TELEVISION, RADIO, FILM

It is amazing to think that God would use a piece of celluloid film to touch a heart to change a life. The words of thousands of people in the form of letters, telephone calls and personal contacts are testimony to the fact that God can and does!

54
Dr Mark B Lloyd, Director

jThe Division of Television, Radio and Film at LBCattempts to give the student a complete background in these areas within theframework of Christian philosophy, based upon a Biblio-centric point ofview. Its goals areto train dedicated Christian communicators who will influence society in theclassroom, the television station, the film unit, or the local church

TRF students atLBCare set apart from other college anduniversity students in this field by their practical useof quality art, television, radio andfilm equipment, andmore significantly, asthey are actively involved inweekly television and radio broadcasts

Once there was a man, according to an old tale, who was so filled with despondency that he decided to commit suicide. He started on hislong walk across the city' toward the bridge which was to be hisjumping-off place. But he promised himself that ifhe met one smiling, happy, friendly-looking person on the way,he would turn back from hisbittererrand.

80

Oddly, the story ends without answering the question whether or not the mission ended with suicide. The tale, however, poses a question, one of those haunting personal questions which pop into the mind now and then: Ifthat man had met you would he have turned back and taken up his life with ameasure ofcourage? Well, would he?

There is something about being under the ope n sky—not confined within four walls and a ceiling—something about speaking to a crowd that has gathered to see and to listen. They are curious; here, then, is an opportunity to tell the m of Jesus. "Ou t in the highways and byways of life"—isn't that wher e Jesus spoke to the lost? Isn't that wher e the blind were mad e to see? Following Christ's example, David Wilson, of the Ope n Air Campaigners, held several neighborhood and street meetings in Lynchburg; for LB C it is the beginning of a ne w ministry.

THOMA S ROAD BIBLE INSTITUTE

Dear Friend,

Some years ago,the 16th President of the United States picked up his Bible andsaid:"I believethis Book is the greatest giftever given to mankind byGod." Thus did Abraham Lincoln speak about God's Word Andsoit is But it is even more than thattoday Inthispolluted, lawless, dangerous and dreadful age, the Biblealonecan SPAN theages, STEM thetide, SECURE thefutureand SOOTHE thesoul!

For sometime, however, I have been especially concerned about the rising ignorance of even basic Bibleknowledge intheworld today The Bibleis all but ignored inour universitiesand lower institutions of learning In spite of our many fine BibleSchools, the present "Now generation" perhaps knows less about the sacred Scriptures than did any other generation since the Reformation. It is atragic but true factthat many ofour young people areturning away from the Bibleoftheirfathersand mothers, notas much because ofimmoral hearts, but because ofignorant hearts! They have based their shallow conclusionsabout Christianity onwhat they have heard from liberaltheologians and unfriendlyprofessors Their unconscious cry is the cry ofthe New Testament eunuch, who being asked by the evangelistPhilip if he understood theScripture, answered:"How can I, exceptsomeone show me?"

Simply stated, theThomas Road Bible Institutecame into being toaid men and women inobtaininga thorough knowledge ofGod's Word from a historicaland theological viewpoint. It is our conviction that the fullmeaning ofthe sublime scripture cannot be shown toorsown inadesperate world today until it is first known by adedicated believer!

Lynchburg Baptist Theological Seminary

Dear Friend,

I take great joy in telling you about Lynchburg Baptist Theological Seminary, one of the many ministries ofthe Thomas Road Baptist Church Oneof the great needs in America isagraduate school for young men who have graduated from college, who can be further prepared toserveJesusChrist ina local church. Lynchburg Baptist Theological Seminary was founded for that purpose. Thebasic aim of theSeminary is towin soulstoJesusChristwhich complements every other ministryofthe church.

A theological seminary isdifferent from acollege orinstitute Students whocome to the Seminary have been grounded in their discipline and broadened intheirworld outlook. They should have more maturity. Hence, the Seminary hasa more rigorous course and itsscholarship will be atthe highest graduate level possible.Dr.Robert L.Hughes,Seminary Dean, has an outstanding reputation forscholarshipand classroom performance Heis God's man tolead this seminary

Lynchburg Baptist Theological Seminary isunashamed in its commitment to thefundamentals of faith W e believe the Bible is the inspired Word ofGod and hold to its inerrancy It is the finalauthority for our faith andpractice.Students whograduate from our seminary are expected to master the Word of God, both in English and inthe original languages. TheSeminary's motto "Scriptural Scholarship Aflame for Christ andfor Souls" reflects the ultimate purpose for the school Ourstudents should be more than scholars. They should be soul-winners with hearts aflame. There are some seminariesin America which aredoctrinally sound—and wewant to be doctrinally pure—but they have no evangelisticzeal. At the same time, there are other educational institutionswith great evangelistic fervor butno commitment toacademic excellence. W e are combining doctrinally sound teaching and evangelistic zeal. Thiswillboth educate the mind and motivate theheart.

The Seminary iscommitted tothe local church. W e want ourgraduates tobe equipped topastor super-aggressive churches inthis modern world While students are at Lynchburg Baptist Theological Seminary, they become involved inall ofthe ministries ofthe Thomas Road Baptist Church actually learning evangelism bywinning souls, actually learning homiletics by preaching, andactually learning to minister for Jesus Christ byserving. The students are members ofour church andare expected to fulfull thesame obligations asall other members Ibelieve that faithfulness toa small responsibility qualifies a student for a greater sphere ofservice. Being faithful church members will prepare these young men tobe effectivepastors

Faithfully yours,
