As we approach the end of the rst year of this monthly column with The European Business Review I wanted to take a step back and look at this concept we decided to call “executive health”. I’ve worked in this eld the past 10 years, attempting to overcome the inherent oxymoron of the professional norm that is having less health as an accompaniment to a more executive life. All of these themes address health and wellbeing in the professional domain, an area of increasing interest the past few years yet there still seems to be a signi cant gap between interest and companies who implement these issues in a su ciently mature way so as to capture the available value. Wellbeing has a formal presence in most large companies today, yet it exists at a relatively junior level of the organisation and is focussed on the reduction of risks, including absenteeism and sickness. Is this type of work required? Absolutely. Yet there is another way of perceiving the opportunities of wellbeing, in the ways that it can improve executive performance – through the increased energy, creativity, resilience and leadership that it undoubtedly generates. If a more progressive de nition of health exists beyond merely “the absence of sickness” why does health and wellbeing management in the enterprise still su er from a similarly negative approach? Demonstrating a strong business case for health and wellbeing, and linking it to performance, was the subject of my 2015 book Sustaining Executive Performance. Though the presence of such themes at the senior level of an organisation remains infrequent today there are encouraging signs. The coaching process at the most senior executive level is starting to integrate more of these issues, and there seems to be a general movement towards recognising the need for creating more human workplaces. In the coming age of the fourth industrial revolution with all its technology advancement and digital transformation, many leading enterprises recognise that their humanity will matter more than ever. I’m spending my summer in the Scottish Highlands writing a follow-up to Sustaining Executive Performance. This will be published in the Autumn and I’m excited to share more details in the September edition of this column. I’m based at the Institute for Design Innovation of the Glasgow School of Art, one of the top 10 art schools in the world. Readers of this column will know that we frequently champion the role of design. Above all things, design is human. It looks to create a world that satis es the needs we have as human beings. And these needs, within the context of Executive Health regard a workplace and corresponding culture that support health, wellbeing and sustainable performance. One of the most practical uses of design is “Design for X” which comes from the engineering or product design eld. X denotes the area of focus to be optimised within the development of the product, such as environment, usability and manufacturability. framework help move health and wellbeing to a more senior level in an organisation? I think so. Having the right tools and methods, something that the design eld is so good at doing, will allow a strategic approach to a complex issue. Given the di erent ways and contexts in which we can view wellbeing, the Design for Wellbeing term already exists and is developed in di erent research centres around the world, including here at the Glasgow School of Art. The Scottish Highlands base provides a set of unique challenges around geographical distribution that may help inspire di erent innovations that can be applied within traditional urban centres. For example, in the healthcare setting, if a patient requires over 2 hours travel time to get to a hospital how may the experience be re-designed? And is there any value from that re-imagination that can be applied to traditional settings? Wellbeing is driven by the Digital Health Initiative, which works with the National Health Service in Scotland and the Scottish Government in the design of public services which improve health and wellbeing through a deep understanding of the patient experience. Experience labs bring together clinicians, patients and technology providers to co-create services that better cope with an ageing population. Designing preferable futures is the vision for much of the research and teaching here and wellbeing is at the heart of that. Greater societal wellbeing is being targeted around the world and a more senior consideration of wellbeing in business will help. I’m pulling together many of the themes touched on in the rst year of this column in the development of a Design for Wellbeing framework for business. A rst “prototype� of this is the ABC of wellbeing at work, which includes: A: Attitude represents the senior leadership skills that can be borrowed from design thinking to create a more human workplace. These include integrating more observation, iteration and empathy as part of daily leadership practice. B: Behaviour concerns the discrete behaviours that make up the daily work of the workforce at large and our understanding of how these habits may be changed. Connecting these behaviours to the top-level vision of the company seems to be of increasing interest in companies around the world. C: Chronobiology looks at the natural biological rhythms that make up our daily lives. In an age where work is potentially, and increasingly, 24-7, recognising that we are not machines and subject to our human biology is critical. a hot topic of late, and one that is of paramount importance for health and wellbeing. They said he was an idiot. They said his sketches were infantile and that it looked like a child had done them. They were right! He did paint like a child as an adult, but more interestingly he had painted like a master when he was a mere child. Pablo Picasso was a genius. He was born in Malaga in the south of Spain in 1881 and his family moved to Barcelona when he was ve, where he stayed for the next 20 years, before he left for France. He said of Barcelona “There is where it all began… where I understood how far I could go.” This chapter is about learning to survive, and thrive, in a sea of change. By better understanding the great waves of change, we can learn to be masters of disruption, rather than victims. This is true on an individual and organizational level, and we will show how the Chief Wellbeing O cer can ask the right questions to help both the person and company navigate safely and successfully. The very essence of wellbeing is nding, and acting according to, your authentic self. It is easy to lose sight of our authenticity due to a variety of factors, life experiences, bad habits, poor choices, and the environment in which we spend most of our time. We may even achieve a great deal of success acting inauthentically, though if that success does last, it is unlikely to be ful lling. Exposing ourselves to outside points of view and in uences is healthy, as is learning from others and getting new ideas, but we must always stay true to who we are. As Oscar Wilde said, “Be yourself, everybody else is already taken.” This quest for authenticity builds on our discussion in chapter three on de ning purpose, values, and vision, and we will enrich that quest through di erent means in this chapter, including a call to adopt a more childlike mindset. Disruption is the natural order of life – where change, death, and rebirth are everpresent. By better understanding the main rhythms and their transitions, we may take advantage on both a personal and business level. Our belief, akin to Clayton Christensen’s Innovator’s Dilemma for companies is that all people, no matter how successful, must at some point leave behind the old way of doing things and make the switch to a new path. Reinvention is becoming a child again, curious to learn and adopt a beginner’s mindset that is characterized by curiosity, exploration, and discovery. We all know how to make friends without starting with assumptions and judgments. We did that in the school playground. of humiliation. Young children do that all the time. Yet over time our innate, authentic, and unique characteristics are eroded and moulded into a standardisation of what society or our family or company wants us to look like. During this process we lose the invaluable and naive ability to create, innovate, and be our authentic selves. Picasso said: “Every child is an artist… and then they grow up.” The childlike characteristics so often stolen from us as we grow, mature, and learn to socialize are exactly what so many companies are now asking for in their people: the ability to think out of the box, to think for themselves and innovate. Children are predisposed to authenticity and optimism. These are probably the two most important leadership characteristics that companies are crying out for, yet we humiliate our employees for displaying them. It was said recently that “companies are abattoirs of the human soul”. Companies step into our lives, just after we have been through years of training and conditioning by schools, and they keep on transforming us into the best version for them, again eroding our personal characteristics. At the same time they increasingly ask for creativity and passion. Yet wellbeing and the creativity, passion, and performance that comes from it, thrives when we reconnect with our authentic selves. This is what Chief Wellbeing O cer is here for, and there are signs that organizations are beginning to change. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella talked in 2017 of his admiration for the book MindSet by Stanford professor Carol Dweck: “I was reading it not in the context of business or work culture, but in the context of my children’s education. The author describes the simple metaphor of kids at school. One of them is a ‘know-it-all’ and other is a ‘learn-it-all’, and the learn-it-all always will do better than the other one, even if the know-it-all kid starts with much more innate capability. Going back to business: if that applies to boys and girls at school, I think it also applies to CEOs, like me, and entire organizations, like Microsoft. We want to be not a know-it-all but learn-it-all organization.” Such a learn-it-all approach is often held up as good practice in parenting, where the focus should not be on giving the answer to questions that children may have, but taking an approach of “let’s nd out together”, in order to awaken interest in the process of discovery. The process and thirst for the answer is actually more important than the answer itself. Such a skill will be even more important for the complex problems of the future where there may not be a single answer. exist in the organization, not simply because that’s “the way it has always been done”. Learning to live has two distinct meanings. First, in a longer life and career we must better navigate the waves of change and so we better learn how life unfolds. Second, on the role of learning in order to live. Learning is a never-ending process. Picasso also said, “I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” It seems he was a learn-it-all, too. What is work anyway?
We often use this exercise in the context of the MOVE element of the Sustaining Executive Performance (SEP) programme, highlighting that quality work need not be con ned to the sedentary o ce time that characterizes most workplaces, and which compromises both health and performance. AOL chief executive Tim Armstrong considered the key metric for his executives as ‘10% thinking time’. They had to formally commit to 10% of their weekly time as being dedicated to thinking. How much time do you spend thinking through tough problems? How much time are you spending on other, perhaps less value-added, activities? A common takeaway from the above exercise is that people discover their best thinking occurs in places other than the o ce. We conclude that leaving the o ce to take a shower when confronted with a tough problem may be taking things a little far, but stress the importance of moving and giving ourselves permission that work, especially quality work, need not be sedentary o ce time.

The level of balance or integration becomes clear, and though many may have lived such a reality for years, it is interesting to note how impactful it can be for them – with a common takeaway being that they have no time for themselves – when it is on the paper in front of them. Having it on paper tends to make it more real.

“I don’t have time!” is a frequent refrain in a modern-day professional life. Yet a re ection such as this will help you identify if you are spending the time you do have wisely. Perhaps change will include cutting away the unimportant tasks, delegating others, or simply nding a new time to do things so as to be more e cient. We have yet to nd a case in our coaching work where a close look at the 168 hours available in a week does not o er the space to live a productive professional life that optimizes wellbeing. American author Laura Vanderkam tested her own limits as a working mother of four children in the New York Times article ‘The Busy Person’s Lies’. She logged over 17,000 half-hour blocks in a full year to analyse exactly how she was spending her time, nding that she was indeed busy, but that there was plenty of space also. She concluded there is no contradiction between a full life that also has space.
