Editorial I think it was Einstein who said that simplifying something is a very difficult thing to do. (If not, he should have said it!) Planning a wedding is not rocket science; however, planning a destination wedding with a language barrier is a challenge! Italy is one of my most favourite places in the world for magical destination weddings; fairy-tale towns of cobbled streets lined with storybook buildings, amazing food (and wine!), fabulous people, breathtaking scenery and wonderful weather. I am fortunate that as a destination wedding planner I get to visit it often! Over the last couple of years I have spent oodles of time making the planning process as simple as possible for weddings to Italy. I hope this magazine helps to make the planning process easier for you. Italy is very much worth the effort; you won’t be disappointed! Enjoy! Rosie The Wedding Planner

The Legal ‘Bits’ Required for Civil Ceremonies in Italy Civil ceremonies are performed by mayors or other authorised officials of the Italian state. There is no residency requirement in Italy; however, in many locations you are required to sign a Declaration of Intention to Marry two to five days prior to your marriage ceremony. These proceedings are in Italian, so unless you are fluent in Italian, an approved interpreter will be required.

Traditionally, civil weddings in Italy had to be performed inside a town hall to be considered legally binding. These town halls are extraordinarily beautiful historic buildings. (See the following two pages of photos of just a sample of the town halls in one region alone!)

Can I Get Married Outdoors? There are a limited amount of outdoor locations that are permitted to hold legally binding wedding ceremonies. However, the good news is that the number of outdoor civil wedding locations in Italy is growing. It is now possible to have legally binding outdoor ceremonies in some private castles and villas with stunning gardens and views overlooking the sea along the Amalfi Coast or the

lake district in Northern Italy. Some local authorities have started to purchase properties that have gorgeous areas for outdoor wedding ceremonies. If you have your heart set on having your wedding ceremony outdoors in a location that is not permitted, you could say your legal vows at the town hall and then have a symbolic ceremony outdoors in a stunning location near or at your reception venue. Alternatively you could look after the legals before you leave your home country and then have a full symbolic ceremony outdoors in Italy. Rosie The Wedding Planner’s team is very creative and we will ensure you have the wedding of your dreams, so do contact us!

In order for your marriage to be celebrated in Italy the following documents will be required a minimum of one month prior to your arrival: • Original or certified copies of your long form birth certificates. • Nulla Osta (the civil letter of freedom to marry) which can be obtained, depending on your nationality, from your consulate or Department of Foreign Affairs (Irish passport holders). • Photocopy of bride and groom’s passports. • Photocopy of passports of your two witnesses ,with details of their marital status, occupation and place of residence. If either the bride or groom has been previously married the following documents will also be required: • Certified copy of previous marriage certificate(s). • Original divorce (decree absolute) or death certificate(s) of previous spouse(s). • If either party had a name change, the original deed poll will be required. • Should the names on any documents differ, a solicitor’s letter will be required. Please note: This is a guide. Procedures above may change or vary depending on nationality. Documents and residency requirements are subject to change. Please check with your Italian Embassy for a full list of required documents.

The Legal ‘Bits’ Required for Catholic Weddings in Italy A Catholic Wedding Ceremony can only be celebrated in a Catholic church in Italy (as with most other countries). It can be celebrated between members of different faiths provided one partner is Catholic. A Letter of Dispensation is required from your local parish priest and bishop to marry a non-Catholic and also to marry in another parish/country. For a Catholic wedding in Italy you need the same paperwork as listed for Civil Ceremonies PLUS the following documents will be required a minimum of one month prior to your arrival: • • • • •

Baptism Certificate Confirmation Certificate Certificate of Pre-Marriage Course Religious Nulla Osta from your bishop Letter of Dispensation from your parish priest

Religious documents are only valid for six months and must be in the parish in Italy at least 30 days before the wedding day. Humanist, Blessings & Vow Renewals If you wish to have a blessing in Italy and the civil marriage in your own country this can be arranged. There is no required paperwork for this as it is not a legally binding ceremony.

Weddings In Tuscany & Umbria

Tuscany and Umbria's romantic countryside offer the biggest and most diverse range of wedding locations and venues in Italy. Rolling hills bursting with sunflowers, olive groves, vineyards. Pretty towns and hilltop hamlets that offer an abundance of pretty churches, historic wedding halls and beautiful private villas to suit intimate wedding parties of 2 to 400. Most villas have their own pool, a choice of indoor or outdoor dining areas and gorgeous locations for an outdoor wedding c e r e m o n y. S u c h a s t h e V i l l a Podernovo: it has beautiful outdoor spaces for ceremonies and dining or you could have your ceremony at the

ruin of San Galgano Abbey and Montesiepi Chapel with the 'Sword in the rock. While Tuscany is home to some of Italy’s best-loved towns including Florence, Siena and Pisa, Umbria is the green heart of Italy and has some of the most amazing medieval towns such as Assisi and Orvieto. It is one of the few regions in Italy that is not touched by the sea and yet it boasts one of Italy’s largest lakes: Lake Trasimeno. Best time of year for a wedding in Umbria and Tuscany: April through October.

Umbria is a pleasure to visit as castles seem to appear out of nowhere perched on a hill town and every town has a magnificent main square with a church or cathedral. As Umbria is one of Italy’s more secret gems its prices for weddings can be very favourable when compared with other regions. Italy prides itself on its amazing architecture and some of the ancient buildings have been tastefully restored into beautiful hotels and wedding venues. Such as the Park Hotel ai Cappuccini which is a skilfully restored 17th century monastery. Set in a secluded location, yet only a stone’s throw from the historic centre of the beautiful medieval town Gubbio.

Another highly recommended, perfectly restored venue in the same area is Villa Benveduti, which was a luxury country residence built in the second half of the 18th century. This magnificent house, decorated with precious frescos, was once the summer residence of the aristocratic Benveduti family and is now available for weddings! Airports for Tuscany and Umbria: Pisa, Florence and Rome (for south Umbria). Rosie The Wedding Planner’s team know 100s of gorgeous villas and venues throughout Tuscany and Umbria for weddings of all sizes. Here’s a sample of some of them!

Understanding Your Wedding Menu Italians love food and one of the reasons people love Italy is because of their food! A sumptuous banquet of lots of dishes is the centre of all Italian family gatherings. Each region has its specialities and every mama in Italy seems to have a signature dish that you have to try when visiting their home. In some regions of Italy a wedding meal can be 13 courses or more! So whether it’s seafood in the South, pizza in Naples, peasant food in Puglia (the most gorgeous food I have ever tasted), limoncello in Amalfi, or ice cream in Florence, should you choose to have your wedding in Italy there is one thing you will not have to worry about and that is the quality and quantity of food in your wedding banquet. So here is what to expect for your wedding banquet: Aperitivo (Cocktail hour or bubbly and canapés) A typical wedding reception starts with the aperitivo, which is cocktail hour. This usually consists of drinks served in the gardens, with canapés left on tables or available from waiters who walk among the guests with trays. The canapés are bite-sized nibbles such as cherry tomatoes, olives, mini quiches, salami, prawns, cheeses, etc. Cocktail hour is usually a standing affair, so guests can mingle while the final formal photos are taken. And strangely enough the cocktail hour goes on for about an hour!

Antipasti (Starter) When your guests are called for dinner and seated they will be served a variety of two or three appetisers on the same plate. This could be bruschetta, stuffed mushroom, smoked meat or salmon, or a local delicacy. This is followed by the first course: Primo Piatto (First course) Usually this is a dish based on pasta, risotto or ravioli and is followed by the main course or ‘second plate’.

Secondo Piatto (Main course)

Banquets end with an espresso coffee served with traditional Confettata all’Italiana (Sugar Almonds).

Usually a fish or meat dish and this is where you could include a local speciality. Beef, pork, lamb, and guinea fowl are popular. Chicken and rabbit are not usually served for wedding meals. This course is served with a side dish (contorno) of vegetables, roast potatoes or a salad.

A Note and A Tip!

Sorbetto (Sorbet) A sorbet is served to cleanse the palate and prepare your guests for the next mouth-watering course! Sorbets can be alcoholic or non-alcoholic. I’d recommend a Prosecco or lemon sorbet! Dolce (Dessert) Italy has fabulous desserts, with ice cream being a speciality of course! The Wedding Cake Western-style tiered cakes a re a v a i l a b l e i n I t a l y ; however, why not have an Italian wedding cake. They are not only great looking, but delicious too! They could be puff pastry or delicate sponge cake layers filled with cream and other fillings that reflect the region. For instance, around the Amalfi Coast wedding cakes are flavoured with lemons and limoncello.

A Note: The sample menus Rosie The Wedding Planner bases wedding quotes on start from a four-course menu and can be completely customised for you. A Tip: If DIY-ing your wedding banquet at a villa use a professional wedding planning catering company such as Real Party who have years of experience and know how to add the umph factor to a wedding! É viva gli sposi!
