Hear From the Expert: AN INTERVIEW WITH RADAN DRAGAŠEVIĆ, ONE OF MONTENEGRO’S TOP DIVING INSTRUCTORS!
We spoke to Radan Dragašević, the owner and resident PADI Staff instructor at Pro Dive Hydrotech Dive Centre, who, with 30 years of diving experience, is the perfect person to give us the low down on diving in Montenegro!
We wanted to know what it was that first appealed to him about scuba diving and what it was that has kept him around for so long! He told us: “While SCUBA diving, you are in direct contact with nature, without any noise or any kind of everyday distractions. In short, it was the peace that I found while diving that kept me coming back for more!”
Montenegro is fast becoming known as one of the world’s best spots for scuba diving, attracting enthusiastic amateurs & professionals from all over the world! We asked Radan to give us insights on why this was - he told us that Montenegro has been a popular destination for both beginners and experienced divers for a while, and that the area’s popularity will only continue to grow due to the conditions that exist here! He said “It has all the characteristics necessary for good diving - good water visibility, pleasant sea temperature and very interesting underwater topography with lot of vertical & horizontal tunnels and shore Caves “. It’s these factors that have lead to such a good reputation among the diving community, bringing huge numbers of enthusiastic divers to the coast each year! An enthusiasm took over Radan when he described SCUBA diving as, ”An exceptional adventure in every sense!” Having been involved in diving for the last 30 years, he said “I can tell you now that I love my life!” With such an experienced professional at hand we couldn’t resist asking Radan for some of his tips for those just starting out!
“Frist piece of advice - be Safe - especially if you are diving for the first time!” He suggested starting out with a reputable school and experienced instructor to ensure that you have the best possible start! He recommended PADI as the best place to begin - they have the best support for both amateur divers and professionals!
He left us with one last piece of wisdom, “My final piece of advice, and this is not only for diving, is, don’t sweep your fears under the carpet because they will wait for you! You have to face your fears and beat them!”
We couldn’t agree more! So, if you’re ready to face your fears and have an unforgettable experience at the same time, why not look into the options available and get ready for the adventure of a lifetime!
RADAN’S TOP DIVING DESTINATIONS!
TWIN CAVES
This beginner friendly dive offers you the unique opportunity to experience both a salt and fresh water dive all at once, due to the presence of fresh water springs in both caves! In this 40-minute dive, you will dive to a maximum depth of 14 metres, and with visibility ranging from 10-30 metres, you’ll get an incredible view of the magical underwater world that exists below the surface! As you explore the first cavern, you will have the opportunity to surface into a huge air pocket within the cave itself! The fact you are able to surface any time you want, makes this one of the safest and most beginner friendly dives in Montenegro! To dive the twin caves, you must at least have your OWD certification.
POSEIDON CAVE
The second site on the list is another of Montenegro’s incredible cave diving spots! The Poseidon cave will take you through a series of caverns and complex of inter-connected tunnels, filled with fascinating underwater flora and fauna! Like the Twin Caves, the duration of this dive is roughly 40 minutes. However, when diving the Poseidon Cave system you will reach a maximum depth of 40 metres! To dive the Poseidon Cave, you must at least have your OWD certification.
SHIPWRECKED PATROL BOAT
The final dive, and one of the most fascinating dives in Europe, is the diving trip that takes you to the sandy sea floor, where you will encounter a 40-metre, 1952 Yugoslavian patrol boat, purposefully sunk in the 1980’s as part of the training for the Navy. While it is possible to enter the wreck, it is only available to those who hold a Wreck Speciality Certification.
