The Last Gotham Signature Show for the LIC Arts Open features local artists who draw inspiration from the figure as a starting point. That is where the similarities end. Overt or implied. LATERAL ITINERARIES in CLAY

This exhibition offers snapshots from the creative itineraries of 12 artists who work at BrickHouse Ceramic Art Center. A concentrated exploration of how clay can be shaped to reflect individual visions. All the work began with the same basic gesture – digging into a bag of clay. Then their itineraries diverged immediately. They ran out along paths of individual inspirations from function to installation, to figuration, to abstraction. These 12 artists offer glimpses into 100+ individual creative itineraries, from beginners to professionals, that all began with a bag of clay. brickhouseny.com

BERNARD KLEVICKAS

MFTA Spring Artist in Residence Reception May 16 // 6-8pm Materials for the Arts welcomes our new artist-in-residence BERNARD KLEVICKAS. Klevickas’ work involves taking apart discarded objects made from plastic, metal, styrofoam and more. He then reassembles those materials into large patchwork sculptures composed of dynamic “quilts” of different materials and colors that remind us to rethink the things we put into the waste stream every day. Materials for the Arts, a unit of the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, collects thousands of tons of materials from the industries of New York and donates them, for free, to non-profit arts organizations, schools, and community centers. TIME AFTER TIME: IMAGES IN HISTORICAL DISPLACEMENT

CAROL CRAWFORD, Mixed media May 16-18 // 11-6pm Reception – May 16 // 5-7pm An interactive installation and exhibition of an ongoing creative project, to be continued in different venues throughout 2014, and included as part of my solo exhibition at Atlantic Gallery, Manhattan, in October 2014. A related series of figurative mixed media constructions is aligned with a continuously- folded ribbon of paper on which viewers are invited to help create a story in their own written words, inspired by their interpretation of what they see. As this collective narrative grows progressively, is read and re-written, it becomes a shared experience of creative imagination. carol-crawford.com RESOBOX 41-26 27th St 718.784.3680 resobox.com
