1.0 THREE 2-WEEKS’ PROJECTS
Three projects about point, line & plane, mass and frame & infill are explored. These projects are closely related to concepts and creativity instead of practical buildings. In the first week, various inspirations are searched, and the initial concepts about the projects are established and assessed. In the second week, projects are keeping developed and models and drawing are conducted.
7
1.1 Point, Line & Plane These precedents are exploration the way point, line and plane working together to generate different space configuration. A serious of points become lines. Repeated using of lines become plane. In this exercise, idea of becoming has been expressed.
Defferent planes interact with each other, which causes impressive level changes and forming creative spaces. The roof plane and the “bridge (continuous planes) between two major sections of this building are even connected with the ground and forming a prefect space for social activities on campus.
Timber sticks(points) are forming lines and lines support planes in a classic manner. In some part, lines look like extending into plane. The strong symmetry buried in this work contains harmony and rhythm.

Final project
Following the curved path of columns, visitors enter my sculptural urban square. Height of elements are increasing which contributes to build up the rhythm and flow in this space. columns show the process of points become lines and they lead to a path forming by folded planes. Planes start on the ground and continuously extending to become roof-like structures. In the end of this composition, a triangular plane is curved out by a smaller triangle. The cut and cut out sections (initially as one plane) are used to form a space.

Final project I use concrete with square shape to form this underground space, because I found these two elements generate sense of mystique. Visitors will be led by lights and finally reach an underground pond. The pond is collecting rainwater using the cliff topography and providing a strip of light. Visitors can see the light casting on them all the way through the water surface and have a glance of outside’s view through the reflection of water surface.
10
1.2 Mass
In mass exercise, focus is to create an underground space highlighting experience of visitors. In a generally dark environment, senses of human becomes sensitive. Therefore, different layers of lights are introduced to increase the complexity of space and lead people through as those precedents do. Dark spaces generate fear, as a result, visitors are sticking with light to feel safe. Also adding water into design, and combined with light can better the experience, because water itself has the connotation of mystery.

1.3 Frame & Infill
Frame is defined as something fixed and static. Infill is viewed as fluid and dynamic structures with the feature of antigravity. They are working together to framing particular views. Visitors are at first impressed by the contrast of frame and infill and then the particular views provided by this composition will provide visitors with quality experiences.

Final project
A grid-like structure forms my frame and the curved cloud-like path acts as infill. I intend to create this huge contrast of straightness of frame and the softness of infill, and the point that the soft structure can be walked on, increases this contrast. The infill framed the lake view. Due to its feature of antigravity, it looks like fog above the lake from a distance.

2.0 HERRING ISLAND - SECRET
Secret is the major theme of this final project. It also requires an exploration of spaces above ground, on the ground and below ground which refers to the techniques that had been employed in these three little projects above. I was consciously worked with the techniques I valued the most from past projects, but eventually I found out I was unconsciously applying spaces with certainly qualities. Those qualities seem hard to describe by words but it naturally associated with spaces above, on and below ground and better these spaces.

Herring Island is a sculptural part in Melbourne, where artworks are located into a landscape and aging with this island. It is closed to Melbourne CBD, therefore, a good place for weekend. On the northwest side of Herring Island, Monash freeway is over Yarra river, which makes this side of island noisy. North side of Herring Island is surrounded by quiet green area and residential zones and has better river view, as a result, I located my design there. The only access to this site is through boat on Yarra river. This also adds excitement to this island’s experience. There are great level changes of topography on Herring Island and abundant cover of vegetation. It is generally comfortable to have a walk there. My design also can take advantages of topography changes (using these natural slope) and vegetation (view framing). Generally speaking it is a great place to enjoy nature and arts together.

2.2 Conceptacle
Those sculptural artworks on Herring Island is my start of this project. They are positioned on site and aging with the site. Viewers can see their damage from rain and winds, and some of them are even hard to recognize it is actually a piece of artificial work. The story of they are a secret for me. I decide to conduct a project also can function as an artwork, age with this island and become a secret. Las Pozas is one of this kind of project in a forest of Mexico. Besides this aging secret, I want to create a journey through my design, in which particular views and generated emotions become secrets. In my conceptacle, I explored the way my design might coop with the slope of my site and form quality above, on and below ground space. Both two conceptacles are expressing my space composition of different functional structures.
19
2.3 Design Development Starting with the way I can manipulate the slope, I kept thinking about not only conducting my design as a pavilion but also a passageway for Herring Island. I gradually settle with the idea of putting a skylight for my underground space, where has a rainwater tank below to add mystery and uncertainty of water in. Also the idea of using square shape to smaller the water pond in the bottom, is discovered to achieve a sense of rituals and mystique. When I began to think about the structure above the hill, I reviewed my project for frame and infill. Therefore, I explored a series of organic shapes. And eventually this organic form continued to my final destination of view framing zone.

2.4 Final Model A journey which gradually builds up secret through different experiences in spaces. The secret is defined as the river view which is finally revealed in the destination of this journey (the river view platform).

3.0 REFLECTION
After finishing this final project, I realized that I have a better understanding and manipulation of those theories of point, line & plane, mass and frame & infill than the time I did my two-week’s projects. I am able to pick up the strengths and weakness in my short time projects critically and understand the way space influences visitors. I have a strong feeling that I gradually understand those three tectonics throughout this semester’s study. During the tectonics’ exercise, I was trying hard to apply those taught methods in my design. However, in the final project, they are naturally mixed together. In order to achieve the intended space quality, I unconsciously used tectonics to help. Instead of the forms, I think I understand their effects to architectural compositions now.
