DONNA LEVINSTONE CITY AS LANDSCAPE
Since I moved my studio to Long Island City, I have become more aware of how buildings may be construed the same way as my mountainscapes and tree lined horizons. Mountains fade into the distant mist in a landscape; buildings fade into the distant mist in a cityscape. LIC offers spectacular skies, as it is not yet overdeveloped. For this exhibit, I have tried to capture the beauty of these skies in both black and white and color pastel. My work is inspired by things that show the passage of time and their histories with external stimulus such as layers in canyons accumulated and exposed over many years, weathered abandoned buildings, repasted and faded advertisement posters on city walls, a squashed can in a road, layers of paint peeling off of a wall, and so on. These visual encounters influence my aesthetic sense and concepts in my work. Klevickas’ work involves taking apart discarded objects made from plastic, metal, styrofoam and more. He then reassembles those materials into large patchwork sculptures composed of dynamic “quilts” of different materials and colors that remind us to rethink the things we put into the waste stream every day. CONTINENTAL RECORDING STUDIO PRESENTS: FROM THE GARDEN
May 18 // 12pm-1pm As Tushevs Aerials, we will do an aerial tour of LIC by means of a video remote-control airplane. In this live demonstration/ performance, we will fly one of our home-built, lightweight foam remote-control airplanes. The audience will be able to follow the flight via virtual reality goggles and a TV screen, both of which will stream the flight live in first person view. We can also allow some of the audience to experience flying the airplane by means of an extra remote control radio. See LIC like never before - from the perspective of a bird! QNMF: Composers Concordance
May 18 // 2pm Composers Concordance is a presenting organization for contemporary music with a 31-year-history of producing concerts in New York City. They strive to present music in innovative ways, with an emphasis on thematic programming. For their Queens New Music Festival performance, Comp Cord Ensemble will be joined by Bill Schimmel – accordion, Demetrius Spaneas – soprano sax, Damien Bassman – drums, and Jacob Miller – poet/narrator. The program will feature music of each composer/performer. Each of the compositions was written for this particular ensemble, and highlights the performers’ abilities, while giving the composers a unique opportunity to write for an unusual, mixedinstrumental combination. The styles of the compositions range the spectrum of musical sound, and the only words that could describe them all would be: eclectic, all-encompassing, and genre-blurring. (see Fri. Comprised of soprano, flute, clarinet, violin, percussion, and electronics TAK’s collective energy brings an almost telepathic connection and immense dedication to new works and emerging composers. May 18 // 7pm Trio Kavak is Amelia Lukas (flute), Victor Lowrie (viola) and Kathryn Andrews (harp). An instrumental ensemble established by Debussy’s masterpiece sonata, Kavak explores the contemporary repertoire and new sound possibilities for this highly evocative combination. Trio Kavak will perform 4 world premieres by the composers of Random Access Music composers’ collective.
