys the Workout Blahs. Have you ever wandered aimlessly and uninspired around a gym, not sure what to do? Hitting up the usual machines? Working the same muscle groups? CrossFit workouts are innovative and programmed. All athletes in a class are doing the same WOD (workout of the day), however, it is scaled to meet the needs of each individual. “It’s challenging, rewarding and organized; it’s not something you’re going to bail on or dread,” says longtime Undefeated CrossFit member Jessika Ellement. 10 |

2

Time. In a one-hour workout, CrossFit will pack in strength training, high intensity conditioning and components of gymnastics. It is hands-down, bangfor-your-buck fitness for those who don’t have several hours a day to spend in a gym. Participating three times a week will get you results – whether you want to lose weight, improve your conditioning or just be able to throw your kids around in a pool. Show up four or five times a week and you’ll be kicking some serious ass.

3

Community. An unexpected benefit of CrossFit is the acceptance of all ages, sizes and abilities. Classes are small and designed to be supportive. Regardless of whether you blast your way, or grind your way through a WOD, you’ll always be met with a high five from the other athletes when you finish. A lot of friendships have been forged at the Undefeated box. The women occasionally organize Wine and Wod evenings, and there are 30-Day Nutrition Challenges that include social events. Everyone supports one another both inside and beyond the walls of the gym.

4

Confidence and Empowerment. As Jessika Ellement points out, “If you can do 100 burpees, you can do just about anything.” CrossFit gets people doing things they never imagined – like handstand walking or even a proper squat. Winchar says that as a coach he sees a massive shift in confidence when an athlete conquers a scary box jump or finishes a grueling WOD. CrossFit invites challenge, and sometimes pushes women outside of their comfort zones – particularly when it comes to strength. This leads to a serious sense of accomplishment and empowerment.

5

Confront Your Weaknesses. How often in life do we avoid things that we are bad at? CrossFit doesn’t let you evade your weaknesses, or goats as they’re called in CrossFit, because it’s all programmed. This ultimately results in stronger, more-well rounded athletes. So, if pull-ups are your weakness and pull-ups are in the WOD, then you’re doing pull ups. Many | 11

people can’t do one unassisted pull up or box jump when they join CrossFit, but it’s only a matter of time before participants achieve their first milestones – whether it be a handstand, box jump or Olympic lift. Everything is introduced and taught through scaling and progressions. Classes are led by certified coaches who are attentive to the needs of each individual athlete.

6

Strong is Beautiful. Winchar calls it a shift in perspective from waist size to weight size, and losing the mental burden of being skinny to being proud and strong. Ellement claims that CrossFit has taught her to appreciate her body for what it can do, rather than what it looks like and “strong is sexy and it’s about damn time everyone else got the memo!” The benefits of strength and lifting heavier weight are numerous; it’s an effective way to achieve weight loss and increases bone density. (And while strength and not appearance is the focus of CrossFit, toned arms in a sleeveless dress are a pretty sweet side effect of getting strong!)

7

Being A Role Model. It’s not unusual to see kids hanging around the gym while their moms work out. Winchar says, “this morning Tanya had her son at the gym and he saw his mom grunt and sweat her way through her work out. Working out isn’t foreign to this kid. It’s what his mom does, so now it’s what he wants to do.” Being fit and strong sets a stellar example for children, friends and family. We live in a supersized world, rife with obesity and CrossFit combats that by exemplifying strength, discipline and endurance. CrossFit is challenging, inspiring and fun! It is for everyone. Most boxes offer a free trial class. Jump on that bandwagon. You won’t regret it. Daria Salamon is a Winnipeg writer and CrossFit junkie at Undefeated CrossFit.

Nuttin’ But An Almond Butter Thang - BY: CHARMAINE SAN PEDRO A perfect Sunday calls for a perfect cookie. So I made some and they turned out perfect. As always, this cookie recipe is gluten free, refined sugar free, vegan, preservative free, high in protein and low carb. They’re soft, moist and will melt in your mouth. Peanut butter cookies have nothing on these bad boys! I stopped eating organic peanut butter for a year now only to discover the miraculous-ness of almond butter. Almonds have a special place in my kitchen. I consume them everyday from raw almonds to almond milk, you can say I’m an almond fiend. They’re delicious and offer so many nutritional benefits. More than peanuts. But let’s talk about the difference between both nut butters…

Even though pure almond butter and peanut butter hold similar niches in a healthy diet, almond butter provides a bit more health advantages. Almond butter has a high vitamin E content. Approximately one tablespoon of it has 4 mg of vitamin E compared to peanut butter only having 1 mg per serving. The magnesium intake is also double with almonds. One tablespoon of almond butter has 45 mg of it, while peanut butter has roughly 26 mg. That’s quite a differOpting for almond butter over peanut butter ence! According to a few studies, almonds (raw, proves advantageous due to its higher iron, fiber roasted or butter form) can aid in lowering choand anti oxidant content. Great for those who are lesterol. The difference is that almond butter has low in iron, especially vegans like me! Though 50% more monounsaturated fats (the good stuff) both rich in protein, peanut butter is often full and 25% less saturated fats (the bad stuff!) The of hydrogenated oils, sugars and preservatives. good fats are the fats that reduce levels of choEver wonder why there’s more commercial pealesterol and decrease the risk of heart problems. nut butters on the shelves and why they’re much An excellent food source for those who are trying cheaper than other nut butters? There’s a reason. to lose weight and build muscle too! Even if you do buy organic peanut butter in its purest form, they’re genetically one of the most Making a small move by replacing peanut butter mucus forming foods out there. A build up of with almond butter regularly can actually make a mucus can disrupt proper digestion and lead to difference to the body. So let’s make a difference congestion. by baking almond butter cookies! Nuttin’ you can’t handle! What you need: 1/2 cup of roasted (or raw) almond butter 1/2 cup of granulated xylitol (sweetner) 1/4 cup of almond flour/meal 3 tablespoons of coconut flour 1/4 tsp of baking soda 14 |

1 flax egg (1 tbsp of ground flax meal plus 2 tbsp of water) 1/4 cup of unsweetened almond milk 1 tsp of pure vanilla extract 1 tablespoon of organic cinnamon (optional)

1. Cream together almond butter, sugar, flax egg and almond milk in a bowl. 2. In another bowl, combine the dry ingredients. Gradually add dry to wet ingredients. Mix until fully combined. 3. Scoop and form into balls and press with a fork in a criss cross pattern on a lined cookie sheet. 4. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until edges turn brown. 5. Let cool. FYI If you take them out too early, they will be soft and gooey. I did making the first batch and I actually preferred them! I also burned my mouth because I was an eager cookie monster. Approx 90 calories per cookies. Size depending. 3 grams of carbs. Try not to eat the whole batch.

While you’re munching, let me introduce to you my sweet friend in this recipe: Mr Xylitol. One thing that a sugar free lifestyle has taught me to use is this. I do use stevia as well but don’t prefer the taste as much. It is the sweetest of all natural sugar substitutes and doesn’t have a funny aftertaste. Some of you have heard of him and the rest of you might think it’s Sweet N Low’s cousin. Don’t worry – it’s nothing like aspartame and nothing like cane sugar. In fact, did you know that fibers of fruits and vegetables naturally contain xylitol. Here’s some reasons for incorporating this oddly named sweetener into your sugar detox: • Insulin/Blood

Glucose: Xylitol is absorbed more slowly than sugar. No rapid sugar spikes! Xylitol is typically a wonderful substitute for diabetics and it’s candida friendly as it has little effect on glucose and none on insulin.

• Dental

Health: Researchers have stated that when used regularly, xylitol can help to prevent tooth decay. Xylitol not only prevents bacterial growth, but also helps to remineralize teeth that already have begun to decay. To reap the benefits, you can opt to buy xylitol gum rather than sugar free gum containing aspartame and other gunk. Spry has a great line of them. •A

few other things to mention: zero net carbs, fewer calories than table sugar, low glycemic index, plant sourced sweetener made from naturally occurring material from fruits and you won’t taste much of a difference. • Gut

Bacteria and Yeast (sounds gross but someone has to talk about it): Xylitol is actually a prebiotic, which encourages good gut flora. These are helpful microorganisms that reside in your digestive tract. Sugar on the other hand encourages the growth of unhealthy bacteria and yeast in the gut. Xylitol is an excellent choice for those who cope with chronic yeast infections like candida. Unlike some artificial sweeteners (like splenda and aspartame) xylitol does not encourage the growth of yeast in the gut. Take in moderation! Some people may experience gastrointestinal problems. Because xylitol is not fully broken down in your system it can have a laxative effect. You may feel discomfort include bloating, gas, and abdominal pain and cramping if consuming too much. What I love about Xylo Sweet’s xylitol is that they’re committed to a non GMO (not corn derived), gluten free product that contains nothing but 100% xylitol. So no additives, sneaky preservatives or even other unhealthy sugar alcohols like malitol. The texture of the sweetener is granulated and gritty which works well in this almond butter cookie recipe. You can also grind them in your blender if using them in cakes and other recipes that call for more liquid. You can buy this product at most local health stores or online. Stay naturally nutty and sweet, my friends! | 15

Rainbow Chard Wrap + Vegan Spicy Sauce - BY: CHARMAINE SAN PEDRO It’s Sunday. Also known as the “lazy day!” And lazy days call for hearty meals. Don’t you agree? I love hearty meals. You know the food that makes you feel good and makes everything better? Yeah, you know. Roasted garlic sweet potatoes, sprouted mung beans, fresh cut raw veggies on rainbow chard paired with homemade spicy sauce definitely hits the spot. It’s nutrient dense, nature approved and absolutely….deliciously….divine! I’ve been itching to use up my bag of dry mung beans (also known as moong beans) for awhile now. Mung beans can get neglected because of it’s more popular cousins, chickpeas and lentils. However, they are also nutrient rich, boast added 16 |

plant based protein and low in calories. So with a little bit of soaking and sprouting, they went perfectly with the sweet potatoes. Just the right amount of low GI starch and complex carbs one would need for a hearty yet healthy dish! I think you’ll happily agree that it is indeed a tasty combination. Traditionally, tortilla, wheat or grain wraps are more commonly used to bundle food fillings. In this recipe, I replaced the grains with a healthier, more sufficient alternative using a large organic rainbow chard leaf. Not only did it reduce the amount of simple calories, it also added a good alkaline balance to the meal. The collaboration of the greens with the cooked veggies and raw veggies provide live enzymes to promote good digestion and optimal health.

WRAP

SAUCE

One large organic and local rainbow swiss chard leaf, thoroughly washed and loved

1 cup of raw almonds (soaked for 30-60 minutes if possible)

Soaked and sprouted green mung beans (optimal time is about 4-6 hours or overnight if you can)

1/4-1/2 tsp of chipotle pepper spice (the more, the spicier!)

1 large sweet potato, cut into desired chunks Half a large cucumber, diced Half a yellow bell pepper, diced 2 garlic cloves, finely minced Baby organic spinach and carrots Half a lemon Spices: 1/4 tsp of cumin powder, chili powder, dried thyme leaves, black pepper, cayenne pepper, coriander Coconut oil 1. In a small sauce pan, boil soaked mung beans for about 30 minutes until nicely soft. In another sauce pan, boil sweet potatoes until ‘al dente’. Leave the skin on for added fiber and nutrients! 2. In a skillet, heat coconut oil and garlic until golden brown. Add boiled sweet potatoes and mung beans and spices. Mix until nicely cooked. Alternatively, you can roast the sweet potatoes in the oven at 400 F. 3. Add raw veggies (cucumbers and bell peppers) onto the swiss chard leaf. Squeeze lemon evenly on the raw veggies. Lastly, add cooked sweet potatoes and mung beans. Pair with baby spinach and baby carrots on the side. 4.Serve with some yummy homemade sauce.

1/4 tsp of cayenne pepper 1 1/4 tsp of paprika 1/4 tsp of chili powder 1/4 tsp of dried oregano 1/4 tsp of onion powder 1/4 tsp of cumin 1 garlic clove, crushed 3 squeezes of fresh lemon juice (about 3-4 tbsp) 1/2 cup of filtered water, cold 2 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil 1. Combine all of the ingredients in a high power blender. Blend until it has a nice thick consistency. This should take a few mere minutes. 2. This sauce can be more like a dressing if you add more water to thin it out. 3. Keep refrigerated in a sealed container. Lasts for about 5 days. Supplements for Women, Where to start? Whenever we have women enter our store who may not have a lot of knowledge behind supplements-which to use, how many to take, which ones are designed for them, we ask a series of questions about their lifestyle, diet, activity level, health and preferences. With a good understanding of these basic factors, we use our knowledge and expertise to suggest which supplements would have the most benefit for the individual. We want to know what areas in someone’s daily life can be improved. With our extensive knowledge of supplementation, nutrition and physical activity, we help to enhance people’s lives. Whether it’s gaining strength, improving endurance and stamina, controlling appetite, boosting metabolism and immunity or reducing stress, we have the knowledge to recommend the right products to the right people. Contrary to popular belief, most supplements are safe and usable not only for men but for women as well. In the past, most supplements were not marketed towards women because the bodybuilding and fitness industry was saturated with men. As time went on, the amount of women interested in not only working out, but living a healthy lifestyle grew exponentially. Today we see entire brands and supplement lines specifically formulated for women. It’s clear on many levels that there are just as many women as men in the industry, if not more. Taking a look at competitive bodybuilding and fitness shows, most organizations have roughly five categories for women to compete in, while there are only two categories for men. At the local shows in Winnipeg and area, the trending ratio of women to men is almost 2:1! Awesome, right? We think so. Our goal as a sports nutrition and supplement retailer is to share what we know with as many people as we can reach. We love answering every question that comes our way. We pride ourselves on having the best customer service and the most comprehensive product knowledge in the industry. We want to educate consumers on the importance of living a healthy, active balanced lifestyle. We believe everyone’s quality of life can benefit from the right guidance in nutrition, supplementation and physical activity. Our staff of four is stacked with a resident Nutritionist, two Personal Trainers and all four with extensive product knowledge and competitive sports backgrounds. We aren’t pushy sales people, we don’t base our recommendations on a commission; we genuinely care about each and every one of our customers. We’re more interested in developing customer rapport, sharing educational information and sustaining long term relationships. At Muscles by Meyers, we’re here to serve you.
